I've heard alot of grumbling in regards to kinks in the Hero's hardware, in regards to battery life, sms problems, memory leaks, etc.
I havent had any of those problems in my Hero and I was wondering if I have a problem free Hero, or it's just not a huge deal to me.
I have the 1.5 firmware
Kernel Version is 2.6-27-533ce29d
build number is 1.29.651.1 CL69164 release-keys
software: 1.29.651.1
hardware: 0002
I live in the US and it is branded "with Google" on the back.
either way, I'm looking forward to the Eclair update soon.
thanks, I'm a total noob to this phone and Android
I believe you have the same phone as everyone else. I have the same specs you have, but I think the 1.29 have the battery fix, but don't quote me. I had the "with out google" backplate on my first phone, but that fubar'ed on me.
"With Google" has been confirmed to be strictly cosmetic. The battery issues are caused by a bug in the Sprint Hero's messaging app; current workaround is to use Handcent or ChompSMS instead and turn off notifications for the built-in Messaging app.
I have something different. No with google. No Voice control thing on google search..
Build Number is: 1.22.651.1 146733 CL62456
Software Version: 1.22.651.1
I had this phone before release... and of course Sprint has no idea how to update.

If you are interested in updating to the 1.29.651.1 there is a Sprint HTC Hero RUU that can be downloaded here RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release.exe

When trying to download onto my phone from the Market, I get an error message 'Package file was not signed correctly.'
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.5 on my Rogers Magic 32A.
Doesn't work for me in denmark
I think this is only US.
It's been released for the Market on all devices, but I think it has something to do with our devices using test-keys and not release-keys...
Thoughts?
Same problem in Belgium with 32A using CyanogenMod 4.2.5 with Kernel 2.6.29bfs.
Very sad
working fantastic on my MT3G running Dwang 1.13. Didn't get an 'update available' notification, but installing it from the market worked flawlessly. I gotta say, navigation with google layers is freakin' awesome

I have the same phone and ROM version and it updated just fine from the Market. However, I did push the software to my phone, following the instructions here. Not sure if that's why it works without issue.
So i guess its confirmed that this is still US only. BAH
"Some features of Android 2.0 are not available on Android 1.6, for example, the ability to use the "navigate to" voice command as shown in our demo video. However, you can still create a shortcut that will allow you to launch Navigation and start getting directions to a specific place from your current location with just a single touch from your home screen."

ugh...
If it is US only, why did they not restrict it to the US on the market ? Or maybe that's technically not possible with the current market configuration ?

Or you can search the Market for 'Nav Launcher' and it will enable these features through an external application. Works fine for me.
Same issue on a Mytouch 3G (32B,) in the US and also running Cyanogen 4.2.5.
This is a fresh install of cyanogen as well (literally nothing more than the 1.6 base image and then the cyanogen update.)
I'm also getting the "package not signed" error. Not sure what the problem is. Running CyanogenMod Android 1.6, but I honestly don't remember what version of Cyanogen it is.
This official update no different than the 1.6 hacked Maps w/Navigation that was pulled from the Droid dump.
Even if you can get it installed, you still need to use either Directions shortcuts or the Nav Launcher to get it working outside the US.
I keep getting errors cannont remove / no such file or directory
on cyan 4.2.5 seams like nothing different from 2.0 droid nav
I sure do wish that people stop giving apps 1 start because it doesn't work on cyanogenmod..... these are precisely the people that bring down heat on developers with their crying. God forbid they have to do a search on the net... and, dare I say, read 3 lines of text.
People need to realize we are not flashing official software here, and so we have no right to b*tch if something that's made for official software doesn't work on our hacked ones. There is not one dev here that I can remember who doesn't clearly say that if you break your phone it's your responsibility, not his, or the manufacturers. That's why we have this community here, if you're having problems most members here will help you out however they can because that's what this place is about tweaking our equipment as much as possible and fixing it when we mess up. I would say most people here enjoy helping others out with tech related stuff, I know I do in whatever way possible, but I have no sympathy for those that can't be a$$ed to read a few lines and just want to flash their phones with total disregard of what could happen.
How do you think google feels everytime they see a one star rating on one of their apps, or any other app, that works perfectly fine on official images when the person comments "DIS SUXXORS, IT B NOT WORKING ON C.M 4.2.5"? It's a miracle they didn't crack down on cyanogen much sooner than they did. PLEASE, PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE if you have issues with something you downloaded from XDA or any other site on the net that deals with this kind of stuff, don't go complaining to your mobile carrier, or whoever developed your mobile's official software; come here and ask for help... besides 99% of the time I'm fairly sure that we'll do a much better job of helping than anybody you can contact from your mobile carrier, or official developers. Also, if you brick you're phone be responsible for you're mistake; don't try to be sly and send it in because it's not working to your dev because again this only attracts unnecessary attention to this site. I'm fairly sure that cease & desist that xda received from MS a few years back was due to precisely this.
I've customized windows mobile, palm, symbian, android phones, plus ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, wii, and so far I've never brick anything, or at least not to the point I can't bring it back, so does this mean I'm super lucky? or super smart? Not really, it's quite simple really my secret is this: READ, Read like your equipment depended on it because quite frankly IT DOES.
Sorry for the rant guys, it's not directed at any one of you, but maybe just maybe one of these "people" will find it and correct themselves. I'd actually wish the mods would post something on the main page, but then again who am I kidding the problem originally arises from them not reading in the first place.
I agree.
Also not working on my phone (32a Magic). Currently looking for a work around.
I have searched for:
Google
Google Maps
Google Maps Navigation
Navigation
Etc, Etc, Etc...
and can NOT find this version in the market???
I updated to the latest "Google Maps" from the market, but it does not have the NAV Features.
AHA!
Redownloaded and now get the "Package Not Signed" error as well.
CyanogenMod-4.2.5
Tried to download the new Skype app Verizon released today from skype dot com/vzw and I get the "There are no matches in Android Market for the search com.skype.android.verizon
Am wondering if it's because I updated my phone to the leaked 2.1 and it's looking for 1.5 or ???
Anyone else tried this, especially anyone that's still on 1.5?
Thanks in advance for any info.
I'm getting that same result when searching for almost any app I'm trying to download. Even when using the QR code to an app I know is active in the market, my phone doesn't find any results.
It's wearing me out. Hope someone has an explanation. I have a feeling it is due to the leaked 2.1.

The android Market filters what apps show up due to your system version. So if you are running 2.1, like I am, and you try to find an application that only runs on an OS up to say... 1.5, then it won't show up.. :/
I tried this method....and it didnt work for me,but I am on a custom ROM, if you have the 2.1 OTA with root, you might be able to do this..
I didn't modify any files, I just did a bit of researching and found this
download this file:
www(dot)sendspace(dot)com/file/rnwab1
it is supposedly the 2.1 release version.
MD5sum= 5dc96431fae1be1aa51d7c50889273a5
then put this on the root of your SDcard
next, download installer from the android market and then run it... then select the zip file from the list and install..
---when I tried opening skype, it said "skype can only be used on verizon wireless phones"
I would like to know if this works for anyone...
this is a network issue not a version issue. most apps are designed to run on 1.5 so your past version check argument is a bust. but Verizon has not registered our device as being 2.1 compliant and until they do we will not have full functionality of the market. that's the way of the root game. us rooters being on the bleeding edge of android get locked out of a few things till our carrier catches up.

I sort of figured as much, and was after some happy logical confirmation type thinking which you've provided.
I don't really mind, just wanted to make sure that was why, and not something I was doing incorrectly.
Thanks.
I would like to update my daughter's Sprint hero to Froyo.
I would like to have back Sprint UI and and Sprint functions including PRL etc.
Which distribution should I use?
By Sprint UI do you mean HTC Sense like what came with the phone originally?
There aren't any fully functional Sense Roms running 2.2 that I know of. You can try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846493 which I used for awhile, but the camera doesn't work which is a pretty big draw back for me..
I think the main problem getting a 2.2 rom running Sense is that there isn't any CDMA 2.2 HTC Android phones out there yet.
Hope that helps.
OK, except the Sprint UI, wil everything else function correctly if I use the different rom?
I heard there are some problems with PRL updates.
If there package that contains the sprint stuff ,like Navigation, TV etc?
I haven't had any issues. You can find install packages for the sprint navigation and the sprint tv just fine. Only things that won't work are things specific to the HTC Sense like the clock/weather widget on the desktop. But there are alternatives!
I prefer the 2.2 AOSP personally....
and FYI, I think Google navigation > sprint navigation.
Will we get official mango update for htc hd 7?
I'm asking because it's ready and has been shipped to carriers for testing.
But news mention just nokia, and fujitsi.
So what about htc hd 7?
Of course we will. Not like Android, which chooses which phones will be updated. Official will be for all Windows phones!
Since its been shipped to carriers for testing have they given an actual date as opposed to the fall season.
The current version is beta, not for resale as it says on the windows screen when the phone starts. Certain things don't work and are not enabled including API's. Official version will be very soon, possibility as it looks is September, but no official word from Microsoft. Running mango myself, it is ready for release, few small glitches here and there lime html5 implementation API not working yet but is there. All the rest is fine. Volume now is loud and speakerphone is useful once again, as well as the volume steps are changed from 10 to 20 now. All the new hubs and custom hubs as email work great. Search, new look and feel market, people, photos, social integration, Facebook chat not yet. It is there but only redirects to Facebook. WiFi,3g, bt all work much better. Visual voice mail not available in this beta build. For anyone installing the test beta, please note that this. version will not upgrade to the official mango. One will have to revert to no-do first. All settings will be lost.
Microsoft has taken the Apple approach here, so almost all windows phones will get the MANGO update.
AS mentioned above its looking to come around september/October, unless you have a carrier branded phone which might push it a couple of months more, as Microsoft lets them test it for their networks.
It rumoured RTM is almost ready to be shipped so hopefully we on target.
Tried the mango beta and looks really promising.
Has anyone heard about WiFi calling?

Visual Voicemail works for me... And I do notice the volume is loader (thank god) but I don't see me being able to go to 20 instead of 10.....
Anybody verify this? Volume was always a big issue, especially plugging in to external speakers and such through the audio jack.

When you say the volume is louder do you mean when a headset or headphones are in? Also are they iphone/ipod loud?
What version of the beta are you running 2 or 1?

Microsoft wants a full blown complete update in one shot. Whether carrier branded or not as of RTM the carriers also have their time to test it so given that mid to late October is about three months from now I do believe everyone will be receiving the update regardless of carrier branding.
Even if Hd7 gets official Mango update, it will be a while before the users start seeing it. I would assume the new devices will get more attention for carriers.
If no new phones come out then its probably safe to say yes. If new phones with the mango update come out then its probably a no.
Hi Guys, the browser hack that wipes Samsung phones is not limited to just those handsets. These guys do a better job of describing the whole thing:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/26/3412432/samsung-touchwiz-remote-wipe-vulnerability-android-dialer
Here is a direct link to the exploit test:
http://dylanreeve.com/phone.php
I'm running MavRom4 with the China telco radio image and my device is vulnerable. Just wanted to share the info so people are aware; having two dialers and no default will force the exploit to ask you to actively pick a dialer; this would neutralize most cases but that is a pretty annoying work around.
Maybe people can post D3 Roms that aren't vulnerable.

Also, installing DialerOne and making it the default will protect you as well - you do not have to leave it without a default dialer set. DialerOne is actually a good dialer - I used to use it with my Droid Eris with CyanogenMod ROMs, in order to have the dial by name function that the Sense dialer supported back. And you can still leave the stock dialer set in a home page or on the launcher dock - it will still work if you call it up. It will not be called up if you launch the dialer from another app, though, if you make DialerOne the default.
The stock dialer is vulnerable - a predictable result, based on the vulnerability of MavRom, but I did want to say that I tested it. I haven't tested any other ROM - at this point, I don't have much time to try some out, and I think I recently deleted my most recent Liberty and Bionic Nandroid backups.
Let's see how long before Moto releases a critical patch update for stock.
Thanks, this is good to know. I thought it was only Samsung phones that had the issue, but since I'm still on stock 2.3.4 it appears I'm vulnerable. I have GrooveIP Lite installed on my phone, an app that allows you to make voice calls with using your Google Voice number. With this app installed I get a complete action using Dialer or GrooveIP window so I should be safe if I get a random popup Ill be sure to not select Dialer.
I heard about this "wipe" problem and when I saw it was just passing dialer codes to the fone I knew it would affect more than just Samsung.
Does anyone know if they have a list started of fones that might be vulnerable?
I read somewhere (though haven't tested it...) that the D3 does not have a dialer code that resets the phone, as the Samsung phones do/did. So, the D3 fails the display the IMEI test, but I believe that the reset code does not work with the D3.
FYI: CM10 kexec isn't vulnerable. Probably b/c it's JB (I think they fixed the vulnerability in JB). I go to the site and dialer pops up w/ *#06# No IMEI displayed
