First of all you will need .NET installed if you do not have it already. I would recommend .NET 3.5. You can download it from Microsoft here.
The most important part about flashing a rom is knowing what SPL version your phone has and what rom you want to use before you begin flashing. If you are at a point where you have already begun flashing and are now getting a green, distorted screen, having huge issues with the phone not responding and airplane mode being stuck on, that is because you have done the process wrong. Don't fret, you can simply start over with this guide. You can still place your phone into the bootloader so you are ok.
The first thing to do is check what your SPL version currently is. To do this you need to enter bootloader by:
Turn it off.
Hold the volume down button while you press the power on button.
You should see a tri-color screen with some text (This is bootloader).
Plug in your phone to your computer via USB. At the very bottom of the screen it should show USB.
Once you know what your SPL version currently is you need to decide whether you want to use USPL or HSPL to flash roms.
The difference between USPL and HSPL:
HSPL is an user-modified SPL that you have to flash to your phone. It overwrites the existing SPL on your device with a "hacked" one so to say. It allows you to bypass the HTC certificate check and flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone. You only have to flash it once and then you can flash roms anytime.
USPL is a temporary solution. It takes advantage of an exploit in the existing SPL and then loads a modified one to memory, effectively allowing the same thing as HSPL. However, since this is only memory-resident you have to do it each time you want to flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone, because this exploited state is lost upon reboot. With USPL you must still have the right version of the HTC SPL that is compatible with the rom you want to use.
Now that you have decided which route you want to go as far as SPL's go, temporarily disable or uninstall your virus scanning software as 90% of them will conflict with flashing.
If you wish to use HSPL and it shows your current SPL as:
Anything but 1.56.OliNex - go to step (HSPL1) on post 2
1.56.OliNex - go to step (HSPL4) on post 2
If you wish to use USPL and it shows your current SPL as:
Anything but 1.54.0000 - go to step (USPL1) on post 3
1.54.0000 - go to step (USPL5) on post 3
If you are getting errors during the RUU process, read this guide for descriptions of the error codes and associated solutions/suggestions!
If you need to update your USB drivers, read this guide for step-by-step instructions!
MOD EDIT (01/10/09)
Video guide to help newbies out with loading ROMs
HSPL Method
Use this method only if you selected the HSPL route from the first post!
HSPL1 - Downloads
(HSPL1a) HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.zip
(HSPL1b) A 1.56+ based rom - Your end result rom, i.e. rom you want on device which is based on 1.56+
(HSPL1c) BlackstoneRUUWrapper.zip
(HSPL1d) SSPL-Manual-TouchHD.zip
(HSPL1e) Extract each item to its own folder
HSPL2 - Flash new SPL (1.56.OliNex)
(HSPL2a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
(HSPL2b) Run HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe from the download in step (HSPL1a) and follow it as normal.
(HSPL2c) If successful, go to step HSPL3. If the flashing process sits at 0% and you get Error [260] connection after some time, go to step (Troubleshooting).
HSPL3 - Check SPL version
(HSPL3a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
(HSPL3b) When the bootloader appears it should show SPL v 1.56.OliNex. If it does go to step (HSPL4). If it does not something happened so repeat step (HSPL2).
HSPL4 - Flash new 1.56+ rom
(HSPL4a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
(HSPL4b) If the rom you downloaded from step (HSPL1b) does not include BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe then use the download from step (HSPL1c). Make sure the .nbh file from step (HSPL1b) and BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe are in the same folder.
(HSPL4c) Run BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe and follow it as normal.
(HSPL4d) Hard reset afterwards. Once or twice- up to you. Twice has been recommended. Turn off your phone. I personally do it right after flashing completes and I see the "Smart Mobility" screen. I just yank the battery out instead of waiting for it to boot up all the way and go through customization process just to hard reset Hold the volume down button and volume up button while you press the power on button. You should see a message saying "This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to the manufacturer default settings. Press VolUp to restore manufacturer defaults, or press other keys to cancel." Do exactly what it says...
You are done!
Troubleshooting - manual SSPL
Boot up your phone.
Copy SSPL-Manual-TouchHD.exe to your phone. In a file browser on your phone browse to where you copied SSPL-Manual-TouchHD.exe and run it.
Your phone will reboot into its bootloader and should show SPL v 1.07.OliNex.
When it shows USB at the bottom then run HSPLWrapper_blackstone_156OilNex.exe from your computer again.
Go to step HSPL3 if successful.
USPL Method
Use this method only if you selected the USPL route from the first post!
USPL1 - Downloads
(USPL1a) RUU_Signed_Blackstone_stockSPL154.zip
(USPL1b) HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.zip
(USPL1c) USPL GUI v 2.5.zip
(USPL1d) A 1.56+ based rom - Your end result rom, i.e. rom you want on device which is based on 1.56+
(USPL1e) BlackstoneRUUWrapper.zip
(USPL1f) Extract each item to its own folder
USPL2 - Updating HTC USB Sync driver
(USPL2a) Follow my guide here on updating the HTC USB Sync driver.
USPL3 - Flash new SPL (1.54.0000)
(USPL3a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
(USPL3b) Run USPL.exe from the download in step (USPL1c). Remember to disable your antivirus for this. Some provide a false positive that it is a virus/trojan. When the application appears click on Run USPL.
(USPL3c) Your phone should reboot and return to its bootloader but saying SPL v 1.15.USPL and USB at the bottom. If it does not show USB after some time, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable from your phone.
(USPL3d) Run HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe from the download in step (USPL1b). Do not click any buttons on the screen when the application appears.
(USPL3e) Copy RUU_Signed.nbh that you extracted from the download in step (USPL1a) and overwrite the one in the directory where you ran HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe from. If you get an error message saying that the file is already in use that is because you clicked one or more buttons in the HardSPL application window once it appeared. If that happens to you, exit from it, start it again, and DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING YET.
(USPL3f) Now you can continue in the HardSPL application and follow it as normal. Basically what you are doing is flashing the stock 1.54.0000 SPL to your phone by overwriting the HardSPL's .NBH file with the stock one.
USPL 4 - Check SPL version
(USPL4a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
(USPL4b) When the bootloader appears it should show SPL v 1.54.0000. If it does go to step (USPL5). If it does not something happened so repeat step (USPL3).
USPL 5 - Flash new 1.56+ rom
(USPL5a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
(USPL5b) Run USPL.exe from the download in step (USPL1c). Remember to disable your antivirus for this. Some provide a false positive that it is a virus/trojan. When the application appears click on Run USPL.
(USPL5c) Your phone should reboot and return to its bootloader but saying SPL v 1.15.USPL and USB at the bottom. If it does not show USB after some time, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable from your phone.
(USPL5d) If the rom you downloaded from step (USPL1d) does not include BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe then use the download from step (USPL1e). Make sure the .nbh file from step (USPL1d) and BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe are in the same folder.
(USPL5e) Run BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe and follow it as normal.
(USPL5f) Hard reset afterwards. Dude, this is tight!!! Awesome Yo!
Loveleh!
I am so frustrated!!!!!!!!! I have followed these instructions to a T, and I still get an error when trying to flash to 2.8. I keep getting the error: [240] File Open.
Can someone please help me???
Thanks!
You've been a busy boy!!!
Excellent post mate, was getting sick of posting this process myself. Now all I have to do is direct them all here, or to the wiki
Awesome stuff. I wish this was around the other night when I spent hours and hours reading and reading before finally sorting it out.
I failed at your step 7 however as I think it was 2am and I was passing out in front of the PC whilst rebooting and hard resetting over and over. Beer tonight then!
Cheers
This guide totally saved my life (A.K.A phone).
Thank you very much.
Wow... excellent mate!
Thanks!
Thanks for this great work.
Unfortunately Im stuck at step 5d

Yes, download the USB drivers from above and extract them to a folder. Mind where you extract them. Follow these steps:
(1) Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc
(2) Look for HTC USB Sync
(3) Double-click it and click the Driver tab
(4) Click Update Driver
(5) On new screen tell it not to use Windows Update
(6) Install from a specified location
(7) Check only box that says "Include this location in the search"
(8) Click Browse and locate the extracted drivers you downloaded
(9) After selecting click next and select the new driver
(10) After it is updated reboot and try USPL again
Let me know how it works.

What is giving you this message? The RUU? What step are you at in my guide? Do you get USPL run successfully? Does your bootloader on your phone show 1.15.USPL and USB when it's connected to your computer?
Keep up the good work bro and you'll be a MOD soon enough!!!

haha... that's a big job on this forum!
Thanks for the quick reply.
Up to step 5, everything is ok.
but It wont let me update saying its impossible to update the drivers.
1 more thing i want to mention is that i found those inf & cat files already present in c:\winnt\inf folder. ofcourse the size is not the same.
I will try to update the drivers again though Im starting to assume that my windows dont see a different between already present files and new extracted files.

You can force Windows to accept the new driver files. You just have to tell it that you "Have Disk" and locate those files. Once you do it will show a dialog where you can select the device and it should overwrite your current driver with the one from the download.

Hi i followed the beginner's guide. My HTC USB Sync is updated and I am in bootloader mode. But I am unable to install the USPL.exe. It keeps prompting me whether I am in bootloader mode if not please update your usb hub. Some one please help.

When in bootloader, does the bottom of bootloader screen change from 'serial' to 'usb'? If not you may need to update usb drivers on your pc.
Also, open activesync and go to connection settings. Make sure you have selected 'allow usb connections'
Any further queries should be posted in dummies guide to flashing.

I am wanting to updrage my rom for my HTC Touch HD and there are tick boxes saying that make sure u perfom these before you update:
Battery over 50%
ActiveSync
connect phone to computer using USB
Disable the standyby on PC
after i click click next and do the steps the process gets stucked on 0% buth on phone and computer and after few minutes it says error
So i am sure that i have done all those but not to sure if my phone was in Activesync mode or not.
When the phone is turned on and connected to the computer connects using Activesync fine but when i turn the phone off and go on Bootloader mode connection is lost (as soon as i turn the device off)
so can someone please help how to activesync on bootloader mode
UPDATE:
I did HSPL and then BlackstoneRUUWrapper and now its working (its not getting stuck on 0%) and actually % is increasing
Everyone Thanks in Advance. I will tell you all when its done.
If it says USB when you connect to the pc while in bootloader mode, you're good to go
ye it says USB at the bottom of the screen but the process always stays at 0% then after a while it gives Error
wich rom do you want to instal and have you instald hspl?

connect ur phone directly in boot loader rather than thru active sync..
Run the USPL 2..
and then start the rom flash.
jus tick all the req fields in the RUU.(be in the bootloader) cos it makes no difference..
this is all assuming u have win XP or Vista with the req drivers.
cheers
chetan
Have you followed all of the steps in the Dummies Guide to flashing? (See link in my signature.)
The fact that you are able to connect to Activesync is fine. There is no need to be in Activesync whilst flashing and while in bootlaoder mode.
Have you read through the tutorial thread? There is a troubleshooter faq there. I did my first flash using it yesterday with no problems at all
Please read and post future queries on flashing in this tutorial/guide thread
As im tired of new thread and posts how to root I will show with pictures and text exactly what to do!
1. Download unrevoked3 choose wildfire and click unrevoked3.
You should also read THIS, info from unrevoked.
2. install the usb drivers! Follow this guide to do that :
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:windows_hboot_driver_install
3. go to the settings in your phone, go to the applications meny, go to the development meny and make sure "USB debugging" are checked
4. start unrevoked3 plugin the phone if its not. The unrevoked3 reflash should now do alot of things: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE! (u can touch it but dont unplug or click any buttons)
5. it should now be done. And you should se a menu with green text in it.
6. Gratz you have manage to install a new custom recovery. lets start flash a new ROM.
7. start with backup, go down the menu with the volume buttons. and go to nandroid click the touch pad.
in the nandroid menu chose "- Backup"
let it do the backup and when its done you should be back at the start menu in your recovery.
8.Now lets flash the ROM wich you should have on your SDcard. if not click "reboot system now" and move the ROM you want to flash to the SDcard
9.to get back in the recovery. shut down the phone. and when you start it again have the touchpad pushed down and click the power button.
chose "BOOTLOADER" with the powebutton
let it load and then chose "RECOVERY" also with powerbutton
10. Chose factory reset. then go down the meny to "advanced" and then reset dalvik I think it says( cant check this now)
11. go down to the "install zip from sdcard"
"choose zip from sdcard"
and find the ROM or files you want to flash in that menu
..
What order you should flash the files in are best described at each ROMs thread
currently wildpuzzleROM is the only ROM.

SUB debugging?
USB ofc probably more typos in there ;D
Won't work for me. Installed the USB drivers ok, enabled USB debugging, but Revoked3 just sits there waiting for device when it's connected.
Anyone used it successfully?

same problem with me, not work....
try to unplug and plug the phone in again.. are you 100% sure the rigth drivers are installed ? if yes to both go to applications on the settings menu check unknown sources or something like that..
if it still doesnt work I dont know..
but my best guess.. is look at the USB driver guide again and follow it step by step..
Sussed it, Win 7 64bit was the problem. Switched to my 32bit Netbook and it worked a treat.

sick of ppl asking???? when there is not proper guide for newbie like me???
and pls don be upset that... Ur guide is not a complete one, left out some steps and also not clearly state... you are writing it as per your understanding and not helping newbies to go thru it steps by steps...
and FYI the usb debugging must be on for HTC Sync also, read the help menu in the HTC Sync it will show you how to switch it on...
and in between step 3 & 4 u need to power off the phone and switch it on by holding the power and the volume down button together to get into the bootloader mode... then it will run a lil of things and it will show you USB **** on the screen after it finished load.... then u can flash it with the unrevoked3 program...
ok i have done all the things, which shown on unrevoked... and i still face some problem pls help me all the masters...
its said :
Communications with Phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try Again...
any know whats wrong with the connection??? BTW i already uninstall the HTC Sync also... it can detect my phone but communication error...
have you tried to manually install the drivers at unrevoked site ? that was the problem when I got stuck..
do the unrevoked flash program say communication error. ?

yes i had done everything on the unrevoked site...
yes is the unrevoked program that say error... i have installed the driver for windows also and uninstall HTC Sync...
bro, sorry to be harsh but pls amend the guide it really left out the restart step, switch it on in boot loader mode and also the USB debugging mode, although HTC Sync mention that but remind ppl to switch that on... there is only a few steps that i know of coz i'm stuck in communication error...
well the restart in bootloader mode is in the driver guide wich i linked to, and the guide says to make sure usb debugging mode should be swiched on
cant help you with your problem tho
I tried again, and again, but the same problem as the first time. I use windows seven 32 bit OS.
I had exactly the same problem.
You must choose manually the driver to install (on windows 7).
Go to device manager like said in the unRevoked guide. When you click to browse for driver software, you can choose "Let me pick..." click it.
Then next, then click on Have a Disk
Search for the place where you extracted the drivers.
A list of possible device will appear, choose "Android Bootloader interface", next.
And it's done

Sir,
May I ask do I need to turn my phone into "bootloader mode" before going to step 4?
Looking forward to your reply. Thanks
This is a great guide for newbs.
Although I didn't use it, i'm new to HTC/Android phones and managed to complete the root.
If new people cannot follow this simple guide or get it to work by trial and error then rooting is not for them and should leave it well alone or else they will start moaning that there phones are bricked!
No you dont need to be in bootloader mode before step 4
I am trying to install 6.5 on my HTC touch HD.
i have looked at the guides, but i am getting nowhere......stuck at 0% on the flashing.
I want to flash Energys rom onto my phone.
Phone is currently
SPL 1.14.000
Radio 1.09.25.14
Rom 1.19.61.1 WWE
what do i need and how do i do it ?
i have downloaded
HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex,
SSPL-Manual-TouchHD,
Unsigned_HardSPL_for_Blackstone_OliNex,
Energy.BLACKSTONE.29018.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.Apr.18
i have tried on both WinXP and Win 7 Systems, same error 262
1- have you tried installing the htc usb sync drivers manually? -->google
2- do you ever see the tri-color bootloader screen? If not you could try to put it in bootloader manually? you can do that by holding vol down+power button. You do have to turn it of first, and you have to remove the usb cable. WARNING: do not pull out the usb cable while its flashing, you won't be able to start your phone then (you can still flash roms though)
hope this helps
when connecting device to pc does bottom of bootloader (tri colour screen) change from "serial" to usb"? If not you need to either update drivers (see link in Dummies Guide) or open activesync and ensure that "allow usb connections" is enabled in connection settings
If above is all ok then you need to follow guide and get yourself HSPL
If getting stuck at 0% try trouble shooting section and use SSPL
Either way, please post further queries regarding flashing in Dummies Guide thread
