Hi all. I am posing a new challenge with our Shift. This is to replace the part of this device WM motherboard. I would appreciate the collaboration on this thread and the contributions of disadvantages, problems and possible solutions for this somewhat complicated task of hardware and software but not impossible.
First thing that the who understand know the options (and so their advantages and disadvantages) is that the candidates to merge with the Shift are a HTC universal and a Toshiba Portege G810.
To get started on this I would like to provide ratings on basis of which of the two options is better in terms of quality.
Below, in my view, advantages and disadvantages of both devices:
HTC Universal;
ADVANTAGES;
- During the two years that I have used, I have not had any problem or original ROM or custom.
- Operation BT, WF, SDHC and GSM, GPRS, HDPA, etc... perfect.
- Already have physical and therefore port connection (advantage) keyboard.
- Headphone speakers and 3.5 mm stereo.
- Processor to 525 very stable MH
- And of course, is HTC.
DISADVANTAGES;
- Disadvantage, the motherboard is very large, and can cause problems to locate in the Shift.
- Very little RAM and ROM memory (although until now I was enough to have SDHC)
- Has no internal GPS antenna (is not a big problem)
- Impossible to install WM 6.5 ROM (this is not essential, but would be brilliant WM 6.5 and W7 Ultimate already installed)
Toshiba G810:
ADVANTAGES;
- I had problems with this device since change the original ROM. Currently with ROM WM6.5 (excellent for my)
- Excellent size WM mother board to join the Shift.
- Also perfect wireless operation.
- RAM and ROM perfect and perfectly withstand WM 6.5.
- GPS antenna internal and functional.
DISADVANTAGES;
- It has no physical keyboard (I think, not I have to remove it even, to see if you have physical port full or only for hardware that has keys). The know this weekend.
- Has no output 3.5 mm.
- No output speaker stereo.
- Processor to 400 MH (same as original processor Shift)
- Isn't HTC.
After this, a brief description of the problems that I think would resolve to operate the full Shift.
- Knowing the current Motherboard of the Shift operation voltage.
- Communication with motherboard PC, i.e. through the port mini-USB these devices? I think is the most logical.
- There will be problems with the operating system change button (toggle WinMO with W7)
- Port connection hardware (touch screen, keyboard physical, etc.)
- Button powering up Shift would boot WInMo or place hardware appliance's power button.
- Shift control Center official Windows CE C++ application soft reset, enable / disable modem, etc. Or would need to rewrite code.
This sounds like a monumental task and I wish you success. It would be cool if we'd be
able to replace the current WinMo side with a more functional Mobo, but alarm bells
start ringing when I think of how to keep functionality between the two OS'es.
By all means please keep investigating. I got a Universal to spare if the howto's are published some day
THX.
Lucid Hello. If you think that it is a task difficult, although not impossible. Nor do I think a better place and more solidarity to publish a project like this boot. Thank you to stop writing in this thread, and recalls that any comments or information will be valuable contribution. Best regards.
ivs..
I wish you the best of luck on this project.
However, I think the biggest challenge yet is to find a WM device with a motherboard that has the same dimensions and connectors as the one in the Shift. You can probably forget about using the Universal for this as the Shift has VERY limited space available inside.
These pictures from the FCC is showing the WM motherboard and placements of connectors. You can compare these images with similar ones from devices like the Universal.

That's because what you see in the picture is the SIM-card slot, not the SD-slot
Hello and thanks for the interest and moral support. And in particular thanks to Deadnex for these images. I came very good to view the port connection of two boards, as well as the distribution of different items of hardware to keep in mind. Really, thank you Deadnex. Only one thing more, I could indicate the source from which to get the images, please?! There are more images?
Well, on the other hand, thanks to this graphic material, haven't had to wait to completely dismantle my Shift (is my utensil working more essential and.... UFFF, best dismount when this all OK), jejejeee....
Now a small summary of what I have been figuring out through the above grateful now:
Firstly, to apologise for having my careless thread, but closing the year with regard to work this still apotheosic. Be grateful for your patience and understanding in this regard. Thanks a lot.
-Said, the first thing that is clear is that impossible to find a PDA Board with the same connector as the original, because it is an adapted and exclusive design for the shift. It is therefore more essential balance size or their distribution within the Shift that the connector (in principle).
-Moreover, the next task is the identify the purpose and distribution of each connector pins (not must be hard, follow the path of the plate). That is, in one of the images provided by Deadnex, identified 60 pins unless escape me something or not can see in the image, these should correspond to the keyboard, screen, sound of the PDA, connection to PC connection with PC and PDA via the PC Board power port USB headphones 3.5 mm audio output (although I think that this can be two tabs that are seen in the image).
-Also there are other elements of the PDA Board I have not even clear hardware. Tonight i posted image stating what I mean, to see if someone has light to contribute.
However, as I said in the first post, any contribution can be valuable, for example, specify the operating voltage of the original PDA Board and the part of the Shift PC SDHC slot. I am quite concerned that.
But all that leais this thank you, and those that aporteis something, because even more thanks. Jejejeee
Happy holidays to all and happy new year.
A greeting.

I did some tests here and need help with finding some USB drivers for WM6.1 to have the flash show up in the OS as well under the bootloader.
This works. Please try Yourself befor flaming.
The Diamond has USB on the Go features.
I have not yet been able to power the USB device from the Diamond as I do not have 11 pin mini usb connector with all pins attached inside.
I just took a USB flash stick from the shelf and formatted it to FAT32.
put a firmware image (shine08.nbh) on it.
renamed it to DIAMIMG.NBH.
powered up the phone with vol down and right button held in.
pressed power button when the phone had found the image on the memstick to start flashing.
nbh file is the only file needed on the memstick.
no computer needed to do the flashing.
It is all described in te confidential service manual except of the cable used(it is just mentioned as the USB Y cable).
The cable works as this:
The gnd and usb signals goes from the phone to the USB memstick connector.
The USB memstick connector gets power from an external 5 volt supply (or a PC usb port,flyppy,hdd.....)

Phone: HTC Touch Diamond
Hi there,
I'm new here and not yet owner of an xda, but it's already dispatched at the sellers'.
Thanks go to zeb crs for working this possibility out. As soon as I can, I'll begin working on the problem, and be it writing a new driver. An usb host is really the most important feature to add to my xda, because I always have a copy of my Music and Files with me on a wd passport drive. For power problems, I plan to build a 5V AA-Powersupply for charging the xda and powering the hdd.
If anyone knows of new things I should consider, please tell me!
Just a thought
Not sure if I'm really telling people stuff they already know, but it's just a bit of food for thought...
There's so many posts about this that it's impossible to answer answer the right questions in the right posts, and give everyone a nice wholesome answer, so I'm just going to use this one...
Somewhere in some post, someone mentioned that trying to power a USB while connected to the Diamond could possibly short the phone and destroy it... Well, taking to things into consideration, I don't think it's exactly an issue:
1) the Diamond is charged via the mini-USB port, so whouldn't the power just be going to the same place anyway...?
2) the Y-cable used in the 'top secret' service manual is basically doing just that - you simply use a Y-cable to get the power source to the USB drive - this would be because the diamond will not power out frmo the mini-USB
Ok, so those are my thoughts there...
My other thoughts were that many years ago, I came across an old iPAQ, which came with a special sleeve you could 'plug' it into, which included a spot for external memory - the iPAQ itself did not come with an external memory slot...
So why can't a similar thing be done for the Diamond...?
Take one of those 'extender' battery kits http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15622 and do a bit of crafting on it to include power direct from the batter to an external memory slot all included in the enlarged battery cover... that should take care of the 'carring extra cables and other rubbish' issue that people brought up...
Sure, the Diamond will be a bit thicker (but not too thick) plus you'll get some extra battery life...
Sure this doesn't help with any of the driver issues, or the fact the Dimond has to be reset with the buttons pushed at the right time to trigger 'USB host' mode, but I feel that there are enough clever people out there (much cleverer than me) who could possibly write a simple add-on program that you could initiate which would reste the diamond in the right way to trigger the hosting mode, and while it might not be possible to use the Diamond as a phone in the trigger mode, perhaps instead, it could swap a designated portion of the internal memory with the memory on the external storage device - live swap the video and music folders - that way you're just now accessing stuff you couldn't access before, and since you can't listen to 2 songs at once, it doesn't really matter that you can't access the folders that you just swapped out...
I hope that makes sense...
anyway, just some thoughts - hope it's useful to someone....
Oh, and I guess some drivers could be sourced off the Pro... (maybe)

This cable seems to be designed for the Willcom W-Zero3 [es], which features USB host capabilities. So the cable should be connectable to the Diamond, but the lack of drivers will remain as a problem.
A cable alone will not work (trust me, I've tried it just to check)...
Firstly, you need to activate the USB-Host function on the diamond (Soft reset with some other buttons pushed - can't remember what it was though)
Secondly, you need power to the USB device - the Diamond itself will not deliver power to the USB port...
This is why you need the Y cable with so both power and the usb are connedcted to the Diamond...
hey everyone i found this http://forum.ppcwarez.org/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=58813 cant this help us with the usb host for the diamond
Hi all.
I made an Y cable powered with +5V and it really works in Trigger Mode.
Zeno drivers will not work for us, we need OTG drivers for our phones.
I hope someday a developer will give a try with this.
Here's some links:
Here's some code samples
http://www.jungo.com/st/win_ceusb.html
And here's a teardown that maybe useful (or not).
http://www2.electronicproducts.com/HTC_Diamond_P3700-whatsinside-73.aspx
At Platform Builder there's some guides to develop our wished drivers too....
Hi everybody,
This post just to confirm Zeb and Lilitz facts.
After reading all the posts about "Does the Diamond support USB host ?", i decided to try myself:
- connect a self powered hard drive to the Diamond with an USB cable, the one used for another hard drive which is OTG (don't know the particularities of the cable)
- soft reset + vol down + back
- bypass flash from internal storage (have a DIAMIMG.nbh on internal storage)
- the Diamond trigger USB host and wake up the hard drive
So does it ensure that the diamond has host (at least OTG) USB hardware capabilities ? For me, the answer is yes...
But, with the same hard drive, the Zeno drivers don't work.
bump
up..............
I wrote to HTC to have more informations about OTG Diamond's capabilities. Here is the answer:
Dear Sir, Unfortunately, your queries extend beyond the capabilities of our technical support centre. Officially, none of the functions you have mentioned are supported, although it may indeed be possible. For more information, I recommend you contact our developer team in writing at: HTC Headquarters 23 Hsin Hua Rd., Taoyuan 330, Taiwan, Republic Of China Email contact is not accepted by our developers. Personally I dont ever liked the original VW dashboard, it's really boring, doesnt have nothing, not even a 'cool' radio.
So, 2 years ago we put one new radio that supports usb playing (WOW! Even when I got home, I stay in the car just to hear music), new wiring sound cables and some new Pioneer columns.
The paintjob its pretty damaged by now, so we start recovering it this year, all motor parts being veryfied.
TO DO LIST
Painting it with EWP WHITE BRANQUISE _link, black roof.
2.4 diesel engine and fuel pump revised, all oils changed, timing belt changed,
new tires, new rims, new brake pads and discs, new full exhaust system
Lights: daylights led using old headlights, xenon kit, led stop lights (3rd stop led bar too),
all domelights changed to LED, license plate light changed to led, odometer led
Extra: New dash (home-made) with Nexus 7, start button, parking sensors,
all interior has been cleaned and renewed.

I bought a HD-3000 webcam thats connected via otg and hub. Reading this post u will know that is possible to connect webcams and uvc sticks+cctv cam.
All devices must be UVC-COMPLIANT, check this list: __link
After this, i've been testing dashcam apps like DailyRoads, AutoGuard, AutoBoy, iOnRoad. For me, till now, the best with my configuration is DailyRoads (and because its a free app)
If you have OBD2 BT adapter you can also use Torque + Track recorder plugin.
This configuration will disable your front cam. redeyedjedi said that found a way to make both work, but I already try it and get stuck on bootloader.
Anyone please try his solution: __link

After mainly lurking on the forums for a while, I decided to embark on a Nexus 7 Installation as I wanted to have to same features found in newer vehicles in my 2000 Mazda Protege. The only problem is I didn't want a permanent installation and didn't find previous posts to be complete enough other than to get some ideas from. I didn't like the fixed installation because the screen in most setups doesn't face the driver and doesn't appear to be useful. In addition, I wanted to be able to remove it especially in the summer when conditions in the car may be dangerous to the device itself.
The goal of this post is to give very detailed account of the setup up, how it works, and what my future plans for improvement are. I would also like to try and answer as many questions as possible for people considering doing the same with their own devices.
Video
First off, we'll start with a quick video of the installation in action. It may seem a little low in volume in the video but all of the sounds and music are playing through the car's speakers. As such, you can make it as loud as anyone could possible want.
Pictures
First up is the view from about where the driver would see. In reality, the steering wheel does not obstruct the screen.

Next is where the hub is currently placed. I don't yet want it completely hidden because the signal strength is displayed on the freedompop stick. It can be pushed down and out of sight from here.
And the hub in all its glory.
This is the view from the back where you can see the fish eye lens protruding from the trunk lid.
And now with the lens removed. Its still unfinished but I wanted to get a working prototype. I just need to sand down and seal the opening to prevent rust.
The MIMO antenna for data connection is just attached to the passenger's headrest for now. The wires are pretty short so it may end up staying here for now.
The FM antenna is currently placed in the back by the rear window. I live pretty far from the station so I needed something bigger for a clean signal.
A view of the power inverter. The hub takes up the plug while the Nexus is powered via the USB port.
And finally, a diagram showing the buttons of the bluetooth remote and what they do.

Hardware Set Up
The Nexus 7 is mounted on the dash with the tablet mount, facing the driver. Its placement allows for easy viewing while not obstructing vision. From there, a 3.5mm audio cable runs for the headphone jack out into a PAC Ground Loop Isolator to eliminate the alternate whine and other electrical interference. This finally plugs into the AUX input of a cheap aftermarket radio I installed to replace the stock.
Coming out of the micro usb port is a Micro USB OTG Cable with power which connects to a powered USB Hub. The hub and device are powered by a 12V Power inverter. Everything should be able to be powered just through the OTG cable but I was having some charging issues early on which I rectified by disabling some apps from logging and constantly using the GPS but I kept the setup as it worked well.
On the hub are the Freedompop Bolt, RTL2832U dongle, and USB extension. The Freedompop Bolt I got a deal on over the summer which gives me a gig of free data every month which the Nexus used for its primary data connection. The signal strength can vary pretty dramatically out in NC where I am so I also installed a MIMO Antenna to improve reception and also have cell tethering as a backup in a pinch. The RTL2832U dongle is connected to the passive antenna for better FM reception which required some adapters listed in the Hardware Section. The USB extension cable runs from the dash, under the seats into the trunk where it connects to the USB webcam mounted in the trunk lid. I drilled a hole through which a fisheye lens attached to give me the backup cam.
Connected to underneath the dash is the bluetooth OBDII adapter which feeds realtime data to the Nexus and is displayed on Torque Pro. I enjoy knowing as much as possible about the car and actually end up using this display over the instrument cluster.
The final piece of hardware is the bluetooth remote mounted on the steering wheel. The buttons are remapped to various apps allowing complete control of the Nexus just using the left hand. It only took about a day to completely memorize everything which allows it to be operated without taking my eyes off the road.
Software Set Up
On the software side, The Nexus is running USB ROM with Timur's kernel which provides a fantastic base to start from when it comes to car installations. In addition, redeyedjedi's mod was installed which allows for hotswapping of the webcam as long as it was plugged in at boot. This means once everything is set up correctly, I can remove the tablet for whatever reason and when I plug in the USB again, everything works like it did before without any reboot needed.
Torque Pro is used to read and display all of the realtime information as mentioned before. SDR Touch taps into the RTL2832U dongle to give me live FM radio which is controlled via the bluetooth remote. I have the mainstays of Spotify and iHeartRadio for music in case I have poor reception of radio or just feel like something different.
Getting the webcam to work was tricky because most apps have the display rotated 90 degrees are have too low a refresh rate such that the feed to too choppy to be useful. I ended up installing Mirror because it gives me the correct orientation of the image and has a high enough refresh rate.
Like any good setup up, the Nexus is used for Navigation which is quite nice on the large, 7'' screen compared to my HTC One which I used to use. Google Now can be launched via the bluetooth remote allowing for voice commands to be given to set the location. Having all of the media run through the Nexus means that when navigation is speaking, the other sounds are muted and the directions can be heard clearly. This eliminated the problem of having the GPS drowned out by the radio which happened all too often with my old setup. It should be noted that I cannot yet get SDR Touch to muted or lower its volume when Navigation is speaking yet so that can be a problem sometimes.
Anyways, this is meant for people to follow along if they would like, get some inspiration for their own projects, as well as get some feedback on my own and how it can be improved. As of right now, I'm not looking to completely hide everything because it's all still being tested. I am, however, looking for some thing which can be added on to possibly make it even better. Some things I have already considered are putting a bunch of music on a flash drive for another source of music in case of poor FM and data reception.
Awesome work, i'll try to follow it. thanks for this guide
Is the dash mount sturdy enough to reduce vibrations/shakiness from driving?

Yep! I love this mount. It is solidly stuck to the dash and the Nexus doesn't move at all even when you hit a pothole or something.
Also, if you are using this guide as a reference, I am testing a new radio antenna setup. The dipole I was using was too directionally dependent and I would lose signal depending on the car's orientation. I'm testing a set up where I splice into the car's antenna and so far it seems to be working well. Once I finalize the setup, I'll update the OP.
This is awesome. In the back of my mind I've been thinking about doing similar, it's so awesome to see it in action. Good work!

Interesting setup with all the extra antennas!
Question about the cam...
You mentioned refresh rates and all. What about lag or delay? Is there a delay in the video when it hits your screen?
Or was that fixed with the Mirror app?
Nice setup. I have a question about your FreedomPop dongle. When your Nexus comes out of sleep mode, does it automatically reconnect to the dongle/4G? I have one as well, and it worked fine when I tested it on my bench but once installed it doesn't seem to want to work.
Backup Cam (Mirror)
Can you please post a link to the Backup Camera App you have used... After much searching I still cannot find it...
This is the ugliest car install I've seen, obviously aesthetics aren't an important factor for you.

That's the ugliest comment I've seen. Obviously, reading the post wasn't important to you. There's no reason to hide it and make it look good if it's still in a testing phase for different items.
Great post aviola, interesting choices in parts and a very good breakdown for people to gain ideas from. Very good point about keeping it removable, because summer car heat can really obliterate pieces/devices that are out unprotected.
:good:
thanks so much for this guide. :good:
Sorry for the delayed responses. With the semester finishing up, I keep forgetting to come back to this thread

I have no real issues when it comes to lag. Initially, when I was using camera applications, there was a good 1 second delay between what the camera saw and what the screen showed. Installing the mirror app reduced the lag to a point I don't notice it anymore.

Here is the link for the Mirror app I have been using:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yuvalluzon.mirror
In terms of updates, I have successfully tied the tuner into my car antenna for the best reception. I installed a splitter so that the car radio and usb tuner can be connected simultaneously. SDR is good but doesn't do as well with poor reception and there are some times I would rather just use the radio rather than the whole setup.
I'm still having power issues where the the screen on max and GPS navigation use more power than the tablet gets. I'll probably do some testing with a multimeter to see how much power is actually getting to the tablet but for now I have to take the Nexus in about once a week for a full charge up.
Aesthetically, I don't have any plans as of yet to hide all of the wires. I'm constantly swapping stuff in and out and don't want the hassle of dealing with running them through the dash or anything. As the majority of people have correctly observed, this is a proof concept rather than a formal installation. My objective in posting this was not to provide a complete step by step guide for people to follow as there are already several excellent threads devoted to this. This was meant for people to get ideas from so they could build their own installations with their own equipment.
Thanks everyone for all of the positive feedback. For anyone with questions, feel free to continue to ask and I will do my best to be more timely about answering them. If you need more in depth or specific information, that's really what this thread is all about. I anticipate changes to my setup will come slowly but I'll try and update this with the ones that have been proven to work.

Hello!
I guess you already checked this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...8-air-3g-tablet-9-7-2048x1536-t2913035/page43
There you can see thousands of opinions, and better, how to install real dual boot meaning Android and Windows of your choice when you switch on the tablet. I have installed dual boot and it is awesome (although still a lot of doubts).
BR
Hi, I was wondering if there's anyway to install windows without a USB hub?
[REVIEW] Teclast X98 Air 3G dual boot
Here you are my personal review after using
Almost four years have already run since I bought my first tablet up to the date, I've been using it quite a lot, upgrading to the different Android versions and of course trying all possible custom ROMs that I found interesting.
But after this years, not only the OS, also the specs have changed in a interesting way, of course making all the devices much more powerfull. And my old Acer Iconia A500 was asking me for a replacement more capable of following nowadays rythm.
So I started looking, comparing,... and of course talking. We all know that iPads and Samsung tablets are a safe option, but you are really paying for them, sometimes more than enough.
And by the other hand, I have the chance of knowing from first hand sellers (like Etotalk with whom I talk often via Skype) that can share their experience with me.
In the past years I have tried (quite) a few different smartphones and other gadgets, in a way that I have realized that, Chinese doesn't mean bad quality, it just mean “double check before buying”. So that I have found some awful products not working at all, and I have found really good quality devices. For some of which I have already done reviews sharing my good impressions (and the points of improvement!).
Having said that, I was recommended to take the Teclast X98 Air 3G, which brings something that I found really really attractive: dual boot.
I already know (tablets, tv box and smartphones) how Android does on the mobile market but, Windows?
I have used quite a lot Windows Phone 8 on Lumia smartphones, I saw real improvements with the first updates, and they are very nice to use mobiles BUT with a lot of limitations on tasks that I can do on daily basis with iPhone or Android. It's true that the ecosystem of applications is growing but sometimes not fast enough or (mainly) not with the quality you are expecting. With huge differences between Microsoft or Nokia applications or 3rd party apps. Still a lot of work to do, hopefully solved (at least partially) with the arrival of Windows 10.
Having said that... Yes! I took it that tablet with a lot of expectations and first one met was that it was at home only 3 days after ordering it

Packaging and design
Very nicely packaged, with a “potato-plastic” bag covering the tablet, then in a second layer we find, a plastic protector for the screen, , the USB cable, an OTG USB cable, warranty card, anti-radiations sticker (yes first time I see it) and the charger (US plug) which is of 2.5A!! simply amazing, but we need to have into consideration the size of this battery (I’ll come back later).
I must mention here that everything is on Chinese. I don’t consider it a real issue because being honest, normally nobody reads the papers, we all know that once any device arrives first thing we do is booting it. And probably charge it.
I leave you this video I recorded for the unboxing (for the moment in Spanish I’ll translate it soon).
Maybe after this video, there is not much to say about the design, but I'm doing a review so... let's start with the front clean and simple view. Nothing but the big screen occupying almost the full surface and the tiny 2Mpx on the top. As said, very clean design (reminds me an iPad) but sincerely many times when using I'm missing some button.
On the left side we have both, the power/lock button and the volume up/down one, on the same just at the bottom, the slots for microSD card (up to 64GB) and the SIM card.
Moving to the bottom side of the tablet, we will find the plugs for micro USB cable, jack 3.5 and micro HDMI. Which leaves us the right and the top sides completely free of buttons or slots.
Turning the tablet, on the rear part, we have the main 5Mpx camera on the top and two speakers on the bottom. On the middle just “Intel inside” logo. Below that “X98” mark and again a lot of Chinese stuff.
Hardware and specifications
As I said on the beginning, the hardware has evolved quite a lot on the last years. I would point that one of the main surprises of this device is that it brings an Intel Atom processor (not very common on mobile devices), but take a look to the rest, it’s not bad at all:

Battery Built-in Lithium Battery: 8500mAh
Screen
The Teclast X98 Air 3G is equipped with a 9.7 inches IPS screen with a very good resolution of 2048x1536.
Once we remove the sticker that comes with the tablet covering the screen, we quickly realize about the quality of this screen, the image and colors are greatly appreciated, and the angles of vision are very wide, no need to be just in front of.
The bright levels are very good, allowing to select very low bright or very high bright, however I'm missing here the option of automatic bright. Normally it comes with every smartphone, and even my old tablet has it. Here I have to select manually the level I want and it doesn't adapt to new conditions, so a point to improve here.
This tablet includes the Intel HD Graphics chipset, what I would say makes more complicated to compare with other devices where we know more about their GPU capabilities (i.e. the common Mali GPUs).
Up to now I have had no issues playing games or with HD videos, so I would say that this chipset makes its job.
Inside the settings, we see a new line for enabling Intel video improvements, but there no further description, so I just enabled it hoping to get the most of my tablet. As I told before the quality of image and watching videos (online/offline) is very good at every moment.
Software and multimedia
This is probably one of the main strengths of the Teclast X98 Air 3G. There are not many tablets allowing dual boot in such an easy way. As said a few times already, it comes with an Intel CPU, which means it can run Windows (not only Android as most of tablets) and... leave open the door to Linux, since... it's an Intel CPU!
I have read many questions about this model and how to use the dual boot function. In my case it's very easy (maybe as part of the customization by Etotalk) since every time I boot it, it asks me which system I want to use.
By default it remembers the last one I used and will boot it after 10 seconds, but I repeat, I don't need to change anything or enable whatever to access that dual boot screen every time.
Once again, this menu is in Chinese, so... I luckily there is only one button on that screen and it's for “OK”, they should have translated some more things to English at least.
Going into both OS:
Android works very well, smoothly as on any new device and (good point) with a few applications already pre-installed (mainly thinking on GooglePlay which give us access to all the market).
I sincerely don't like the default launcher, not allowing me to use widgets or having on the desktops only the apps I want and leaving all the rest for the menu. So one of first things I did was installing another launcher. I tried some free ones from Play, all work well so I just left the one I liked more by its design.
I have tried many applications and some games and no one single error or incompatibility message. Kodi, WPS, Maps, Asphalt 8, MX Player, VLC,...
Talking about connectivity, no surprises here. The WiFi connects very fast and I didn't suffer any unexpected disconnection. It's equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, which recognises, pairs and transmit fast enough, I tried with Digicare DO headphones and the quality of sound was excellent.
I know everybody will be expecting now the comments about the 3G WCDMA that brings the attention to this concrete model. And I must confess... also to myself. So I inserted the SIM (normal size) on the slot that can be found on the side and it didn't do anything... my mistake Plane Mode enabled
Now yes. SIM card detected, searching for networks... different ones available. I left itself do the choice and suddenly I received the provider's SMS with the config and tariffs information. Good job Teclast!
I couldn't resist then, I call to that number from my mobile... and I could answer the call! It's true with almost 10” is not a comfortable gadget to talk, but sincerely. I appreciate the option, we can always use a BT hands-free, and it allows us to send SMS, use whatsapp on a tablet, etc. very useful!
Finally the OTG function using the included cable was better than I though, very fast transference of files.
Time to shift to Windows. Once started I see more chinese menus and words that I found on Android's first boot. After going to the control panel and changing language and regional settings almost everything is now on English (because I choose that language) although there still some (isolated) words on Chinese.
After some days using, I've found that some of the applications were installed from the Chinese Store, so by removing them and installing again they are in the correct language
It's an improvement, but In settings for example the words “bluetooth” and “3G network” still appear in mandarin.
In the past years I have been using mainly Linux on the laptop and iOS or Android on mobile devices (except for that period using WindowsPhone). So I was completely new to Windows 8.1
It's maybe a little early to say it but, this tablet has made me love Windows 8.1. I feel I have a full computer on my hands, being able to execute programs, not only mobile applications. And Office 365 is included for one year!! with 1TB of OneDrive storage. This alone already made more than one third of the cost of this tablet.
I have told a few times lately: I like the route Microsoft is taking in the last times but... once more I'm delighted on how well their services work altogether.
Where's then the “but”? Of course there is. Again, need to improve the ecosystem of mobile applications, however it's not a problem on this device since you can run real programs planned for the desktop version.
I'm not still an expert on this Windows. I must confess that I'm still booting Android for many things, but each time I use this Windows I enjoy simply exploring new options or features of the system, playing with apps I found and trying different stuff...
For the connectivity, same impression, all works more than properly, fast WiFi, good BT, 3G networks at good speed too. No complains at all. Like in Android, the OTG function works very fast.
Camera
I'll start saying that on every (or almost every tablet) I've tried/used the cameras are quite deceiving (probably except for the iPads) despite the number of megapixels announced.
What happens here? Exactly the same, both cameras offer I would say a poor quality when taking pictures, a little bit better for videos. And we don't flash for the main one.
Is that all? For sure not! I didn't know where to handle this subject, so at the end I left for this section. Skype works amazing! Connects fast, great video quality, fluid in both ways and the sound higher than in many smartphones or tablets.
I was surprised with the quality of the video-conference, after trying the camera app... but I don't know, maybe is the way Skype handles the image, the result was very very good.
Maybe the point is not as much recording as playing or editing video, since both in Windows and in Android, we have a full set of apps for editing our videos. Some of them are included, the rest can be downloaded for free from each Store.
Autonomy and battery
Maybe you passed the specifications table from the beginning quite fast but... did you realize this Teclast X98 Air 3G has a 8500 mAh battery? Yes, it's huge!
It means that it will allow us to use it for longer and, when it's time to charge it, the charger included being 2.5A helps a lot on this task, it will take around 3 hours for a full charge, so quite similar to the time a smartphone will take to charge.
Since it uses a standard micro USB for charging (thanks god!), we can use the same charger and cable than for our smartphone. BUT, normally those chargers give an output power of 1A, so the charging time can be infinite. So better use the provided one.
Conclusions
No doubts we are facing a very very good product. It's not the cheap tablet that we can buy with coupons on the supermarket or with the newspaper. It's a powerful device that can offer us a lot.
The remarkable points (already mentioned most of them): dual boot which allows us to have the freedom of Android for playing and multimedia, but also the professionalism of Windows for working with Office or executing other software; simple and clean design with an excellent Retina Display; microSD expansion and 3G slots for improving storage and connectivity capabilities; fast quad-core Intel Atom CPU and Intel GPU,... and all that standing below 500 grams.
For the points that need improvement, I have already mentioned them a few times, and I will summarize them on: automatic brightness (I don't understand why it's not available) and please, less Chinese content on the package and on the tablet menus.
The price seems very correct for me. Specially when it includes VIP shipment with a trusted company like DHL, it's an extra since I have ordered a few times already to China and if you take the standard one, you can be waiting for one month.
If you liked the review, I would appreciate that you click on "Thanks!"
Great review ordered mine a few days ago...can't wait for it to arrive...this tablet will replace my netbook and Samsung tab
via OnePlus One
Happy you liked!
Great review!
Got mine for almost a month now, loving both android and Windows on it.
It was a little searching but it's possible to get rid of all Chinese test just by making sure (on windows) to set ALL region settings and user accounts to the language you want.
Bluetooth and 3g will also be translated that way.
Only thing that is still in Chinese is the dualboot selector, but I've seen on YouTube this can also be in English, don't know how though.
Good luck with your teclast, it is indeed a fun device!
Aaaaaaaand it's dead...
Tried flashing a new bios, no errors but upon restart: nothing...
It was fun while it lasted hahaha, waiting for the programming tool now...
..
Hi all!
I looked on the forums here and couldn't find anything about it... have you seen this CarPlay AI Box thing?
Seems like similar hardware as the Android headunits but on a dongle and then you connect it through USB and it streams via CarPlay. I think it's interesting for folks like me with a traditional headunit with Android Auto/CarPlay to have full access to Android.
Does anyone knows about it? I guess we could have the same options as the headunits such as custom firmwares or maybe figuring out what software does that CarPlay integration and use it from an Android phone - getting full Android access...
A link of it from AliExpress:

Expect it to be unfinished, unreliable, 'buggy as' and unsupported.
I have been looking at this as well. I'm going to order one as soon as my wife will let me probably a month or two from now.
To my knowledge nobody else seems to be utilizing car play as a generic display output with touch screen support.
I can't wait to get a hold of one of these and dump the firmware, if we can replicate how they interface, perhaps we can replicate it In software.
Imagine Apple car play as a primary display, as an installable magisk module.
That would solve the issues of Android crippling secondary displays for DRM. It would also hola many car units to be repurposed closer to their users need. But also help to minimize e-waste and unnecessary wasteful economic activity. Too much hardware goes to landfills because of lack of standardized interfaces for DIY upgrades.

That's what got me intrigued, how they manage to output to CarPlay! If it's purely software based then it might be ported.
I will try to get one of those to play around!
I have a idea for this little box. If I get or I figured out how to mimic ios for convince car head unit . I will install or creat mode for any android phone we had same configuration in our car low price.
Hope to see further developments of this Carplay AI
It solve the android HU poor sound quality and yet have fantastic experience of Android
Now this only runs on Android 7.
I think i find the solution which I guess this ai box using same method. Here is the think. Install android on raspberry pi and using usb c power port for triger car android auto system and run screen2auto app and viola here is own android tablet on your car android auto system.
did anyone figure out how to install a custom firmware on this Android Box. I am looking to connect a Bluetooth OBD dongle to this, but don't think the stock firmware allows anything other than Phone connection via Bluetooth.
Hi, could you share the firmware?
I try to install on Raspberry

Hi I have this version of AI box
https://www.alibaba.com/product-det...a2756.order-detail-ta-ta-b.0.0.5abb2fc2wCcoEN
There is also rebranded version from Joyeauto with 4GB RAM, generally it is the same product:

Joyeauto provides also download section for this device, where is a new ROM:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oyjsw7s4q6dmvrm/AADy_yP8FC3JqnIrgjZrK-Gea?dl=0
Is there anybody who can make custom rooted firmware?
Btw. It can be plugged to any Android phone/ tablet via Carlinkit Wried CarPlay Smart Link Dongle for Android https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33038683679.html
It works like in the car, it is good for playing with and installing in home.
Bluetooth is blocked only for phone connection. I plugged cheap BT dongle to the USB port of the AI box and now I can connect anything including of OBD2.
What is annoying is autohiding on-screen navigation panel. It would be better make the always visible navigation bar and all apks opening resized in the rest of the screen.
Generally it is pretty interesting and good working device.

did you had to install any other software to use the bt dongle? Or just plug it in and turn on Bluetooth on setting menu?
thanks!

I tried 3 different what I found at home and all work fine. No need to install any software or driver. These work: Gembird BTD-MINI5, Trust Bluetooth USB 4.0 Adapter , ASUS USB-BT400 . But I think you can try any.
One more thing: you need to access full settings to pair Bluetooth, I installed ADW launcher and there is access to all settings.
ADW Launcher 2 – Apps on Google Play
ADW Launcher 2, beyond tweaking your android desktop

ADW launcher would be fine set like default one. But they packed the factory launcher also with phone application, so you need to start both launchers. Then the Home button is launching factory launcher so it is better to use only the factory one. This would be solved by custom rom.

Thanks, I have ordered 2 seperate type of Bluetooth dongle. Will try later tonight.
just confirming you been able to connect a external devise (not your phone or a speaker/audio device) via Bluetooth? Where did you go in system setting to search for the Bluetooth devices?

Hi, I connected OBD2, also I tried to connect phone to this dongle, it works only for sound playing from the phone. Phone must be connected to the native BT for dialing and calling. You can use both BTs, native and dongle same time. Full android setting console is accessible when you run ADW launcher - there is a Setting icon among apks. Good luck with dongles.
Just received the BT dongle ($10 cheap ones). And it works perfectly fine!
thanks for all the help!
hopefully someone can make a customFirmware for this now. Also noticed the device already got Root access.

Hi I have this version of AI box
https://www.alibaba.com/product-det...a2756.order-detail-ta-ta-b.0.0.5abb2fc2wCcoEN
There is also rebranded version from Joyeauto with 4GB RAM, generally it is the same product:
https://www.joyeauto.com/mmb-multim...-for-the-cars-with-oem-factory-apple-carplay/
Joyeauto provides also download section for this device, where is a new ROM:
