Its not like reverse vnc, its like, uh, vnc.
This website has all the stuff you need to get a vnc server running on your phone:
http://code.google.com/p/android-vnc/
Note: If you just run the fbvncserver, you can get a vnc server in VIEW ONLY mode. To get full interactive VNC, you need to run a kernel with their patch applied -- do not try to boot off their patched kernel, it is for emulator only. If you want to use their kernel patch, you must checkout the source code -- it comes with the patch file. Apply it to the applicable kernel source and boot off that.
I was looking for the same thing for my EVO. I found an app in the Market called "droid VNC Server" by Jose Pereira that allows you to remotely control your Android phone from a PC wirelessly. I tried it over WiFi and it worked flawlessly for me!
Here's a link to it on Market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.onaips.vnc&feature=search_result
(Edit: Sorry, didn't realize this thread was from 2009 until after I hit submit. It was the top Google result for my search for a solution.)
thanks for the info..
it really helps...
some moderator like to lock old thread...if we reply to it..
but it actually helps sometimes..

Anyway to do this or something like this without any internet what so ever? I have no internet and would like to connect phone via USB. Then see screen on computer be able to use Mouse for touch and keyboard to type. Is it possible? Everything I see fails to mention you need to connect to internet to use it either by having DSL cable or tethering for you WiFi data. No internet options for me.

Pretty cool. Works with my G1 and Cyanogen 4.1.99. Try it out.
http://rapidshare.com/files/305341350/PersonalPortal.apk
Recently some of the system dumps from the upcoming Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid hit the Developer community, and they have been trying to piece the puzzle together of what the Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid is all about. We got our hands on a new app which looks like it will be front and center when the device finally hits the shelves, Motorola Phone Portal.
Those that remember using the Motorola Phone Tools app to hack their Motorola’s back in the day (I’m getting all “Ahmad – Back in the Day” about my v600, v810, and RAZR) will instantly recognize this little gem, but it’s been updated for Android and provides some pretty cool functionality. Basically, Motorola Phone Tools (MPP) serves as an all-in-one phone manager that allows users to easily view, edit, create, delete, and play their contacts, ringtones, photos, wallpaper, and media. The key difference now is, the app is web-based and you log into your phone from directly from your browser! No installing “modems” and drivers on your Windows machine (painful), just fire up the app and press the “Connect with Wi-Fi button. When you press the button, the app prompts you to either turn on Wi-Fi, or connect over USB. For this experiment, I chose Wi-Fi.
MPP lets you add/edit/delete/browse your contacts, photos, bookmarks, browser history, and media in an easy-to-use interface. Playing media directly from the device in the browser worked very well, and the picture viewer/slideshow feature is pretty damn cool. So with MPP you’ll be able to play/show-off your media anywhere from any browser. If Moto adds a Social/Sharing aspect to this, they will have a winner on their hands.
So there you have it kids, a little taste of what’s to come with the Sholes/Tao/Droid. The original Moto Phone Tools was a pretty handy app (when it worked), and the new MPP looks to be just as functional, if not more so. I am sure it will help a lot of users manage their contacts/media/content when it gets released, and the ability to do slideshows and play media from your device directly from your browser is pretty slick. I hope Moto adds more features and functionality to it as time goes on, but this seems like a sign of good things to come. Grab the .apk file below and play away!

Doesn't work on my hero
It asks to activate wi-fi even if it is already active. Tried to start-stop wifi before and after i opened the application. any guess?
Thank you!!
Ok, I figured how to make it working, the phone must be connected to a network to be used, but I though it creates an ad-hoc wi-fi connection to work with.
BTW great app!
This thing is great. I wonder why more people aren't interested in this....
Sounds cool, I'm going to test this out later
pretty slick...
Nice that you can mange contacts and view the contents of your sdcard etc. Similar to AFile and others but a bit more "moto". Could be neat! I imagine that the majority of users would never set up a secure login though, could be fun to sit in a crowded bar and scan for active devices running this on port 8080. Imagine the havoc that could wreak!

does this connect via USB or only wifi?
What does this do exactly? I have to connect to my wifi network and make sure the computer is connected and then what?
Is there a specific process to join the phone and the comp together?
I tried using a remote desktop client but didn't figure out how to get it working, is this the same?

Does this differ much from printershare?
IMHO it is completely different. I was able to get this working on my gtab running VEGAn in about 5 minutes, and it allows me to print to any printer that is connected to any computer that i have access to, regardless of how that printer is connected to that computer.
Oh yeah...it is free too

Printershare also connect to any printer attached to my computer as well, the free part is interesting since printershare is free for a certain amount of pages and all. guess ill give it a shot. thanks for the info.
I just used Google Cloud Print on my Samsung Captivate and hope to check it out on my new GTab tonight! Thanks for the info! I had not yet heard about it. It will be nice when Google updates some of their Apps (such as the Gmail App and the stock browser) to support Cloud Print!
good cloud print is awesome much better than paying for printer share after all the free pages it gives you to print which isnt much, hope more sites/pages will be supported thanks for the advice.
So have you guys got it to work from your G-tab ok? I always have problems in the stock browser with G-mail.

yes, cloud print beta
I installed it, went thru the login process, sent a test page from the app. ... and... Nothing.
EDIT: I rebooted my GTab, still no go. But I can't get my Hero to print either. Weird.
EDIT #2: I went to manage my printers and see a job under the "Active Print Jobs", but nothing in the Completed area and nothing in my tray.

Yes. Everything is on, registered, etc. I think the issue lies within the PC. It's 64bit (I hate x64) and it appears I can't load the Microsoft XML paper specification pack that is required (LINK, under "Why is my document not printing?").

hey. i've been looking for an app that acts as a server for the android display. basically you'd start it, connect via a web browser/vnc/whatever, and have access to the device itself, then be able to control via the mouse.
i found a few apps that allow you to remotely manage/access files and apps on the phone, but not one that actually puts the phone display in your pc.
ideas?
thanks!

Look up, they're linked a couple posts above yours.
Wanna turn your Screen off while watching videos over HDMI?
Or need a watchful Xoom but don´t want the screen to be on all the time?
Here´s the app you need!
Description:
The App adds the posibility to turn off the lcd backlight to your xoom. Its nothing less then a shutdown-button for your display backlight.
The app toggles your lcd backlight to zero and back, said doesn´t just overlay your screen with black, like the other apps inside the market.
it turns off your screen light completly , but the screen stays responsible and the devices stays awake.
Use it instead of locking your xoom, if you need your device itself to be active but dont need the display to be on, e.g. while you´re watching videos over hdmi, use your xoom as a vnc server or something like that.

Use this awesome little App with some "starter app" of your choice.
For example, use the Shaking Shortcurt App, register ToggleScreenXoom.apk and you could turn your screen on/off with just shaking your device.
(tested on xoom [email protected] but should work on every rooted xoom)
Thanks to [email protected] for his work on this.

"Basically" the same as the old method, right. Just in one app without the need of configuration and with more flexibility to be launched by other apps.
Maybe you´ll try "Shaking Shortcurt". A nice app that lets you launch two other apps by shaking your xoom.
Yeah, think I'll try that instead of SwipePad. Since Swipepad rely's on the borders of the screen and Cornerstone alters the borders, I'm guessing that's the issue. Maybe the Shaking app won't have that issue.
Thanks again for the clarification, and the thread. I really can't believe this thread hasn't blown up!

First post is edited to get it straight.
Does this only work on the xoom? I have an acer 510 and I want something like this. It sounds like this gets launched in conjunction with whatever app you launch. I'd rather that while on hdmi the tablet display is off entirely. Or maybe this does that as well.
So is this specific to the xoom?

According to the readme provided in the zip file this application seems to be specific for the Xoom, or at least a few tegra 2 tablets.
That's disappointing. Why would manufacturer's assume that a user wants the display to stay on while using hdmi?! How about a sane default like leave hdmi output on and turn off tablet display after the normal inactivity duration. But allow a keyboard/mouse not to be recognized as tablet activity.
Could this be modified to work with more devices? Or say newer tegra 3 devices if it's chipset specific. But really, ics should have some application layer to control things like hdmi res, screen active etc...
Nice! Works in AOKP
First of all, this is a great app, and it works well in AOKP (build 37).
To trigger the app, I set my "home" softkey on my xoom (in Rom Control) to trigger the app when the key is held. Even though you can't see the softkeys when on hdmi, after a while, its exact location is easy to recall.
It is really convenient. Thanks for the much needed addition to a great device.
