BACKGROUND:
Many people (including me) can't flash ROM from microSD card
AIM:
To help identify possible causes of the flashing errors with the microSD card method
METHODS:
Method: A trial and error test was conducted on my X1
Variables: 1) Brand: Sandisk, Kingston and unbranded cards 2) Capacity: 1 GB and 2 GB cards 3) Format: FAT32 or non-FAT32 (other format)
Endpoints: Flash successful or Flash not successful
Total cards tested: 6
Write lock: released
RESULTS:
FLASH NOT SUCCESSFUL: All cards when non-FAT32 formatted
FLASH NOT SUCCESSFUL: All cards when brand = Kingston
FLASH SUCCESSFUL: All FAT32 cards from Sandisk brand or unbranded
CONCLUSIONS:
Seems like most of the problems reported could be due to 1) non-FAT32 format or B) Kingston brand cards
COMMENTS:
Conlcusions can not be extrapolated to all Kingston cards because I tested only two Kingston cards and both were 2GB. Possible confusing factors could be considered
PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE to add more input
I have never withnessed any problem.
1GB 2GB 6GB 8GB 16GB..

Any of these was kingston ??
Works like a charm on 8gb microSDHC from Sandisk.
Always use sandisk, best memcards on the market atm.

Yours is Kingston "SDHC" 8GB
My cards are "normal" SD 2GB
There could be a difference...
MORE USER EXPERIENCES PLEASE ???
what about the various errors? "no image file" appears to be default - could be worth loggin these too.
No luck with the 2G Sandisk MicroSD that came with my phone.
Only tried FAT32, but tried renaming card (and not) too - just in case.

Did you format to FAT32 ?? (PS: choose "default block size)
@ gtrab - connection lagging. tried editing original message when saw already posted, so changed it - oh the web we weave
what do you mean by choose default "block size"?
@gtrab - OK penny just dropped - you refer to default allocation size of card - cool, will try next time as did not even open that drop down option.
cheers.

- Remove micro SD card from phone
(I assume you have a SD slot or a USB card reader on your PC)- Insert the card with SD adapter on your PC
- Open Windows File Explorer
- All drives are shown on "My PC"
- Right click over the SD card drive (mine is "E:")
- Choose "format"
- A dialog box pops up (see attachment, mine is spanish but should give you an idea)
- From "file system" choose "FAT32"
- From "block size" choose "default block size"
- DONT CHECK THE "QUICK FORMAT BOX
If this doesn't work, then try ANOTHER SD card from another brand
no prob with kingston 8 gb card
transcend 8gb class 6 doesnt work, gonna buy another tomorrow..
I have a 4GB Kingston Micro SDHC and that has never once let me perform an upgrade via the SD flash method.
Also I tend to have serious problems getting UC to work at all, and when it does start to work the process is never completed successfully. I just end up manually installing everything.
Have been planning on getting a Scandisk card for a while, might have to invest before my next rom upgrade!
Kingston
here's my experience:
My phone is an X1i that comes with a 2GB Kingston.
Ive used this card for flashing for 5 times already and
never encountered any errors.
i used to always format my card to fat32 with the default allocation size
everytime im going to flash a new rom. all succesful with no hang-ups.
heres whats labeled in front of my card:
SD-CO2G JAPAN
SDC/2GB 35
so, my card is not a SDHC?
Before moving forward, I kindly request all the gene users to kindly post all your doubts regarding storage cards in this thread only.
Hi everyone.i have made this thread for all those gene user who are confused to choose storage cards best suitable for gene.
★ Wellll...first of all let me make it straight forward that gene is expandable upto 32GB.
★ You can use 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB cards on any of the ROMs.
★ HTC Gene has a 201MHz processor. So,make sure before you directly start dumping your files in your flash card, make sure you categorize your files in specific folders. Also, take care that alot of files are not dumped in a single folder.Otherwise, the device goes slow as in case of opening file explorer/windows.
★All these cards can be well used with W.M.5,W.M.6,W.M.6.1,W.M.6.1 and W.M.6.5.1 respectively. So no need to fear about compatibility issues.

Storage Cards Formats :
krazy_about_technology said:
Storage wise, fat32 is best, you will get 20% more storage than FAT. But if you regularly backup your SD Card, you will see that while copying multiple files, the speed will be slower than FAT. that is the tradeoff. For regular use, FAT32 works fine, but use it only with cards >= 4 GB in size. Otherwise you wont gain much benefit. This is also because only cards >=4GB come in SDHC format. SDHC handles FAT32 better than pure SD.
One more thing that you will have to remember while using FAT32 on SD card, while flashing, you will have to remove the card, otherwise, flashing process wont start. This is because FAT32 is the filesystem used for SDCard flashing and Gene gets stuck on reading SDCard.
NTFS is not supported natively on Windows Mobile and i dont know if a pluggable file system driver exists.
So overall :
For SDHC cards >=4GB : Use FAT32 and remove it while flashing.Bit Slow speed while copying/moving large no of files but good storage.
For SD Cards < 4Gb : Use FAT, no need to remove while flashing. Good speed in file copy/ move operations but 10-20% less space. FAT32 on < 4GB cards makes them crawl.
I hope this will help you in choosing the right file system.

Tutorial :Flashing Rom Using Your Storage Card

When you want to flash your windows mobile device with a new rom directly from a storage card, you need to format that storage card as FAT32, so the device can access the rom-image-file on the storage card at boot time.
To format the card to FAT32 u can use this app
or if u need something cheaper than read below
under the USB2PC in ypur PPC start menu select disk drive
then plug in the USB cable and then in the PC u will see something like this
* Go to ‘My Computer’, right click the USB thumbdrive and select ‘Format’
* Choose the ‘FAT32’ file system and hit ‘START’
AFTER FORMATTING
rename RUU_Siged.nbh to GENEIMG.nbh, Put GENEIMG.nbh on SD-CARD (root).
Charge your device to 100%!
Insert SD-Card in Gene, press AND HOLD "Camera" button, and do soft-reset.
If you see white screen with "Reading SD content":
Release "Camera" button, wait, and when countdown (start from 10s) in left-bottom corner of screen is appear, press "Power" button.
Flashing will begin, and takes approximately 8 minutes.
After completion, you will see "Success. Press any key". Do soft-reset.

no problem mannn....feel free to discuss...well, u may be true.Actually, when i was about to buy an SDHC card, even i was confused about the compatability. But then i took advice from Sumit(Krazy) and he acknowledged me than all his roms do contain the supporting dll for SDHC.thats why i went for an SDHC card as i wanted an 8gb storage.
As far as i remember, even my friend(with whom i went to buy the card...) had a brand new stock new gene...we tried the card first in his device.din run..not even didnt recognise the card. But as i was using sumit's VM v3.1.1 it worked without problems on my gene.

So I got myself a class 10 MicroSD from newegg from the company called Patriot (reviews for all their products say its a good company)
NewEgg page with item
In any case I figured 99$ isnt too bad. So I got the memory card today and sure enough computer has no issues reading it.Speeds are great and no bad reads or writes
So Im trying to set it up with ext3 etc and nothing seems to be working. So in any case I reformatted everything to fat32 on my PC and the phone isn't even detecting the memory card.
I was under the impression 32GB microsd should be ok. I hope this isnt a compatibility issue. Anyone else have thoughts in this?
Tried partition magic, default disk management application on xp also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and no luck. At this point I just want the phone to detect the memory card to I can format it from the phone and then do the ext3 either from CW or Amon
Anyone? Is changing the drive letter on a computer going to change anything?
I heard that FAT32 does not support 32GB partition very well.. also some card readers have problem with reading a 32GB shdc card.
Try to make a 10GB Fat32 partition on your SD card and leave remaining space free, see if your phone can use it.

Thanks ill give it a try but no point in a 32gig card if cant use most of it on the phone. Dont need most of the card as ext3 lol
Working fine here. I used Acronis True Image to clone the card the first go around, but didn't like how it setup the card. Then used Acronis Disk Director to reconfigure a 31gb FAT & 1gb ext3. You can use Amon_RA Recovery to setup the card too. I did do that too, but I already have Disk Director to give me the gui view of what's going on.
Cannot get EXT3 partition to work on Desire
I'm also having issues getting the ext3 partition of the Kingston 32GB micro sdhc card to work with my desire.
I used GParted to create a large fat32 partition and also created a 1GB ext3 partition, but when i reboot the handset i get an error meesage on the desire telling me that the sd card is damaged and that i need to format. When i go back into GParted the FAT32 partition looks healthy but ext3 partition comes up as unallocated.
This method has worked fine with an 2 and 8GB micro sd but it seems to have issues when using the 32GB.
I've also tried using rom manager to create a 512MB ext3 partition but that just causes the phone to sit on on the boot up screen.
If anyone is experiencing the same/similar problem, please let me know how you tackled it.
Try to use Amon_RA's recovery and reformat your SD card with it.
Gparted seems to be the best tool to use.
Hi,
Same problem with a Patriot MicroSD 32GB Class10.
Attempt to partition MicroSD with :
-Gparted
-Minitool Partition Wizard Home
-CWM (HD2)
Partitions are always destroyed or strange modified so Android can't read FAT32 partition.
No problems with a Sandisk 32GB Class 2.
Ok i worked out what this issue was.
Unfortunantly i've purchased a counterfeit Kingston MicroSD.
Kingston confirmed that it was a fake after i send them pics so that explains everything.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
The reviews seem mixed on the Patriot
I like sdformatter--thorough job--make sure settings are as recommended
I have bought Sandisk microSDXC 64GB class 10 UHS1. When I put it in my computer using USB2.0 Kingston Mobile Reader it could not recognise it. I removed it and I placed it in my Galaxy Note. I went into clockworkmod 6.19 (Non Touch) and I partitioned the card with 2GB or 4GB (I do not remember exactly!!!) and Swap size 256k. When my phone restarted, the phone did not recognize the card. Therefore, I went through the internet to find a solution. I found the program "EaseUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition" and reformatted the card with FAT32 and cluster size 32KB. When it finally finished, it gave me the size 27.46GB!! I reformatted through SD Formatter 3.0 hoping that the partition used through Clockworkmod messed up the actual size of the card. I successfully re-formatted the card, however the size remained the same. I know that the size of a microSDHC card 32GB is around 29GB, therefore it does not explain size 27.46GB.
My question now, if there is an answer!!! Is the card faulty or did Clockworkmod messed with the card?
Please advise if possible!
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, because I think this a very strange story!

How sure you are that your Kingston reader is SDXC compatible? If it's not, it can be that your card is damaged now and can't be fixed (I had that issue). Second thing you should have format the card using some exFAT compatible ROM (for example XLS7 or XLSA) in storage section of the phone, not in CWM.
You should also check if there isn't any other partitions on the card using EaseUS Partition Master. I would delete all partitions on the card and then format using exFAT. But it would work only if the card isn't already damaged by incompatible reader.
If you search abit you will find that sdxc cards used with sdhc reader can be damaged. google it you will find it.

Format it with the phone. That usually gets it.
Hii Everyone,
I am having a 32gb sd card right now in my phone. So they(brand and websites selling this phone Mmx Canvas A1) say that our phone supports 32gb expandable memory via sd-card. But in other thread i read that it is supporting a 200gb card. So, since my sd card is full, i was thinking of buying 64gb card. But please first of all let me know that if it really supports it..??
Please mention if u had 64 gb card in your phone.. or maybe if u don't have a 64 gb card then can share your experience. Thanks in advance.
Bro, if a 200 GB card is working, then a 64 GB one would definitely work.
Sent from my Spice Mi-498 using Tapatalk
Yes sprout 4 gen 1 does support 64 GB SDXC micro sd card and also higher capacity. I am the one who's currently having a 200 GB sandisk micro sd card and previously had the strontium 64 GB sdxc memory card that did worked fine.
Most of latest phones do support 64 GB sdxc memory cards. If the phone supports sdxc ( Secure Digital Xtended Capacity) which supports eXFat format which is microsoft patented, so that sdxc cards are pricey than sdhc (upto 32 GB) which supports fat32.
You may reformat to any readable format after buying an sdxc card (like fat32, ntfs, ext etc). However it's advisable not to mess with the format unless until you know what you 're doing,
You may blindly go for a 64 GB micro sd card. It will work out of the box
thank you

Yes sprout 4 gen 1 does support 64 GB SDXC micro sd card and also higher capacity. I am the one who's currently having a 200 GB sandisk micro sd card and previously had the strontium 64 GB sdxc memory card that did worked fine.

Thanks buddy, so i will order a card tomorrow. But here are two more questions in my mind..??
1) Reading sd card is situated with which part of phone. Is it hardware, software(rom) or the kernal?? Coz u mentioned there that u were using cm12.1 beta5(i am on official marshmallow 6.0.1 with thunderzap 5.1 kernal and phone is rooted)
2) Why they (brand and sellers) had written 32 gb expandable only (sorry, i must ask it from micromax itself. I will surely mail them )
And 1 more (SanDisk Ultra® MicroSDXC™ 64GB 48MB/S UHS-I Card) is good to go....

1) Both hardware & software, In windows starting from windows xp to 10. (xp needs update patch to support eXFat). In mac version 10 and after will support eXFat, so as that older andriod version (Before andriod 2.3 Ginger bread) and host devices (old phones with limited hardware spec specially ram below 1 GB) don't support sdxc sd & micro sd cards.
2) It's because sdxc format reached the enduser in 2010. Most of the newer hosts (phones) that came after 2010 with decent spec will support sdxc cards. Irrespective of OS (Either it be Mac, Windows, andriod etc.).
And why manufacturers don't mention it. Because if they mention it in the official spec, you won't go for higher end models. If a 5k phone can officially support 200 GB card then most people don't even think of higher end models above 10-25k. Even today manufacturers for their own good will not mention in spec of low budget phones that sdxc micro sd cards are supported
You may go for the card brand of your choice, since you 're using it on a low budget device. The card read/write speed doesn't matter.
Thanks again bro,
All doubt's been cleared.
