MLIGN 3.0 MMS/SMS Issues?? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else using MLIGN hero 3.0? Using it currently and all is appearing to go well except for a few issues. SMS get out of chronological order, and even incoming SMS occasionally has the wrong timestamp on the msg ( sometimes even further in the future than it actually is ) Also, last night I was having issues getting MMS. This happens using 3rd party apps and the default msg app. I really thought by now we would have a perfect HERO but I guess this one is as close as it has gotten to there so far. Anyone else having this issue? Or know a rom that is nearly fully functional for hero? I cannot accept my msgs being all out of order, or never receiving them at all.

Too bad the damn search function is limited to 4 characters.
Theres a laundry list of Roms with SMS/MMS issues. Most have unique fixes.
Best advice is to wipe , reformat your SD card , and start from scratch with said ROM. That way you eliminate most of the "problem is on your end" situations.
Too many roms get knocked out of wack for no apparent reason. Its almost impossible to search for a solution with a 4 character limit.
From what I gather there arent any "issueless" Hero roms. Ive been looking for one but too many major annoyances like you mentioned.

I think my phone is bugged, any help?

Yes this is the development thread, and all I really have is a problem, but I think it's something only solvable by you devs.
My phones sms has been completely Effing up lately.
I will get the notification up in the bar, and I can pull that down and read into the message, but if I open Handcent or the default app the text won't show up and will not be there.
So reasonably I stopped using Handcent, and Message widget and all sorts or things like that, wiped my phone, cleared the partition, flashed a new rom. Different firmwares [1.6 and the new open eclair]
But nothing really seems to help or work, apparenlty mms has been failing a lot which I know is more so on Tmobile's end then it is my phone but idk whats up, tonight I get this new Android notification
"com.android.mms a large number of sms messages are being send. select "ok" to continue of "cancel" to stop sending"
whenever I hit send, I haven't yet rebooted to see if it persists but it's a pain.
Is there any device log or collection I can submit so someone can look into it, possibly a bug? Virus? Somethin' stupid like that?
Thanks.
p.s. and my inbox isn't full or anything ridiculous like 1000+ messages, I've got about less than 50 currently, and when I said stopped using Handcent and MessageWidget, I mean uninstalled.
This happened to me on rare occasions while I was using Handcent. But it doesn't happen when I use the default messaging app. So I assumed it was due to handcent. Not quite sure why you're getting the other problems though... =/
This happened to me as well when I changed to a 2.1 rom. I chose to go back to Dwangs 1.6 rom until the 2.1 roms have been completely stable.
Hey try using ChompSMS. I think its better than Handcent SMS

That doesn't sound good at all.
Have you checked with t-mobile to see if you are sending a stupid amount of text messages? It could be someone is sending spam messages via your phone or something. It could explain why you are unable to receive messages.
I think you are from the government, trying to find out whom on here knows how to subvert there android espionage. I for one will state to you officer, that I know nothing about this, and am stupid to the whole concept of bugs.
PS Do not try to trace my post, as both me and my computer are wearing tinfoil hats (with the shiny side out).
In all reality, one trick I learned as a teenager to check if your phone may be bugged, is to find an old business that still uses a switchboard phone system (this was hard in the early 90's, and may be impossible now) and phone them. If your phone was bugged, then they would see two lines coming in as one and become quite confused.
Whoa guys, by "bugged" I meant viruses not I'm being spied on haha.
It's occured on the 2.1 build Open Eclair
and a Cyan 1.6 build.
With and without using alternative applications for messaging.
I got sick and tired of it so I decided to go back to my most solid rom I've ever used.
A Soul Life 1.5 build, and I haven't had any troubles yet.
When I preformed the nandroid backup however it still tried to act like my sd card was partitioned and the market was buggy for a few but the cache is cleared up and it's all good now.

ROM question....

I have tried a few ROMs here for my Hero and am not finding anything for what I need. Maybe I haven't looked enough but I have looked.
I have tried the Blue Froyo and Darch's 2.8 and neither let me play any of the music I have on my sdcard in a file called Music. On the stock ROM music player they show up just fine.
I also am having an issue with both not letting me use my voice mail properly, I have found the VVM zip and this only solves part of the issue for me. I still don't get proper notification of new messages. Instead I am getting two or more messages from 9016 for each new voice mail.
Any one point me towards a ROM that helps with both of these? Non-sense preferred but not a must. Sorry for being lazy but there are so many ROMs here and trying them all just to test these two things out would be very time consuming and asking these questions in all threads would be very redundant.

If you mean the nightly, I have and maybe I'm too picky because it isn't themed like the blue froyo is. It also has these two issues I'm asking about so that won't help.
Anyone else have a suggestion for me?
You may need to reformat your SD card. There's really no reason it wouldn't play files from a "Music" folder unless it's having trouble reading the SD card somehow. Try reformatting the SD card (after backing up everything on it) and then reload all the files on it and try again.
As for the voicemail thing, on any AOSP-based ROM (DD, CM) those notifications from 9016 won't go away....it's kinda how android tells the Sprint VVM that a voicemail has been received, but to my knowledge no one has figured out how to disable those texts from coming in. Using Handcent SMS (an app from the market), you can supposedly blacklist the 9016 number but I'm not sure if that's a complete fix because I've never tried it myself. Most or even all Sense-based ROMs don't get that text.

Thanx I'll try that when I get home as I'm at work right now. Strange that all sense roms I've tried see my music fine but not these two which of course are my favorites. Came from a moment so sense is weird to me.
The voicemail thing I guess I'll learn to live with as I'm reserving an epic tomorrow @ RS.

Edit: ever have one of those moments where you say to yourself "why didn't I think of that" ? Well I should have but I feel so stupid I can't even think enough to do that right now...formating the sdcard did the trick....thanx again
Bump...so one of the 9016 messages I got for vvm looks like a command to turn on a notification. Just curious if this has been looked into. Maybe we could get this to work by tweaking the command or maybe the command isn't being ran because the receiving app needs tweaking?

I have seen that one, I am kinda partial to the blue froyo theme but I noticed that the nightly isn't themed. I will try that one out for theming the nightly, thanks. I've played with theming on another phone but haven't quite figured it out yet on the Hero or I'd just make one myself.

[Q] Not receiving SMS

Hey guys, i have a pretty serious problem with SMS messaging. It seems like my Milestone refuses to receive SMS messages. I've been using FroyoMOD and now i have Cyanogen 7 RC3 from kabaldan. With both of them i've experienced this issue. And it's always the same.. after like a month or so from when i flash the ROM..it's happening again. It's really annoying and people are yelling at me for ignoring them So, if anybody knows what's the deal or has experienced the same issue.. i'll be more than glad if you had any suggestions. For now i pretty much think it might be something like kernel-related or whatever.. i don't really know
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.
install advanced task killer, open the sms app, go to advance task killer and uncheck the sms app...with this setting you can receive sms...
forgot to mention that i use handcent or chomp sms..not the stock app. that also might be the problem. i tried rebooting and i don't think i have any task killer that kills my sms app. unless the task killer is integrated w/ the ROM. Anyway, gonna try this.
Got the same problem here and it's driving me crazy.
I've taken a look at the log and you can clearly see the sms arriving, because android is starting the sms app. But it get's killed before it can safe the sms. I believe it's due to a memory shortage. I've tried several different memory management settings and also tried to fix the sms app in memory by adjusting the oom_adj value (see thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012330)
But nothing realy helped for long. I still loose many SMS also Whatsapp mostly does not notify me about new messages. Push mail works most of the times. Gtalk notifications I'd say work only in 50% of all cases. I'll probably downgrade to CM6. The milestone simply has not enough memory for Gingerbread.
Is your data memory low?
there is a bug when getting lower than ~20mb of free memory,
(last time I ran in that problem was in 2.1, so i'm not sure if releavent to 2.2 and up)
Yes, it's quite low and can possibly be below 20mb at some times. When I look at it it's usually around 30 Mb. I can get more free memory by adjusting the memory manager settings, but that only means it kills background apps even more agressively, or so I understand it.

Handcent seems impossible to run even on stock telus froyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12675946&postcount=13
I'm going to reinstall it and test with minfree values of 6, 8, 26, 16, 16, 32.
Hancent is always in the 4th or 5th slot so maybe that will work.
well i just flashed latest MIUI, sent sms to my number and received it.. i think i had SuperCharged minfree from you zeppelinrox. well i guess it's always the same: i flash new ROM, it works and after some time it stops. what the hell.. the thing is i never used stock messaging app, that might be the cause.
I use supercharge script with aggressive 2...moreover i use advance task killer...i didn't lose any sms...before that sometimes I didnt receive any sms...you have to unselect your app for sms(stock one, handcent, chompsms)...I use stock sms app and everything is working...
Its seems you'be got me wrong, I mean applications data memory, not device ram.

You're right. I got you wrong. I've got plenty of application memory. I've had low applications data memory a few month ago and it took me days to realize taht this causes the phone not to receive any sms. But as soon as you free up memory all SMS seem to be coming through.

by the way, What do you mean by "I've taken a look at the log"?
by the way, just got another problem... seems like everytime i flash MIUI ROM (and maybe any other ROM, idk) and recover my messages from backup with SMS Backup & Restore, the phone sends out by itself like 5 messages always to the same people. It happened like 3 times so far.. and it's pretty much possible that i flashed it 3 times.. but i think that might be more like the sms backup-related issue. The 5 msgs seem to have something like hasn't-been-sent-yet flag or whatever.. seriously, i just feel like throwing the phone out the window right now.
Maybe it's application issue?
I've been using "SMS Backup+" for long awhile (probably since november when I first flashed MIUI)
and never ran into problem.

Is used the Debuger from the Android SDK. When you connect your phone to the computer you can log almost everything with it in realtime.
Btw. I've just migrated to MIUI to try if SMS arrive here more reliably. But I'm not yet sure I like the user interface. It's rather different from CM7.

You need to install the Android SDK from Google. Since you know adb I guess you allready have it. In the SDK there's a file called ddms.bat. That starts the debugger.
Same stuff here...
I´ve had similar issues relating the sms thingy. I´m going to try that app killer thing to see how it goes.

well i have an observation. after i stopped using all sms backup apps, the problem is gone. and by sms backup app i mean those that backup to gmail, not to sdcard. if you have an app that checks for new sms's and automatically backes them up, then get rid of it.. if you need an one time backup, use SMS Backup & Restore.
like i said, getting rid of automatic sms backup apps did the trick for me.

Universal bug on 3.0 messaging app

For the past couple weeks, I've left the comforts of CyanogenMod to venture into the realm of 2.1/3.0 sense roms since they seemed to be close to stable to make one of them my daily rom. Anyway, on EVERY single one I tested, there was a bug in the 3.0 messaging app. Every once in awhile, I would receive a text postmarked an hour later than it actually was. The issue is that when I replied, it would put my response right above the text I just received since my outgoing text would be the correct time. So if this happened a few times in a row, the flow of the conversation would be jumbled. I'm not sure how this happened so I tested it out with my Google Voice account. I'm not sure if this was coincidence or not, but it seemed like it happened either right after turning off the screen or while I was using the phone. I'm guessing it has something to do with how the messaging app deals with the phone's internal clock or something since it's a universal issue and not just found on a couple roms. But I'm not a amazing coder like you guys on here so I have no idea. Hopefully someone can get this fixed.
The roms I've used thus far (the bug is in all of them):
Optimized Shift 2.4 (my main rom)
Synergy RC2
Nil's Business GingerSense 3.0 v1.3
Nil's Business GingerSense 2.1/3.0 v2.3
Incredible 2 ReMix RLS 2.2
Kingdom Stock GingerSense RLS2
Kingdom Rewind 3D RLS3
I posted it here instead of the Q&A because I figured developers should know about this (or whoever it is that ported the 3.0 messaging app) so it can be fixed.
Multiple people have experienced this, and cyanogenmod has had some releases that have done this as well. There is a market app that fixes it, I don't recall the name but it's somewhere along the lines of smsfix or something.

Were you in central time zone? I never experienced the bug until I traveled from Virginia Beach -> Memphis. Durr, the clock changed on its own. It was on the Pure Speed shift ROM, I reported the bug and basically I was alone 0.0 :'(
Another bug I've noticed is that ever since Sense 2.0, if you have a contact linked to Facebook, their number appears in EVERY. SINGLE. TEXT. Ex:
Bill (M +17575552019): Sure
I call this a bug because, I know who I'm texting, I don't need their number plastered on every single one of their messages, at the very least, HTC needs to move the number to the top. There is no... "sense" in having their number in every text. It also happens if you put email information in contacts. I understand HTC just wants us to know that we know which number we're texting, fair nuff, but who emails with the messaging app?! And on top of that, I've tried de-linking contacts from Friendstream, only for the messaging app to keep showing their number in all their texts whenever I start texting them again -.-
Its amazing that I seem to be the only one who notices this ugly bug.
It seems that no matter what, incoming messages are stamped with Eastern Time .... I was in PST and messages were 3 hours different and now I have moved to CST and messages are 1 hour off. SMS Time Fix will fix this but it does suck that it requires a separate app to do so ....

[Q] Facebook App Zero Hero Sense 3.5 Latest

The only thing I cant get to work is the facebook app, is there a work around? on the good side does not have a ring delay and appears to run smooth. Best Current ROM
ummm,,,if your facebook doesnt work you should post it in the zero development thread so matt, dastin and flash know first hand about it,,,that way if there is a problem with it they can fix it,,,and yes,,,it is an awesome rom...laater
The Facebook app isn't working for me or anyone else. Right now there's no fix and probably won't be any time soon as it's low priority. Shame because it's been a very solid rom but I like my Facebook
We do know of the problem. Its the very next thing I'm working on. So stay tuned.

I don't know if anybody else mentioned it but messaging is a little off... i'm not receiving all my the txts. I would say about 20% i missed when I had this roms because my friends called me saying y I haven't answered to the txts but in reality I never got em. But other than that this rom is very good!!! Good job devs
Interesting
I will attemp to replicate this only because I have not heard about it...
R1 Release
If I was a girl rom, I would be all over this zerohero rom,,,I was able to remove all system apps I did not require but found it made it slugish, so I used tools like rom toolbox and task managers to try and speed an already fast rom, it slowed it down again, I then started from scatch with a clean reinstall, again it was fast but as time went on it got slugish during sync, which was almost all the time, under accounts & sync there are a few hidden thing within gmail, facebook i did not need synced, I unchecked almost all options cause I only want facebook sense, gmail emails, and weather, it did make a difference, I would leave the rom as is, after all it is fast enough,
ive gotten use to having a non sense rom.
im not a social head so i don't need sense.
widgets and less resource usage are your friends for a snappy hero
Not everyone wants or likes the skinny of non sense based roms.
I myself just get bored sometimes and like to try what's new out there.
The Hero has been a versatile device and I've been amazed what devs have been throwing at it.

So when is your build gonna come out? Like to see you put something out better than what we've done..... Oh that's right your not a developer. Before I even touched it, it would barely make a call let alone a text or MMS. Be grateful for what we have. Because soon here we won't have any updated Roms at all. Who are ya gonna put down then?
I've posted many options to speed that Rom up. If you choose to not use them and fill it up with apps, widgets, and all around crap, then it's your own fault.
