Except for Cyanogen's rom (which is good) I'd like to try some others, as dxtop runs pretty slow on my dream.
Anyways, I use the EBl1 radio, obviously and the tutorial at Cyanogen's site says: Avoid themes, enhancements, add-ons or anything else that writes to the kernel. Be very sure before installing a theme that it is EBI1-friendly.
So if themes can affect the custom kernel surly custom roms wont work either? I'd just like a very fast rom, maybe to try out eclair or a hero build or something

Maybe you should try the Q&A section. You have over 100 posts i would be led to believe that you would know how to use this forum and not spam it with Q&A. At least not in the DEV section, that is Intended for DEV purposes.
You're right, I'll move this. Apologies.

there was no need to make a separate post for this as one of the moderators moved the original post
Oh.
This is the part when I feel like an idiot
Sorry
I was considering re-rooting my G-1, and am fully capable of doing it without help, as i had it set up before cupcake's official release, on JF's cupcake rom. Mainly, i would like a 2.x Rom, that EVERYTHING WORKS ON!
I see a lot of different roms to flash, and basically want all the functionality of 1.6 stock plus the added perks of 2.x......
I see tons of roms with either camera not working, unstable, needs a different radio flash etc. Is there a 2.x rom, all inclusive of stock 2.x?? If there was a promise of an ota to eclair, i would just wait for it,but the only talk for the g1 and eclair are rumours....
reading through all the change logs to try and find one that everything works on is making my brain numb, and its all starting to sound like jibberish. I don't care about themes, as i like to set up my own homescreens, wallpa[er, widgets, etc...
any help would be appreciated, as i am not a develper and some of what the change logs show does not make sense to me, so if something in the rom says unstable/not working, i really don't want it to avoid functionality issues...
thanks in advance
JD
There is not a rom that everything works because we are missing the drivers, thats why Camcorder and Video playback dosnt work on any Eclair rom. There are stable roms, like Manup v1.5 and KingxOver (not sure, but KingKlick + Herver = Good rom.) But you wont find a complete Eclair rom on the whole internet, so stop looking for it...want a fast and stable complete Donut rom, i suggest you to try CSDI v1, wich is totally amazing.
Stick with 1.6 custom roms for now until the development of 2.x is fully compatible and problem free. Unless you can provide technical data and good feedback to those developers just play it safe and content.
See my signature, tried and true its one of the fastest 1.6 Roms there is. Try it and you will see with your own eyes.
Okay. As you can see by my post count I'm a newb to ALL of this, so please be patient.
I just recently, within the last week maybe, got a HTC Hero. I immediately updated to 2.1. (No custom rom or anything, my device is not even rooted.)
I honestly do not want a custom rom. To me they almost all look ugly and I have a feeling they're not as stable. Either way, I don't want one.
I do, however, want to overclock my phone. Is there a way to do this without getting a custom rom that removes/adds stuff?
Thank you.
To overclock, you have to root.
I think Jus10o has posted a flashable kernel that allows overclocking on any Sprint-based 2.1 ROM, including stock, but I am not sure. I imagine he'll chime in if he has.
Just out of curiosity, what is that you don't like about custom ROMs? Fresh ROM (not FreshToast) is basically the official ROM made more stable. A lot of people have a lot more problems with the official ROM than they do with custom ROMs, or so my experience has gone. Sprint and HTC fix problems once a year (it seems..) where as the devs here hop on problems with their ROMs instantly. Most get things fixed the same week they're noticed.

Okay. Thank you. I suppose my next step is to look at how to root my phone and finding that kernel..
As far as custom ROMs go, I don't see a need for one. The ONLY issue I have with my phone is the occasional lag, which I would hope to fix with an overclock. Not even sure that would help it, but I want to try it anyway.
Thanks for the help.
Are there any themes available for the new zenherofx lite? ive looked everywhere and cant find any
You should be able to use almost any Sense 2.1-based theme... for example ones that work for Fresh, nfinitefx's stock ROM, etc. The only ones that will for sure not work are ones for darchdroid since it is AOSP based and not Sense. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong
Yes, this is pretty much correct 8 or 9 times out of 10. Pay attention to which ROM the themes and mods say they are made for, cuz not all of them work on any ROM and may mess up your phone. Always nandroid backup before trying anything. Most of the ones for Fresh and DamageControl *should* work on nfinitefx45 ROMs, but aren't always guaranteed cuz of the differences in the frameworks.
Check out this 2.1 Catalog thread for a huge collection of themes, mods, etc.
My girlfriend's old flip phone broke, so I set her up on my old G1 with cyanogen 4.
She likes it but it is android 1.6 so a lot of apps don't work.
I see a lot of roms talking about flashing radios and such and am lost (I am spoiled by safestrap on my D4).
Was looking for a good gingerbread or later rom that will function (calls, wifi, gps,bt,audio, camera, etc) and a detailed how to on flashing the rom and any required radios/kernals/etc. I tried cyanogen 6.1, but it kept rebooting.
Thanks in advance.
EzGingerbread is very stable and eeks just about every last drop of speed the old G1 is capable of providing. The opening post of that thread has pretty extensive instructions.
He also provides links to older versions of apps that work well. Newer versions of some apps like Maps are just too bloated to run on the G1.

Check out Royalknight6190s ROM Bible, and my recently posted G1 Oracle. I would recommend Feoyo by Laszlo, or any of the variants. Gingerbread is not a great idea on the G1. Take a look in the G1 XDA wiki for guides. Google's a good resource as well.
Do your own research if you want a ROM that lives up to your OWN personal needs. Which will probably be speed on a G1. So go for something old and lightweight.
Also, this is a development forum this thread should be in Q&A.
I agree that Froyo by Lazlo was a good build, but you will need to flash a different kernel over it - either Farmatito's or EZTerry's. There's a known battery drain bug with the stock kernel.
thanks for the input guys, I finally hunted down the old hboot and danger spl files, as well as a tiny gapps and have cm6.1 on it.
I might have to add in the EZTERRY 14mb hack, but that will have to come later.
