[HOW TO] SEARCH and FIND your ANSWER EZ! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

after a MILLION posts of " i've searched everywhere and i've found no answer to my problem! PLZ HLP ME AHHH!!"
this is how you search effectively...before having to add another thread and make it even harder to find things.
on any page of any forum u can click on the search pulldown menu at the top of the page.
instead of typing in the search box, click on BUILT IN FORUM SEARCH. on the next page first thing is to go to the middle of the page on the left hand side and click on "show results as" POSTS" not threads
next type in the keywords or username and any other options. use as little as possible at first use and as simple keywords as possible, i.e. without ...ing ..ed..s 's ly, or any or that stuff just root words.
THREAD SEARCH
If you know you are in the right thread, dont forget to use the THREAD SEARCH right of center on the top of the first post on the page
YOU WILL FIND YOUR ANSWER QUICK!!! happy searching and I HOPE THIS HELPS!!!
If anyone has any other suggestions please add and help out!! Happy Hacking!!
Also Help By Rating Threads, Reporting out of place or offensive posts, and searching.
i searched a little before doing this, but only went as far as the stickies.

what is the point of this....
the audience you want to read this will not search for it, nor will this become a sticky, because if you read the stickies themselves, you would know this has been said. even if it does, you know noobs wont read it

A lot of information without use

well i just wanna suggest something about the format of this forum. why is it not an organized forum as some other gsm forums are. It must be categorized according to different topics as software or hardware related etc. Also the search mechanism is not very good. whenever we try to search abt some topic it gives the result as some 2**** topics found and hense very difficuilt to find things of ur interest and that is why forum is getting too much messy day by day..............
So any solution to this problem is awaited
Biggest problem in boards are ppl like U. They don't bother looking for the right forum for their post. Often they double-post or even cross-post!
They galantly overlook the offered search function. Even if they try them (once), they claim, they couldn't find anything at all. When the search function is told to combine the search words (AND- instead of OR-search) it's very useful.
Preview is a thing posters like don't know how to use. They wonder what certain functions (e.g. mark up possibilities) are for, but if there's no button "DON'T CLICK ME! I MIGHT TELL YA SOMETHING ABOUT MARK UP!", they don't care whether they used it correct or not.

Is there a way to customize to separate sounds for the sliding motion

I read that there are ways to customize the sound effect. But it only gives you an option for one. Is there a way that you can have two different sounds one for opening and one for closing?
click search at the top and then type in
slider sound
should be the first one on the list.
@chumleyEX - it's now the second one on the list after you typed the search string into your post
Anyway, here's a nicely presented explanation - read the first post for the "how to" and the rest of the thread for everyone else's favourite sounds - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1392712
....and yeah, the new search - he worky mighty fine
Enjoy,
Mark.

which is why one should always SEARCH FIRST before posting a new thread, or posting in already EXISTING threads. starting new threads screws up the search.
btw Mark, this is not aimed at you

Help with searching the forum

Is there a way to search for a phrase or is it only individual words? Each time I search it finds post with any of the words I'm searching for and it doesn't really help that much...
If you click the Search at the very top its a Google search. So put the phrase "in quotes"
one other useful tip is to use the minus "-" sign to exclude terms that you don't want to be included in your search.

Thanks, I didn't see the search feature at the top; I was using the one at the top of each thread.

Help Searching...Please!

First, I am new here and I really appreciate the work that has been done to get the this wealth of information online.
I really try to search and search for information before I ask because I know that asking a redundant question can get me soaked in gasoline and set on fire.
There must be some special skill or knowledge of searching that I do not have...and want to have.
Case in point: I want to know how to tell if my GPS in turned on and if so, how to manually turn it off. I tried searching for "turn GPS off"=no results, "Gps off"=no results. Then I searched for simply "GPS"=no results. Now I know that there are hundreds of posts here with the term GPS in them, Why does the search not find them??
A little frustrated here...
Any help on how to effectively use the search on this site would be greatly appreciated....Thank you!
I don't think there's any (easy) way to tell - GPStest or the HTC GPS Tool may help - but.....
Your GPS is only on if you're running a program that actively makes use of it - e.g. Tomtom, iGO, CoPilot etc....they will activate GPS when you start them and disable it when you close them.
EDIT: The search works just fine - in the "topmost brown coloured menu", it says "Search" - I just entered "GPS" in the box and hit search and got pages of hits......sure you didn't click "Search this thread" ???
HTH,
Mark.

Thanks for the Gps info but my REAL question was about how to use the search tool.
I used "Search this FORUM" to search the "Kaiser>Kaiser grneral" forum only. Using the "Search" button above does a Google search in the entire xda-developers forum yielding hundreds of results on ALL devices, not just Kaiser.
Still need to know how to search the Kaiser-general forum only and get results.
I always go to google.com and type something along this lines " xda kaiser gps" ( or whatever youre looking for ) Seems to work most times for me

Right at the top when you click on the Search button under the box where you type your search string it says "or use the built in forum search"click on that and it;ll give you options to search in specific forums of your choice
I went to the Kaiser>kaiser-General forum, selected Search from the top brown strip, clicked "use the built-in forum search", entered GPS, selected search entire post, from the "search in forum(s)" box i select Kaiser>Kaiser general, click search and I get "Sorry no matches". Try it for yourself and tell me what I am doing wrong.

You're not doing anything wrong. I just tried searching 'this forum' for "GPS" and also got no results. Then I tried a few other common 3-letter acronyms, e.g. "HTC", "CAB" and "DOS", all of which clearly appear in the titles of recent posts. In all cases no results were returned.
So it looks like a deficiency in the search functionality of the forum software. I then googled this and found that it's a common complaint.
The recommended solution is to add a wildcard character to the search string - e.g. "GPS*".
The built-in site search is terrible, and the site admins know it. That is why they added the ability to search XDA using the Google search engine.
Searching for "GPS" with the forum search will produce no results because the vBulletin search ignores words shorter than 4 characters. If you want to narrow down your results using Google, use add "Kaiser" to all of your searches.
Thanks, that is the exact information that I need to know.
Hi ho, Hi ho, it's off to search I go............

Using the search bar???

A message to every one. Remember we have a wonderful search bar at the top of every page. Not the device one near control panel. But if you scroll to the top of this or any other thread or section. Once you get to know it well you can search keywords and such within a given rom or such. For fixes, issues, even some Etas. I always recommend using this search function before postings. It helps keep the threads a bit cleaner??????
