Themes - knowledge point - Android Themes

Hello,
First post and allready asking stuff.
I'm starting on making themes and although I have read a lot of stuff I can't get it.
Major questions:
- Do I need to have a custom rom to make themes? Can I install a theme on a standard, factory clean android magic?
- What are those RC33, Rc30, etc... And how do I know what do I have?
At the moment I have a stock HTC magic 32A. The only non standard thing in it, is it's rooted.
The build number only says: CL#33743 (no RC stuff...).
Any help would be appreciate.

take a look at this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519924

Hey smurf... thnks for the answer.
I've allready readed that post (and most of the links in it), and still got the same questions.
They only talk about G1/dream and all those RCXX... The problem my magic says CL#33743. Am I missing something here? Do I need to install a RCXX image?

afaik you have to be rooted to install themes, an exception is when you are using a home replacement.
RC stands for Release Candidate and its just a version numbering thing i guess...

Hello again...
Yeah, I tried instead of just asking.
After a few more reading I realise I was making some confusion. I have a rooted phone so I just adb pull the files I needed to theme (framework-res, htclauncher, etc...) changed the drwable files and adb push them again
It's kinda of what a update.zip does but with more files. Nothing better that trying
Now I just don't know why some people ressign apk's, but I guess a little more reading will fix that too.
Thnaks for your help smurf.

G1 Problems and ROM Questions...

Hey guys and gals. I'm new here but I did have a few questions.
Right now my G1 is giving me problems. Here is the scenario. I have loaded into my phone the OpenHome with the Aero theme, BetterCut, Font-Games font pack, and the Icon pack for Aero. Once I set OpenHome to only use 3 screens, I get a force close error. Then, if I were to shut off the phone and then restart it, it hangs on the Android screen (the new one since I already have the cupcake loaded into my phone).
Has anyone had this problem? Any work arounds to fix it?
I was also thinking of rooting my phone to see if that would fix my problems.
Which ROM would you recomend for me to use? and what are the pros and cons for each. Not looking to the Rosie or Sense UI rom yet, but the basic Cupcake rom.
Thanks
This post is in the wrong section as this is for development only.
If you do root your mobile, I would currently suggest Cyanogen's ROM as its up to date, stable and has some cutting edge stuff inside. The theme is also sleek and lightweight without any real modifications to make it look like Hero etc.
XDA timeout - double post.
Thanks for you help.
And my bad about the double post. I'll be chillin in the penalty box if anybody needs me.
Don't worry about it, the double post was by me as XDA struggles with the amount of users hitting the forum ^_^ There's a new Q&A section for the Dream so you can post questions and that which are not related to the development of Android. Unless its a specific ROM issue usually the posts go there.
Hope the rooting and the use of the ROM of your choice goes well!
One last question.
Where can I find specific directions on how to root my phone for the very first time?
I've located a few things but keep getting errors when I try to install the ROM?
Thanks for all your help

helps me a lot when I'm in trouble.. it also covers everything you need..
Indeed, its a decent thread of which I hope still gets updated. I've also had it in my signature too, to help raise the awareness of such an FAQ.
I'm looking around and not seeing anything concerning Non-rooted phones already running cupcake (Build CRB43).
Will I have to downgrade to RC29 in order to begin rooting my phone?
And is that possible even though I'm running the latest version of Android (ver1.5)?
Good question! I didn't see that you had 1.5 OTA running as it wasn't stated in your original post so we assumed you were running on 1.1. I just quickly read that you wanted a basic cupcake ROM...
You would have to downgrade yeah if you want to obtain ROOT and thus enabling you to flash custom ROMs and other goodies.
Yes, you have to downgrade to RC29 and it can be done with the latest version of the phone software. Follow the directions they already posted. It's reasonably straightforward. There's even a video guide on youtube so you can see what the various screens look like.

I'd like it to be proof-read by somebody else. Not meaning to be disparaging to your possible skill, but a guide written with the same rampant disregard of English shown here is likely to lead to confusion. Guides and tutorials should be written mindful of the fact that exactness and clarity is required.
I would really like to know how to sign a ROM... mainly because I'd like to be able to modify existing ROMs with different apps and ringtones prior to flashing, which would be MUCH easier than having to do everything through Terminal after flashing.
It would help if there was a list of hero apps that would work when creating a normal G1 rom (not hero).

Look in the theme forum for stericson's auto-signing tool. You can sign roms with it. Its reallyeasy to set up and you can use it to sign .zip files. Its what i use with all my themes and it works great
I am at work on my phone right now but when i get home i will edit this post with a link to it if i remember

Just rooted my G1 to RC-29

I just got a G1 and I rooted it to RC-29.
I'm very new to any of this hacking stuff and I have no idea what to do next. My guess is that I need to update to RC-33 and/or firmware 1.5? Along with installing the multi touch and things like that...?
I've read up on some information and JesusFrekes or something like that used to have a lot of updates for the rooted G1, unfortunately all the download links on his site don't work so I have no idea where to go from here... Can anyone tell me what I should do?
look in androidandme.com or google rc-33 and g1 rooting and stuff, idk
If you have root now, you can flash the newest cyanogen rom. check out the cyanogen thread in dream development. JF isn't updating roms anymore. Without danger/death/haykuro special spl (search it in these forums), and seeing as how you are new to this I suggest cyanogen ROMS are your best bet Also check out www.cyanogenmod.com and the cyanogenmod wiki.

hi there. i highly suggest that you follow previously posted suggestions. as you can see, this is my very first message to post on this forum and i have been a member for over 2 years. i have had my dream/G1 for almost a year now. in that time span, i have gained root access, flashed a couple of haykuro's builds, flashed jesusfreke's ROM, disappeared for awhile, came back, couldn't find jesusfreke anymore. after doing some research, i discovered the genius cyanogen and flashed his ROM, and then another, and then another, until i am finally currently running the 4.2.2 version. i did all of this without knowing a thing about linux and without any hacking or programming skills. i did all of this simply by reading, researching, reading, googling, reading, reading, and more reading. i promise you, everything that you need to know - guides for noobs with step by step instructions - are here in this forum. once you find these guides, try them them out, step by step. if you hit a snag, or something goes wrong, re-read the instructions to make sure you followed them exactly. if you think you did, search for the error that you stumbled upon. i'm going to go out on a limb and say that i'm 100% positive that someone else has had the same problem and it has already been solved and someone else has probably written a guide for the next noob to read once he/she comes across the same error. but he/she just has to find said guide! once you search and find this guide, follow the instructions, if you do not understand something or simply cannot, i mean simply cannot find an answer or help to solve your problem, then i suggest you resort to asking a question. but, only as a last resort.
but, it has been my personal experience that everything i have needed has been either at this forum or found through google search. these developers have not only made me love my phone once again by developing such sweet ROMs, but they even wrote up some very easy to follow guides for the newbies so even we can enjoy them too!
so: research, read, follow instructions exactly as they say, only ask questions if you seriously cannot find the answer after doing some serious serious research, then proceed to flash your phone. hell...if this math lovin' accountant girl here can do it, i'm sure anyone can! but only after hours and hours and pages and pages of reading and researching.
p.s. the very first sticky in this q&a forum shows you what to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679

I'm confused...so did you fix it?
gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed
search for that ^
nope have not fixed it yet. seems like its a original dev phone but it came boxed brand new. in the mean time, the data sync does not open
and
system update gives the error - com.setting error or something like that..
im looking into gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip, thanks for all your help..
You can get Gapps from here:

However Gapps is not an .apk file. You need to flash Gapps with the help of a recovery ROM & for that you need to have Android SDK installed. If all this is latin and greek to you; you should visit here

I would also suggest you to go through ROM Bible sticky in this section.
Alternatively you can unzip gapps file and look for marketUpdater.apk in system>app folder and install it manually. I have not tried this method ever but you can give it a shot; it will not brick your phone.
Thanks for the answer guys, i think i have a dev phone had a look at the rom bible so i can root i . but i dont know what rc versoin the device is cos this does not exist in the build number as in post one. also can you recommend a stable rom update for a beginner.
at amitabhishek the first link you have posted does not work, also is there a way to root a dev phone, or is it already unlocked dont want to try a rom and brick the phone.
Moved as not Android Development.

Request Stock unmodified framework-res.apk

Hy guys. I'm trying to create a theme for my phone and wondered could anyone upload the nexus 1's stock unmodified framework-res.apk?
Thanks in advance.
Tryed allready the search button and google to no avail.
How about starting with the fact that there is no "stock", you need to define the OS version / build? Specifically, it was originally shipped with ERD79, upgraded to ERE27, then Froyo came and it was FRF91, and now it's 2.2.1, FRG83. What is "stock"?
When you answer that question, why don't you visit my signature, download ROM of your choice from there, and extract the framework-res.apk out of it? It might take less time than waiting for someone to do it, especially that most people that are capable of doing it and have their phone rooted, run custom ROMs...
Alternatively, you could just get it from your phone.....
adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk
Sent from my Nexus One

First off thank you for answering. Second why all the "attack".
I'll refrase my question:
I would like, if I don't disturb you, an unmodified froyo stock version framework-res.apk.
Any version would do.
The reason that I don't extract mine is that I don't own a nexus 1. As visible in my signature I own a galaxy S. And yes mine is rooted also, and yes it's modified mutch like yours, and I would like to modifie it some more, hense the request for framework-res.apk.
I'm sorry to say that I'm not sure how to extract it from a rom that is not flashed in a phone.
Yes I'm a little newbie in some things but I came here to learn and to try things. I didn't ask either of you to build me a rom or make me anything, thats what I'm trying to do myself, and not bother anyone whit my wishes.
A bit off topic. Sorry for that. If you can't or won't upload thats fine to.
PS You don't have to be mean.
I've uploaded for you framework-res.apk from old Enomther's build, which is somewhat resembling stock. I really don't want to download 80MB of a stock ROM only to extract a file from there and put it here. And as I said, most people that are rooted and run stock ROMs aren't able to help you, having no idea what to do because they rooted the phone without any understanding, and those that are, mostly run custom ROMs and don't have stock ROM available. My current framework-res won't help you either, because it's modified.
Nexus ROM is a simple ZIP file, packed with exactly the same directories as the ROM, and all the files in them. In the /system/app, you find framework-res. Extracting the file from there is as simple as extracting the file from any ZIP archive.
This wasn't an attack, but an explanation and suggestion to do something yourself. Obviously it didn't work.

Thank you. And your wrong it did work. It made my keep reading and managed to extract from a stock rom I downloaded. So I have to thank you because you made me work harder and now I know how to extract files from an .img.
PS I still think you were talking a little bit like you are superior to others.
No offense of course that is just my opinion and it might be very wrong.
Again thank you for your help and I mean that sincerely.
Well, I was maybe a bit sarcastic, but I didn't mean to offend you at all. Sorry if it sounded harsh.
P.S. I completely forgot that stock ROM doesn't look like custom ROMs, and contains complete IMGs. There is an easy way to extract them - using unyaffs - but you already know it, since you did it. I'm really sorry for forgetting that part, if I'd remember that - I'd point you to the relevant guide to begin with. My bad.
