I am rooting a G1 for a friend right now. He has had the G1 for over a year but never applied a single update. It was still running RC29 when I got the phone in my hands.
I have since gained root and am running 1.6 on it right now. I am attempting to flash CM recovery, but I'm getting an error in the flashrec app...when I click "backup recovery image" it says "backup FAILED: could not run command". If I just click "download recovery image" it downloads fine, says "downloaded & verified" but the "flash recovery image" button is greyed out.
I suspect this is something to do with SU access, but I am stumped as I have never had this issue before.
dont use flashrec then. manually download a recovery image, put it on the sd card after renaming it to recovery.img, then open terminal and type in flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

It said flash_image: not found
but the img file is right there on the sdcard.

Sounds like you need to verify that you have root.
If you are having trouble with Cyanogn's recovery image try using Amon_Ra's image it is far more superior anyway. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669 Hope that works for you.

Can someone please help me install this? I've tried the terminal way and the update.zip way and I still see JF 1.43 recovery utility.
You sure you did it correctly? Try again make sure you redownload the image file. It should be roughly 4000kb.

first obviously make sure you have root, do this buy going into Terminal Emulator and typing su then press enter you should see this (#) and make sure the .img file that you downloaded (Cyanogen's Recovery 1.3.1) is in the root of your SD card, this is where all your folders are like (DCIM) (make sure you don't rename the .img file) once all that is verified then go back to Terminal Emulator and type su again and when you get the (#) symbol type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.3.1.img exactly how you see it because it is case sensitive then press enter, now turn off or reboot back in to Recovery and verify that it worked.
So I download the image by right click save as and then the name it has. Then after I put in the SD Card to my G1 then I go to the terminal emulator. I type in su (wait for a screen to popup and press "allow")
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.3.1.img. It then says Flash_Image not found.... What do I do? And do I have to Partition my SD Card first?
ok now it says error reading...
What is it you're trying to do? Flash the recovery image? Or flash a ROM?
Do step 5 HERE
That is cm recovery 1.4
Have you tried the 6-minute version? It has worked for me on 2-different phones.

i have two recovery images on my sdcard, and neither of them are flashing, i rooted using z4root. that was the only method i could find to root my phone after the weeklong search. ive recently had to re root because i got a refurb. either way they stuck me with .7 i updated to .2 because i could not root .7 got it rooted , yay, but now i am having the hardest time flasing a recovery image. i tried using rom manager to get clockworks but the download from the market would not download, so i put it on my sdcard and did it myself. so i have rom manager now, but it keeps telling me i need reliable connection, im on wifi and i have five bars. ive had no luck.
i pushed both the recovery images i have on my sd card, and i tried to flash them but it keeps telling me they cant find them.

Just get rom manager from the market and install clockwork recovery from the app. It sounds like you dont have the binary for flash_image.

Go to my signature and click on the CWM link. Then unzip a version and place the recovery.img on the root of your SD card. Now download Busybox installer, and terminal emulator. Install busybox and after installing open terminal emulator and then enter these commands:
Code:

i did all that installed busybox and all that stuff and i always get flash_image not found or something like that
EDIT:
Got it to work jsut need to go to 2.27.651.5 instead of 2.27.651.6
I seem to be having nearly this exact same problem. Maybe If I can flash a recovery to my hero I wont need to create a thread of my own asking for help.
What did you mean by "need to go to 2.27.651.5 instead of 2.27.651.6"?
I have root... or at least the "su" command in terminal gives me a #. I have placed the recovery image on the root directory of my sd just as dastin said and run the command but I am getting the flash_image not found error.
That's the RUU version.

Okay. Maybe my issue is not so similar after all.
I have stock that has been rooted. That is as far as I got. There were countless problems during the rooting process but I have achieved the # in the terminal. This means it's rooted right?
At this point I think I just need to flash a recovery and for some reason I can't install "ROM manager" as I get a "Parse error" when running the .apk. So I thought this manual method would solve my issues.
Maybe I should start my own thread. This might get complicated.

The image file is on the root directory of my sd card.
I'm not sure but it seems like the "flash_image" command just doesn't work. If I type "flash_image" and hit enter, it gives the same error as if I type "dead_bears".
dead_bears: not found
I don't think this has anything to do with my image file. I think something is wrong with the command.

Let me ask you this are you trying to flash this from terminal or from adb ?? If there isn't a copy of the recovery img in your adb tools folder then trying to flash it threw adb wouldn't take because the image isn't there. Since the img is on your SD card then you should flash it threw terminal if your not trying it already. If you want to flash it threw adb then place a copy of the recovery img in your adb tools folder and then run the commands from cmd terminal VIA pc/laptop. Also have you made sure that the recovery img is named correctly ?? Also will you post your setup, as in rom,kernel,baseband/radio, and hboot. Also how did you obtain root ??? Thanks
#Root_Hack-Mod*Always\
I am using the terminal and I have tried ADB as well. Both do the exact same thing. I obtained root manually but I had so many problems that don't remember where the guide that I followed is. I named the recovery image "r.img" for ease of typing.
I don't know about rom,kernel,baseband/radio, and hboot. I flashed stock to the phone after purchasing it so that I could get it activated, so these things are likely at defaults.
I still don't think that the "flash_image: not found" error has anything to do with the image file itself.

I think you should ruu back to stock and reroot again. Reason why I suggest this is because of how you gained root. If something wasn't done correctly we could be at this for hours and days trying to figure this out. But before you take that route I'll send you a pm with something I would like you to try that might work.

Quick??? Are you able to boot up into your Rom ???
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I decided to flash stock the other night so now I'm going to try and re-root and flash a custom ROM.
I am considering this method for re-rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909258&highlight=root
Any suggestions before I get started?
What I meant by have to be on the 2.27.651.5 RUU instead of 2.27.651.6 RUU as the flash_image is not in thr 2.27.651.6 RUU so you need to be on the 5 version of stock in order to use flash_image

Hello Folks,
I'm still stuck with my nexus one since I don't care that much about phones.
I've seen that jelly bean roms have made a significant progress. Thus I decided to give it a shot.
I started with installing adb and fastboot. :good: After that I rooted the nexus one :good: I've used this how to:
c2med blog, can't post links...
Next, I ran blackrose. :good: I saved the rom on the micro sd. Having done all the preperations I wanted to flash the JB rom.
I started the phone in bootloader mode but - unfortunately - couldn't access the recovery mode (ext4). I only get the Android figure and an exclamation mark.
In the how-to it sais i should use fastboot to flash the recovery made by ext 4.
Problem # 1: Ext4 generated a .zip, not a .img file
Problem # 2: I connect the device in fastboot mode, navigate to the adb/fastboot folder and use ./fastboot devices. The phone is recognized and I see the serial number. Next I try "flash recovery...." but I only get "command not found". Now, I basically have no idea what to do.
Which recovery should I flash? And how?
I'm so looking forward to your answers.

What you get is the stock recovery.
Flash 4Ext recovery or Amon RA recovery ( fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img)
Among the several guides to install JB, I suggest you to look at the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804571
I just finished this morning the following process:
install RA recovery,
install Blackrose and resize partition,
install from SD card Evervolv-Perdo-3.2.0-Nightly-2013.01.13-passion.zip
install from SD card gapps-ev-jb-20120816.zip
I spent a lot of times reading and trying. I had an issue after installing Evervolv-perdo-3.1.0final-passion zip. That's why I switched to the Nightly (JB 4.2).
Once you are set install a2sd from within the terminal emulator on your N1.
In my opinion this is so far the best ROM I ever have had on my Nexus 1.:good:
I am impressed to the extend that I offer to my wife to do the same on her N1. She said no. No to unlock, no to root and of course no to custom ROM.
Good luck
Hi,
thanks for your reply. Thats basically what i did as well. But after using Blackrose i can't go into the recovery mode.
I used the same tutorial. The problem lies here:
"Note: some people have reported having problems getting into recovery at this point (if not move on to step 5). If that happens, luckily for you, 4ext put a recovery image in the downloads folder of your SD card and if you did what I said in step 2 you saved it. Try reflashing that recovery image using fastboot (remember the one that was in SD/Download/4EXT_Recovery_Touch/ and was named "recovery.img"). Put your phone into the bootloader by turning off your phone, turning it on again while holding the trackball down. To reflash the recovery open command prompt and cd to the location of the Android SDK tools. Then type in the following command (replacing "path" with the path to where the recovery image is located on your computer):
Code:
fastboot flash recovery /path/recovery.img
If that does not solve your problems (inability to get into recovery) then I would recommend going back to the cyanogenmod wiki and installing Amon_Ra's recovery. Then you can use it to flash your installation zip."
It seems like I am unable to understand what I am supposed to do. Could somebody give me a step by step advice? I would prefer using some other recovery.img than mine...

In other words open your folder android-sdk-windows installed on the root of your C: hd. Click on the folder platform-tools and download Amon RA recovery in this folder. Left click anywhere on a blank area of this folder then press the key Shift (keyboard) and right click your mouse. In the drop down menu select Open command window. In the CMD, to be sure that the N1 is recognized by the pc (meaning the right drivers are installed) type ADB devices and press enter. You should see a string of numbers like HT9C......
Type adb reboot bootloader and press enter. You are in the fastboot mode ( and mood if I may say so) and the phone shows that it is in the bootloader. You can check again that N1 is recognized by the pc by typing fastboot devices. Same string appears.
Type fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img.
After the installation is completed boot in recovery, select Flash zip from sdcard, select the ROM you have dropped on the card. When the installation is completed go back to Flash zip from sdcard ( you are still in recovery mode) and select the gapps you have dropped on the sdcard.
Go back to Reboot system now. You are then out of the recovery and it takes some times for the N1 to boot to this beautiful JB

As c2med posted in his guide, sometimes, people lose their recovery when they repartition using Black Rose. Hence, its always best to have Amon-RA or 4EXT flashable .img file in your PC so that incase you lose recovery, you can always flash it back.
Once you are in bootloader ( also called FASTBOOT mode) you can flash your recovery.
Then reboot into recovery from FASTBOOT (Shutdown and then restart using the recovery combination)
Once you are in recovery, follow the steps in c2med's guide (wipe cache/dalvik/etc - except sd-card ofcourse) and flash your ROM from sd card.
Then reboot into JayBee
In the screenshot you type:
$ ./fastboot devices
then you type:
$ flash recovery ......../recovery.img
Command not found.... Sure, flash it's not a command...
You need to type fastboot command first!
$ ./fastboot flash recovery ......../recovery.img

Thank You! That's what I figuered out last night. Of course I also tried "fastboot flash" but forgot the "./". That was the key. Now the JB ROM works like a charm.
New Problem:
I can't install google apps. In fact I don't really need them. I only use a few apps and found the .apk files with google. Unfortunately the "official" Google apps like chrome don't work.
Plus, I wanted to install the camera (laggy in the evervolv - rom) and keyboard from here.

When you're in recovery, select "Flash zip from SD card" and then select "Toggle signature verification" to disable signature verification, and then "Choose zip from SD card" and navigate to the zip file that you want to flash.
