[NOOB ?] Wondering where to start :) - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development

I might have posted this in the wrong section...but here goes.
I'm getting my TP2 tomorrow, and I know that the first thing that I'm going to have to do is install a custom ROM, as Stock always sucks I'm just a little taken as to what I ought to start with, and what benefits there are to specific Dev's ROM's. I haven't had a WinMo phone in ~4 years, so I'm sure I'll have to relearn quite a bit. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be welcome!
Thanks!

DO we need a SUBforum "Wing Mobile 6"

Hi there,
do we need a subforum for Wingusers only??
If so i would ask to create a new subforum...
Please vote for 1 week after that time I will delete this thread again....
Thanks
Daniel
it would be nice to have a area for wing specific threads, gets kinda confusing for what works with the wing and what doesnt
I remember as a newb it took me quite a while before I figured out that herald=atlas=wing and a subforum I think would help everybody out.
yess. took me so long to figure out its the same phone lol..
dam temobile and there renaming
I'd like to see a tmobile wing specific sub-forum as well.
Great idea. Being a newbie, it took me a while to get piece everything together....When I started out, I was on the other Wing forum and it took a while for me to figure out the whole Herald/P4350 thing...
pffft. No. There's not that much Wing-specific WM6 content here. It would be a waste and it would also look really empty...

I think that it would be helpful for new folks getting started.
I voted yes, but since david made the cab to fix keyboard for wing users Im not gonna cook wing specific roms. And all my roms will be posted in Herald wm6
I have voted no. My reasoning is that the most notable difference between the two devices are minimal (the keyboard mapping) which has basically been resolved by David Duprat. Although it may be a bit more organized, I think it would be a waste since the majority of the questions are not device specific. I would hate to have to jump between forums looking for an answer that could apply to all herald like devices.
But hell I'm flexible.

Ditto.......we've obviously all found it, why do we need a new forum with duplicate info?
I think if any we should ad another section under Herald (and possibly for other devices as well) that is dedicated to new roms and kitchens. This would clean up the existing forums quite a bit.

Agreed. There's no real reason. It's just going to slow down the production of new ideas since they'll be divided between two camps. It's the same device minus the keyboard driver.

The more I think about it, the more I want to take my vote back. Add one more to no and subtract from yes.
I voted Yes, just for the sake of clarity, and organized structure.
And it spares us many questions like : ''Will this work on my Wing/Herald?" wich,
even with David Duprat's solution wil be asked several times more.
Although the Herald Mobile 6 forum is already full of mixed stuff, it doesn't really matter that much.
still I think it's better

It works on both. The keyboard might not match, though...
But if they don't read the heading or the post that talks about it being a herald or wing item, why would they read the forum name? j/k
Personally, I think it would be ridiculous to open a new forum... Sure, it might make things "more organized" ... but its also going to be a pain in the ass... and besides the ROM, what other DEVICE SPECIFIC questions arise? NONE what so ever.
So you're going to split everyone and basically the only thing that's going to be happening in the new forum is a topic for Ivan's roms and a topic for ttran's roms...
I say keep it together, it makes more sense. I don't want to have to jump around yet another forum when the devices are the same, except for the keyboard problem, which has a solution now.
the only pro for me is - that noobs can find things more easyly.....
and at the moment 75% say yes (nearly 50 votes)
take it from a noob, it took me close to 2 weeks b4 i learned the herald was the wing p3 whatever it is... lol
im still totaly confused by all this
maybe instead of a new form just add WING to the title page
"Also known as: HTC P4350" is what it says
make it say
"Also known as: HTC P4350 / T-Mobile Wing"
maybe a well layed out sticky thred,
explaining the differances of each model of this phone
i run a few forusm myself and keeping things streamlined is a pain.
but this is a tricky one...
I agree with nyitalian718. Just rename the forum to Herald/Wing.
We'll be the only forum to have a non-HTC codename. hehe
I'm going with nyitalian718 and ivanmmj's opinion of adding all the known names of the Herald/Wing to the list just like in any other sub-forum.
It's not too much ask if a noob has to read some pages/stickies. All of us started like this and gain their knowledge.
At the end every major topic/problem has been dicussed at least once.
And the last thing I would recommend a new PDA owner is to void the warranty by flashing his device.
He should first get familiar with his PDA and then read the infos on this forum.
Papamopps and the core members of the Herald/Wing community did a great job on writing guides and tutorials on...let's say on everything

We Need A Rom Critic!

I just can't keep up anymore, there seems to be a bajillion roms and new ones keep getting updated everyday.
why can't we make the rom selection process a little more simple first off with a poll
Which rom are you using?
I would also love for people to rate their roms on a simple scale, this is just an idea
stability: 1-10
Versatility: 1-10
Free Memory: MB
Innovation: 1-10
Worth the upgrade: 1-10
Swiftblade's ROM is already at v5.0/Lite.
I'm using Swiftblade v5.0 Lite and I vote for it 2 hands up!
stability: 9
Versatility: 9
Free Memory: Storage 90MB++, RAM 55MB++
Innovation: 5 (cos its lite therefore not much innovative programs)
Worth the upgrade: 10
1. wrong forum! we do not make polls in "diamond ROM development". this is for..........give you 3 guesses......yes, you guessed... ROM development.
2. the forum is full with this kind of useless threads. why useless? because this is a subjective matter. one looks for speed, other looks for memory and another is looking for the graphics. what is good for me can be terrible wrong for you....clear?
3. i searched and find for you (you didn't bother to search) only a few of the threads that tried to determine which is better:

4. i know that if this thread is going to continue (hope not) it is going to become a very long and useless one. what you'll get in the end? a "chat" thread and a poll about the most used ROM for diamond....not the best.
5. if you want to know something about ROMs go and search the benchmark thread. this is the right way to determine which one is the best ROM for you.

now who said i am not helping the noobs??!!!

someone please kill this thread, another pointless poll.
?
I understand your frustrations of noobs taking over your elite site but I still feel this is useful and insightful
all the posts you showed before showed old rom's, now with such a variety out there I wanted to know how the diversity has expanded. Not to show which rom is the best but instead to survey what is out there. If you don't like this thread, just take the poll and ignore it. However when it comes to polls, in the end it's whatever you make of them.
Pointless
Another pointless reply from Kukuriku.
adilkhan1214: Forget about Kukuriku, he has this problem with noob's asking questions! He forgets that when he started this kind of thing he would have asked exactly the same sort of questions.
Like the idea, hope other people take the poll as it will help out new comers quite a bit to see what everyone is using.
Keep asking the questions as there are plenty of helpful people on here, but you will come across a minority that think they own this forum and really have nothing helpful to say and will try and slam you at every oppurtunity.
By the way, I am using the SwiftBL WWE Diamond v5.0. Very smooth and stable ROM, really recommend it.

The point is, just like what Kukuriku said, it's a subjective matter. There is no best, worse or somewhere in between ROM. It's for a major part all about look and feel, there is nothing more subjective than that. Why don't you try most of the roms? It's nice to do and you will quickly find out which rom will be the one for you

I know it is subjective, and I am not going to argue over what you may think my intentions are.
It is indeed to find out what people are using and why they use it, diversity is there and I'm open to finding out where the majority of people flock to in their rom choice.
It's like me trying to find out how many Native American Indians are in Nevada and then people yelling at me and telling me to find out more about Native Americans first.
They don't add up
I've flashed my phone probably four time in the last month....
my personal subjective opinion: they don't make that big of a difference
but it's irrelevant, currently I'm trying out Dutty's 1.5 and from this poll it seems that one ROM I didn't yet try is one that a lot of people have so now I know where to head next.
I support this poll too. It's gives a quick pointer to what roms ppl are using. I find it useful in deciding what rom to try next. right now, I'm on bElite 0.97, but might take a swing at SwiftBL while I'm waiting for bElite 1.0
thanks

instead i took the time to post links to similar threads and tried in my (special) way to help you. and you still are complaining, you don't get it. ok......
I like the poll. A rom that is popular and have many votes is probably not bad.
When had a Trinity I used to check the poll to see which rom most people used, and flash that.
To be honest. At the moment i don't see the advantage of using one the custom ROMS.
The new 1.93.xx official ROM works great for me.
I do appreciate all the work the developers are putting in their ROM, and i respect them for that! It's always nice to have options
So, i voted "official ROM"

You need a ROM critic?
Really?
You don't seriously say you need a ROM critic.
If you take the time and bother to search and to go through each custom ROM's thread, you'll find that the first couple of posts are introducing the ROM and the other hundreds of posts are... guess what... wait for it... FEEDBACK on the ROM after people have TRIED it. YES, you are advised to try the ROM and formulate your own opinion instead of posting useless threads that have been posted before. We all look for different things and it's downright impossible for anyone to tell you what the "best" ROM is. Someone might vote for ROM X because it's fast, another one might vote for ROM X because it's got lots of free space and a third person might vote for ROM X because it's in a certain language. THen you go, download ROM X because "everyone says it's good" but you hate it because you need a ROM that doesn't have a certain app you need. See my point?

Your point is what? You want to help every poor soul not installing the wrong rom for their needs? How do you know what ppl want? Why should anyone decide for me what rom I want to flash, or even decide how I can reach my conclusion to why I should flash it.
I have read many of the ROM threads, I still flashed TLR over bElite .95 and found out it wasn't right for me. This poll doesn't tell you which rom is best, it tells you how many ppl are using the different roms. You can then make a decision to look up the rom you find interesting, and flash it if you want. E.g. I'm using bElite .97, I see there's alot of ppl using SwiftBL...hmmm, maybe I should try it out and see if I like it. I go to the SwiftBL thread, read and make a decision. This poll gives a pointer, so I don't need to study every single rom thread to find a popular rom. I still can, but now I have a choice.
Seing how many has voted, it seems that some ppl actually thinks it's a good thing.

noobish question re ROM's

First off...hello to all! Great site!
New with the Tilt and have been searching and reading like endless hours! I've tried searching, various sites, etc. Tons of info but most appear pretty technical (sorry..non-techie!)...and I have some probably tired nooby q's for you seasoned xda gods. I have done a few basic mods like adding the HTC home, customizer; etc. I would like to try my hand at these ROM's I keep hearing about...but hesitant in screwing my new phone up.
1) What is a decent tried and true ROM...meaning enough flashy gizmo programs, etc to keep me busy without killing my new phone. Preferbably with a version of voice command that works via my Plantronics Discovery BT earpiece.
2) Ok..don't flame me...how do I "flash" the ROM? Unless I missed something..I found like one YouTube vid of some guy demonstrating it and I still don't get it. Layman terms?
I just want to mod it one final time and that's it for me as I'm sure others here mod theirs on a daily basis as it seems.
Any help is greatly appreciated...and patience with a nooby!
Thanks.
Welcome to the board, lots of information here, enough to make your head spin.
All of the ROM cooks on here do great work, if you're looking for bells and whistles you might want to look into one with Manilla cooked into it, or just load the CAB and use it on your existing ROM.
As for help flashing a upgraded ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895. This is where I started, read the entire thread and all of the threads it mentions.

Have fun with your new TILT, but remember something, ROM flashing is addicting.

To answer your Q's
1) Check around in the Kaiser ROM forums..the first couple of posts of each ROM thread typically decribes what it carries in terms of programs and other info inlcuding bug fix updates etc..plus loads of posts on user feedback on the ROM
2) If you are at the extreme end of being a non-techie then i suggest you dont play around with flashing or get a pal who is savvy to do it for you..you can read up on the subject in the wiki and then see if you are comfortable doing it on your own honestly its pretty well explained there and i dont think it can be made any simpler...
Cheers
Thanks fellas for the sound advice. I'm always willing to learn new things; but when you're less than tech savvy like myself (and I'm pretty sure there's a few like me on here!)...all this info on just this one phone alone can drive you insane! I'm not necessarialy looking for all the bells/whistles..just maybe a ROM that's more or less had it's bugs worked out. And there are just a ton of ROM's out there...most look great but I'm also thinking in the back of my mind that the more advanced ones out there might be a bit much for a 1st timer. I may need to find somebody locally to help in case I run into problems..but I'm determined to do as much as possible myself..knock on wood! Thanks for listening to my long winded posts!

Wing ROM Change...[Or how do I post useless questions!]

I want to try and load a new rom on my wing. Which one do you guys think the Wing can benefit from the most? One problem I have now is that the reception is horrible. That's the main reason why I want the change. I will be honest I have no idea what I'm doing. Is it the ROM I want to change or the radio version? Can someone point me on the right way? Thnx in advance!
its the radio that is messing up your reception.
Okay. Are there any tutorials I can use to change it? BTW The phone has ROM version 4.26.531.1 WWE and radio version 03.21.90. Can you suggest a radio to me? I have no idea what I should be looking for let alone how to accomplish this.
As far as there are NO turorials...you should NEVER change your ROM. It is not good for your device...you can brick it...and it looks ugly with custom colours...
hahahahahahahahahaha

I understand pappamops, because if you read a little bit you can answer your question by yourself. and i suggest you, as pappamops always did it, to read a lot in this forum before flashing. bricking your phone is much more easy than flashing it successfully. if you've read in this forum than you will see that your question(s) are yet answered.

How to cook your own rom, an initiative by moderators

Dear folks:
How many us are really looking for cooking our own rom. Information are scattered here and there and the process is not straight forward. It can be as simple as adding cabs and as complicated as perhaps changing hardware, porting roms to other devices, etc...
I think the reason why there is no tutorial for cooking the rom is because well it's difficult for one to develop that kind of tutorial, let alone his/her experience and best practices in various areas.
Ok so how to solve it? I suggest that all great cooking people out there, share to build that tutorial led by the moderator.
For example, one person could be in charge of explaining how to add CAB, another person in doing sys, another in porting, another in compiling, etc..
Clearly there will be multiple sections in that thread and it would be owesome and well organized. Even better, some topics can be jointly developed by more then one person sharing the experience and the best tricks and tips between them.
Somebody has to start this initiative, at least in defining the blocks, who is going to take the first shot and entice others to cooperate?
Samer.
sounds like a good idea i'd definitely like to know!!! im always looking for ways to build up my skills.
There's plenty of tutorials floating around... But if you want one done JUST for the TP2, I can help with that...
Im down...if not make my own, maybe help someone else. I personally think there are too many to choose from, and there needs to be a streamlined process to ensure that the ones that work, continue to get the support to make them better.
As NRG said, there are already a lot of threads and tutorials. Making a ROM is not just a Rhodium thing, it is very generic to start. Then making it Rhodium compliant might take some extra work. In any case, I am also looking to start my own kitchen so any efforts in this direction are apprciated.
I would greatly appreciate this. I am currently trying to cook my own ROM. I got the Visual Kitchen, dumped the HTC WWE 6.5 ROM and downloaded the 23518 rollup from Da_G.
I used Dump Sorter to sort the rollup and put it in the SYS folder. I moved the MSXIPKernel into ROM\Shared\23518. I selected 23518 for XIP and SYS build and left ETX at 21854. The ROM won't build. I try to make it but the file in RHODIUM_Release is only 8MB.
In the build log it says
"Executing: platformrebuilder.exe.....
platformrebuilder.exe Executed successfull!!!"
Platformrebuilder does not do anything where as if I left everything at 21854 there is a LOT of stuff that platformrebuilder.exe does.
Also in ROM\Shared\21854 there is a file xip.bin that I don't have in 23518.
Help cooking sense2.5
My problem is when trying to cook Leo sense2.5(EXT package). ( I could produce sense2.1 without any problem) . BUT ran into issues like: (see photo) or if the ROM is complete. I can't get past the installation screen, just hung there and not giving me the Today Screen. So any help would be greatly appreciative.
ps.. I did check Real WM 6.5, but ROM still won't boot.

Well first of all, it's an honor to see a great person like yourself answering my post, so my warm regards for your kindness.
Yes, I am interested obviously in TP2, although from the moment I got my hands on it, I never tried anything but EnergyRom (do you know who does them?) but it's just that I wish I can combine the latest official WM6.5 with arabic keyboard and Sense 2.5 and perhaps some cool stuff.
Indeed there are plenty of tutorials out there but maybe they are not clear enough to me, or maybe I didnt' search very well or maybe I dont know how and where to start. so yes ur input are highly welcome just like your presence.

I'd love to see one! Not that I'm not grateful to the cooks for their ROMs, I'd like to know how it's done and maybe add a few programs of my own to a ROM.
Oh, and I think it'd be best to start right at the beginning so that everyone is at the same level eventually.
Thanks!
I started cockin roms a couple years ago and said the exact same thing how the information is scattered.. i'm in, just let me know what you need and i'll help with what i can.
I also see some tutorials in many sub-forums, but having to look at 4 different pages just to do one step in cooking a ROM is a little troublesome and confusing. So here's what I think should happen:
I think there should be a sticky thread that has clear steps (a guide) on how to cook ROMs.
Then there should also be a sticky thread that has all kitchens from chefs that want to release them. (Similar to the Radio Collection Thread.)
That would help a lot of people! I want to cook ROMs when I have the time (over summer) and if (hopefully when) this happens, it would be easier for many people like me to cook ROMs.
BesFen made a solid tutorial for using Visual kitchen in the Opal forum, and I helped with that one. I think this is an excellent idea and I'd love to help with it in whatever capacity I can.

edit: Just read the poll results. Whoever said no is obviously not XDA material.
i dont mind helping with this
Thanks for starting this thread.. Been using excellent ROMs from NRGZ & b16b, but want to do my own thing for my Rhodium. Hopefully, this will get me to appreciate the efforts of these 2 fine cooks and use the facilities provided by XDA better..
I've been trying to wrap my head around the info provided by Da_G in this super thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544445
It is taking a while for a newbie like me..
When I had my XV6800(AKA Titan) after a while of modding I started cooking my own roms. I usually removed the garbage I would never use to shrink the Rom size. I then left for a BB in Nov. 2008. Well my senses have come around and I will be back to WinMo with a TP2 on Wed. So I would like to see a kitchen to cooking rom Tutorial assuming it is different. I know that of course CDMA vs GSM will be with because of the carrier CAB. This go around I am leaving VZW to T-Mobile.
So, what's happened with this and this thread? Has it all turned out to be a p**s take?
I would love to see a cohesive tutorial on how to cook a ROM.
I've poked around in the kitchen threads but have gotten kind of lost and overwhelmed. It seems like information is so scattered around.
I've been looking for a project to do for awhile and have thought that ROM cooking might be kinda fun. Initially, I'd just like to make something with the features I want but who knows where it might go. I think I've tried every TP2 ROM on XDA-Developers now and, while I've found some excellent ones, nothing that quite screams "this is EXACTLY what I want".
So...yeah...a good "how-to" would be excellent and I'd be forever grateful.
FWIW, I'd be happy to do some trade-work in exchange for this. I've got a pretty decent technical skill set...just not one involving ROM cooking.
Same here.. I'm stuck on getting a build to use.. Looking for a good NAM build : Tilt2 stock or something for Tilt2 will be a good start..
My first attempt is with the Eruvius Visual kitchen. I think I got all the required files. There were multiple download links in the original thread. I'm guessing that I get the older version and replace the latest kitchen .exe on top.
I'd love to try to cook my own ROM. I agree that the information seems sparse and kinda scattered. My cursory browsing very much gives the vibe that information for Touch Pro 2 ROM Development has an unspoken understanding that you've made ROMs before. Not me.
I'd love a simple step-by-step tutorial (for rhodium), cause I'd like to build a simple ROM based on the latest 5.5.3/5, without manila...
