hey guys, finally switched over to at&t from tmobile, so i FINALLY have 3G! and to boot, down here in miami, we have HSDPA! so anyways, i wanted to know what are some ways you guys use it? as in streaming media, podcasts, etc.. any ideas would be great, cuz i'm brand new to the world of 800 kbs/sec internet!
Do yourself a favor and download a program called "advanced configuration tool". In the "buttons" area, put a button 5 called 3G.
Personally, I keep 3G turned off, unless I want to look up something on the web.
I get a lot better battery life out of 2G (Edge) than 3G, which eats up the battery. Only downshot is that if you are on the phone, you can't receive email
at the same time. Lots of other tweaks in the advanced configuration tool, you'll have to ask others on XDA what works best.
Hmm what to use it for? The same you'd do with EDGE but faster?
Personally I don't consider 3G as useful on the phone itself, but rather when tethering with the laptop.
ok so im getting the nook this afternoon (if ups comes through) and ive been thinking one big compromise i made over the galaxy tab was 3g. I would love to use this in places other than the ones with wifi. I have an HTC heroC and the wireless card does not support being a wireless hotspot, so i am forced to use apps like barnacle wifi teather but the speeds are horrible. Now that we have BT working on the nook (thx devs!) could i use PDA net's "Bluetooth teather" option to tie my nook to my phones 3g?
The bluetooth isn't working on the nook. (the hacked roms have it barely working)
The only thing you can do is connect it thru wifi. I've got a Motorola Cliq and can turn my phone into a wifi hot spot that my nook can access.

Actually this is completely incorrect. CM7 roms have it working relatively well. I cann get about 6 feet of distance with it now so if your holding your nook and your phones in your pocket I dont see why it wouldn't work.

HI,
Sounds like some people have a non-user friendly method of getting Bluetooth
tethering running from Nook Color running CM7 to cell phone via bluetooth.
Haven't tried it myself yet. See these threads in developer section:

Hope this helps.

Not to mention that the absolute last way CyanogenMod should be referred to is "hacked."
I'm still on CM7 19 and bluetooth is working well! However, I have not gotten BT tethering working at all (haven't tried much, bcuz wifi works well for me). Wondering why you get such bad speeds via WiFi tether? I have an OG Droid and I get good speeds.
I suggest trying out Wifi tether first and see how it works.
I'm hoping someone can answer my related question here about my phone.
I currently have the Samsung Moment, and no matter what ROM I use for my NC, I can't get it to see my tethered connection in the Available Networks.
My NC can see my friend's tethered connection on his HTC Touch Pro 2, and Nexus One, so I have a feeling it's got something to do with my phone.
Anyone with experience with the Samsung Moment--do you have any input as to a ROM that might make this work?
Thanks in advance.

Most of the NC ROMS do not support Ad-hoc wifi networks right off the bat. If you're not sure if you have an ad-hoc network or not, try and tether your phone to your computer and you should be able to tell on there. If it is an ad-hoc issue, follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868354
I too have a HTC HeroC and both it and my Nook are running CM7, AOSP build for the phone and Phiremods build for the nook. I have no problem using Wireless Tether to use my phone as a hotspot, I do so just about every day at work to brows the internet on lunch, speeds have been fine, can watch Youtube stuff and listen to internet radio just fine.
I use Wifi Tethering for Root Users on my Epic and it works great with my NC.
I did a search and only found one reference to this in a post. So dont flame on if I missed it.
I can connect to my network fine at home over the WiFi but if I leave the cellular connection on it is terribly slow. If I go into airplane mode and then turn on the WIFI separately its blazing fast. It appears the cellular wants to take priority over the WiFi. Has anyone else experienced this or found what causes it. Below are my phone specs and network.
HD7 with WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular enabled.
Netgear wireless N
I completely agree with this statement btw.
In my basement my "wifi" connection is HORRIBLY slow on my hd7. Many, and I repeat MANY times I feel as though i'm still using my 3G connection instead of the wifi as it should.
Just wanted to comment on this, i'll search later on, maybe i'll find something else.
just turn on cellular connection when you need it , and turn off when don't need.(when u have wifi nearby)
Thats what I do but it shouldn't work like that. There should be WiFi priority when available for data services.
If ur wifi signal is too weak , it can be so.

I have the same phone as you, from TMOUS, and I have noticed the same effect, cellular over-riding the wifi, and I think that the cellular is just set as the default... and I think that is the way it is intended, by the carrier(s), because then we would use our minutes/data up quicker then otherwise... I have noticed when using wifi, and not on airplane mode, that minutes/data are consumed at a MUCH quicker rate, than when on wifi w/airplane mode on... and thanks for pointing this out, I may not have payed as much attention otherwise... I am leaving TMOUS, maybe going to Simple Mobile, or something like that, and I will be keeping a much closer eye on it now... right now, with no carrier, I am using my phone strictly on wifi and it is pretty damn fast, and I only have an 802.11G router, not an 802.11N router like yours... which only makes me want an N router even worse... I'll post any more info as it appears, and thanks again!...
@ artmodeler At work I can understand a week signal but not at my house. I am about 10 feet away from the router which is located on my desk. Also the connection manager in the settings is showing full bars.
@ mlongue1 Yeah it works amazingly fast on my WiFi under airplane mode. I use Super Tube for my you tube client and theres little if any pausing to buffer large videos. Not so much when the cellular connection is enabled.
Anyone have a working root wifi tether working on the Droid 4 yet?
WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta11 works great for me
nm (see above post)
FoxFi works great, and doesnt require root. I use it all the time. Only thing different from the one posted above is it allows BT tether also, but doesnt tell you when someone logs onto your phone.

So you have 4G sharing with that??
Yes you will have 4G speeds. In my experience with the Google project one which IMO is the best, if your on the move and your tethering from tower to tower and you lose 4G signal, its hard for your phone to re-connect to 4G. It just stays on 3G until you toggle airplane mode then restart tethering. My DROID 2 did the same thing. If 3G signal got really low, it would go to the edge network and wouldn't go back to 3G sometimes.

My personal preference is PDAnet, but for wireless, I second the google projects one.
Does anyone know whether it does active masking like PDAnet? One thing I like about PDAnet is that it is supposed to mask the fact that you are tethering, and it doesn't seem to trip the built-in hotspot indicator (which makes me nervous).
I recently purchased a brand new XT1103 64gb N6 and was hopeful to make this my daily driver, but having nothing but issues with this phone ever since I've started using it...in fact, it has been so horrible I went back to the LG G4 that I was using before the N6...my issues:
#1. Wifi calling - I have gotten this feature to work at home, but it won't work if I put the phone in airplane mode and connect to a wifi network. For example, on Delta flights that have internet they offer free tmobile texting...by following the directions and prompts, it says that I'm connected, but when I try to send a text it tells me to enable cellular network. On my LG G4, if I do the same procedure, it enables the wifi calling feature and displays the wifi calling icon and I'm able to send/receive texts. On the N6, this feature does not work. I have yet to see any discussion on XDA about using the N6 to text inflight on Delta flights. In addition, I was recently in Paris and tried to enable a wifi call and it gave me the same error...."please enable cellular network to make a call"...when I take the phone out of airplane mode and enable wifi calling (when connected to the hotel wifi), it thinks for a period of time then will allow a wifi call, but only if the cellular network is enabled...never in airplane mode with just wifi enabled. Is there something that is wrong with the N6 in regards to wifi calling? On my LG G4, if I put my phone in airplane mode and turn on the wifi, it will enable wifi calling if I connect to a wireless network. Overseas it's imperative that I'm using a wifi call since TMO charges 20 cents/min on the cell network, but having to enable the cellular network forces me to initiate a call before I see that it's making a wifi call. I am not happy about the wifi calling implementation on the N6 and wish it was more like every other TMO phone I have used in the past...
#2. Signal quality and battery life - as noted in many posts, the signal is horrible and continually bounces around. I've followed several recommendations and have done the following when I received the phone - opened the box, flashed TMO 5.1.1 rom and rebooted with my TMO sim...phone did several updates, then updated to Marshmallow...signal was extremely weak anywhere I used the phone (I live in central Iowa and they only have HSPA+) TMO has not turned on LTE in my area of Iowa...I went to Chicago and experienced the same issues...fast battery drain and poor signal....I flashed Pure Nexus 6.0 and TMO 5.1.1 radio and experienced the same issues so instead of getting a headache messing with the phone, I just went to a local tmo store and got a new sim chip for my LG G4 and have been using it without issue for the last couple of days...It worked much better in Paris and maintained a better cell signal in Paris and I was able to make several wifi calls in airplane mode at the hotel there...
Can anyone share their thoughts and help me improve my experience with this phone? I really like the camera, screen, and feel of the N6, but I can't have a phone with poor signal, poor battery, and faulty wifi calling. Thanks in advance. Nick
wifi calling has never worked for me in airplane mode.. is it supposed to, i dont think so? and it sounds like you live in a small city or in the country? it sounds like it when youre talking about your signal. i live in nyc, and am on tmobile, and i am always connected to lte. my signal never changes, except on one spot on a highway near the ocean. other than that, my signal is perfect. anyways, you can flash and try different n6 radios. some work better for some and worse for others. and you dont need root to flash radios, but you do need to use fastboot.

I had the same issue using GoGo on the first flight.
At home, make a few calls when connected to WiFi. In settings/More, Switch from WiFi preferred to Cellular preferred, and go back to home (clicking ok as needed). Then, switch back to Wi-Fi preferred, (toggle the on/off slider at the top as well). Make a call again while connected to WiFi (make sure it shows WiFi calling).
Now, on your next flight, (in airplane mode, enable WiFi) connect to the gogo internet (use the initial splash page to select T-Mo texting/WiFi, captcha etc). Then, try texting - it should work. (it did for me)
I haven't tried WiFi calling from overseas, so can't comment - but I know I'd just use hangouts (or skype) to call.
I'll give that a try when I get home from my trip...I did try making a few wifi calls at home, but I didn't cycle the wifi calling feature...I will roll back the update to the stock TMO 5.1.1 and see how it works...
Quick question, is there a way to not install the 6.0 OTA from tmo? I'm guessing that I can just ignore it...N
