ooops Lost Root - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was running cy's 4.2.4, but I was having an issue with rotate.
I realized that the base Rom i was using was a sapphire rom (or at least that is what i was led to believe) I decided to go to cy's wiki and download the correct base image... signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip
I flashed this image and then when I tried to go back to recovery *poof* no recovery. (I was using the RA recovery) I downloaded telnet and tried it, no telnet.
I was going to reflash the RC29, but I was running the "Danger" SPL.
sooooooooo. Will I brick if I go back and install RC29?

Well. for anyone in the future, I can tell you that reflashing back to RC29 will NOT brick you when coming from Danger SPL.

If you have Danger SPL you could just flash back AMON Recovery from Fastboot, no need to root again.

the recovery gets replaced on reboot due the HTC image. You have to edit some scripts which a lot of people find harder than rerooting

G1 screen stuck! again!

hello, I made the following steps: (I try to flash Jachero 2.3.5)
1) Install RC29
2) Install recovery image 1.3.1
3) Flash latest radio: ota-radio 2.22.19.2.6I
4) Flash latest spl: 1.33.2005
... and when I try to reboot, the phone stay stuck in the G1 screen.
What I'm doing wrong ?
Do you have root? If you do which im hoping is true try reformating your sd card cuz sometimes whenyou flash different roms some of the old stuff stays even after reflashing
hope that helps
you might have a brick, after flashing the SPL you are supposed to have another sd card with another ROM(or the same ROM) on it to reflash, if not you can get a brick
Sounds like you just need to reload your rom on. Once you flash the spl you need to reflash your rom otherwise you will be stuck at the g1 screen due to the fact you don't have a rom loaded on your phone because the spl update overwrites your rom.
It's Normal, i went through the same thing. After installing the SPL you have to re flash your ROM. im no expert but what i did was:
Note: i added the cyanogen recovery image 1.3.1 and also i have ROOT,
I had Cyanogen 3.6 rom so i flashed the radio then spl. and got the g1 screen.
then i flashed 3.6 rom on again. (turn on phone with power+home, alt+w to wipe, alt+s to install)
After it loaded the cyanogen 3.6 so i checked the settings to make sure i had the right spl and radio. and then i just flashed the JACHero rom. just like i did with the Cyanogen rom.
Probably dont have to reflash the cyanogen rom i was just being careful.
Just mount your sdcard in recovery. Boot into recovery and press alt+x. Now type:
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
Remove the update.zip, and place your ROM of choice on the sdcard. Rename it to update.zip. In recovery console type "reboot recovery". Now wipe and flash away =]

Rooting and installing ROM question - please don't attack!

I know there are tons of guides around about rooting and what to do, I know how to do it and I have with my own phone. However, the guides are mixed, some a little old, some doing ADB which I didn't and I wanted to ask a simple few questions to check before I try to help someone else root their phone.
I'm thinking that this process will work but I'd really appreciate it if others could give me a definitive "yes" or "that'll brick it" type response.
Download Radio and SPL update from http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
Download Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery img
Flash to RC29
Copy recovery image to replace the default using terminal after accessing root.
Install Radio update from recovery.
Install SPL update recovery.
(optionally install a new firmware at this point too)
I know there are guides, I've read them, I know what they say but I don't know if this method would work as it is slightly different and uses the new Cyanogen recovery image whereas others link to an older recovery image and Cyanogen's would mean less steps.
you can you use cyanogen's recovery as the one you put on the phone to begin with. the easiest way to do that is to change its name to recovery.img so when you are in telnet just type the command as you normally would. you can install the radio and spl with cyanogen's recovery image just do not use the trackball, use the keyboard and home and back to reboot. also you have to have a rom after flashing "danger" spl because it wipes the current rom. any other questions. i know starting with cyanogen's recovery will work because i have done it on other people's phones.
Oh right, that's great to know and thanks for the heads-up on the need for a replacement ROM david. If it was my phone I wouldn't have asked but this is to give pointers to a friend so I wanted to be more cautious.
Seems like this would work then..
Downgrade to RC29, gain root access on boot up.
Install Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image and reboot to console.
Flash Radio
Flash SPL
Flash new ROM
Reboot
Is that it or would they need to reboot after flashing the radio then flash the SPL and new ROM? You say don't use the trackball, I know there are ALT+<key> shortcuts so I take it this is due to an issue before you have the new radio and SPL installed.
With regards to the trackball, how would you select one of the options for flashing "any zip on SD" if you can't scroll up and down?
there is a problem with the radio and spl updates not getting written when using the trackball. i have personally noticed it. also when flashing the spl or radio do not reboot from the recovery console as i know that will not write it as well here are the steps i use on someone elses phone.
download all files i need first.
downgrade to rc 29
substitute cyan's recovery for jf's recovery in the flash_image recovery recovery.img command for gaining root access. like i said just change the name of cyan's recovery to plain old "recovery.img" and no change in the commands typed will be needed.
flash radio
flash spl
flash rom
should be it.
How would you flash the three separate files in 1.4? Since it added the ability to flash any zip file if you don't change the name you can use that to pick what you want but I don't think you can select any item without using the trackball.
Or are you suggesting swapping the SD card out, putting each file on as update.zip one at a time and doing it that way?
you should be safe without renaming to update.zip but don't use the trackball to reboot. if it doesn't work just do the renaming to update.zip
When I tried using cyan's recovery in telnet it said it was read-only and I couldn't use it. Any idea why?
terminal su
I have a g1 w cupcake I formatted my 4g sd card did the alt s alt w and alt l went to the terminal emulator typed in su and got permission denied hellllllllp
Sounds like you missed a step before going to terminal.
"After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)"
After you do that bit you go to terminal and connect to localhost. It's worth pointing out that you won't see anything here to show it's worked. You go back to terminal and go from there.
This is a little out dated but it'll help you root. And it has pictures..

OK I'm in need of some help here and the faster the better as I'm talking to my friend via IM. So far we've downgraded to RC29, flashed Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image and updated the radio. Next is the SPL but when it's applied this error comes up.....
multiple firmware images
can't store hboot image
failure at line 1:write_hboot_image PACKAGE:hboot.img
Instalation aborted
We haven't gone any further yet, halp.
are you doing haykuro's spl or hard spl? try hard spl if it is not already on the phone.
It's the SPL from here which I believe is Haykuro's.
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
The current SPL will be whatever is stock, it's the first time it's been rooted.
try flashing the hard spl first then because i have always flashed it first. http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/HardSPL/update.zip
Alright. Is there any reason why you would want Haykuro's SPL over the Hard SPL?
so you can flash hero and rogers builds. i have haykuros spl but i have whenever rooted a phone i have always flashed the hard spl first, so try flashing it before flashing haykuros spl
Ah ok. I'll keep that in mind. thanks again david. We're gonna give that a go now.
let me know if it works out
OK we had to pop the SD card out to copy the Hard SPL over but now it won't recognise it back in the phone. Is it safe to reboot and go back to recovery after flashing the radio or is there another way to get it to see the card I'm forgetting?
power the phone down, insert the card, reboot into recovery, then flash the hard spl. if it doesn't recognize the card then nothing will happen when you try to flash

Not sure what i have done

Was running lastest Cm Rom & RA recovery 1.5.2.
Loaded into bootloader to check what Radio & SPL i was running.
Then phone started to update.
Now i'm back to stock G1 running firmware 1.0.
Do i need to go though the whole thing again like the first time i flash the rom??
please help.
Looks like you had DREAIMG.nbh at the root of your sd card and then hit the button to update it. Yeah, you are now at RC29 and must re-root and re-install cm.
Could be worse though.

Flashed myself into a corner...

So I was running OpenEclair v1.1.1, and since putting eclair on it, I've been unable to flash to any other rom. It goes through the wipe/install process, but when the device reboots I just get the rogers screen forever. I can then go back into recovery and re-flash OpenEclair to get it working again. I just got through all that hassle with rogers and made it out with my data and my root, so I was now attempting to fix this issue, and figured it couldn't hurt to upgrade my radio and try out amon ra's 1.5.2R image.
Unfortunately, I downgraded the SPL to 1.33.0009 right after trying to flash another ROM which didn't work, and performed the downgrade before I put a working ROM back on it (to use flashrec to get to amenra's), so at present I can only get into the SPL. My cyanogen1.4 recovery seems to be gone as I just get the original triangle ! logo (no menu or anything) when trying to start up in recovery mode.
Now what did I do, and how far back do I need to dig through tutorials to get back to a working rooted ROM? I'm not really sure what point I'm actually at, whether I still have root or not, or where to start.

Have you got a fastboot mode you can boot into? At least then you could fastboot boot a (non-peristent) recovery image to let you then restore from a nandroid backup...assuming you have some good backups either on the phone or on a PC that can be copied to the phone.
I should note you haven't said what kind of phone you have (G1 or Magic) or really provided anything resembling a complete set of relevant information about your phone and its current state. So it's hard to help.....even if this was the right forum...and it isn't.
Try formatting or using a new memory card.
I'm using a rogers Dream, I have a 2gb SD card with 32MB linux swap and 500MB ext3
HAD 1.33.2005 SPL, 1.4 cyanogen recovery image.
Now I have 1.33.0090, can't get into recovery.
Trying to boot normally brings me to a rogers screen.
I CAN get into fastboot, can I put cyanogen's recovery back on?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, where should I have posted?
Also, I don't know what information IS relevant to this, so please bear with my noobness.
Is there a recovery that will let me flash a ROM without changing the SPL back to 2005? Apparently if I can get the phone to boot up I should be able to use flashrec to upgrade the radio and SPL from the point I'm currently at.
Moved as not Android Development.
So I'm not sure what I did but the phone boots now...
Holy sh** it wasn't just me. I have this SAME problem. After flashing eclair and wiping and flashing another ROM it just stays at my splashscreen FOREVER. Even broke my nandroid, so I can't restore. How I fix mine everytime: Flash a rom OVER open eclair boot up... you'll probably get a sht load of force closes and all that but once you ge tto login screen just reboot into recovery and wipe and flash or nandroid restore then it should work.
If you guys are rogers, then you will most likely be ebi1, in which case, dont forget that you must also flash an ebi1 kernal to get past the boot screen.
So the phone booted into the original 1.5, I didnt realize the downgrade of my SPL flashed the ROM too. I put flashrec on and flashed Amen Ra's new recovery image and the rogers radio update, this is what I'm at now.
DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
CPLD-4
Radio-3.22.26.17
Trying to flash to a custom rom again still fails. I've tried cyanogenmod, super D, and openEclair, it doesn't seem to matter. Where can I get an ebi1 kernel to flash?
E: looking at your signature, it seems I've got the right radio, I'll try using that port tool.
That did the trick! I followed the steps in your signature, flashed a rom, then flashed the ebi1 kernel and my phone booted like a dream. Pun intended.
Edit: So I'm back to only being able to run openeclair. Flashing cyanogen and then briancrook's ebi1 kernel still only gives me the rogers screen. I am however able to flash back to openEclair to get access to a working device again.
Edit: openEclair is running like garbage, it keeps completely locking up the device, I haven't even been able to log into my gmail account to get my contacts back.
Okay, I've managed to get the rom running smoothly by wiping everything, flashing the non-ramhack version of openEclair 1.2.2, then flashing the 1.2.2 ebi1 kernel. Unfortunately for some reason when I do get into eclair, I have no phone app, no settings, and no contacts app, even tho the contacts still work if i try to message someone. This is infuriating.

cant flash danger spl

okay so i had to flash and downgrade back to RC29 from Froyo roms, i rooted, then upgraded my Radio, and also flashed Hard SPL. but when i try to flash Danger SPL it wont change, i check my boot loader and it still keeps saying hard spl is still installed.

Before Danger You must need to Flash your RADIO first and then reboot and try flashing Danger.

It is obviously smarter than you.
DO NOT FLASH DEATHSPL!!!! There is NO BENEFIT to it.
Use 1.33.2003. Be safe -- don't brick yourself.
If you want deathspl's partition mapping, use this instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
