Hi there, Ok I have searched through the forums and the wiki etc with no prevail.
So my problem is, I was using my rooted dream fine (I bought it new but pre rooted) Anyway the backlight decided to stop working so now the phone is virtually unusable, as well the screen will not respond to any of my touches.
So I cannot go in and tinker with the settings,
To work out whether this is a software issue or an actual screen issue I want to reload the ROM if I can using my computer and not via the phone (As I cant see what im doing obviously) Is this possible and how would I go about doing this?
Thanks!
1) This is a development forum, not a diagnostoc forum...this needs to go in the q&a thread if you expect people to love you
B) The likeliness of it being the rom is VERY low. It sounds like you have 2 issues- the screen backlight is off, and the digitizer is not responding. Is this correct? What does it do when you connect it to your PC?
3) If it is a hardware issue, and Tmo wont help, try HTC. Their service is excellent.
Oh ok, When I plug it into my computer I gets recognized but I cannot open the drive as I cant mount it on the phone
I dont know if this will help, but maybe take a look here:
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html
It says developer phone only, but that is pretty much what you have...
or, try this: (stolen from somewhere on Google)
Load update.zip onto your SD card
Boot into fastboot(Power+Camera)
Plug in USB, press back on phone
Make sure you have the driver for the G1 installed on your computer
confirm your computer detects your phone
type:
fastboot devices
then type:
fastboot push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
I tried the 2nd option, but I cant get into the sd card via my computer as it just says in C: Drive that the device needs to be inserted as I havent mounted it

So, I broke my phone and a buddy had an MDA laying around. However, when you turn it on a ton of errors come up:
Init_Tray.exe
CapNotify.exe
WiFiInit.exe
CheckAutoRun.exe
all are missing or cannot be found.
I tried the hard reset and no go. I was able to get it into bootloader mode and attempted to try the T-mobile ROM upgrade in hopes that I could fix this phone and I got error 274. Does this mean the phone cannot be fixed?? WM runs all goofy and I'm hoping that someone can provide some insight on this phone. TIA.
In the words of the immortal Johnny Five from the movie "Short Circuit"-INPUT! NNNEEEDDD INPUT!!! But seriosuly man, download the Wizard Service Tool, and tell us what information it displays, such as your IPL/SPL, if its a G4 or G3 and whatnot...than we can help yah!
Got the tool and at first it would not let me run the ENAB RAPI + UNASSIGNED APPS, but finally it let me. (just so you know, from time to time when connected to ActiveSync it will disconnect on it's own). Got ENAB + APPS to work, but when I hit DEVICE INFO I get the following:
Warning!
A device was detected but one (or both) of RAPI
Communications and Applications Policy isn't
enabled.
Use first button for that purpose and try again
--------
So, I ran it (ENAB+APPS) again and it was successful again, but when I hit the DEVICE INFO I get the same error.
Is there any possible way to flash the ROM via the SD card??? I think one the biggest problems is the Active Sync connectivity.

Nopes ! sdcard rom flash is only possible,if you already had backed up the present rom on a sdcard and secondly, if the phone is already CID unlocked.
You can manually copy and paste the two cabfiles 'EnableRapi' and 'Cert_SPCS',in your phone and execute, they can be found in the installation folder of the Wizard Service Tool...> files folder in the program files in C:\ drive,if you are able to establish connection with Activesync.
To verify the connectivity, get your phone into Bootloaders mode (multicolor screen) and hook up the phone with pc via usb, check if small usb appear at the bottom of the Bootloaders,if its there, than its establishing connection, otherwise, your usb cable or mini usb port of the phone is faulty.
Many connections problems are also related to weak battery, get the battery fully charged.
If it establishes connection in Bootloaders, than download the official carrier's rom and flash it in Bootloaders,it'll work out.
Cheers!
I was able to put these files 'EnableRapi' and 'Cert_SPCS' on there, but when I go to execute it does it super fast and I don't get a verification. Is that normal?
I will charge the battery and try that too. Thanks.
Yes, that is normal..all they do is tweak 2 settings, they dont actually write anything, and no, they dont have any kind of confirmation screen to go along with them.
Finally!!!!
So, I was finally able to bring this badboy back to a usable state. After many failed attempts at flashing the ROM I tried something that I hadn't done before. I killed the wcescomm process and disabled ActiveSync via USB before I connecting the MDA in bootloader mode. Once I did this the ROM update began working and I almost jumped out of my seat at work. Was able to get it going without and crazy errors and now have a usable MDA. Thanks for everyones advice.
Kill the wcescomm process!!!! and disable USB AS!!!!
When you start to flash and run RUU,it automatically disables and stops Activesync, but yes, sometimes it helps out by manually disabling and or altogether stop activesync running by stopping wcescomm process.
Anyway,glade you got it working.
Is it possible to unroot your phone without your usb connection working anymore? I plug my phone into my computer which is running Windows XP Media Center edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 and it says USB Device not recognized. I tried to manually update the driver in the device manager but it tells me that the specified location does not contain information about your hardware and I verified that they are the drivers for my hero. I even tried a new cable to eliminate that as a problem but I still have the same issues. To give it one last try I plugged it into my laptop Running Windows Vista and also came up with usb device not recognized. I would like to return my phone to Sprint so I can get the usb connection problem fixed but I need to unroot the phone first. PLEASE HELP! - Josh

you can "re-flash" the stock .img files from Better Terminal. I lucked out on my last phone that went completely dead for no reason I knew of. The techs couldn't revive my rooted phone, so I got a replacement.
Since then, I do a "watered down" root - @forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Without having to wipe everything clean and start from scratch- Flashing the stock and removing root works for me through this:
I copied unrevoked and RA1.6.2 to my sdcard. Use step 7 & 8 (sh /sdcard/unrevoked and flash the RA recovery img). After reboot, I make a nand backup.
For me anyway- by doing none of the rest, it allows me to remove the apps I want to remove and allows me to reflash the stock 2.1 recovery image. I can then update to .6 if necessary to seal it up...flashing the recovery image can be done from the phone using Better Terminal as well.
The only reason I prefer it this way is, I don't want to use a custom ROM and I only want to pull some of the unecessary (for me) apps out. I'll back it up and if need be, I am 1 step closer to "unrooting" it.
I know, I know...but to each his own...I've taken a rooted phone in (no custom ROM) with a speaker issue- no hassles. I've taken a rooted phone in for dust under the screen, way back when- and had to argue the point that ROMS and rooting had nothing to do with a defect in manufacturing that caused the dust under the screen (was able to get a replacement just slightly after my 30 days was up).... So when this last one was completely dead - I thought for sure it was going to cost me.
Long Lost Thank You!
I tried that and it totally worked. I appreciate the detailed feedback. I just realized I never commented back! Now I have an EVO and I just put MIUI on it, can't wait to try it out. Thanks again!
I have done the unfortunate thing and bricked my phone, now I did see a post in here on this subject but I am not able to open this program/app on either Ubuntu or Windows 7 PC's.
Now my questions...
Is this the only way to unbrick my phone?
Using Linux or Windows, which one works better?
I am using the Rogers one i896, the screen just stays at i896. I will explain what I was trying to do, I had installed Clockworkmod on my rooted phone on the intentions to install another ROM on my phone. I boycotted this idea as I saw another way that had me download the zip, enable debugging, turnoff and place into recovery mode...that is where I got stuck. I obviously made a mistake somewhere, does anyone have any ideas how to unbrick my phone. Not too make it sound worse but I have to use my wife's old Blackberry...a pink flip!
Linux works better. After dl, right click, permissions, check the little box that says make it executable. Click ok. Now right click on it, open with java (either open jdk, or sun java ). The app should open.
Thanks very much, I was now able to install on Linux but after all this the unbrick did not work. It tells me to plug my phone in, the phone is in the USB port it has always been in. I turned the phone in the off position and all it does is show a load symbol similar to the one before the battery charge comes on, when it goes on it just stops at the i896 screen and does nothing else. Any other ideas on how to unbrick this phone? or am I done and got to get a new one? I'd rather keep this one
Ok not to say nothing is working, but I have a yellow triangle with Android digging, says downloading below and at the bottom do not turn off target!!! What does this mean?

Plug it into the computer and hit the button.
I tried that but my pc doesnt pickup my Samsung anymore, it is like it doesnt exist when I plug in. I am gonna reboot the PC and retry.
Are you using a Linux machine?
yes I am I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed, I never had this trouble before with it recognizing the phone.
If you can get download mode, flash back to stock.
It goes into download mode but not sure how to flash to stock
There is a sticky in the development section for stock ROM.

Thanks guys, I have read the instructions and all is fine except that I am using Rogers version i896, if it doesn't make any difference then I will load the AT&T if there would be issues. Second issue I am running into is while my phone goes into download mode, my PC's continue to not see my phone, I have removed everything including the SD card. Any ideas how to get the phone to be recognized as I think this would solve a lot
My friend recently had similar problems and it turned out to be a bad cable. Don't overlook the obvious.

Ok so I purchased an i9000M that was advertised as broken (got it for cheap) to see if I could get it going for my step daughter. I turn it on.... I get the samsung boot screen and goes black when it should be booting OS.
Windows still recognizes it somewhat. If I look in device manager under "portable devices" It shows a "j" and "k" drive that are identified as i9000 and i9000 sd or something like that. Although Windows sees it.... It wont mount these drives unfortunately.
Things I've tried ( Before someone suggests I use a JIG............. It doesn't and will not work on this phone)
USB JIG (tested and working on my Hercules)
SD Card Partition (EXT4 and FAT32) because I suspect borked internal storage
SD Card Partition (ReiserFS and FAT32) Still nothing......... then I realized the phone probably wasnt rooted
3 button combos ( every single combination) nada
plugging in USB cable while holding volume up and down...
ADB Reboot recovery/download ( not recognized because I cant turn on debugging)
ETC ETC ETC........
I have been searching google for hours for some kind of clue as to what can be done other than JTAG repair and All I come up with (no matter what site im on) is " Use a USB JIG" duhhhh Its getting rather annoying.
Im no stranger to flashing ( no expert) but this one has me stumped. I was considering buying a RIFFbox anyways but I thought maybe some experienced users out there might be able to suggest something.
My hope is that something can be done with the J and K drive that was mentioned. Perhaps I can format and somehow push a rom straight to the internal storage without any assistance from the phone itself...... I know..... wishful thinking. or perhaps boot straight from external SD???? That would be interesting!
More to this.... I realize this question has probably been asked a million times because it seems to be a common issue on this phone but I suppose my long winded question really boils down to my last paragraph which I havent seen suggested yet.
EDIT: I have a Windows 7 AND kubuntu 12.04 dual boot if any suggestions require linux
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks. i will have a look and experiment tomorrow.
I'll report back my progress
if it pops up when you plug it into the computer, check if it does in odin. if does in there too try to flash a stock rom. or better yet take this download and follow the read me intructions, except the dl mode part cause you said it doesnt work. try both with the phone on and off. no it isnt the bell version of the pom but it will work. you will problably want to root it then install galaxy s unlock tool from the market and use that to unlock the phone aswell.(cause it not the bell rom)

As I mentioned.... no download mode, therefore.... No ODIN. Unless someone has some magical way to make it work otherwise. The computer knows its an I9000 at least. Kies says its in the wrong mode and I have no UI so debugging is out of the question.
Also: Xsenmen. I was unable to get any of the tools to connect. In one section you mention that AndroPlatina attempts to connect while booting? I was unable to get this to happen. I even tried the "heat trick" to no avail
So about two nights ago I noticed my phone wasn't taking a charge and eventually died. Once the phone was powered off it charges fine but turn it on and no more charging or connect to PC. So I've been searching for a solution since then as this would seem to be a software issue but nothing I have done has made a bit of difference. Now I want to bring the device back to 100% stock to either start fresh or make an exchange with T-Mobile.
Every way to restore to stock required fastboot & adb which obviously I cannot do since I cannot connect to PC. Please share any insights or at the very least steer me in the direction of the light. Thanks

First, if you can boot into android, download a zip of your stock from your phone and flash it through recovery. If you can't do that, see if you have another micro usb cable, try connecting it to your phone and pc and see if that works. If not, cycle through your boot modes connected to pc (bootlader, android -if possible-, and recovery). Do you hear any sounds from your pc that indicate something is connected to it? Especially important for recovery to stock. If you hear a sound when you boot into recovery, you can flash the stock RUU or zip to get your phone back to stock. Next, disconnect phone from your pc, uninstall htc sync and all drivers for the phone. Reconnect the phone to your pc after that, and if it boots to android, it should reinstall sync and drivers automatically. Aside from this, the only other thing I can think of would be an exchange due to faulty usb. Hope this helps. I've included a couple of links to your stock RUU and zip (I'm assuming your T-mobile US). I hope this helps. -Mike
T-Mobile stock nandroid zip (Note: You need CWM for this)
T-Mobile stock RUU (It's an .exe you run with the phone connected to pc in recovery. Scroll to the bottom for the download. You need stock recovery for this)
I hope this helps.
Mike
One more thing: You got lucky no one flamed you for posting a question in the general thread. Next time you should post a question in the Q&A thread. Not everyone is as nice as me around here.
hi. i'm having the same issue on att variant... reported in depth here:
