Hi guys!
I'm completely new to XDA, and to the modding/unlocking process in general! But I've had my fair share of stock phones. The next one that I bouht is the HTC tilt 2 on AT&T, and I just had a few questions maybe someone can help me out..
Is there anything that I need to do to the phone in order to prepare it to be unlocked or modded, or is it pretty much just connect it and go?
As for ROMS, how would I be able to port, or install a version of 6.5.1 onto the AT&T HTC tilt 2, and would it even work since this is a carrier branded version?
I have been looking through the forums. You guys have managed to come up with some great stuff, I am impressed! But like many, I haven't a clue on how to do any of this..
Keep up the good work, guys!
Best,
Troy

+1 on the stickies, they're a great place to start. Also, the XDA-Developers forum Rules, and the HTC Rhodium Wiki are really good places to start off with. After you read all this stuff a few times, you'll understand it pretty well. Otherwise, welcome to XDA-Developers!
When you're done reading all that, check out this guide, and post any further flashing questions there.

Hello everyone. As you can probably tell I am new to this forum. I recently bought my first PPC (Tilt) and I am thoroughly happy with my device (thus far). Seeing how I am new to this genre of phones. I decided to surf the internet to see what kind of info was available for my new toy. To make a long story short, after I surfing the internet and visiting many different forums. I noticed the XDA or XDA developers being used frequently. So I decided to do a Google search which directed me here. I must admit I am thoroughly impressed by this forum (website) and plan to be a contributing member. I have learned so much about the capabilities of my phone. You guys are really amazing. Which leads me to my problem? I am having a difficult time understanding the verbiage being used to describe the various different upgrade features being discuss on this board. All That being said I have some question I would like to ask. But first I have decided to condense my questions on one thread as to make it easier for other interested parties as well as for me to find. However feel free to direct my question or to add a link that can answer my question at your convenience as I know many (if not all) these question have been answered in other threads (sorry remember I am unfamiliar with all these new words).
1)Is there some sort of getting started manual that I can used to better understand the various different words being used on this forum?
What does flash, cooking, roms, etc mean?
2) I would like to get rid of all the ATT stuff (for a lack of a better word) that on my phone and upload all the high speed HTC stuff.
I would like to do this in hopes of increasing performance as well as to have all the programs and features that where meant for the TYTN 2. If one could list the steps or refer me to the link that could do this it would be greatly appreciated.
3)How does a person find out about the various different applications or program that are available for my phone?
This would be of great interest to me. In particularly when it comes to music and radio stations. What is the best music/media player available? What is the best program to listen to various radio stations? And what site can I use to research this stuff?
4) Lastly I am really interested in all this voip stuff (Skyp, Google talk, etc). It would be pretty cool to use the internet to make phone calls instead of paying for daytime minutes. How would one go about doing this? Am I to understand that I can used my phone exactly the same way but through the internet?
I wanted to take the time to thank those who answered my question (and those that didn’t) as well as to developer of this board.
Thank you
Bulldog1
i think if you spend some time looking through these forums you'll be able to extrapolate many of these answers.
i'm not trying to be a jerk but your questions are kind of extensive and mostly answered with a bit of digging.
sorry.

No manual - you learn from osmosis.
I am pretty new around here as well... but a long time lurker...
So - to help as much as possible - here is a quick answer to your questions:
Flashing is when you overwrite / rewrite the firmware. It is the method used to put different ROMs on your device.
Cooking is where you create a custom ROM image - so it comes customized with whatever the chef puts on it.
ROM - think of it as an operating system image that is transfered from your computer to your device.

This site is chalk full of information about these kinds of things: Kaiser is pretty new - so hit one of the other forums under XDA. Software sitting on top of the OS should be pretty standard... ;-)

Kinda. But not as well. Data connections are more prone to dropping than voice calls.
It is cheaper to call internationally though... ;-)
So if you have a good connection and you aren't moving... it is a great alternative.

yeah, a glossary of terms would be great. as I read more it makes more sense and I find myself searching some of the terms online. be nice to have somewhere with meanings of WWE, SPL etc mean.
Welcome to the board. I would recomend reading all the wiki's that are stuck in each section and also the search button will bring many many threads on all the questions you have asked. Try this one to get you started. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser Good luck

I'm in the same boat as you. I read through the posts here and found them really helpful, especially the stickied ones about flashing ROMs.
The best way to get rid of the AT&T stuff is to flash your ROM. Flashing your rom to the HTC-rom will wipe the AT&T bundled software and replace it with the set that comes with the TyTn II (although no TomTom).
I've been trying to find answers to some of your questions too (especially where to find good software and media players), so I'm looking forward to replies from the older members.

WWE: World Wide English
SPL: System Programming Language (my guess?)
Welcome to the forum, i am also new. As to your question of what is the best media player, it is TCMP, it plays almost everything (even .flv files!) but support has been discontinued because the ppl made it a commercial product...mind you very tech savy ppl are still continuing support for it and adding codecs and stuff.
to download it and some codects, go to this website:
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/ht...cial-hybrid-media-player-all-codecs-here.html
Hope that helped
Thank you. I can understand that some question may too broad to answer in this thread. I understand that alot of my question are answered in other threads and for this I appologies.
The the reason I ask those question is becuase I do not understand the language being used. I have read (reread) the stinky under the kaiser upgrades tabs but still do not understand what exactly it is saying (or what it is supposed to do).
While I agree most of my other questions can be answered in other threads it would be of great help to me if someone could explain in greater detail to me my question number 2 which I have reprinted below.

Step 1: Download and use kaiser-HardSPLv1.zip and follow directions found here:

Step 2: Download HTC rom from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/5781641...dio_sign_22.45.88.07_1.27.12.11_Ship.rar.html
UnRar and run the executable.
Pat yourself on the back for getting me to type this out instead of reading the other forum yourself. ;-)
Oh - and if anything goes wrong... don't blame me.

You guys are great, I can see a sprite of sharing and helping in this forum. Again, you guys are the best, especially thanks to Daniel.
I bought a Chinese unlocked version Kaiser in Hong Kong, and I found out that it is not that convenience to me even though I can read Chinese. With Chinese Windows, it runs very slow. I decided to flash the ROM with HTC standard English ROM.
However, because of warranty issue, I need to backup the Chinese OS ROM, and restore it to its original setting if in case I have to take it back to HTC for repairing.
I am totally new to PPC or WM devices (I used to be a Palm lover), I wonder if anyone of you can tell me how to "Backup" and "Restore" the ROM. Detail instructions will be highly appreciated.
Sorry for my stupid questions, but I really don't know how. Whether I get the instructions or not, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!
Hello everyone,
having read the Kaiser wiki fairly extensively, I still haven't been able to find the answer to the most important question I had about it.
I recently purchased a v1615 (Vodafone branded Tilt) and the geek inside of me is burning to install a new rom onto it as the one that came with it sucks bad.
Would anybody be able to suggest which are the most popular (i.e best for most common usage) roms out there at the moment?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me.
Gab
The original rom in my tilt was very slow. I flashed my kaiser with one of Dutty's roms and its now much faster and already has most of the software I need already installed.
I like Duttys but Slueth has been the best for me so far.

If you really want to let the true geek in you out to play. Try them all. And I will see you at the NExt Flashers Anon Meeting.
hehe,
I appreciate all the advice.
I already have had a bit of a look around the forums now all I need to do is figure out which roms are where and then I'll start trying stuff out... thanks guys
Edit: Also, I have never actually flashed a smartphone before, I bow to those of you who have been in the "business" for a while, but me thinks I might need a bit more time to learn... the thing is, what sort of chance do you think there is that the whole process will drive me crazy? Seems a lil complicated, but doable so far. Just need to understand what all the various different things are for. (I.e. why radios aren't included in roms, and what they are actually for ..yaeh, im THAT noobish).
Anyhoo, thanks again fellas.
If you can follow simple intructions then I think you're going to be ok.
I'm sure I will be fine, but I have a feeling I might take advantage of the more generous of you at some point in the future again...

Welcome to the flashing club lol.
There is no "best" rom , just find the one that you think is "best" for you.
Yea, the Wiki and Faq here is very noob friendly. I started up as a new ppc user , but It has been so smooth. Most of the flashing trouble can be recover , as long as you dont mess with advance stuff like MTTY .
Try Dutty rom , they are very popular and updated frequently.
make sure you have hard SPL before flashing.
Peeps here are very friendly , as long as you read and research before any question.
Hey everybody, I have been looking this forum for quite some time to see what should I do when I get my Tilt. I couldn't find a definite answer so I guess the next best thing is to start a thread.
I'm getting my at&t Tilt this coming Wednesday and here is the list that I want to do when I get my phone:
1.unlock the device
2.remove at&t bloatwares
3.install HTC home screen, touchflo and touchcube(I don't know touchflo and touchcube are separate or not)
I found how to unlock the device, remove bloatwares and installing the home screen, I'm just confused about the touchflo and touchcube.
oh and btw, what is a ROM? sorry I'm a noob.
Thank you very much!!!

Keep reading and when you do have a specific question, post in an existing thread.
Hello there. I am seriously considering buying this phone and was wondering whether I should or not. Basically all the reviews are saying the same thing: that it has a lot of features that are well implemented, but it's way too slow. I was wondering just how much the tweaks and the available cooked ROMs sped things up, because I really, really want this phone.
Also, what apps from WM5 work on this device? I'm not really sure because of the VGA screen. Does PocketIRC work? What about PocketMusic? I know some applications work and others don't, I'd sort of like to know which, though :/
That information is all available in other topics. You are number #3213423 to post a topic whether he should buy it or not. We cannot decide for you. Read the possibilities yourself and make a decision. This thread, unfortunately like many, is completely useless.
i'll advice you to buy it only if you promise never to post again before you search and read all useless posts (like yrs) and reviews (full of them here and on the internet) that were written on subject. best advice: try google "diamond reviews" (so simple...)
if you don't agree with the above, than buy a polaris and go pest the polaris forum
Well that was completely rude. I decided to ask instead of searching through the hundreds of thousands of posts on this forum before I finally maybe found what I wanted. This is an GENERAL Diamond forum and people can ask whatever questions they want here, whether you choose to answer it is up to you.
Also I have done tons of research, about as much research as someone would do before they're about to shell out $600 for a phone, but the reviews don't really tell you how much cooked ROMs and tweaks help, do they?
If you pricks don't want to help me, fine. I'll ask on another, friendlier forum.
if you''l only be willing to use yr head. go to the "diamond ROM development", there are 7-8 threads with cooked ROMs. read them. usually there is one post regarding the ROM and lots of posts with comments on the ROM. read! you have even benchmarking with all ROMs:

too lazy maybe?

If you'd really done tons of research you would know that cooked ROMs really do help. That loads of software is available and that the phone is found brilliant by many users. Questions about battery, GPS etc are all easy to find. And as I've mentioned, you are not the first with these questions. You just had to look for a similar topic and you would also get the answers.
Whether or not you should buy it is completely personal. No one can enter your mind to have exactly your standards.

Damn, wrong forum. This should have gone in the general discussion forum. I'm really not sure why it's here, I must have been looking at two pages. Sorry.
A buddy has offered to sell me his TP2. He's on T-mobile, I'm on ATT. If he gets the unlock code, can I just pop in my ATT sim and start using it or do I need to do something else?
Also, once I get to know the phone I'll probably want to install one of the custom ROMs; are there problems with doing this?
Thanks in advance. Yes, I searched the forums. I have been active on the ATT TP forum, so I'm going to be new here! Hope this forum is as friendly as that one is!

yes put your sim card in and it will work, and no there is not any problems with flashing custom roms you just have to read the guides before you do anything, mostly if its your first time, first you have to HardSPL the fone if not done already, there is a guide for that, and then you should task29 the fone then flash xD also you can flash a radio, look through these forums and you will fine how to complete these, good luck!
Thank You!
Thank you! That's what I wanted to hear! I'm getting the phone tomorrow, so I look forward to checking this forum out more thoroughly!
The only other thing you may want to take note of is that you will not be able to access AT&T's 3G network on the T-Mobile Touch Pro2. The hardware radio does not support their 3G network. EDGE and GPRS will work fine, however.
