Hi there
Have just noticed that Google Maps 4.00 is out and I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise if updating to this new version is advised?
If it is I would then be interested to understand what would be the best way, ie, uninstall previous verison/install new, install new over top of old, etc.
As a matter of interest and on this subject I cannot seem to find a way to uninstall the current version of GM that cam installed on my device as standard, ie, from HTC, and if we are talking an over the top install then how would one revert back to the original version if one is not happy with the new.
I would of course take a full back up of my device before the install of the new but I was wondering if there is a simpler way given that the downlaod is in fact a .CAB...?
Thanks in advance for any objective thoughts or guidance provided.

If GM was cooked into your ROM, you cannot uninstall it.
Just install over it and if you don't like it, uninstall and it will revert back to the cooked in version.
If you've backed up your device you've got nothing to lose.
Hi Bruce
Might have known that it would be you with the first response...do you ever sleep? You appear to be tireless!
Thanks for the reply. As I have a stock HTC ROM I am assuming that GM was officially 'cooked' on the ROM. Not sure what the version is but it must be pre v3.3 as that was released after I got my device.
Will give the v4 install a try as I understand that recent releases are more functional (makes sense) given that I should be able to revert.
Cheers

Hi Bruce
Just one further question...and please excuse my ignornce if it shows but I presume that the version of GM that came with the device is effectively installed to the device?
If that is the case do I need to install the newer version to the device as well or can I install it to the storage card (I assume that repsonses will be slower if I can/do) instead or will that just confuse things, ie, effectively having 2 versions of the same app installed?
Tell me if I blathering on this point...but thought it wise to ask. One learns so much asking (and nice knowledgable people responding).

Yes, I sleep, I just monitor the forums while I'm at work. It gives my brain a rest...
Generally there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one that is asked twice...
Defintely install to your device as anything that access GPS functionality can be severely impacted by installing to storage card.
GPS software is different because it installs to your device but stores the databases on the storage card.
All GM data is online.
Also multiple versions will confuse your system.
When you install the v4 cab, it automatically removes the older version. And it asks if settings and places (or star marked or whatever it's called) should be saved.
So just go ahead.

Glad to hear that you do sleep...and know what you mean about needing to give the brain a rest at work.
Thanks for the response. Will go ahead with a device install.

@cpedersen - thanks for your input too. Much obliged.
So did you successfully install v4?
How is it compared to the older version?
Hi, can anybody point me to a GM 4 upgrade link or a .cab..., I tried the official way but keeps telling me that my "M850" is not compatible. Thank you

Hi,
Have installed the latest version(4.0) of GM on my unit and it works allright. Latitude integration has been included for google buzz. Also starred items on your maps on your google account show up here is you sign in there
Have installed GM Mobile 4.1 on my Topaz (Touch Diamond2 T5362). Downloaded via IE Mobile, because using Opera 10 Mobile the device was not recognised correctly.
Particularly like the (new) Voice Search: is even localised to recognise our accent which is important as our local enunciation is allegedly somewhat indistinct.
What else is new in GM 4 ?

does the voice search work in diamond2? mine doesn't work although there is a sentence telling you something like to keep pressing (the button to make call) for voice search, i tried many times, nothing comes out!

Works as advertised on my Diamond2; press call button (don't hold down), say search word(s), bingo.
How do I download and use the "[email protected]" app from USAA bank from outside the US? It's free but I need to get a legitimate copy of it for obvious reasons. I emailed USAA and did the obvious Google searches before posting this, but I am getting nowhere. I am making the assumption that they are limiting it to the US market (I'm in the UK). I am running a compatible version of Android, so I should see it, but I don't. Here are my basic questions:
1) If I got the .apk somehow and installed it here in the UK, would it work from here?
2) Would using a wifi connection with it be different than a mobile network?
3) If #2 is yes, could I configure my router to use a US proxy?
I really like the idea of taking a picture of a check with my G1, and depositing it that way. If anyone has figured this out please let me know how it works. Thanks.

These are assumptions, not answers:
Most likely it would work from UK in any form you try to use (WiFi/network). I would assume since USAA will have clients outside of the US for obvious reasons there would probably be no check that you're on a US carrier.
If you're having trouble getting the apk, I could download it from the market and send it to you. Send me a PM and I can email it to you.
Here it is. Hope it works from abroad!
Sweeet!
Thanks, r4d14n7. I appreciate the help. I just tried it over wifi and it worked no problem. Haven't tried it over 3G but I bet that works too. I was using the regular [email protected] before, but this is even better.
** Mods if you can change the title of the post to "[email protected] .apk outside the US?" it would help others searching for this same issue. I'm a noob and I wasn't able to type it out correctly...thanks.

What phone and version are you using, because I DL'd and tried to install, but it keeps giving me "aaplication not installed".
I'm using Sprint HERO, but version 2.1, so I should be good to go, thanks.
forty01 I'm using the latest stable Cyanogen build (4.2.15.1) on a HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1. I downloaded the .apk to my desktop, then transferred it to the memory card on the phone over USB, and disconnected the cable. Then I just navigated to the .apk file in Astro file manager and opened it (touch the .apk file in Astro and then touch "open app manager"). I've got the phone's SD card partitioned with the apps running off that (apps to SD). You probably did the same thing but I'm covering all the basics here to avoid any confusion. Hope you get it working. If I left anything out here just ask for help again.
Yess i have the htc eris and can not find the mobile banking app for regions can any one help??
That was downloaded from the market just before I posted it (10Mar2010). I'm running a G1, but I'm not sure that makes any difference. I'm a little noobish when it comes to apks
I overlooked something obvious here but I'm learning. I just tried the "Market Enabler" and now I see the USAA app from overseas. That's got to be the simplest way to grab it, and keep it updated.
Can I get this to work on Cupcake? I'm running the Aloysius ROM on a CDMA Hero. The software version says 1.56.651.2, and the .apk above won't install.

Not on Cupcake (Android 1.5), it runs on Donut (Android 1.6) or higher.
From the USAA website... "The Android app is free and available now for devices running the Android operating system version 1.6 or later."
You will have to upgrade to a newer version of Android before installing. When you do, grab the USAA app directly from the market. Use the Market Enabler (search for it) to get the app if you are outside the USA. Good luck.
Reviving this thread. I have a GSM Hero (U.K, unlocked, not Orange) running Android 2.1 and still cant find this USAA app in the market. Anyone know why?
** Update August 2011, I removed the attachment, it's a year old. The only correct way to do this from outside the US is to root, use Market Enabler, and get it in the Marketplace.
Here's the newest version of the app, attached below. (Removed)
First thing you need is a file browser to navigate to the .apk, once it's on your phone's memory card. Find a file browser in the market if you don't have one yet. You will have to enable installing third-party sources, your phone will prompt you if you haven't already. The problem with this method is that you can't update the app, and you have to trust my attachment as being safe.
A better way is to root your phone, and install Market Enabler (Google it). Requires root access, but it works perfectly. You can use it over wifi, 3G, whatever. You can use it to browse a lot of different markets. Plus, you can download the USAA app directly from the market, and update it that way, too.
Post a reply or PM me if that doesn't work out for you. Also, email USAA and ask them to make it available outside the US. I did, and they aren't ready to do it yet. Silly, considering who their members are. Just my opinion.

I agree with everything you said. Did you actually talk to USAA about that? Yeah, I went looking for Market Enabler etc, but you need root (as you said). I can't find a reasonable guide for rooting a stock 2.1 GSM Europen Hero (unbranded/unlocked). Is there one?

One thing I didn't think to mention yet is to try something like App Brain. I haven't used it yet but it's pretty popular on this and other android forums. I think you can set up an account on the website, load their app on your rooted or un-rooted phone, and load apps that way. Worth a try.

Thanks so much r4d14n7. I was having problems getting the app from the market as well. I live in Belgium.
But now that I got the app up and working, I tried to use [email protected] and it is telling me it cannot find my location. I have GPS and wifi on and both the maps application and my web browser on my vibrant are working. Any suggestions?
tpmaxwell2 I've never seen it try to get my location. I don't think it needs it. USAA is just limiting the download availability to the US. Once you get the .apk, anyone can use it. I'm using it no problem from the UK and it never switches on my GPS, nor is there any delay launching the app. It just comes right up. I posted an updated version in post #14, scroll up a little to see it. I've got that version running on both my rooted G1 and a stock, unrooted Desire from here in Europe. If you try it and still get location errors or other problems, post here again so we can figure out the problem.

On the version I just downloaded I cant even get into [email protected] without getting this error: "your location is required to use [email protected] please enable location services on your device and retry."
So I enabled wifi location and the app worked! Thanks so much!!
FYI...
I ran across this thread after trading in my iPhone 3gs for a HTC Desire HD. I went into the market to download the USAA app, and it couldn't be found. As suggested above, I installed market enabled, set as a t-mobile phone, then searched again. The USAA app showed up in the search, I installed it, and it works fine. BTW, I'm in the UK as well. Hope this helps for anyone else having the same problem.
Does anyone know anything about market enabler? From what I understand we may be able to use it to see/download market apps that we can't see with 2.1. I am not sure if it works. I installed it but I really don't know what settings to use or whatever. If anyone wants to test it out and see if it makes a difference, download attached.

Where did you get this file from?
I briefly read about market enabler on a hero thread somewhere. It sounds like people use this for better market access with cooked ROMS.
I got the actual .apk from here: http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/downloads/detail?name=MarketEnabler_3.0_beta.apk&can=2&q=
I did very little testing as I am not missing any apps specifically.
Seems like you may need root to use this one :\

So I updated to FroYo manually thanks to the methods posted here. I've nearly reinstalled all my apps with the exclusion of one; Square. I cannot find it in the market and thought maybe the dev pulled it, but it shows up in 2.1 and web-based market browsers, just not in 2.2. Anyone else experiencing this? Can I just force the apk onto the phone somehow?

Same here.. seems like the copy protected apps are having problems.
This is not root or something else regarded - everyone has these issues.

Great to hear I'm not alone, but being an early adopter can sometimes blow (in the BAD way) =\
Is this being discussed in another thread? I did a search prior to posting and came up empty
EDIT: Mods, thanks for moving this to the appropriate forum. I've seen mention of this issue appear in various threads, though no thread of it's own. Will wait for devs to catch up with 2.2
I reported the same problem on modaco last night... I'm sure google will enable de protected apps this week, just a slight oversight on their side.
i had same problem, just put them apk on your sd card and install it. if it is being a stubborn app like a certain few just copy/paste or move them to data/private-app and install from in there. should take care of it 4 u.
Same problem here (Tapatalk Pro and Extended Controls missing).
when you create an app you can set a max api level to support, or not.
applications that have that set won't show on newer devices.
exzeus, square, and a few others seem to have done it...
give them about a month or so and you should see them come around.

Having the same issue here. Wife's N1 can't find WeatherBug Elite, or the Helix Launcher in the market. Even after reboot.
Same. Paul actually fixes it in his roms by changing the Rom fingerprint. Some of the unofficial nexus updates he integrated did the same thing to protected apps. Once fingerprint was changed, it seemed to have done the magic. I'm guessing that he will do the same next week for froyo.
Same here my paid app wont show up which means I may be losing sales so I'm pissed right now
Yeah, so no MLB app at the moment... which makes me unhappy.

for the better part of a year, the USCC settings automatically load up (at least they always do for me) granted it takes about 15 minutes but they always get themselves in.
in-case you find yourself in the situation where it wont set itself,
a prime question i have- are you using Haret or NAND?
I have it on NAND. My internet works just the MMS is not. I know its not fully supported yet but I would at least like to know how to send them. I could care less about getting the, ( i get a ton of lame ones).

odd: i have been on NAND for almost a month i think and have not had an issue with MMS
when i was first playing around with android and Haret, there was plenty on PPC geeks here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=113441&page=3
i find this extremely weird. since the newer kernel builds, i have not had a problem. i used to have to configure the APN all the time but havent needed for a while.
when you go into wireless settings does it say t-mobile? or what are your current settings?
I've found some settings but I am unable to set my MCC and MCN (I'm using Haret.)
http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Carrier_network_settings#US_Cellular
and
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1746229&postcount=159
That seems to flush out the settings for the most part. I went to a US Cellular store to see if I could view the APN for the their recently released Android phone but you can't view it.

I am on Incbus 2.2 rsl10 with DZO 8-7-2010 240x320 nbh
