Hello there,
Thank you for taking the time to read this thread. I am posting here because quite honestly I have NO idea where to start searching for a solution. Lately i've been experimenting with some of the Hero ports in the developer section, particularly JesterBlur and Slick Willy (and previous version). For some reason, the texting application screws up after it has been used for a little bit. The first symptoms ive noticed is the "This message cannot be sent" while having full signal and 3G, just randomly says that. Then, when the phone reboots, it sends a text message from earlier in the conversation randomly. Finally, the times are messed up and so my response to the other persons question would be above their question, as if I answered before they responded, but the times on the messages are correct...
Anyone have any clue how to fix this?? Thank you!
I cant say I know how to "FIX" your problem but in my experience with texting issues I would simply redownload the rom, not just reflash since the problem likely lies within the MMS.apk and sometimes files become corrupt during download even though you may not realize. It happens alot more than you may think.
I would suggest you do a nandroid or some other sort of backup to save your data, SMS, settings, etc. if you need to. Then I would completely delete and recreate my ext2/3 partition. This may not be necessary but the way I see it is if you are going to wipe, why not just reformat for a completely clean slate. Then reflash the ROM as usual.
Note: you do not have to delete your FAT or linux-swap partitions to delete and recreate your Ext2/3. I'm sure you know how to do your partitioning but if you need any instruction just shoot me an email. [email protected]

OK... I dont know how many times this answer or question has been asked on XDA, but I know for a fact that since i have had my first ever pocket pc phone, the PP-6600, which was about mid-2005, this situation has been a general problem with Virtualy everyone who has ever owned a PPC or
smartphone! (Maybe i will get my name in lights as a sticky post for this answer!!)
BUT HERES THE SITUATION... YOUR PHONE BEGINS TO GRADUALLY BECOME SLOWER. SOON ENOUGH YOU CANT EVEN SLIDE YOUR SCREEN AND ACCESS YOUR KEYBOARD WITHOUT A 30-45 SECOND DELAY, OR IN MORE EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES YOUR PHONE BEGINS TO LOCK UP SO MUCH THAT EVEN A SOFT RESET DOESNT SOLVE THE ISSUE BUT FOR ANOTHER FEW HOURS IF THAT. ON THE MOST EXTREME LEVEL, SOME PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THEIR PHONE JUST SHUTTING DOWN AND THE WHOLE ENTIRE ROM REBOOTS ITSELF THUS FORMATTING YOUR PHONE, ERASING ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS, PROGRAMS, ETC.
Well please dont blame or consider the rom developer's anymore if you ever thought it was the Rom's fault, or even the pagepool...
But after all is said and done, my phone just lost EVERYTHING and reset itself, and I had well over 1700 messages that i really needed that had alot of important information in them! After calling HTC tech support, and even going to my MSDN buddies, i didnt find anything or any help that i didnt already know... So when i broke down and finally called T-Mobile Billing to see if they could recover in any way my messages from a server... and of course the representative said its not possible.... BUT THEN SHE SAID SOMETHING THATCOMPLETELY ANSWERS AND SOLVES THE PROBLEM OF THAT NEVER HAPPENING AGAIN!!!
For those of us who send and receive LOTS of text messages daily, weekly, monthly..... That is the problem with why our phones begin to bog down, and eventually cause us hair loss and mood changes... LOL... Depending on the model of your phone, and how much Ram it carries with it, the phones are built to AUTOMATICALLY RESET THEMSELVES, as a last resort when it begins to get overloaded with text messages... especially threaded sms, and mms... but the first symptoms of overload is gradual slowdown of how quick your phone either switches to another app, or rotates the screen, or even
keyboard response time... 75% of this is caused by your phone having too many messages stored on it! There's really nothing you can do to remedy this other than deleting half or more of your text messages when u notice this happening, or obtaining some kind of regular pc program which will allow you to sync and download all your messages to your PC and thus allowing u to delete them all from your phone, and free up the excess memory... Now I dont have any knowledge of such a program and i would really LOVE some suggestions if someone knows of such an application... But my point was to address and hopefully solve this ongoing question!...
Now the credits.... Her name is - Tonya P. - and she is now with T-Mobile Billing... but look for her to soon join us, because we talked for over an hour, and she definitely knows ALOT about HTC phones that some of us may benefit from! She used to specialize in HTC phones and was assigned at T-Mobile as a support tech for them...
OK hopefully this post will help some of you...

Shortened.. but it must be explained in detail to address all the different problems which occur do to this feature...
and you can dispute it all you want fellows, but i have 10 friends who volunteered to help me test this by putting our
unlimited text messaging to the wall... Using mass SMS software, they were able to send me 1500 text messages to my HTC
8925 and that was the starting point for the phone just doing its own soft reset / for non responsiveness!....
At 1791 messages the phone shut down, and all of my customizations/contacts/programs/messages disappeared!! ... The
phone dropped to Athine OS Rom which was flashed before we started the test. But it was really a NAKED copy, which i
DID NOT flash to the phone.... and also i noticed that because of the HARD SPL... it was unable to fully format the phone so instead it just erased all my PERSONAL DATA / CUSTOMIZATIONS ... and the memory tab under settings said 116mb used ... but this has been tested and confirmed... I have no reason to make up a situation that will keep you from texting your heart out... I simply am trying to save some of you the EXTREME HASSLE that i am going through now, because i no longer have any of the information that was saved in my sms messages, and so i am about to lose $15,000 ... all because HTC never explained, or even warned that such a thing could happen!
So if its too long for you dont read it!... Im sure alot of people will thank me for going into so much detail so they could pinpoint exactly which scenario is/has occurred with their phone and can maybe prevent the disaster!

you lost me.
keep it short and sweet
Simple and short...
Delete you old text messages. The allegedly bog your phone down. I say allegedly as mine has over 1000 on there all threaded and it is still a zippy as the day I flashed it.

Yep, as above it appears (in short) that the poster is suggesting that text messages (and I guess MMS/email too) will start to fill up your storage memory, once the memory is full it may cause your Kaiser to hard reset itself.
...That sounds pretty scary. The worst I've ever had is a popup warning me that 'Storage Memory is Critically Low' - If I take action and clear out old messages/email it speeds up a bit, if I ignore it, applications freeze and the handset is unresponsive until soft-reset.
...Worth bearing a potential autonomous hard-reset in mind just in case though I guess...
Regards,
Rob.
I was using my phone a few hours ago (adding an icon from the application drawer to the home screen if that will help with solving the problem) when suddenly, the phone reset itself as though I had done a wipe from the recovery console. I had to sign back into Google and re-sync my contacts and calendar. All my settings were back to defaults. My home screen icons disappeared and changed to the default icons (browser, contacts, dialer, market, messaging, maps) as did the wallpaper. All my SMS messages were gone. Basically, it as was as though I had wiped and flashed the ROM for the first time.
However, and this is the weird part. Not only were all my apps still there but they were still installed. All the settings were lost but they were still there. I am not concerned with the restoration of my settings or anything like that. I've got that all covered with backups. My big question is why did it happen? Has anyone experienced or heard of this phantom reset? My ROM details are in my sig but just in case that changes and someone visits this post later, it will make more sense to them if I list it in the post itself.
Cyanogen 3.6.8.1 w/Recovery Menu v1.4. Radio v2.22.19.26i. A2SD on 550MB ext2 partition. Compcache enabled/24MB.

Well, I can tell you why your apps survived, because you have them on sd card so that's not weird, you can wipe all you want and they will survive.
I would say this is a glitch, don't worry about it unless it happens again.

Yes, the apps on sd being the reason I didn't lose them makes sense. I had a different problem losing apps on the sd when I wiped but that was a mistakes in the way I was slinking and it was also on JF1.51 (a2sd is very unstable on that ROM). Anyway, I'm seriously hoping it was just a one time glitch because my setup is voodoo smooth otherwise. I finally got my G1 running perfectly and I'd hate to think something was wrong. Either way, Nandroid is always an option.
Phantom Reset Not a Glitch. Happened Again!
OK. So it happened again. The phantom reset that I described in the first post happened to me again. It's pretty annoying to have to perform Nadroid restores all the time. Anyone have any real thoughts other than telling me it was a fluke?
Possible Answer
I am pretty certain that this happened right after I used Backup for Root Users. I have my identical setup on my father's G1 and this has never happened. He has told me in the past that he does not use that app. I don't want to instantly blame the app but I want to provide as much info as possible. Cyan's ROMs are too good for this to be an issue.

The dev has reported that it has issues (if you can replicate the errors, send him a logcat)
hes on the forums on this site
SOLVED
Thanks a lot. I will try and write-up (on dev's site) of what I was doing when it happened. It happened to me twice so I don't think I will use it again (at least until it's fixed). I am a backup freak so I like to use multiple apps but nandroid seems to cover it all. I will stick with what seems to work (and work well) for now.
On a side note, Cyan's latest looks too juicy not to try out. Going to upgrade now.
I have searched on several different keywords and I cannot seem to find a similar issue mentioned anywhere...
My problem is with almost every rom out there. However, I will speak directly about Cyanogen 4.0.4 because it is the ROM that I am currently using.
I installed 4.0.4 the day it came out. I did a wipe and installed it. The ROM worked great for about 2 or 3 weeks. However, now it has slowed down considerably. For the past week, whenever I get a call, if I do not pick it up on the first ring, the phone is so slow that it cannot receive the call. Every operation on the phone takes a long time.
If I wipe the phone and redo the 4.0.4 update.zip, the phone speeds back up. Even though I am using the same set of apps...
So, I assume there is some app cache or some other thing that is getting stuffed up and needs to be cleaned out periodically. However, I have deleted all the caches that I can think of and it does not seem to make a difference. I do not keep SMSs, GMail is always empty, I maintain my Exchange mailbox under a Meg all of the time...
Any idea on what cache, or something else that I might be missing?
Or a relevant set of search terms, or a link to an existing fix?
Thanks

So just to confirm you did a rm -rf /system/sd/dalvic-cache/* then reboot ?
If not try that
I have not tried that. I did do a wipe last night, so I am back to snappy again. In a couple of weeks I will try erasing the dalvik-cache and reboot per your suggestion. Thanks
Kind of related... What app do you use to keep your various apps killed off? Right now I am using TaskPanel. However I would be interested in opinions on other apps.
So here is a run down of maintenance that I have so far:
Clear the dalvik-cache - rm -rf /system/sd/dalvic-cache/*
Clear all of the app caches.
Kill all non-important tasks on a regular basis
Delete all SMS messages
Delete all mail
Did I miss anything? Thanks for helping.
Hello all. I made this topic because my one friend and I have had a strange messaging problem the last couple of days.
Now, we both have rooted G1's and flashed Micro Hero for the Hard SPL on our phones. We've been using this ROM for about a month without any flaws for the whole time, but now our messaging keeps acting up. What keeps happening is when we go into our messaging app, the messages we send all get sent to the bottom, and the messages received from others all get sent to the top. That, and all the time stamps don't usually have times but just say "Yesterday". The fix I used that worked was re-flashing the ROM, but for all of those who flash ROMs a lot, you probably know how much of a pain it is to set up your phone again after re-flashing. There has to be some other alternative to this. And yes, I've tried using different messaging up but it did the same thing.
So has anyone else had this problem, or it it possibly T-Mobile and not us? Or could it possibly be that we have too many messages at once? I only had about 140 messages when this started happening, and than about 20 the second time it happened, so I really doubt it's that. I just don't see why it would start happening now all of a sudden and not right away.
It sounds like a problem on T-Mobile's and time-stamping the messages causing things to go to weird locations because they are trying to sort the messages by time. But if you can fix it by reflashing, then would download Backup for Root Users and use that everytime you need to re-flash. Good luck.

Thanks, and I'll try that as I'm downloading Backup for Root Users now. I just hope I don't I find a fix besides re-flashing though because I'm having to re-flash once a day at this point. It's really annoying.
Hello chaps,
I just installed cognition 3.04 from stock, and now I'm a bit frustrated because everything works EXCEPT when it tries to recieve calls. I did a little putzing around and found this person with the same problem, but it didn't help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918458 I tried getting the phone.apk from this thread here, but it will not install. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10685612&postcount=861
Unfortunately, if I can't recieve calls, this rom is useless to me. It's a phone, after all. anybody have a fix for this that doesn't involve the words "master reset"? I don't care if I have to flash back to stock but I will not master reset. 32 gigs of music takes too damn long to sync haha, plus I don't want to have to reset all my tones/settings. I would like to stay on froyo, I like my flash player, working skype, and little pointer that makes it easier to pick a spot in text. (oh, and the whole "better ui" thing is great too)
I'm open to other roms, kernels, whatever as long as I can get everything to work, and not have to master reset

Depends on your knowledge level but it sounds like a reflash is in your future. Just flash to stock and reflash the ROM. if the problem persists, try another ROM. There are plenty to choose from. Please move this to QA though
You know Adam,
What amazes me is how you continuously help to contribute to the XDA community with your great FF, Phoenix and SN in addition to answering questions about other roms too.
We need more guys like you!
Looking forward to SN!

I did restore my apps with titanium, could that have caused the issue?

This was my issue too...I ended up going through all the steps to flash back to stock and then to cog 3.04 again. After that I cleared all the "caches" and did a master clear.
All of that may be a little superfluous but when I did my restore I did as little as I could because my suspicion was that the full back up from the stock rom was copying over some phone settings. So I picked through the restore items and only left on the apps and contacts left everything else off.
Sure could have if you reinstalled it with system data.

Sent from my SGH-I896 using XDA App
Yes that can definnately cause a problem
You are probably replacing the phone 2.2 with the version of your older ROM. The problem will show it self right after you reboot after restoring with TB.
Also what are you doing flooding the main forum. Either QA or post right in the Cognition thread.
A good rule of thumb for restoring things with Titanium Backup: If the name of the app is RED don't restore it. Only restore things that are GREEN or WHITE
Is your music only on your external sd card? If so, take your external out and master clear. Will only wipe your internal. If it is on your internal as well then ignore this lol.
Sent from my Captivate running Cezar's Continuum v.2.1 with SuckerPunch kernel.
I had this same problem. Phone would ring, and all I had was caller ID, but could not answer the phone. Turns out my Answering Mode was disabled. I don't know if the first flash to the ROM reset this or what, but once I reset to enable, I had no problems. I have since re-flashed ROMS and using Titanium Backup has restored my settings and have had no problems.
I have the same problem in mi Captivate. The phone.apk application hang up when I do OUTGOING calls.
For test, I unninstall the phone.apk and the SO always show an hangup for phone.apk and for messaging.apk applications. I have a Backup after that, and I restore it, but occurrs the same problema in outgoing calls. I didn't restore this application, but I didn't do a Master Clear. I try and post my result.
Otherwise, I have to rollover to Stock ROM.
