hello people i need help with my phone i have no idea what i did. i was running 4.0.4 and what not. now im stuck. phone model is android dev phone 1.6 kernel version is 2.6.23-00479-g3ctdf37 [email protected] #19 build number os dream_devphone-userdebug 1.6 drc83 14721 test-keys what did i do?!?!? i just wanna get back to cyanogen 4.0.4 lol
If you have a custom recovery image then put 4.04 on your sdcard, wipe, flash and reboot.
i think im back on rc29
Then use telnet to flash the custom recovery image...
1. Download recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
2. Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
3. All files must be on the root of your SD card.
4. Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
5. After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
6. Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
7. If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
8. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery recovery.img
* cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img

I'd suggest using Amon Ra's Recovery....
did that now trying to flash 4.0.4 and what not
i see cyanogens boot screen lets see if it works again. lol 1.6 looks good but still dont know how to do it right . tried to flash the new 4.2 but said something about a boot image then i was all of a sudden with a welcome to android dev phone 1 screen

Dear XDA-Helpers,
First of all I want to apologize. Because likely the most of you will think the answers on my question are already posted. But I've searched and searched and I don't have found the solution. (Yes I saw this thread too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487187 It's the same question but that didn't help too.)
So this is what I did:
I wanted to test out the Eclair 2.0 Rom, so I flashed that over Cyanogen. Then I wanted back to 1.6, and used this method. ( http://www.gphone.org.hk/cgi-bin/ch/topic_show.cgi?id=60&bpg=1&age=0)
So I was on 1.5 and rooted with the one click method. Then I flashed the signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip ROM. When that was finished I reboot my G1, and then I wanted to flash Cyanogen, but when I went back to recovery mode, the orignal HTC recovery was back and I was unrooted, now I also cannot flash any DREAIMG.nbh because when I go in bootloader it says "not allowed".
I really don't know what to do now.
Some specs about my G1:
Android G1 with Donut 1.6
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37 [email protected] #19
Build Number: dream_devphone-userdebug 1.6 DRC83 14721 test-keys
About the error of the bootloader:

You're not unrooted. You just didn't read the instructions carefully enough.
Use fastboot to flash a modified recovery (I prefer CM's).
Code:
start your phone in fastboot usb mode.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
Once that is done, go into the recovery and you can flash roms again.
This time FOLLOW the instructions...
After you've flashed the htc recovery image, do NOT restart the phone, simply flash cyanogens rom right after that, THEN reboot.
next time please post in the QnA section
you might also like to try RA-Dream-v1.5.2 - there are lots of extra options in there like partitioning your card for swap, apps2sd etc

Sorry for wrong section, I was used to use RA-Dream recovery, but since I don't have root anymore, I cannot flash a other recovery..

Well, when I typ 'su'/'sudo' in Terminal Emulator, it says no permission or something, so I think I don't have root anymore.. will your method fix my Bootloader? I used to get a screen with some skateboard but now I get a screen with a few colours.. and then it says 'not allowed'
Well when you flash the htc recovery image and then reboot the phone it will flash the stock recovery. That's why you need to flash cyanogens rom right after it.
But I don't really see why you're at the stock bootloader again now.
So you're on 1.6 with the stock bootloader? And the bootloader won't flash the .NBH, Looks like you need a goldcard.
Thanks for your answer!

yes I'm on 1.6 with the coloured boot loader and I can't flash a .NBH file, it says not allowed. What is a goldcard? You mean this? http://revskills.de/pages/goldcard.html
It says I need to give them my SD Card Serial (CID), but I have no idea what it is and where I can find it..
Here now the problem is that you cannot flash anything from the bootloader coz its telling 'Not allowed' And not even flash through recovery coz its the non - Rooted Stock one...
So here you go may be this would help you to get out of this problem.
First try this...
1. Get Amon_RA Recovery image into any folder.
2. Then Start your Phone in Boot loader mode
3. Open Command Prompt on your PC (Windows > Run > Type 'cmd' > Enter)
4. Browse to the folder where the Recovery image is located using cd <folder>
5. Connect the Phone to the PC via USB
6. Type fastboot boot <recovery_img_name.img> in the cmd window.
The Phone may boot into the Rooted Recovery...
If Not Try this..
Remember when G1 was first rooted ?
We had to type telnetd and then it installed the telnet application...
Try it...
Put the downloaded recovery image into the sdcard means /sdcard/recovery.img
1) Go to the Terminal emulator & type "telnetd" and press enter.
2) Press Home
3) Goto the market and download "Telnet"
4) Open Telnet and connect to localhost : 23
5) Press enter and you should see a #
6) Now type the following and press enter at the end of each line
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery cm-recovery-1.4.img
cat /sdcard/recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
7) Now try going into Recovery mode hope this might work...
Then Post ur info here...
Thank you!

The first method did not work because, when I go in Bootloader my PC don't detect that the G1 is connect, it just don't do anything.
The second method didn't work too, because when I typ in terminal 'telnetd' it says no permission...
He can't flash from the boot loader as he doesn't have the engineering boot loader installed.
The other option might work though. If not, a goldcard will be the only way out.
This process is a bit tricky though.
First of all you will need the cid of your sdcard, to get this, type the following command in the terminal emulator.
Code:
cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid > /sdcard/serial.txt
The cid will be saved within the root directory of your sdcard.
Now comes the tricky part, you need to reverse the string byte-wise. Here is an example.
This is what your cid can look like.
Code:
03534453553038478021021a320087be
Now split it up in pairs.
Code:
03|53|44|53|55|30|38|47|80|21|02|1a|32|00|87|be
Next, reverse the string byte-wise.
Code:
be|87|00|32|1a|02|21|80|47|38|30|55|53|44|53|03
Your reversed cid will look like.
Code:
be8700321a0221804738305553445303|
Now, take that cid and plug it into the goldcard generator you posted earlier and enter your email.
https://ssl.webpack.de/revskills.de/pages/goldcard.html
You will be send an goldcard.img file.
This last part is important and requires knowledge with linux and the dd command
1. Format your sdcard with Fat32.
2. Open a shell and type dd if=location_of_goldcard/goldcard.img of=/dev/sdx(where x is the letter that stands for your sdcard)
3. When it gives you a prompt saying the write was successful, drag the .NBH to the root of the sdcard, plug it in your G1, and try again.
You are welcome to hit me up on MSN if you need further assistance.

That's because you're on 1.6. I believe this only worked in 1.0 where the keyboard was attached to a root console, so anything you typed on the keyboard would go straight to the console with root permissions. This flaw has been fixed.

okay, it's solved! Thanks to Bavilo for helping me out on msn

Ok im a newbie, and i don't know nearly as much as any developer here but i've been doing my best to follow the rom updates for the g1. I have installed all the CM updates, and also before that the jesusfreke rom.
I installed this CM5 and while it worked well the battery was draining, i tried to reboot into recovery mode to do a wipe and reinstall to see if it would help, to my horror the recovery doesn't start it just stays in the G1 screen.
The phone boots into android fine, but won't let me get into recovery to change anything. I think this is due to the fact that i ran CM updater with a theme and might have been for 4.x? so it hanged but i thought it wasn't a problem.
I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help point me into were i should look, i looked every where and haven't found the right information or understood it.
Thanks.
ok guys im not sure why the recovery was taken out but i was finally able to get it back running this is what i did which i found in other sites.
from an old post in the forum :
"Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery recovery.img

hi, after installing the rom manager premium and installing the latest nightly build i no longer can access the recovery. i installed the latest recovery the rom manager said to do, and now i reboot my phone and hold the home button and it just stays in the g1 screen. if i reboot and hold the home button while the phone is connected to usb the phone enters the fastboo g1 bootlader but in the same g1 screen but with red letteres on the corner. i need help. thanks.
fastboot still works but i dont want to have to do all that process again
I would just flash another recovery with fast boot. You won't ned to re root

I ran into this issue as well, assuming it's a bug with the latest update of ROM Manager (which I just updated this morning prior to getting this issue.)
Not sure if it had anything to do with the fix but after some fiddling I decided to try reinstalling the ROM Manager recovery (after reinstalling the amon ra recovery from the same app with no success) and it worked, YMMV obviously but that worked for me.
This happened to me too!
I want to root my g1.
i did this steps
1. Plug your USB cable into your computer and then plug your phone in.
2. Mount your SD card by sliding down the notification bar and selecting mount.
3. Go to My Computer and access your SD card.
4. BACKUP ANY FILES THAT YOU WANT ONTO YOUR COMPUTER. VERY IMPORTANT!
5. Go back to my computer and right click on the drive that is your sd card. Click format. Choose FAT32 from the drop down and hit the format button. This removes all data from your memory card.
6. Once the format is complete: drag and drop "DREAIMG.nbh & Update.zip files that you downloaded into the sd card. (DO NOT create a folder or anything, just put it right in the SD card)
7. Unmount your phone by going through the notification bar and then unplug your phone Turn your phone off. from your computer.
8. Press and hold the camera+end key until until you see a screen with colored bars, then let go. This is the bootloader. The screen will turn gray with blue writing on it.
But 0028002 Not Allow problem.
i need a help
sorry for my bad english
thanks
Because those instructions are very us centric.. and maybe a tad dated.
If you have a T-Mobile phone look up androot and installing a custom recovery (re-recovery) this won't require the downgrade and is thus easier/safer. Particular than flashing an out of region rom.
If its not T-Mobile more info on the phone will help.
i'm root my phone with universal androot 1.6.1
what's next ?
i want to cyanogen mod 6. (2.2 froyo)
phone info:
Model Number = T-Mobile G1
Firmware version = 1.6
Build number = DMD64
Well you are at a good point.. rooted and operating just need to break out of the T-Mobile system some to replace everything on the phone..
The following will give you an idea.. but please read it all carefully first or you may find yourself while probably not bricked without a functioning android install.
You will want the following
1) Download and install both the android SDK and fastboot http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s2
2) Download the flash image tool http://cyanogen-files.carneeki.net/flash_image.zip
3) Download ra-recovery http://rapidshare.com/files/387558152/recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img MD5Sum: 11ae63afee9813a9b76cb3f7fd5ac2ad
unzip flash_image.zip and put the resulting flash_image in the same place as recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
form your computers command line run the following (preferable from the same directory as flash_image and recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img, some people find it easier that this also be the tools directory adb is contained in but if you are comfortable at the command line this is not needed)
Code:
adb push flash_image /data/local/flash_image
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/flash_image
adb push recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img /data/local/recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
adb shell
this will now place you on a command prompt on the phone continue:
Code:
su
flash_image recovery /data/local/recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
exit
exit
now power down the phone and turn on while holding down the home button you ought to now be in ra-recovery optionally run a nandroid backup and then you can continue to install 1.33.2003
After 1.33.2003 is installed you can either continue the instructions on that link to 1.33.2005 *OR* check out Custom MTD
Once all of that is done its off to http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Upgrading_from_CyanogenMod_4.2_to_CyanogenMod_5/6 to install the rom.
can i follow this guide from II) Flashing a Recovery Image ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727688
because i think its easier than your guide for me
Two things,
1) flashreq expects a root exploit that wont exist on your rom I'm unsure if it will fall back on using su for root
2) if you feel its easier you don't like or are confuses with installing the sdk/fastboot, while there may be ways around it (rom manager comes to mind) if you ever run into trouble in the future you will need it.. once you learn how it works some you will find it easier thank messing with the apk.. as for the shell commands they will be cut copy and paste..
3) I don't recommended rom manager because if something goes wrong and you find yourself without a rom or recovery you will have a hard time getting your phone to boot without a gold card (once the engineering spl is installed 1.33.2005 you can take that route)
--
As I said before your phone is still running the T-Mobile rom take your time and understand the process and options to installing the rom.
My english is bad
i dont understand this post.
what must i do to root my phone now ?
So these are the steps I did, I HAVE A CUSTOM RECOVERY, AND BOOTLOADER MY BOOTLOADER SAYS SERIAL10. I have done a backup in recovery in the telnet app I type su and I still have no root access. I have installed UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk on the phone but the program crashes. so I guess root is stopping me at this point. I am trying to upgrade the original rom with a new build and a stable 1 any ideas also........ THANKS IN ADVANCED"
The phone looks not to be rooted yet I went step by step.
LOWER BUILD
Preparing to Get Root on your Phone
1. Format your phone's SD card to FAT32 mode:
* Hook your phone up to your computer using a USB cable and then wait for the notification to show up in your title bar of your phone.
* Click the notification, and then click "Mount".
* A new removable disk should show up on your computer. Right click it and select Format, and select FAT32 as the file system type.
2. Download and unzip the RC29. Copy the DREAIMG.nbh file to the SD card. (RC29 for US)
3. Turn the device power off.
4. Hold Camera button, and press Power button to entry boot loader mode. You should see a gray/white screen with instructions to flash your phone with the update on your SD card. If you don't see that, make sure you followed the instructions properly.
5. As per the on-screen instructions, press the Power button to start upgrade procedure. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS.
6. After it is finished, perform the restart your phone.
Rooting your RC29:
Instructions:
1. Download recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img and copy it to your SD card
2. Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
3. All files must be on the root of your SD card.
4. Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
5. After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter.
6. Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
7. If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
8. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery RA-dream-v1.7.0.img
* cat recovery.img > /system/RA-dream-v1.7.0.img
1. Power off your phone.
2. Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
3. You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
4. If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
5. Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
6. After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.
7. REBOOTS BACK INTO RECOVERY.
If you want to root try a easy method!
Only Download UniversalAndroot and copy it on your sdcard!
Then open it with a Filemanager and install it!
After open the app and click on root and wait!
After this you device is rooted!
the way i rooted my g1 was very simple all you have to do is pay close attention to this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR0HpUVv-BY you'll notice in the video description there is another link on how to get your firmware from 1.6 to 1.5 (must do this first)
(there's a newer version of AmonRA 1.0.7) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
if you have any trouble figuring this out i will help you step by step jus send me an e-mail to [email protected] so i can answer your questions faster! but honestly its very simple jus pay close attention.
(Optional) also there is the new radio 2.22.28.25 and hboot 1.33.0013d which makes your phone run much faster and allows you to get an extra 14mb on your ram.
the only thing to be careful with is flashing certain froyo roms you need to flash a 2708/2825 kernel with it for it to flash correctly also with some hero/sense roms.
the link to the kernel (froyo) is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=670
and to get your g1 to the new radio and hboot follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139 this step is tricky but again if you pay close attention you shouldnt have any issues.
at this point you should be free to start flashing some cool roms!! 2 of my personal favorites are FroyobyLazlo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929678 and zachattack052 & xillius200's 2.1&1.5Hero: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670414
Happy flashing and good luck! hope this helped you out..
If anything happened and you dont wanna risk bricking your phone you can always Un-Root and get back to stock firmware by following this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350
at this point you will be back to original stock 1.0 firmware, from here you can either wait for the normal system update to show up which could take up to 24 hours, or if your impatient like me you can manually install the updates to get back to 1.6, i forget where i got the files for the updates and i dont know how to put file links in these posts so you can also email me and i will send you the zip files via e-mail [email protected]
