Hi!
I've put an app together (99% based on "Wireless Tether for Root Users") which allows tethering via USB. Clients need to support RNDIS - works fine with Microsoft Windows (tested with XP and 7) and Linux (OpenSuSE 11.1).
Zinx Verituse has ported the essential parts of the hero-kernel and cyanogen has introduced this feature in his latest rom. So, thanks Zinx for the patches and cyanogen for publishing on github.
Patches can be found here:
http://github.com/cyanogen/cm-kernel/commit/9fd56ebdb6aba91e9b17ddea490ec9b39a819112
http://github.com/cyanogen/cm-kernel/commit/1a57339f015c3bfa097cf1d3e82f3485a6652483
I've decided to create this app to give all rom-cooks the ability to use this feature without modifying system-services and/or system-apks.
What a cook needs to do: Patch your kernel and recompile - all other stuff is done by the app.
Download:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
Features:
* Tethering makes use of the mobile-data-connection (HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS) or WiFi-connection
* Uses correct domainname-servers - provided by your carrier or which are configured on the wifi-access-point you connect (even if the network changes => switch from 3g to wifi and vice versa)
* Allows to change the local-network (network/subnetmask)
Supported ROMs:
* CyanogenMod 4.2.3.1+
* Android Dev Phone 1
=> my kernel-update needs to be applied: http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/downloads/list?q=Kernel
* ?
Have fun!
Harry
THX a lot for this app
sudo dhclient usb0 and there you go
Good work.
Alot of the hero roms were finally able to get wireless tethering for root working on, well, hero roms. i installed, but cant get it working. What patch should i use, im using Sense Hero1.3.3
Hi Harry,
I'm visiting from the CDMA Hero forum, in the hopes that you might have some pointers on how to get this to work on the rooted CDMA Hero?
When I looked at this project over at code.google.com, it seems like this requires 1.6, where the CDMA hero is running 1.5. Will this fact doom us to ever run wired tether at this point?
From what I can tell on my Hero, everything seems to run fine until after I allow root access for the app. It then gives me a FC when accessing the system settings (as it's the one referenced in the FC.)
Can I apply your kernel safely to my ROM? Thanks in advance for your help!!
doesnt seem to work with macs

Did you try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443025?
I've been using the wired tether for the past week and have experienced some issues. Mainly, if the tether app isn't in the foreground, the process seems to randomly get restarted. This manifests as brief hiccups in internet access for the connected computer. Didn't experience this problem using WT4R (in bluetooth mode).
HW: Dream
App: wired-tether-1.0.apk
Kernel: adp 1.6 usbtether-r3
OS: Vista SP2
If I remember to, i'll post a log later tonight.
Could you please explain (or put in the first post) why use this while the current tether in Network Settings (CM4.2.x) works just fine?

If usb-tethering with cyanogenmod is working fine for you there is no reason why you should use this app. I've implemented just a few enhancements (using the correct domainname-servers, changing lan-config) - I don't know how cyanogen is doing this stuff (I don't use it).
The main-idea of this app was to bring usb-tethering to other roms (where system-settings can't be modified or roms which a pretty close to stock roms and heavily modified parts are not welcome). All you need for this is a modified kernel which can be easily done.

Ah, it hadn't occurred to me that other roms might not yet have tethering.
Thanks for your contribution then!
Very good! Thank you!
Anyone have the usb drivers for Windows XP?
Thanks in advance!
Has anyone used this successfully with Dwang 1.13? When Cyanogen came out with USB tethering it practically rendered mounting my sdcard and adb unusable. But this would be nice to use.
Sorry...Here's the link for it all.

awesome app
hey dude thanks for this app. i have cyanogenmod 4.2.5 and i know usb tethering is enabled on there but i didnt know how to get it to work. this app made it easy and painless i just had to download htc sync for hero and it worked like a charm. love it..
Just wanted to jump in and say thanks. I'm using this in my newest build and it works like a charm. I couldn't remember the authors name so i came here to get it so I can give credit, so while I'm here I wanted to say good job, and thank you

This does work on dwangs 1.13 ... however it broke the cell network I was unable to get cell signal or network so it did me no good. I am working on way to fix this but I have not done dev for any phone in a long time, so it may take me a while to find out what is doing this.

Im not sure if the dev is a member of xda
but he had successfully booted a HTC desire rom.

According to him
Working
- Radio (Calls,GPRS,HSPA)
- USB
- Bluetooth
- Milestone bootup AC charging
- Wireless (Only static IP address.
DHCP is faulty at this stage)
- most apps from HTC and Motorola
(most untested)
- MilestoneOverClock v1.32
- SetCPU 1.54
- Sam2
- apps_installer
- MarketEnabler
- Camera
Not Working
- PINCODE (will not be able to enter any pincode or boot normal)
- GPS (at least not seen it working)
- DHCP for wireless
Update: According to his reply on youtube " i think going to modmymobile (.com) will explain it all..
but yes, right now i got the camera working as well, leaving just GPS not working and pincode setup."
All credits goes to the Dev (dext3r).

Yes! except that these links i have given are made by other dev on another forum.
and was made possible 10-12 hrs ago only.
Looks pretty amazing. I don't know if I have the guts to try that on my Telus Milestone. I would probably lose 3G (but Fido at least has EDGE too). Maybe I'll just wait that out for now.
I wonder though, in another thread I was told:
DAGr8 said:
cmstlist , there is an easy way to retain your baseband just flash the HK sbf , then , copy paste these files and make sure you set the permissions correctly .
Probably safest to do via adb if you dont make sure you reboot ...
for the 3G baseband Hack/Swistch it 5 files from /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default
File_Audio , File_Audio2 , File_GSM , File_Seem_Flex_Tables , generic_pds_init

So perhaps if you want to try Motosense on your Telus Milestone, then you should backup these 5 files (and take note of the permissions) before flashing the nandroid image. Then afterwards if 3G doesn't work on the Motosense image, restore the same 5 files.
I would imagine Titanium Backup might be a viable way here to copy most of your app data from stock to Motosense.
Still... how in the world... was this accomplished?

no offense to all the programmers and the so called 'real hackers'
this was done using methods the above mentioned usually despised and mostly dismissed/ disregard .
common sense , risk , guts and of course a good UNIX understanding
btw there s a fixed 'new' version out at link is at motorolafans.com as well as in page 4 of the thread at M3 ( modmymobile.com)

Can you keep us posted about the developments of this?
since you are the other half of Dext3r in porting the Motosense, i sure hope people here will appreciate it very much.
Anyway, can this be done in a Telus Milestone?
looks very interesting, i know that nexus one. 2.2 is out now, so is it possible to get the 2.2 froyo from there and then load via the same method, this would mean flash and maybe the wifi may work?
I found out the hard way that apparently the WPA2 implementation in Android is faulty. This means it can not connect to WPA2 secured APs which enforce strict specs:
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=25870
Would it be possible to fix that in CM ?
Cheers,
Karl
Android is using wpa_supplicant, it doesn't implement the protocols on its own.
So you are saying the bug is actually in wpa_supplicant ?
Should i try to make them aware of the problem ?
First time I hear that, although I have at home WPA2 personal and my Legend connects with it normally.
I have a WPA2 personal network both at home and at my dorm, and my HeroC has been able to connect to them fine no matter what ROM I've used (stock, Sense 2.1 custom ROMS, and CM6/7)
According to the openwrt link i posted above it seems to be a problem with the drivers on openwrt enforcing strict RFC compliance and the wpa_supplicant not sticking to it. So it might just be a problem for a specific setup.
However, the question now is if that should be fixed in android or if openwrt should relax its rules.
I just try to find out which community would be the right one to address...
Hey AliBa !
People at openwrt think its a problem of the TI wireless drivers, and that it could be fixed in CM:
This is not a problem with OpenWRT, hostapd, or wpa_supplicant (the latter two are the same project, and mostly written by one person). This is a bug with Android wifi drivers that do not properly follow spec.
The TI Wilink driver I referred to is particularly at fault, and disabling WMM on the router is a band-aid to the problem - not a fix or a real solution. wpa_supplicant is not even involved in this process since the Wilink driver generates the RSN on its own.
The people who need to address this are TI, not openwrt or CM or someone else (or CM can put in a patch to fix the TI Wilink driver, which is probably a good idea anyway).

There are two RSN settings in tiwlan.ini:
Code:
RSNPreAuthentication
RSNExternalMode
...try setting latter to external.
Hey BlaY0 !
This .ini file is in the build tree, not on the phone, right ? Or can i set that on my phone ?
If its a part of the build files, do you think I should file a bug at CM ?
It's on the phone... /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini. It's configuration file for driver itself.
Might be a noob-problem, but i am unable to write to the file.
I tried terminal emulator, su, vi /etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini, but its read-only.
Any other way i can try this ?
Use recovery to do that or you can use system overlay.
Sent from my HTC Legend
Tried switching the RSN..-config to external as mentioned, but it's not working here.
Hmm, anything else we can do ?
AliBa, are you sure you could not fix this ?
People at openwrt think it could be patched in CM:

Cheers,
Karl
Yes, I'm sure I can't fix that.
If it's not caused by wpa_supplicant then there's nothing we can do. Sources for neither firmware nor kernel module are open sourced so there's no way to patch them.

It's a royal PITA, and we all dislike HTC, Motorola, Samsung etc. for doing it. That said, the CM team do an unbelievable job of dealing with it as well as they do

Every Google device was as close to open source as possible with all kernel sources being released. It's companies like HTC that corrupt that whenever they can. For example they put code into the framework that would normally go into the kernel just to not having to release it.
Moreover, the sources for wl12xx were open sourced by TI using a BSD-like license. The even sadder problem is that HTC modified them and then deliberately removed those modifications (headers) from the kernel sources they released.
So its a dead end, and really nothing can be done about it?
Can't believe that!
HTC Wifi hotspot (Tethering) doesn't work for me.
Despite my PC (Win7 x86) is connected to wifi hotspot of IncS, I can't access any http/https servers via wifi tethering.
(but strangely, I can use skype, IRC, nslookup, ping to google from my PC.)
I think it is not problem of my telephone career, because i can use wifi tethering on stock rom without problem.
wifi tethering works also on custom rom i made from stock one WITHOUT UNITY V2 kernel.
I tried Android Revolution HD 1.1.0 and custom rom I made from stock one WITH UNITY V2 kernel. wifi tethering didn't work on both roms.
so I think this is kernel problem. I reported this to m-deejay via twitter, but no reply.
is this problem only for me?
Currently answering using Wifi Tethering on Virtuous Unity 1.27.0.
So working for me.
Same with me, no worries, it works very well...
Can you tell us what applications you have installed on your device?
thank you for your quick reply.

I also tried android-wifi-tether, but it didn't work.
My environment is Android Revolution HD 1.1.0, Radio_20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M.
Finally, I got it!
I've forgot I flashed build.prop modify patch after I installed ARHD rom.
it was why I couldn't use wifi tethering.
my modified build.prop contains following line:
Code:
ro.ril.enable.sbm.feature=1
this is to enable feature for softbank mobile (japan), which is my career.
(so I was wrong. this is problem of career.)
I added this line to build.prop because this improves battery and connection stability in softbank mobile network.
however unity kernel and this line causes problem at wifi tethering.
I think newer version of kernel has feature to deny http access via wifi tethering with ro.ril.enable.sbm.feature.
Temporarily I removed ro.ril.enable.sbm.feature line, and now I can use wifi tethering.
but i think i need ro.ril.enable.sbm.feature.I hope it can be fixed.
thank you, Neolight78 and Nvidia32.
Sounds great.
If I asked for the list of installed applications, it is because I found that a particular application "Masqued Crusader" cause a dysfunction of Wifi Tethering, but in your case it was not that
This rom is based from zukriaksah's miui 1.12.16. His had a good foundation just some issue. I have made some changes to it and so far things are working (keep in mind that this has not been tested for a little more than 2 days).

you will have issues with wifi on this rom - the work around that I used it to load cacingkalung's modded version of the sd kernel...get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20326475&postcount=240
had to change the build.prop this phone keep rebooting with some of the files that I had to switch out. I used files from tj and issac.
usb and headphone issues are gone (so far)
added the miui 4-way reboot (hold power button for options)
the fm radio that is in the rom fc's (wish someone can fix this..I am at a loss, I know that it has to be a driver issue but I have no clue which one have been searching for weeks it seems to correct this...I really miss the radio)
added some init.d tweaks...these are found in the various forums here on xda
you might have to load script manager to get them to work (I load this anyways so I dont know if it is needed)
what I added to the init.d:
10cpu - sets the cpu values and govenor
11 iosched - set i/o scheduler
both of these you do not need if you use setcpu or other program like it...I just dont like to have these loaded they take up space and memory.
80netspeed - internet speed hack (helped on mine)
97ks - some kernel mods - helps rom run smoother in my opinion
98kt - internal task killer values
you dont need these you can remove them...play around with the settings you might be able to tweak the rom more to you liking...these are the values that worked best for me
I dont have much of a clue on the battery life yet...have had phone up and down so much that I have not let it go threw my daily pace
So far things seem stable...still no HDMI, dont know if we will ever have this...I am not that good with dev have look at other roms but if the drivers aint right it wont work
I also use force2sd to move the programs to the sdcard to free up the internal memory...everytime that I have tried to include apps2sd thing go wrong..this way works for me so I am not going to worry about it
you will probably get unknown for the carrier...if you know your spn values you can edit it and the name will show up...there are progams in the market that will fix it...other have had luck with out needing a program...In the miui forums they have miui extra setting and they say that you can use it to change the carrier name (never tried)
make sure that you do a system wipe before installing....I dont know what issue you will get if you dont

you might have to load script manager to get them to work (I load this anyways so I dont know if it is needed)
what I added to the init.d:
So far things seem stable...still no HDMI, dont know if we will ever have this...I am not that good with dev have look at other roms but if the drivers aint right it wont work
I also use force2sd to move the programs to the sdcard to free up the internal memory...everytime that I have tried to include apps2sd thing go wrong..this way works for me so I am not going to worry about it
you will probably get unknown for the carrier...if you know your spn values you can edit it and the name will show up...there are progams in the market that will fix it...other have had luck with out needing a program...In the miui forums they have miui extra setting and they say that you can use it to change the carrier name (never tried)
make sure that you do a system wipe before installing....I dont know what issue you will get if you dont

emt,
I will look at the files and see what I missed for the bluetooth. Sorry I dont use it so I didnt test it.
hey COWSGO..... really thanks for the this beautiful ROM.
quite smooth ...... experience .....
really happy with the ROM.
next time when you update the ROM with Bluetooth wish following update also ....
1. Camera if possible (Front)
2. Time should be at center of status bar like what you did with 1.12.2
3. FM if you able to repair ....
enjoy your holidays .....
Dont know if anybody has gps issues or proximity issues....I did....this is what I did to solve this
use root explorer goto system\lib\hw and rename two files to .old
the files are gps.fb0.so and sensors.fb0.so
then goto settings click programs and goto call settings and turn off enforce proximity (what ever the option is under use proximity sensor
reboot....after I did this the sensor works with incoming and outgoing calls and the gps locks in under 30 seconds. used gps status from the market to confirm...dont for get the you might have to edit the gps.conf file in system\etc (I think)...if you didnt edit this file after you loaded the rom then it will be set for north-america.
dont know why this worked....has to be a issue in the files...when I get more time I am going to decompile them to see what is different
Well I got permission from zarboz to use this kernel, but having problems with WiFi. Tried with sun_dream sense 5. Tried wiping cache and factory reset still same problem going to try on stock. Well tried on medusa Rom same problem. Must be in kernel. Any help would be appreciated and welcomed.

The more info we can gather the easier it will be to find a fix for this. So if someone can test this out and give us some feedback, thank you very much .
Is there any other kernel for this phone that has WiFi working? Maybe I could try to get the WiFi piece from the good one and put it into this one.
The medusa and sense 5 would I just replace all WiFi references.

after flashing this kernel, could you do this for me:
1. Flash UKM http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/zip-synapse-script-universal-kernel-t2736986
2. Install "synapse" (its an app), reboot
3. Go into synapse, you should now be able to configure the kernel (if you still cant, refer to the link above).
4. Post screenshots of EVERYTHING
5. Upload your build.prop (/system/)
i wish i had a first i could go through the file system myself.
Edit:
Hopefully stock android filesystems stay the same from version to version. im on 5.0 at the moment on my nexus but try some of these things too:
1: delete this folder /data/misc/wifi/ And /data/misc/dhcp and system/etc/wifi reboot. (try deleting 1, then reboot, then if it doesnt work, delete the first 2 folders, reboot, if that doesnt work, delete all 3. try different combos).
(and/or)
2: force stop Bluetooth Share (i think you can go to apps>all> and find it there. reboot
3: drain the battery to 0. like make sure the thing is DEAD and wont boot even into recovery. let it sit for some time. plug in your charger and turn it on at the same time.
here is some additional info. if you want to try this. go right a head!

Hello all!
I registered here so that i could share a possible solution to the stuck wifi problem. On my nexus the BT was also stuck most of the time.
Been having the problem for about two weeks and was about to do a clean install and, if the problem persisted, call Google support. Thing is, I had the feelling it was software related and that the hardware was ok.
I´m not sure if BT, Wifi and NFC use the same hardware but the fact was that wifi worked for a few days, BT for a few more and NFC was always functional.
I did some extensive research thru the web and it seemed that this problem was not nexus unique and seemed to be related with wpa_supplicant.conf or wpa_supplicant in the bin file.
On this page, mind you the text is pretty old and not entirely android related:
http:_//_blog.linuxconsulting.ro_/2010/04/porting-wifi-drivers-to-android._html (I can't post links yet so just copy past and remove spacing)
I found this little snippet that caught my attention:
Seems that you can add ap_scan=1 to your wpa_supplicant.conf depending on the drivers you have.
After some more research on the subject of ap_scan i found that:
It seems that addind ap_scan=1 imposes that wpa_supplicant.conf handles the scanning and AP selection. IF there's something wrong with the driver, and not with wpa_supplicant as i originaly thought, this could bypass the problem.
So I added ap_scan=1 just before the device identification lines in wpa_supplicant.conf, reeboted, and now the wifi and bluetooth toggle normaly. I've tried ap_scan=0 (the driver handles the scanning) and the problem returns, so ap_scan=1 does allow you to toggle the wifi and BT on.
I can't yet verify that the phone actually connects to a wireless network and has the same stability and range as before as I'm at work and there's no wireless here.
Therefore I ask for your help to verify this "fix" and thoughts on this.
Sorry if the post is a mess. Both english and programming aren´t my native languages...
My device is a Nexus 5 with stock 4.4.4 KitKat and root.
Greets.
---------- Post added at 10:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:46 AM ----------
So, quick update:
Managed to find an wireless network around and connected to it. Some time later, no sure how much, the phone rebooted.
Some time after that the wifi and Bt were stuck again. Accessed wpa_supplicant.conf and deleted the new wireless network information. Rebooted and all was functional again.
Seems the fix is incomplete as any rewrite of the wpa_supplicant.conf reinduces the initial problematic behaviour...
____________________ Extra Update_______________________
Ok, so it seems that the wpa_supplicant.conf is suposed to have ap_scan=1 by default.
After boot and when I connect to a wifi network my file resets and shows without ap_scan=1 and instead of:
ctrl_interface=wlan0
its
ctrl_interface=data/misc/wifi/sockets
Wifi with a conf. like this never works. If I manualy "correct" the file and reboot, the wifi toogles on, but after a wifi connect gets busted up again.
by now I've done:
- copy wpa_supplicant (the bin file) from a stock 4.4.4
- Check file permissions for all wpa_supplicant files
- dirty flash the stock build (it's my original build so less harm done i guess)
- 2 Clean installs
- 6 factory resets
And the problem persists.
I've called google support and they are sending a new phone as we speak. Now I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware problem (maybe a combination of the two?) but I figured it would be better to reroll a device instead of trying to fix this one as this problem is cleary out of my league.
Thank you all!
