Gmail App gone - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok i figure ill throw this out there maybe some has a fix..
I was on 4.2.8 and everything was 200% when 4.2.8.1 was released i used CM Updater(latest) to update and i come to find that the gmail icon was gone fully gone wiped out.. i flip up the tray and it was gone from there too...so i did a wipe the flash 1.6adp then flashed cyanmod 4.2.8.1 and same issue the gmail icon was gone..
so i did a full wipe of everything from a-z(sarcasm) but did wipe every thing that could be wipe then re flash 1.6 then cyanmod over agian still the same issue.. so i unrooted and gmail app was back so then i rooted and update using recovery 1.4 cyan and gmail was there but i get acor forclose and blah blah...
so i wiped and did it again and still same issue so i used amon ra 1.5.2 recovery image wiped a-z again then flash 1.6 and cyan 4.2.8.1 and gmail was gone once again so i left it as is
and did partations sd
from there acore for close stop and was able to use market agian
then i downloaded astro manager and went thru the 1.6adp ota and i found gmail and installed! success it worked(odd) i install gmail app from astro file manager today
backdraw of this is thatgs this is install on my sd with partation so when i go to applications i have the option to uninstall gmail(shouldnt be a option)
so my question is.. anyone have a good idea whats happening or a fix to reflash with gmail there with out installing it to sd card..
or a way to push the gmail app to the phone from the sdcard..?
i kno that was long to read.. but just wanted to get all the steps i did so question or response will come say wipe and reflash when that proccess was done about 12 times(started at 8am and didnt finish{gave up} around 10)

Found out it is my sd card its partation.. and each time i update it misses up the update.. i used a clean new sdcard (1g) and wiped 2x and then flash the 1.6adp then the new cMod and i got my gmail icon back(original) so this can be closed now.. thanks

CM problems

**Distress Call**
I'm running an up to date radio and splash, i was on CM 4.0.4 with enoch theme when i actidentally flashed an apk which screwed me up so i couldnt get past splash so i just wiped and flashed CM 4.1.11.1 over. Which is when my phone started to seriously lag like never before and i lost my contacts and cant use and apps like Pandora or music search, I cannot even acess my contacs. (everytime i try i get FC on android.process.acore) and so i decided to flash 4.0.4 and that didnt work, still lagged, still couldnt use apps (which all FC'd) or acess contacts or acess my XDA SMS, but i downloaded Chomp SMS and could send texts with that, but still had no contacts. so I just today wiped and reflashed 4.0.4 again. but nothing seems to be working.
What should I do?
i have fat32 8gb sd with 1 ext2 partition
i have latest haykuro (Cant spell) SPL (I think)
I have CM 1.4 Recovery IMG
and the 2.22.19.261 radio (Idrk what it is, but it worked before the accidental flashing of an apk.)
you are going to have to wipe your sd card, reformat and repartition
and reinstall the protected apps that are force closing on you

Strange Behavior....

Only ROM I can get to boot totally is xRom v1.5r4.
Cyanogen 4.0.4 and 4.11.1.1 both have severe FCs at setup screen (google talk, setup, etc). I can cancel the beginning walkthrough and enter in my gmail and password, but then i get a network error (status bar shows 3g connection).
Not sure what to make of it. I went all the way back to stock RC29 and rerooted to try to fix and it's still there. Again, xRom is up and running. Just got a gmail notification.
Ideas?

What steps did you take to install? Did you wipe your phone? Did you wipe your partitions?
So...I just got 4.0.4 to boot. Here's what i did.
manually "parted" to just a fat32 partition.
mounted via console to copy over cm4.0.4 zip
reboot to recovery
wipe
apply update
reboot
took care of all force closes
should i be able to go back and repartition for my ext now then wipe and reboot no problems? I'm not sure what happened, but this all started when i wanted to try out a hero rom coming from 4.1.999 yesterday. i'm starting now with 4.0.4 before i upgrade further (no more curiosity for me in hero roms).
i am using the danger spl and matching radio on a side note currently

Well the one thing that you got to remember from switching from hero roms to non hero roms is you always have to wipe your ext partition otherwise you'll run into problems like that. Yes you can repartition your card now but if I were you I would repartition your card then reflash the rom so apps2sd comes into affect.
that's what has me puzzled. I have flashed an older version of jac's before, and i always start with wiping and fresh partitions. i don't know what happened this time.

Want to reinstall CMod

hi,
a few days ago i uninstalled google maps on my G1 running the latest version on CyanogenMod. So i thouhgt i would reset everything by doing a wipe in the CM recovery Console (v1.4). So after doing a wipe i see that Google maps is still not there again. Im aware that i can install it again, but i would like to do a complete reset of all system files.
Could someone give me a hint on how to do this?
Thanks!
We need a little more info to be able to help.
What version of CM are you running?
Are you willing to do a complete wipe?
Were you running apps2sd?
Were you running a swap file or compcache?
Were you running a modified boot img?
Do you have a nandroid back-up?
Do you have any form of back up?
IF you don't know the answers to any of those that is fine, an "I don't know" is better than a "No", when it was really a "Yes".
All CM roms after {at least} 4.2.3.1 need the signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip (signed.zip)
{You can do a search for the link on these forums.}
The Google Maps apk comes from the signed.zip. Reflashing the CM on later versions will not get you anything from Google.
In fact you can really mess up your phone if you don't have the signed.zip .
You might wanna find it, download it, and have it on hand for when you need it.
And let us know the answers to the above questions so we can help you out.
Thanks for the reply!
I'm running CyanogenMod v4.2.8.1
Yes, i would love to do a complete wipe
I was not using swap2sd or compcache(as far as i know)
Concerning the Boot Image i have Recovery 1.4
Yes, i have Nandroid backup
Firmware-Version: 1.6
Baseband-Version: 62.50S.20.17U_2-22-19.26I
Kernel-Version: 2.6.29.6-cm42 [email protected] )
Build-Number: DRC83
I hope this info helps.
To have installed 4.2.8.1 you had to have the signed.zip file listed above.
Do not wipe ...yet
Try this...
HOME+POWER to boot to recovery
Install from zip
the signed.zip.....DO NOT REBOOT
Install from zip
cm 4.2.8.1.zip
REBOOT
The signed.zip should replace your maps program.
You might look into putting Amon Ra's recovery program on there instead of CM rec 1.4 RA's is more detailed and will allow you to wipe more data on the sdcard such as your dalvik cache and any partition data...IF you need to .
Try this simple step first and see where it gets you.
Ok, i applied the signed.zip, and after that i reapplied CyanogenMod 4.2.8.1.
Google Maps is back but some setting didnt get cleared. For example, the USB Debug mode is still on, or it continued to download some updates which i started earlier. It didnt reset everything.
Any idea why that might be?
LOL You said you wanted maps back...I got you maps back.
And now your not happy Jeez!
USB debugg is automatically turned on by the CM rom.
go to Settings>applications>Development to turn it off.
We didn't do a Fresh install we just did an re-install.
If you want to actually wipe it clean, then I highly suggest using Ra's recovery since it is a one click wipe.
Cm Recovery will wipe too.
Home+Power to cm rec 1.4
Wipe
Install from zip
signed.zip
install from zip
cm 4.2.8.1
REBOOT
And you should have a fresh install with no other data.
If you have apps already on there when you reboot, then you have apps2sd active and you need to wipe the ext partition to clear those apps.
The Amon Ra recovery will do that for you.
Well, i want to wipe since i got the feeling is a bit messed up. Just seems very slow at times and my connection drops once in a while.
So i'm going to Install Amon Ra's recovery and perform a wipe.
I didnt have app2sd active. I never did any partitioning to my sdard. Im going to Low Level format my sdcard just to make sure nothing is left on there. But as i mentioned, i did the reinstall as you said and after it booted, and i didnt the sign in stuff, setting time etc... it continued to download 2 apps which i started earlier.
I'll let you know how it went with Amon Ra's
Ok, this worked great! I installed Amon Ra's Recovery and executed ever option which had the word "wipe" in it Then applied signed.zip and after CMod. Perfect!
Thanks a lot for your help

com.google.process.gapps force close

Hello
After I flashed new recovery image (Amon RA Recovery) I wiped then deleted dalvin cache and ext, then repaired ext. After all wiping I flashed super d rom and after I booted up I got the com.google.process.gapps force close and none google apps are working (I could receive emails and sync my contacts).
I already searched forums and tried following :
- Flash basefile before flashing rom (did not work)
- Flashed CyanogenMod again (did not work)
- So I restored using nandroid and it works great
But problem is if I wipe before flashing new rom I get the same message....
Has anybody any idea how to fix this.
Thank You
A lot of people have problems flashing old defanged base rom, I don't know why. 1.9.3 Super-D will get you Google apps (updated ones) so you can update to the latest.
You need to
Wipe everything (and I mean everything)
Flash Super-D 1.9.3
Reboot, sign-in and let it load
Reboot, flash 1.10.3
Flash MMS update
Fix permissions
Reboot and enjoy.
Good luck.

no market or welcome guide

Hey so My buddy got my old G1 when i upgraded to my EVO, i loved that phone...
so when i sold it to him i put on 2.2 cm6 all was well he loved it..
now the outer day the phone went blank. says it will not get passed the G1 logo. cant get to recovery eater.
he brought the phone over and i was able to flash the recovery back with fast boot.(says the danger spl is still there) and then loaded cm6 and gapps back.
after boot up we did not get the welcome screen/guide and there is no market app.
there is no Vending.apk in the system/app folder.
tried copying form net to phone but there was "no space avable" after the remount of /system. deleted the quickoffice.apk and then was able to copy Vending.apk rebooted and no Market still.
used rom manger to partition sdcard to ext. thinking no room on g1 for all of 2.2?? dot remember this but ok. reloaded cm6 and gapps still no market.
so where did i go wrong? what did i miss? help please!!!
Maybe you flashed the wrong version of Gapps? Try a full wipe and try again. Just an idea..
I had to install the setup wizerd first. Then vending.apk installed with out error.
