Hi, there is absolutely no way your phone could be damaged. It's not actually clocking the CPU over it's native frequency, simply reclocking it. Also the voltage is left unchanged. To save battery the manufacturer (HTC) set the frequency much lower, but clearly that won't be an issue to you.

I have try this with 528Mhz, and i can say it's not very good for the battery.
only 528 Mhz - > max. 1 day
with dynamic CPU clock ~ 2 days
I use 528 max 376 min, its pretty good.

I was thinking about installing SetCPU but I have heard stories of it not working very well on the Captivate. Does anyone use this, and if so what kind of battery life improvement are you seeing? Post config settings too please!
Its working just fine. I have a live background so my battery usage isnt very great so long as the screen is on. I had some trouble with the system being slow to respond every time I turned the screen back on when I had "screen off" profile set to max 200 and min 100. then it dawned on me that it would always just underclock to 100 I set it to max 200 and min 200 when the screen is off and also started using launcher pro and it is no longer sluggish at all.
This has saved me a gratuitous amount of battery life when the phone is idle.

Thanks for these, I was looking for a some decent settings. Mine were close to that to start, but I had no idea what I was doing, haha
I had some stability problems with it that I am now fairly certain are related to adjusting the polling frequency in advanced settings. After disabling setting advanced settings on boot, and a reboot, it has not caused the phone to hang once. I am also fairly sure that the phone boots with the conservative governor enabled and min/max frequencies set to 100MHz and 1GHz, even without SetCPU - so the main benefit here is profiles to force lower clocks with screen off, or during overheat or low battery.
CPU throttles itself. Any effects of setCPU is placebo effect
Err if you set the clocks yourself, you can produce a difference depending on what it's catered towards. I'm sure if I set the max clock to 200 (assuming the app works) for all situations there will be a difference.
Does the stock ROM have a perflock like the EVO that we need to disable?
Also, does the stock ROM automatically underclock at times, or???
I've now verified after clearing user data, the stock firmware already sets the conservative governor and allows it the full range of frequencies supported by the CPU. Only benefit from SetCPU should be profiles - reduce max clock when hot or low battery, that sort of thing.

This now gives my phone life of about 2 days with moderate use (1 hour calls, 1 hour browsing and another 30-45 mins of using apps that need screen on like games, etc)

One thing u got to keep in mind, CPU scales up when woken from low speeds (like when u set for 200 n this takes a second or two). After some R&D i realized 400 MHz when sleeping is optimal with hardly noticeable lag.

well, i have tried playing heavy games like asphalt 5, dungeon hunter, assasin's creed... these all games seemed to work with no lag even at 400 MHz when my battery was less than 40. Most apps I have or used or saw were very comfortable even at 400 MHz. But with multiple apps open, sometimes there was lag, so i set the max at 800 MHz, instead of 1 GHz.
Also, I set my connection to EDGE from 3G. This helped reduce phone from getting heated up with long calls.
I tried using this app myself but uninstalled it after a week. While I'm sure there was some underlying cause, it made my phone never wake up from sleep mode when it turned off.
Honestly thou, I know several android phone owners with s lot of phones That didn't see any real change in their battery life as s result. And based on my experiences, I'd say stay away from it.

**Stock is 245-245. 160 as a minimum seems to produce a LOT of wait time from when the call is coming in to when the phone lights up. More than 245 seems to whack the battery.
Keep in mind, when you wake up your phone, this Screen Off SetCPU Profile is active for at least a SECOND or two. The problem is that if you have your maximum at 245, you experience BAD lag trying to pull the lock bar down. At 245-480, the maximum is high enough that a) the lock bar pulls down as smoothly as a stock Eris, and b) even if SetCPU takes a couple of seconds to change the profile, at least you're at 480mhz for the first scrolling of the screen left/right (so you don't embarass yourself in front of iphone users). Anything higher than 480mhz is a different voltage. Almost the whole time your phone is 'Screen Off', it will be operating at 245 anyway. So 480 is a good setup for it to jump up when a call comes in (to play the ringtone and show the picture a little faster, and for the lock screen bar to pull down smoothly, and the first second of SenseUI to be smooth enough, until your phone changes the profile to your <100% profile.
Battery <100% 245-806
** Zanfur's take on how this processor clocks up/down its speeds will lend itself to a general wisdom that 768mhz isn't really slower than 806mhz, and that in instances of high variability of clock speed (aka you have some Power Save bias in SetCPU keeping it lower/higher at random, or you're doing very intermittent tasks), the processor rests at 768mhz more quickly, and wastes less time/'effort' changing speeds. Changing to 806 is another 'step' altogether, where 245 to 528 is one 'step', and that to 768 is another 'step'. Going to 806 is absolutely another step yet after that (which means your phone responds a LITTLE slower because it has one more step to 'throttle' up to). BUT, if you're doing a dedicated task, such as running a Linpack benchmark (which is a terrible benchmark anyway) your phone will move faster at 806, or if you're playing a game, or playing a video... generally the processor will stick at one speed (and not have to 'step' up or down), so 806 is faster. I clock friends' phones at 768 to avoid problems, keep it clean, etc etc. Some people put the minimum here at 160mhz, but I feel that this is too low (and another 'step', just like 806 is over 768, 160 is another step down from 245).

** I keep the minimum here HIGHER than when the phone is on battery, because I'm less concerned about how much energy it's consuming, and having a minimum of 480 makes the phone very snappy no matter what, from the second you touch it
Overheating > 48C 122-528
** Clock speed here matters a LOT less than just getting your phone out of the heat. This phone doesn't overheat because it's overclocked, it overheats because you run it at an overclocked speed for a long time. MOST overheating instances are from wireless tethering and from broken charging systems (that keep trying to charge the battery and generate a lot of heat). The 'Failsafe' profile here provides a 'notification' option which I HIGHLY recommend.
My ex-gf's Eris actually CAUGHT FIRE, as in it looked like it was a zippo, right above the volume buttons. It used to overheat EVERY NIGHT that it was on the charger, excessively, so hot that you couldn't touch it. For a month or two it did this, actually, and caused no real damage to the phone. Since the night of the Flame (you can actually see the melted plastic and even on the outer case - she has a blue snap shell case on it that is melted as well), the phone has NOT overheated even one time on the charger. (Sorry for the story, it was a waste of time).
The point is that, the first time it happened, her phone System sound was on Silent, and she DIDN'T hear the notification that her phone was overheating. Apparently it doesn't matter (or she's very lucky her phone isn't damaged in terms of its operation!) how much it overheats for some people, but I like to have it warn me it's getting close to 50C. The notification's the important part there (so u can cool your eris), not the clock speed.
@pkopalek I like your settings you posted with a full description of each. I changed my settings to yours and give it a day or so and will report a status update as to performance quality
I've never lagged at 160mhz =p but that could just be my phones/ roms.

my audio skips and it won't wake up when in a call at 160mhz. I keep mine at 245mhz minimum to keep phone working smoothly.
What does the different prioritys mean? Is that like what one its.focused on more?

How do you guys clock your CPU so high? Whenever I try anything over 729 bad stuff happens. If I put it on 748 it lags and if i try 768 it freezes up. You guys are all using the droid eris right? What ROMs and kernels are you running? I'm on Kaosfroyo

When a processor is made at the factory, it will always have flaws in it. The chip is tested to see what frequency it is stable at. So that is the speed that is stamped on the chip and the frequency that it is set at to operate for the consumer and not have any problems. When you overclock a processor, you are bypassing the frequency that the chip as been deemed to be stable at. After that, there is no set speed that your processor can handle, because each one is different according to the flaws it might have.
So in short (what I'm trying to say), the processor in your phone just can't handle those without causing problems. That's why when you overclock it, it's kind of a trial-and-error process to see what speed you can get out of it, but be careful, because too high can cause permanent damage.

I also go 600mhz max when the screen is off.
I don't see much need for the rest, but I'm curious to see what others add.

Pretty nice app, although I can't seem to be able to go above 1ghz in cognition 2.3B2... But I have set to.
Temp>60 400mgz (I live in the desert)
Temp>50 800mhz(totally nessicary)

lowest is 100mhz... would NOT recommend setting MAXCPU on anything to that!!
It will idle at 100, but if it can't clock up, you'll never be able to use it. 400 is functional for call/txt.
I never have heat issues with my Captivate, and I don't do any oc-ing/uv-ing. I personally use:
Screen off: Max 200, Min 100, Scaling Conservative, Priority 100
Charging/Full: Max 100, Min 400, Scaling Performance, Priority 75
Battery<101%: Max 800, Min 100, Scaling Conservative, Priority 50
With Darky's ROM and Speedmod K12N kernel, 800MHz cap gives plenty of performance. 200MHz while the screen is off is just fine for playing music in PowerAMP with headset controls.

This is the setting that I have been using, the good thing is it has failsafe profile as well to prevent overheating
Profiles are listed according to order (high priority to low)
Main setting 528 max 245 min
Screen off 245 max 122min (245 max to allow background apps to function properly)

Charging 537 max 245 min
Battery<40% 480 max 245 min
u can set your own max speed, but not advised to go beyond 576
245 is set as minimum when awake because that is the original minimum clockspeed of the cpu
remember to check 'set on boot' and 'enable profile' setting
change them to your liking n have fun!

Keep in mind, the best settings may be none at all.
SetCPU does take a few MB of available RAM - a precious commodity on the G1. I've been going without it using Farmatito's kernels - it defaults to 528 and 245, I think. Only drop about 1% an hour on standby.

Good idea! It may be wise to remove the SetCPU to get more available RAM if the battery won't drop fast without SetCPU.

I was bored in school today so I've written a governor concept idea for quad cores. I'm not a dev AT ALL (for now at least, i'm studying many different stuff, hardware / code related too).
I have no idea if this is possible or if this is clever but I wanted to share it anway. If it gives idea to a developer, that's totally worth it, otherwise, well... I had fun doing it
It's called Progressive.
Progressive
The name of the governor says all. The idea behind it is to be «*progressive*». It means it doesn't unleash the full power when it's not needed. It goes progressively higher in freq with more cores. This should make the phone cooler and the battery better. The delay (3 sec ) is just a number, not sure this is really nice. Also, I'm not sure how the S4 handles temperature.
Max freq 1.5 Ghz
Min freq 384 Mhz
Screen off
=> 384-918 Mhz // not too low frequency to avoid reboot
Screen on without touching since 3 sec // always check after 3 seconds for changing the state
=> 384-1134 Mhz only one core online
Screen on touched
=> 594-1134 Mhz two cores online // bump the min_freq to avoid keyboard lag and to add a bit of butter
Screen on touched with a medium load of task // not sure how quantify this
=> 594 Mhz – 1.5Ghz two cores online
Screen on touched with a high load of task // i.e. Games
=> 702 Mhz – 1.5 Mhz four cores online // max power
We also need a thermal protection to avoid any damage, this should do the trick
If the temp is >= 80°C
=> Two cores online max_freq 1134 Mhz until it reaches 70 °C // not sure about the temp, this can be adjusted
If the temps is >=70°C
=> Let 4 cores being possibly online but lower the max_freq to 1134 Mhz

I'm not sure how the ondemand governor on nexus 4 works. So I can't really answer, it's really a noob idea that poped into my head today

3 seconds is way too long for the CPU to ramp up (just a matter of tweaking, though). you'd get more lag than you save battery.
mpdecision ramps the cpu to its maximum frequency as soon as a touch input is detected (normally only 2 cores until a certain threshold is reached), so yours should save a bit of power during smaller workloads.
also, if the touch input is released, it clocks the active cores down to 1.02 GHz for a bit before disabling them when not needed.
after all, it seems like a more conservative interactive governor with active mpdecision. could be nice for saving battery while retaining good performance.
it could be a viable choice for those who go for battery life over performance. :good:
