Urgent help using console please - life depends on it! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My G1 refuses to boot all the way up. It hangs with a black screen after the initial Android logo.
I can get into the recovery mode (RA v1.3.2) and I have tried a Nandroid restore, but get the message:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid argument)
E:Can't mount SDCARD:/nandroid/
I've also tried to flash a fresh image from a rom on the sdcard, but get a similar message, ie. Can't mount
I'm running Dwang's rom 1.12
I've tried wiping my ext partition (I had to do this when I first flashed this rom, although I don't understand what that does), but no luck.
I seriously, seriously NEED to get this phone back in a working state in the next couple of hours, I'm expecting a really important call. I don't care about my apps or data, I just need the phone/text functions sorted asap.
I can get into the console via recovery - can someone suggest some magic to enable me to nandroid restore or flash?
I am at work, and have no card reader, and no ability to download files or roms or anything.
Can someone PLEASE help me?

I hope my sdcard isn't going bad, I only just shelled out for this class 6 8GB card about 6wks ago :-(
Since I got home last night, I took the card out and got it into a card reader on the computer - Windows XP told me the card was not formatted, and I had to format/repartition before I could reflash a ROM.
Any ideas what might've caused this? The only thing that I can think of is that earlier on yesterday I was swapping videos wit friends via bluetooth, and one of the videos wouldn't play - I don't know whether this could've corrupted my card?

If you had an excessive amount of writes and a poor quality SDcard, that could have contributed but its most likely a defective card if it happened only after 6 weeks. Get a program to fully scan the SDcard to see if it can find bad sectors to make sure that it is indeed the SDcard or some other problem.

SD card damaged with 4.0.3.1 but not 4.0.2

I'm getting a SD card damaged error after going from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3.1. The laptop reads the card fine so I know the card is ok. What's going on here?
Nandroiding back to 4.0.2 makes the problem go away.
Thanks for the info I had the same exact thing happen to me.
Did not think it was the rom but I knew there was no way all my microsd cards where messed up.
Weird thing the first one got somehow wiped to ext3 without me requesting it.
Going back to 3.8.1 let u know if got mine fixed or not.
Still tough might switch to jf again or other roms from haykuro.
Be right back as soon as I get home in 3hrs
I was getting this on one of Cyans roms before especially when unplugged from PC then restart and it would be fine. Haven't had any problems since so I'm sorry to say I don't know what it is, but at least it's not permanent haha.
Just tried 4.04 and same thing happens.
Changing the SD card seems to work but why is just THAT card affected? I'm going to back up the data on the card and try a few things. I'll let you know what happens.
sucks I had to start from scratch had to use a regenerator to fix the sdcard.
Basically phone nor pc would pick up past partitions. Used a corporate software from Paragon and Norton to undelete or try to recover deleted partitions. And now I was able to recover some of the files there are some that have a I/O read error so no luck with those kinda like a data redundency check failure.
Then used a regenerator to wipe the whole drive and recreate it. Wierd thing is that the droid did not read it until I reverted back to old cyanogen 3.8.1
now I'm back debating if to update to the newest 4.0.4 but scared now.
well I already lost most of the data what else can I lose right? lol
Im telling you it is a great investment to have Paragon Hard Disk Manager for business. At least that is what saved me this time.
Well for me. the ext3 partition works fine. All my app2sd works good. But my fat32 parition doesn't work (but works on other builds)
Well, it works now.
See whenever I mounted the SD card to Windows Vista, it said there was problems with the SD card and Windows wanted to scan it and fix errors. Well knowing the card worked fine, I always said no to the scan.
Well since I was having problems with 4.0.3.1 and 4.0.4 I decided to let Window scan and fix it, and it seemed to actually fix it. So there.
yeah i had the same issue also i thought it was cause i was trying to add an old theme to 4.03.1 but it wasnt...i did a wipe repaired the extfiles then added 4.02 again went straight to 4.03.1 through cm updater and it was fine..so if anyone has the same issues try to wipe first and see if that helps
Wipe did not fix problem.
I have the same problem. I tried a wipe through the recovery and with the
Code:
mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
cd /system/sd
rm -r *
command. It still says the SD card is damaged. Restore with Nandroid, and everything is fine. I think I will try a fresh partition (I currently only have two partitions). I will try to get back after I reformat to get the three partitions.

broken SD card??? PLEASEEEE HELP!!!!!!

hey everyone, im not usually quick to ask for help but i am absolutely frustrated and stuck.
trust me ive searched and read everything i need to and its just not working for me
i have a 8gb micro sd class 6 card.... everything was fine and working perfect until i did a nandroid backup
then my card started having errors when repairing ext filesystems
so i put the card in my computer and formatted it.
then i deleted and repartitioned the card
then i did the command in the recovery console to fix the filesystem error
reflashed the radio image
none of that is working for me
i have another 4gb class 4 card and its working perfect for me
but ever since my 8gb did a nandroid backup, the roms wont load at all and i get stuck in a boot loop with the second htc splash screen
PLEASE HELP THIS IS DRIVING ME MAD!!!! thanks a bunch in advance!!
im using jacxhero v2.1
and i use cyan 1.4 recovery img
After you partition in Recovery, you don't need to fix filesystems... just exit Parted and type upgrade_fs in recovery console to upgrade to ext3.

this is a fault with the rom, the nandroid backup shouldnt cause a bootloop.
did you make sure the partitions are in this order?: FAT32, ext, linux swap?
can you see the card on your pc?
yes i did those 3 in order, ive done it several different times
i make sure that i do the upgrade_fs to convert to ext3
everything goes well when i partition and i can see the sd card in my computer. but for some reason i cant get past the splash screen with this memory card... my other one is working perfect, and so was this one until i did the backup thing
when i flash, it finishes and i reboot and get stuck after the HERO splash screen, the first time it shows the little android guy and then the screen goes black and i see the same spash screen again but with no android
what happens if i repair filesystems after i repartitioned??

it wont hurt to repair it, but it seems that the problem is more likely the hero rom. something is causing the rom to bootloop. did you wipe before you flashed? try that if you havent.
also, set up adb using the stickys in this thread, then use
Code:
adb logcat
when it starts to boot. that way i can see whats happening thats causing it to bootloop
yes i definately wipe before flashing. i still think its the sd card since my other sd card works with the same rom
ill try out the abd thing... ive seen posts about it but never really read into it.
thanks for the advice! ill be right back with the results
right now that i tried again, i cant get passed the tmobile g1 screen... seems to be stuck =[
the card was formatted and partitioned and then i booted (the rom is already flashed on here, i just took out my 4gb card and switched it out for this one so i shouldnt need to reflash should i?
now i deleted all partitions in recovery mode and rebooted....
i got both splash screens hero with android and then the htc splash... now it went to a black screen and has been like this for about 5 or 6 minutes
with my 4gb card it shows the two splash screens and then the black screen comes on for no more than 30 seconds and then the phone loads

well the hero builds put some apps and configuration files on the ext partition. if your 4gb card has those on it, then you probably wont have to.
Can you see the partitions on your computer?

if your using windows, format the whole card to FAT32 and put it in your card reader to see if it shows up as a removable drive.
what are you using to partition the card? Try flashing another rom that doesnt need extra partitions (such as cyanogen) and see if that rom can see your card as well.
if it doesnt detect it, then your card may have gone bad
=[ looks like i got a bad card....
i appreciate you two helping me out! wish it could have worked... i guess im just gonna pick up a new card
this rom wont even load when i dont have an SD card in it... and when the phone is loaded with my 4gb card, if i take it out, the phone freezes

like i said, important system files are on the sd card. you cant remove the sd card without crashing it. if you want a rom that you can use without an sd card, use JF or Cyanogen's rom. The hero roms have too much stuff to fit it all in the internal memory of the phone
what are those important files on the sd card?
are you talking about the partitions or something else?
if its something else like hidden files or something, then maybe thats what i need to fix my 8gb

they arent hidden, but thats what i was trying to say. after youve formatted your card, wipe and reflash the update. it will put those files on your card automatically.
they are located on your ext partition.
if you use adb, you can see them in
/system/sd/app_s
to get it to work, put the freshly partitioned sdcard into the phone.
press home+power to get to recovery. wipe the phone. flash the update (jachero2.1)
when it installs, it will find the ext partition and do it manually

HELP SD card not recognized

Ok this is extremely annoying. I got the g1 and rooted with 1 click rooting cyanogen 4.0.4 rom. It was so simple and worked BTW. Later I used the hardspl so that I could do apps to sd. I have had the phone for 7 months and have used custom roms since I’ve gotten it.
Following this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535232 I tried to partition my 8g sandisk micro sd card. Now I probably destroyed my sd card (Nothing to big). And I am stuck at the g1 screen (pretty big). When ever I try to flash a different rom with a different or even the same rom I get an error acout the sd card “E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (No such file or directory) E: Can't mount SDCARD:"
With around 8 hours of digging around on forums I have decided that I might have to get a replacement unless someone could help me revert with access that I have to the recovery to allow my sd cards to be recognized.
Note: I didn’t install the Cyanogen ROM - Download v4.0.2 or Cyanogen Recovery 1.4 - Download as I had a better one. Hince my problem, and did use the apps2sd.apk. Things didn’t go wrong until I typed in “upgrade_fs” . After doing so my phone would not boot up after I restarted it.
Something tells me that I changed something in the phone to allow apps to sd partition 2 and I need to be changed back to the default, as I can’t even flash another rom to fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
willl your phone boot when you remove the sdcard
My phone will not boot after removing the sd card.
One thing that I forgot to mention above is. While using the phone after my uncessful attemp to partition my sdcard, the top notification bar was displaying "The SD card is blank or using an unsupported file system." After messing with it a bit i decided to reboot but it froze. Being impatient I pulled the battery from the back of the phone.
Looks as if files are missing from the Cyanogen 4.0.4 rom. As when I type “mount sdcard” is displays “mount: mouting /dev/block/mmcblkop1 on /sdcard failed: No such file or directory” Sounds like I am missing mmcblkop1 from my phone now? Apps2sd.apk doesn’t change this file does it? I'm also wondering if you change a file to look somewhere else for the partition part of the sd card? And if so how would you tell it to look for the default?
Tried this "flash_image recovery /sdcard/update-cm-4.0.4-signed.zip" and it displayed this "usage: flash_image [-d] partition file.img" does this delete the partition of the sd card or what is this referring to?
I think you 'bricked' your sd card.
Try format it with SD Formatter.
Worked for me.
Because you did use App2SD, you have erased app data, so setting up your G1 from scratch is your best option.
Ok first of all using that guide to install apps2sd on cyanogen's rom is what messed up your phone. Cyanogen has clear warnings about this in his thread. Now that the damage is done lets fix it. Can you boot into recovery by holding home and pressing power? Is there an option to flash any zip file?
After rereading your post i see that you don't have recovery 1.4.
You need to do step 4 HERE when you're done do step 5 to install cm-recovery-1.4
After trying different things with the console as I posted above the phone allowed me to install the Cyanogen 4.0.4 from the 2gb sd card. For some reason the phone would not allow me to do this before. As it wouldn't recognize the sd card, or that it had 1 for that matter. What would cause this problem? Maybe a faulty sd card? But I swapped to the 2 gb sd card that came with the phone and tried this numerous times before. Glitch? Why work now? I'm so lost.
I'm so glad that this worked this time though..... another save for this g1. Its taken a licking and it keeps ticking. I have dropped it 14 feet from the top of a railcar. I have crippled it 3 times now as it wouldn't allow me to get past the g1 screen. A simple flash from the sd card allowed me fix that problem. I have also dropped it in water. It was submerged for around 6 seconds in a leather carrying case that clips on your belt. Fast thinking allowed me to remove it from the water, pull the back off, and pull out the battery. I allowed it to dry in the car for around 4 hours and then put it in a bag full of those "do not eat" packets that come in most shoes for 24 hrs. Thanks to Walmart for the donation. Probably the best phone that I have ever gotten.
Well looking over the history of the phone I understand now why it may have done this to me. However it shows that by being persistent you can figure out most things. I appreciate all who have made these guides that make my g1 ownership so much fun.
Now go to get that apps2sd working. Another method probably.
I did have recovery 1.4 installed at the time the g1 quit working. I never downgraded and was able to access the recovery the entire time. But I kept getting the error “E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (No such file or directory) E: Can't mount SDCARD:"
I did change the sd card at this point but had the same results.
As you may have noticed i didn't read Cyanogen thread discussing this.
I found the guide for apps 2 sd here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535232 and read through it. Sounded easy enough and well tried. With failure of course.
I was under the inpression that apps2sd already is included in cyanogen 4.0.4 all i needed is to partition my sd card.

Unfortunately that guide is still a sticky and someone uses it at least once a week and we end up with your problem every week. ivanmmj added a warning to the guide a few mins ago. I'm glad you are working now. You are correct about apps2sd being included in cyanogen roms. In post 3 HERE I've made a script that will partition your sdcard for you.

[Q] Need priceless photos off internal SD. Recovery says can't mount SDCard??

So my phone got stuck at boot screen. Bell says I get full replacement, but I'm gonna lose all the data. I have the internal full of children opening gifts on Christmas.
Reading a million forums. Tried to learn enough to flash the firmware with odin. Tried flashing the stock JH2 back to phone. Phone boots to recovery and says problem mounting SD.
Can ADB be used to connect to phone in "Download mode" to Pull the media???
PLEASE PLEASE help?????
after odin is done the phone reboots to:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(no such file or derectory)
E:copy_dbdata_media: Can't mount SDCARD:\copy default media content failed
I'm still desperately trying to get my files. I've read about 1254 more threads. Found this one about flashing back to eclair...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797302
So far I tried JH2, JL2, JM8 and still no luck. Anybody out there got any ideas?? links to help or compassionate remarks?
Phone no boot need remove files inside...is this really an impossibility??
Argh.... it never happens when the internal has useless data aye.
You tried flashing a firmware using all three files (PDA, modem, CSC) with repartition?
P.s. apologies if you have tried all this, just trying to establish a baseline
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
From what i understand the internal SD card has 2 main partitions. One that's about 2 gigs for Android OS and apps and the remainder of the card stores media and such. (I think that's correct) So I've tried carefully to just poke around the OS area of the SD card in hopes that I can get it to boot up just once to connect and get the pictures off it. I'm fairly sure that "re-partition" would erase the whole card.
I'm starting to consider ripping this damn phone apart and physically removing the internal SD, but I'm not even sure if that is possible or helpful.

That won't work...the 'internal SD' is not a SD card in the traditional sense (standard, mini, micro) - it's a physical chip (IC) that's soldered on to the mainboard.
I haven't heard of anyone being able to pull data off a phone that's got the mmcblk0p1 failure. The best I've heard is of people repartitioning/formating the sd memory in order to get it working again - but of course, that would mean losing all data...sorry...
As what EarlZ said, repartition won't touch the part of the SD dedicated to user data. I've flashed via Odin countless of times and never once did my internal SD get wiped with a repartition so why not flash to something like JPU with repartition using 512 pit file?.
Edit: and reading the error seems to tell me it's a problem in the 2GB portion of the internal SD where the system and such get stored. So yes, do try a repartition. I guarantee you that your user data will be safe. The only time it would get wiped is if you actually choose to format that partition like how one does in Windows or through the settings. Odin flash won't do this most definitely.
If that fails...
Also take a look at this...
This guy seemed to have been lucky and got is supposed dead I9000m SGS working again. Here's his procedure:

Worth a shot.
Well hot damn them are some good replies. I was brave enough to try re-partition and a few mod roms like in the thread mention as well as a few thread techniques I read. I must have read about 4622 threads by now. Still no luck for me I really really appreciate the help.
Thinkin I might just go wrap up the kids christmas presents tonight while they sleep and just make em open them all again hahaha.
In the mean time I'll just keep readin and keep tryin. Learned a lot at least.
So....
Original problem = boot cycle
-I flash back to JH2 and at least to phone gets to recovery mode and i see the mmcblk0p1 error. progress
-try flashing to the newer JL2 and it goes back to boot cycle
-try flashing back to JH2 to get recover mode again and still boot cycle
-read a million forums about trying mod roms and other techniques and still boot cycle
-get encouraged that re-partition will only affect OS side of SD card and try a million things again. Still boot cycle
-decide to go back to the JK4 that i started on and seems to be the root of all evil and then BAM recovery mode returns and this time it even recognized the device
-any attempt to connect with device either with kies or windows explorer causes PC crash
-phone even recognized by ADB I "think" this program could be used to try and "pull" media from the device but that's just a guess and I don't know how to use it
-the error now is not mmcblk0p1 instead: E:Can't/b mount /devlock/stl10 which could mean something or could be just the same and it leads me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788850
-try flash techniques in the thread and back to boot cycle
-try going back to the JK4 so I have recovery mode again and still boot cycle. progress gone
I'm gonna flash this damn thing again and again until the damn copper lights on fire
Wow i Admire you man.Listen i dont know much about ADB but i think i saw a post of someone that literally pushed files in his internal card with it,and i clearly remember him saying he could browse through his phone although its card was burned. If so then a single copy would be possible.Since i cant help more, you better start reading on how to use it and find basic commands for it.
I wish you the best man!!!!
Have you tried this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901772
I seem to be able to get that running on my dead GT-i9000M. It has a file browser so maybe you can see if your pictures are even there/accessible. Also has a USB Mass Storage option but it didn't seem to work for me.
However, phone is still dead and needs to go in for repairs/replacement.
OK so now I'm f&*#ed
Tried JP1 method from this stupid page
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-android-2-2-on-galaxy-s
and now I don't have download mode anymore.
somebody plz just shoot me
EDIT: Ok excuse this panic post. I still had connection to ADB and a simple "adb reboot download" command got me back.
Wow thank JDROM. This recovery mode really looks promising. I got the file manager working but I can't seem to find any directories with DCIM/ label or any media. Sure looks like this could help me somehow. Might only have half the SD mounted or something. I'll have to play around and read some more, but I gotta say this is the best progress I made in a while.
THanks SO much
Edit: Found in File manager to run partition manager and formating options show up. In here there is mounting options to /mnt/sdcard or /mnt/external_sd except when I try it returns the E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 to /mnt/sdcard with parameters vfat(null) So hmmmm....
Edit: Also learned a bit more about ADB commands to possibly ""Adb pull /sdcard/DCIM"" if I ever get it mounted.
Well that's it for me. The quest is over. I admit defeat. Memories Lost. Game Over
That sucks man...i had a bunch of stuff on my phone that i lost when the internal died....mine took out the external sdcard i had in it too - so all my backups were destroyed as well!
Moral of story: Save important crap on something like dropbox!
Some dev should make a program that automatically syncs certain directories (like pictures, or backup folders) to dropbox. I'd donate for that.....

[Q] External sd card won't mount

After every time I restart my phone and it turns back on my phone will never automatically mount my sd card, so I have to go into setting and manually mount it myself which normally isn't a problem but every once in a while my phone won't let me mount it, when i click on the mount sd card button, it goes to another screen that has a title Reset? and the whole screen is blank. I have reset the phone, taken the sd card out, I have done everything that has normally worked in the past to get it to remount but this time nothing will work. Has anyone else had this problem, or any suggestions how to fix it?
Thanks

Sorry, no help for you, but I have the same problem here. Started just a few days ago. I haven't made any changes to my settings that I know of that could have caused it. Anyone have any suggestions for getting back the ability to mount the SD card?
Yup, me too, just rooted my phone trying to get cifs manager (cifs.ko) installed and working with my win7 machine (no luck w/that yet either)... since then the external sdcard unmounts from time to time and restarting the phone requires a manual mount
Fixed?
What I had to do was basically move my entire sd card on to my computer then I formatted my sd card put only my necessary things back on there and it fixed it, stupid but it got it to mount right away...oh and I formatted it though the phone erase function not using the computer, so I didn't have to take the sd card out again.
Tried the erase all, but no luck... I suspect it's related to installing busybox... tried unistalling that without success too... would installing another ROM likely fix that, and if so any recommendations?
Talking about an HTC vivid
I'm having the same issue, except it partially mounts the external card (only shows a couple of folders but not the /music folder with 2100 songs along with 4-5 other folders)...Only way I have been able to fix it is to connect it to the PC as a disk drive then disconnect it, then all the folders "reappear".
If I put the card in my tablet I have no issues.
I tried a new card but the problem is still there.
Any help or suggestions?

After every time I restart my phone and it turns back on my phone will never automatically mount my sd card, so I have to go into setting and manually mount it myself which normally isn't a problem but every once in a while my phone won't let me mount it, when i click on the mount sd card button, it goes to another screen that has a title Reset? and the whole screen is blank. I have reset the phone, taken the sd card out, I have done everything that has normally worked in the past to get it to remount but this time nothing will work. Has anyone else had this problem, or any suggestions how to fix it?
Thanks

Good Evening OP,
I had a problem like this earlier today. I finally rooted and flashed a new rom (PACman). I used CWM as my recovery, and apparently this is part of the issue. You need to use TWRP for your recovery instead. Their website is at http://teamw.in/project/twrp they have instructions located there on how to install TWRP onto your Vivid. I used the fastboot method, then changed the settings in the 'Mount' tab to mount SD Cart, Internal and Use External SD. Worked like a charm. And since it's touch based no more using the volume rockers and power button... Hope this helps! By the way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2109140 had the initial lead to install TWRP instead of CWM.
