Hi everyone.
I`m new here, and I am very sorry that I don`t read trough the whole forum, I know that answers to my questions are already posted, but here it goes :
I have the possibility to buy the Diamond tomorrow morning, but I need to give the seller an answer tonight.
I never had a WM device before, the most were Symbian phones from Nokia, and I am a little unsecure.
My needs are wi-fi, large screen, nice design, music&video playback, and fluid e-mail. As I know, the Diamond meets these requirements.
Considering all it has been said and done about this device, would you still buy it ?
Thanks, and sorry again for not reading the forum, but I lack the time until I need to give the answer.
I can only give you this: if you want to buy a touchscreen phone, buy one where you won't need a stylus.. I'm starting to get annoyed with this. But maybe cuz I have played around with the Iphone, which works alot better.
Some people still like the stylus, but I don't anymore..
As for WM goes.. I'm tired of the choppy animations.
GPS software and multimedia playback are nice though.. which are the greatest advantages..
It is absolutely necessary to use the stylus ? Isn`t the finger enough ?
I'd say, that u should go for it, if you don't mind the weak battery.
On the other hand there will be the HTC Touch HD coming shortly, so you might want to wait for that one. (To get that one or to get the Diamond cheaper).
Allthough I really don't like the weak battery and it's also quite some work to adapt the diamond to your needs, I still wouldn't like to exchange it against anything else available so far.
You can use your finger with the TouchFlo interface, but the rest not so much. Also typing is not that great. If you use the keyboard, u will have to use stylus. If you use the more finger friendly keyboard, you won't see half of the screen. I just gets irritating after a while. But beside that it is a nice phone (ok, they could do ALOT better with the battery). Good camera, good GPS, good sound when calling. It's complete..
Edit: I just remembered, like when ur going through ur contacts, it is very hard to flip or scroll. I think that's just WM, because Resco File Explorer works nice..
Thank you for your answers.
So for usual tasks ( looking for contacts, making calls, ) the finger is enough, right ? Texting and other stuff, with stylus.
Also, are there apps for reading e-books ? Like mobipocket on symbian ?
Does the phone freeze sometimes ? Or acts erratically ?
Considering that I actually like to "play" with and tweak devices, maybe I will give it a try.
If anyone wants to give other advices, please feel free.
Lots of tweaks and playing around with it.. Especially thanks to these forums! It is possible to use ur finger for usual tasks, so go for it.. texting is possible with finger, but because of the screensize and the big size of the keyboard, it is much better to use a smaller keyboard and use stylus..

diamond
1-weak battery life
2-using GPS the battrey only last 2 to 2:30 hour and the device goes hot
3-using wifi also the device goes hot
so you can say the weak point on diamond is the battery and need radio upgrade
im saying you a nokia fan im shore you now how to use Symbian phones SO
how about baying n96 or N95 8GB it has everything you want
N96
1-big screen
2-wifi
3-16 GB internal memory and micro SD slot
4-a lot of game and apps
5-and of cours your favorites OS
so the best choice for you is n96
hope i help you out
im a Windows moblie os fan
and sorry for my english
As I live in the UK the concept of actually buying a mobile phone is quite alien to me as you can get pretty much any phone for free with any monthy contract above £20 per month!! I certainly wouldn't pay the prices that the TD is sold for £400+.
Having said that, smartphones are far more flexible and usable than the 'dumb' phones from the likes of se, Nokia, Motorla etc. From my experience Symbian and WM are both showing their age and are a little unstable but WM easily beats Symbian and with the TD Touchflo 3D interface it looks good too.
The only real problems with the TD are the camera (good resolution but very poor in low light conditions) and the battery life (great for low usage but will drain really quick if used for music, web etc.
The phone is far smaller than a N95/N96 and the majority of other smartphones so when you consider this the battery life is actually not bad.
If you do get the TD make sure you upgrade the ROM. Lots of XDA members will recommend using a cooked (custom) ROM, but for a beginner using the official 1.93 version will result in a fantastic user experience and you can always use a cooked ROM when you become more experienced.
Forgot to mention that ROM 1.93 also resolves the issue of excessive heat coming from the battery compartment.
I`m not really a Nokia or Symbian fan, but those are the ones I had in the last couple of years As long as it works ok, I don`t really care if it`s WM, Symbian, or something else.
The N95 or the N96 are not in my taste, as far as design goes.
Yes levellerbob, in a lot of countries, there is a very nice policy regarding cost of cell phones on contract from operators, but as I`m not that lucky, I need to know a lot of things before I pay Still, thanks for all the advices.
If I decide on the Diamond, I`ll be on this forum all day everyday

if that so go for the diamond
ah and dont forget to see the diamond pro maybe you will like it
Ok, I know there are various threads that deal with this topic and i have read through them but I had a more specific question.
The Fuze has more memory and faster speeds than the kaiser but my question pertains to TF3D on the devices. Even through the Fuze has more memory as stated above, TF3D runs fairly well on the kaiser. I wanted to know if the general populous beleives that the Fuze would be worth the price and if it would in fact be much better than the Kaiser. I currently use Leo's Manilla 3D V4 and besides a few known issues, I like it. It is fairly fast and stable for the most part. Do you believe that the performance will actually be simialr in speed once the true potential of the Kaiser is unlocked? The Fuze also has a camera with "auto focus" this sounds like the same crappy camera from the tilt... Anyone have any input on that? Is there anyone out there that has both devices or at least used both devices? Thank you for your time.
P.S. If you do not have a helpful post then please don't post to this thread. I have read many forums and reviews so if you feel this post is a "waste of your time" then please by all means do not post to this thread...
I too have touchflo 3D on my Tilt/Kaiser, which I love, (ironically it uses the fuze theme for it too) but the fuze in store just seemed soo responsive, the screen soo easy to use, and best of all no bevel on the screen! i hated that on the kaiser. but for me the big deal is it looks nice, vga screen which also looks nice, and the g-sensor that it has with it. Mix that with the people here at XDA and id be happy with paying 400-500$ full price for it.
I have seen the fuze (I have a Tilt) and even though the screen looks smaller (I have not measured it compared to the Fuze) the resolution is soooo much crisper! I also realized that it has some hardware that makes it responsive to position changes, Opera will automatically adjust when you set the phone horizontally! I am seriously planning to upgrade to a Fuze. Shadowline, do you have the roms/themes for the tilt so that they can look like the fuze? I saw the captures on the bottom of your message and I would love to make my Tilt look like that... thanks!
Thanks for the input guys. I can purchase the Fuze at employee pricing but I am still waiting to see what that is. ATT does not give their employees that great of a deal on the hardware. Either way I think the Fuze may be the way to go. I still believe that there is so much more that we can get out of the Tilt for the time being and thanks to the experts here at XDA, we are seeing that become a reality.
to thoughs who have tf3d on there kaisers, doesnt it not alow it to shut down? or was this fixed somewhere?
On my kaiser running TF3D and Leo's V4 Manilla 3D rom, I have to manually turn off TF3D then I can cycle the power on and off. It is a little annoying but other than that I have no issues. I can turn TF3D on when I want to dazzle friends and toggle it off when I want more speed. All in all I like that rom even with the flaws.
I've been google'n for 2 days and haven't been able to find anything worthy of an upgrade from a Kaiser ..
My mom needs a pda/phone and she wants my trusty Kaiser, but unless I find something worth having she's not getting it.
The Touch HD looks fantastic .. but .. isn't coming to the US [email protected]#[email protected]
Anybody know of something coming soon, available now I should be looking at ?
ATT Fuse doesn't look like any kind of an upgrade.
Thanks for your comments !
What I use the Kaiser for :
#1 Web Browsing
#2 VPN via PPTP to work network, and telnet to a as/400 machine from there
#3 Handful of WinMO apps that I use for various things (weather, poker blind timers, etc)
I occasionally talk on the phone too
hey man AT&T Fuze, it's called the Raphael on these forums, it's a sexy phone and has Opera 9.5 built in. and it can do everything the Tilt does minus some buttons and has a G-sensor
-Mike
Next to the KAISER I had the MWg ZINC II for a while. It had an incredible performance, much better than on the TYTN. However, there are 2 things I couldn't stand on that thing: no hardware softkeys underneath the screen and a weird keyboard with strangely arranged characters. Other than that it was a great device. I still would have gotten used to its keyboard but I couldn't stand the fact that it did not have any HW softkeys underneath the screen.
However, even though this seems to be an interesting question, I do believe that this thread is misplaced since you ask for something "that is not the KAISER"!
It might have been better placed in the GENERAL BOARD?

I guess I could run over to ATT and look at one. It just doesn't look all that appealing at first glance. I see nothing on it other than a VGA screen vs the tilt, and I'm losing the "tilt" function that I've grown to enjoy.
I don't think I'll ever use a G-Sensor for anything. I have opera 9.5 on the Tilt.
Maybe I'll like it better in-person.

I'm looking for opinions from current kaiser owners since they'll know what I'm replacing. I want something better than a kaiser. Only a kaiser owner would know what that is.
I never use my softkeys so I don't think losing them would be an issue.
I guess the Fuze might be an option but the screen on that thing looks smaller than a fuze. I want a BIGGER screen
Well, I upgraded from an 8525 to the Fuze, and am throughly dissapointed.
The screen is awesome, amount of memory is awesome, and the keyboard is awesome.
Everything else sucks. The hardware buttons at the bottom are extremely spotty. If you don't press the perfect spot, with the perfect amount of pressure, the device presses the wrong button for you.
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446246&highlight=hardware+buttons
I flashed to the Elite ROM, and that made things a little better in general, but the usability of the device is getting me down.
So I'm off to research the Tilt/Kaiser.
I looked for what's the next upgrade after the Tilt/Kaiser but didn't find anything worthy. I think much of this stems from just how significant the upgrade the Tilt/Kaiser was from it's previous models, the 8525 and 8125.
I looked at the Fuze but while it does have some additional features and speed, it's not the leap ahead that the Tilt/Kaiser was. The Touch HD which you already found is the only thing I also found that I'd consider a worthy successor. I thought of buying one and having it imported but from everything I read the radio won't work here in the USA.
So for now and the foreseeable future, I'm still on my Tilt.

I think the radio works fine here, you just don't get 3G.
I'm not in a 3G area, so maybe I could overlook that. It seems like I tend to turn OFF 3G on those rare occasions when I am since it sucks the battery down so bad.
Touch HD looks very nice but maaaaaaaaan it's pricey !

I think the hardware for a G1 looks good, too bad it's running android and not winmo.
It's got everything I want. Nice display size, hardware keyboard, 3G support
Nobody took a look at the Touch Pro(Raphael) or Sony X1 ?
Touch Pro is the Fuze, which was mentioned in the first post.
Racer i would look in the Raphael Forum and see if the problems/complaints are going to affect you terribly, from what i gather i'll be happy with the upgrade.
Best of luck!

Mentioned Touch Pro in first post (att fuze)
Not really much, if any, of an upgrade.
Sony X1 might be possible, but it's SOOOO darned expensive !
Another option would be an unlocked Palm Treo Pro.... runs win 6.1, decent phone, same specs as the tilt I believe

I'm returning mine as well. The D-pad is useless when surfing the net, the keyboard is really cramped compared to the Tilt, and button placement very odd.
The screen is amazing and the amount of RAM phenomenal, but it isn't quite as fast as I'd hope for and there just aren't enough programmable buttons to make it useful for me.
When my ETEN Glowfiish M700 died I spent weeks debating -- do I spend $600 for a new Tytn II or do I go for broke and get a Touch Pro for $900?
In the end, while the features of the Pro sounded very nice, I decided I just better save some money and get the kaiser.
Very impressed with the Kaiser so far. Video slowness not-withstanding it is still much more responsive than the Eten. And there is certainly tons of help, software recommendations and more available on these very forums
I recently came into a little extra money, so I could get the Pro now if I wanted to. But I'm going to keep the Kaiser and wait to see what the WM7 machines look like next year -- or should I say in two years
Perfectly happy with my Fuze. TF3D, VGA screen, abundant storage room, extremely fast and responsive, absolutely love the hardware KB (many more buttons without having to press the FN key) and more. Suffice it to say, I am extremely happy with my Fuze. Very much so.

Guess I better just run over to ATT and play around with one (fuze). Maybe I'll like it better in person than I do in "spec sheet"
What phone did you trade from, P1Tater ?
Thanks !

Tilt. Which I still have as a backup. Especially after my OIL fiasco.
EDIT:
Let me do say that the stock rom sucks. It is extremely slow and constantly lagging behind. I've flashed a new BlackStone radio and a custom rom and I absolutely love it. But let me emphasize, in the store, the Fuze is slow at best. It even has a ATT tab with all of their bloatware locked to that tab. However, NATF has already done a stock rom fixing most, if not all of the slow/laggy responsiveness. I have literally flashed every single rom already cooked for the Raphael/Fuze and found my favorite (today). This thing flies.

I agree, i'm completely satisfied with my upgrade to the fuze as well.
Well basically I may be getting a HTC diamond, but would like to know some things from people who actually own them.
My mum has the HTC and has got it replaced so now its a brand new phone. She has offered to switch for my Nokia N95 but Im unsure. I am trying it this weekend to get better used to it and see if I want to switch.
All I hear from people that don't own WM is WM sucks I hate it blah blah blah. Which I pretty much know is complete bollocks.
I just really want to know how easy it is to live with day to day.
I am only 15 and do text a lot and am quite concerned about the screen size and no physical keys.
And what sort of customization is there?
Haha sorry for being all over the place but answers are appreciated!
Thanks, Ben.
there are software keyboards like phonepad which does t9
if I were you I would try it out and see if I liked it
thanks, I will give that a try.
I have a few more questions though:
Where can I get a 3.5mm jack for it? (UK) I bought a cheap one off ebay that failed.
Also, Whats all the ROM thing about? Is there an Easy F.A.Q about it all?
Thanks, Ben
for a 15yo who texts a lot, I'd recommend getting the touch pro or something else with a physical keyboard. I don't think the Diamond is for casual users because it's very finnicky and a lot of customization is needed if you really want to enjoy the phone. This is not a knock on the Diamond at all because I LOVE mine, but I'm giving you advice that you might not be enjoying it as much because at 15yo, I wouldnt like flashing ROMs or installing cabs anyway. But hey, who knows, it might be different in your case =)
Well I do love technology so learning is all good for me when flashing ROM's I'm always interested in that kind of thing.
As for custumisation I love that sort of things and can spend hours and hours just fiddling with tech.
Its just really the SMS which Im worried about. But I suppose when I break it down I only send 20/30 texts a day so maybe I could live.
Ahh I dont know. I guess living with it this weekend will help. The device is insured anyway so even if I brick it a new one will be sent right away
what is WinMo 6.5 all about? Its not even released yet? Is it worth upgrading or not?

Well, i'm a "new" windows mobile user (3 months), before that i had a n95, so here's what i think: The diamond screen is bigger and has double the definition than the n95 one. The Diamond screen keyboard (EzInput) is incredible, at first you feel strange, but after about a week you get used and is really easy to type (even with my fat fingers ), since it's a "full keyboard".
The factory Rom for the diamond is a little slower than the symbiam (n95 OS), but with some modifications from this forum it becomes much faster, but still crashes one or other time, and you have to turn it off/on (about once a week, when i'm doing too much stuff at the same time and there's no more free memory. nothing to worry about).
The N95 is much better for music (with the stereo speakers and dedicated keys) and photos (flash, higher resolution), but for all the other things you can't even compare it. On the diamond, the web navigation and the GPS are much better, using to edit documents on the office is really easier with the touch screen, seeing your e-mails is faster and the "phone" functions are really simple.
Now the best thing about WinMo are the apps you can download. You have great programs to do quite about anything. Like a PC remote controller, a torrent downloader, a podcast and RSS reader, and games like a emulator of Snes and Playstation 1, quake 3 arena, Call of Duty 2, etc.
As for customisation, it's praticcaly infinite. you can use and write different today plugins and screens, and make it look like anything, from your Pc desktop to an Iphone, just take a look at some posts here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428463 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=508429
Just for you to be sure i don't work for microsoft , don't be fooled: out of factory the diamond is slow, doesn't has so many good Apps and has an unstable system. The cutomization and tweaks are the things that make all the difference! Good luck with your choice.
Oh, and i'm 22 and i don't work with my mobile or with computers, so i just use Winmo cause it's a lot of fun.
Well day 1 and Im loving it. Looks like I'll be keeping this
.
just look arround on this forum and you will find allot of interresting programs and addons for your phone
all things makes live a little easyer
I switched from a Samsung Jack ("Blackjack II" in the states) to this phone because the Samsung wasn't compatible with a lot of the WM apps I wanted to use. The Diamond does a hell of a lot more and does it a lot better. I will say, though, that texting is much more of a pain when compared to a phone with a full hardware keyboard. I mess up a lot unless I'm using a stylus. Maybe it's just me.
Well guys... the time has come for me to move on. I recently got a 32gb Iphone 3GS last week and love it! The main reason I moved to it was for its speed and incredible improvements in features over the 3G, as well as the amazing touchscreen keyboard. I really had wanted to go with the Touch Pro 2 for AT&T, but could not wait till October for the release. Also, I had a chance to try out the TMobile version of the Touch Pro 2, but was a little let down by it. I expected it to be much better from all the rumors surrounding it on the web, but it wasn't. I was hoping the VGA resolution and wider screen would make the all new touchdscreen keyboard on the TP2 as good as the Iphone, but it wasn't very accurate. I loved the hardware keypad buttons my Kaiser, but since the TP2 doesn't have those and is full touchscreen unless the keyboard is slid out, I figured I might as well get the Iphone since it's a touchscreen as well. The TP2 seemed a little slow compared to what I thought it would be from the online reviews. The slide out keypad was very nice, and much better than our Kaiser's. Another thing that WM doesn't have which is why I switched to the Iphone, is its Facebook app with chat. I use Facebook at work daily, and love the ability to be able to see who's online on my phone. I had been under the belief that I would always stick with Windows Mobile since it is so customizable. I loved my HTC Kaiser, which I successfully converted from a Tilt to a TyTN II by changing the housing and adding the front camera. I am truly amazed at how much I learned about this device since I joined this forum, from flashing custom roms, to changing registry settings, and configuration settings to make the device work even better. Before this forum, my Tilt was a joke since it was so slow. Now, it's amazingly fast, and very functional.
Basically, I just wanted to thank all the members on this forum who helped me whenever I had any problems. All of you were so helpful and were quick to respond. I also wanted to thank all the chefs and developers who put all their hard work in to making those custom roms for free, and updating them frequently. I really enjoyed the WM 6.5 releases you guys created, even though it isn't officially out . Lol.
My Tilt has been the first phone that I have owned that I still truly love, even after getting a new Iphone. I will be attending Cal Poly University in a few weeks, majoring in Electrical Engineering, and plan to bring my Tilt with me. I still browse this forum almost daily, since the developments, along with the members, are just great. I plan to still update my Tilt with new roms that come along, since it just seems wrong not to, and is something I have been doing forever. I am not truly leaving this forum, just won't be here as often since I have a new daily device. I will still be around here though to offer help to people who have problems or need advice.
Anyways, sorry for the long post, but just wanted to thank everyone, instead of just basically leaving on a bad note saying WM sucks. I believe it can only improve, and can't wait to see what lies ahead for it. Thanks again.

I'm so on the edge as well....have the Tilt all modded out, and want the Touch Pro 2, but I keep seeing my brother doing all this stuff on his iphone and so I've been looking for an unlocked used one to try out on T-mobile. If the TP2 wasn't $350 bucks!!! I'd already have it....

I too went to the Iphone. Sigh
Thanks for the positive comments left by the few of you that did. I am in no way biased toward the Iphone, nor WM, I just appreciate a fine device, regardless of its make. For those of you that have criticized the Iphone, I ask you this, "Have you even tried the new 3GS out yourself, or are you just basing your opinion on responses from other people?" Before the 3GS, I never would have considered the Iphone, since it's features really weren't that great. The 3GS has some amazing features, that truly swayed me. There are just some things that truly make the Iphone better. I was sick of not being able to do what friends of mine were able to do with there older Iphones, like Facebook chat, as well as get some of the amazing apps available from the app store. The 3MP camera with autofocus is truly amazing! Also the amount of storage space on the phone is truly great. For me, I own a MacBook Pro, so switching to the Iphone made compatibility between the two much easier. Not here to criticize devices, just here to clear up some misconceptions about them.

Good luck. The 3G is pretty good, but for me, the 3GS was the only model that was actually an upgrade for me from the Tilt. I love taking pictures and videos, so getting a basic 3G would have been a downgrade due to a lower MP camera, and no video recording. Not to mention that the 3G can't do tethering, unless it is jail broken I believe. Plus the 3GS is twice as fast!

If you really think that this thing is going to take decent pictures and video for you, you are going to be sadly disappointed. I went to a wedding yesterday with my 3Gs 16GB Black, the camera is great outdoors with natural light in ideal settings, but so is my " dollar store " keychain digital camera. Inside in appropriate wedding lighting, it was useless.
Aside from that , what do you have A.D.D. ? Chumley Ex and I both have Tilts and 3Gs' , we haven't said goodbye. It's like being married and having a girlfriend on the side , can't you do both ?
I am a loyal Tilt-er (for the past two years), and I just tried out a 3GS this weekend to see what all the fuss was about.
It is a beautiful machine, but there are several things that I still find inferior to the Tilt:
1. Soft keyboard makes typing long messages difficult.
2. Can't sync POP properly. I can delete messages off the server from my phone, but when I delete messages off the server and I've already downloaded them to my phone, they stay on my phone. Tilt handles that and keeps all POP inboxes synced to the server.
3. Switching between email accounts is incredibly tedious and time-consuming, having to back out of one and then go into another, especially if you have many folders.
4. Still no GPS app with text-to-speech for street names.
5. Horrendous battery life.
Did I miss anything? Am I wrong about any of these? I do like the iPhone, but it doesn't feel like I'll be productive enough. Thoughts? Thanks.

Wish you a happy life with your iPhone.
hey.. Where can I find "all" those tricks to get my Kaiser faster btw? There's not a general topic saying "get it fast" and and I can't make a accurate search since I don't know what makes it faster?
quite off topic.. hope someone can tolerate and help =)
bye mate =)

Tilt is bulky and slow compared.
Tilt music and video play back suck, if you can get video working at all
Internet access and browsing is slow and clunky compared.
Can't play my DRM itunes library on Tilt.
Tilt can be "fixed" for all of this , but 3Gs out of the box does it all,
Both your list and mine go on and on, which is why I have both.
The cool thing about the tilt was that 2 years ago it did pretty much everything the newer iphone do now. When the tilt hit the stands the iphone was only edge, it had no gps etc.
The tilt can go to all the nice flash pr0n site, the iphone only gets one.
the iphone is smooth and it just feels like something from the future.
