im new to the rooting G1 thing, i have mno volume control while in calls and its REALLY annoying and also quite loud. im running cyanogenmod 4.2.9.1 and hadnt noticed this problem until today.
please, if anyone can help id REALLY appreciate it
EDIT: it seems like the volume goes from loud (when turned all the way "down") to louder (all the way "up") and theres a nearly unnoticeable difference in volume

I have experienced the same problem on the same ROM but never thought it was that big of an issue to start my own thread. But since you started on, I guess I will jump on the bandwagon. Sometimes the volume control problem is sporadic and it will work, but I havent really noticed when the times are that the volume works (like after a reboot). I'll try to take notice, also, I'm not sure a logcat would help otherwise I would provide it on the CM thread. Anybody want to weigh in on this and see if its worth raising the issue on the CM thread? If I can't produce a logcat then I doubt Cyanogen will be able to reproduce the problem and therefore will not be able to address the situation.
BTW, I also have Meltus's latest AudioHack. I figured I'd mention it since it has to do with the volume.
Hamtoast, do you have the AudioHack?
i dont have the audiohack, though i thought about getting it after i noticed this problem. i wasnt sure if itd help though and didnt want to shell out the $2 or however much it costs. my volume is otherwise fine and i have no other issues with it (like being too quiet, which is why most people get the audiohack to my understanding).
this issue we are experiencing is of course not of major importance and doesnt interfere with use, but personally i adjust volume regularly while on the phone, depending on my location and who im talking to. its rather inconvenient not being able to do it.
Okay, so the whole slight volume change was false, there is absolutely zero difference in volume during calls. I read somewhere that it could be an issue with the radio. i was planning on getting the newest radio and danger spl soon so as soon as i get a new sd card ill be testing that to see if the radio is the issue. i will also be trying a hero rom so if CM is the problem i will find that out.
I have a similar problem where my phone is one step from maximum volume (in call) it will not go up to max unless I press volume down them go up. I do not have the audio hack fyi. I guess it may be worth bringing up for cyano to prehaps work on because we r all running his rom with and without audio hack and having problems with volume. I am sure that others are havimg similar problems aswell.
I have the exact same problem. I am going to have to go to a different ROM because of this my phone is new and talking to most people is ear splitting.
i guess ill bring it up in a cyano forum or send a message or something. it certainly is annoying, and it does seem to be related to the ROM.
i dunno if you all are having this issue or if youve noticed or not but it could be related... anyway, if im using headphones and get a text or email or phonecall (anything requiring some sort of notification) i lose all sound to my phone until i reboot it. i checked the builds and it said he addressed some headset issue in 4.2.9.1 but it seems to be there still. just wonderin if anyone noticed that.
ill be looking into cyano forums and trying to find a fix.
@HamToast,
I have mostly noticed just general sound loss. Not anything really related to the headset. Notifications will drop out, phone won't ring sometimes, volume control problems etc. For example, right now, no matter how much I adjust the volume, the sound coming from the screen clicks are always the same volume.
Also, I have the latest radio and the Danger SPL so I'm not sure if that has any bearing on the sound issue. My signature is up to date with the exception of running both the latest CM build as well as the latest Amon_RA recovery image.
aw you have the latest radio and danger spl? im running older radio/spl and was hoping an upgrade would help
i wonder what the issue is with this sound buginess... i went to the newest CM 4.2.10.1 and it was so slow with a considerable amount of hangtime in certain apps, so i went back to 4.2.9.1. the sound issues werent fixed in x.10 or x.10.1

Hello All,
I searched first by the way :-/
Recently my Nexus has had its earpiece too loud for both Incoming and Outgoing Calls.
At first I thought it had something to do with the radio, so I downgraded. It actually worked on the first call but after that it was loud as heck even on the lowest volume.
I tried to retrace my steps with my applications next, but nothing that would point to the earpiece. The last apps installed updated where mostly games like Fruit Ninja and Aliens vs. Humans, so I think we can rule out that.
The specs in my sig should be up to date.
The only variable that has changed other than the ones listed above is the fact that I recently bought a Jawbone Icon Bluetooth Headset. But to my memory, this issue began before that.
Can't find a solution anywhere cause it seems most people have an issue with the phone being too soft lol.
I'm really looking for some help guys. I'm just short of wiping the phone clean and reinstalling CM6 and my apps. If that dosen't work I'll have to use the warranty I guess. Had the phone from about Sept 10 I believe.
Let me know if I missed anything guys. All ideas are welcomed to fix this issue.
It's probably because of CM. CM uses a audio boost kernel by default, so I'm guessing that's the problem. Try installing no audio boost kernel to see if it solves the issue.
yeah if you are using cyanogen ROM, they added an audio boost hack long ago. on cyan 5.0.8 the audio boost was so loud that over 50% volume started to distort the speaker and kill your ears. so in later releases they split the difference and lowered it somewhat.
but the boost has always been there. the only likely possibility is that you recently started enabling DSP settings like compression or the EQ, which would suddenly now make things way louder.
Wow thanks guys. Had no clue that CM had an audio boosted kernel. Guess I'll be flashing something else for the while. Something as close to vanilla I guess.
Oh, I also checked the DSP settings, everything was off but was worth a shot.
Thanks again for the replies!
Just to let anyone with the same issue know, I found away around it. I installed one of Wildmonks kernels without the audio fix.
Kernel 2.6.35.10 to be exact. I get to keep my cyan features and have a decent volume ear piece too. Yay!
Good work. It's funny cause most people complain this phone is too quiet. If only they see this post!
I am finding that no matter which version of Cyanogen's mod I use, either the official release, or one of the variants, they all have a similar issue:
When using my A2DP head set, all notifications and alarms will only play over the headset as long as it is connected. I have selected in the Cyanogenmod settings to force all notifications, ring tones, alarms over the speaker, but it does not seem to apply to A2DP.
Does anyone have similar issues, and has anyone found a solution if they have experienced this issue?
John
I can't be the only one having this issue. Its not there in stock and not there in MIUI.
I so much prefer Cyanogen roms though, minus this one issue. The ringtone also gets played over the bluetooth.
Its not an issue of turn off your bluetooth before you go to bed. Its also an issue of I can't hear my phone ring unless my bluetooth is on me.
Idiot, wrong section....
I see. Well thanks for the constructive post then.
And you're saying this behavior does not happen on stock roms, only cyanogen?

That is correct. Stock roms and MIUI roms do not exhibit this behavior for me.
that's a tough one. it will be hard to get the team to recognize and look to fix this discrepency. i had a similar "complaint" and i tried to go thru the code myself to see about fixing it. but your issue is way above my skill level so i dont knwo what you could do.
Hi folks,
I'm running Beanstalk 4.4.2, with
- PA's GApps 20131215-signed
- Firmware 3.05.651.5
- S-OFF,
and I'm experiencing sudden volume jumps up. It's reproducible. If I MAKE a call, then hang up, everything gets really loud: notifications, music/media, incoming ringtones, button presses. Even when I turn volume to one click above vibrate(silent), all sounds are really loud.
Rebooting fixes the problem, until the next time I make a call.
I've tried the new KitKat dialer apk with local search, but this doesn't fix the problem. I've tried freezing DSP Manager, but this doesn't do anything either.
Anyone else having similar problems, or know of a fix? Thanks!
Edit: also occurs with last CM build. Must be common for 4.4.2?

Feel better... You're not alone I too have the same issue on cm11 nightlies but only some of the most recent nightlies...I'm sure the cause is getting merged along the way. Its only a matter of time before its sorted.
Lol...I was falling asleep and got a text and it was on max vol...I double checked...turned it down to the lowest again and booom! Another text! Max again...thought it was just me being used to a quiet room or something or that my ring vol was not linked to notification vol but they were
Cheers
Thanks for making me feel like I wasn't crazy! It is pretty impressive how loud the phone is able to get. Hope there's a fix soon!
Few more notes to see if it helps anyone get to the bottom of this:
DSP manager works ok with fresh boot. Crank volume up, custom EQ works.
Make a call, volume spikes up, and then I have to turn volume down to one below vibrate. DSP custom EQ seems to still work: if I crank different frequencies up, you can hear a difference, but the thing is it doesn't sound the same as with fresh boot/DSP settings.
Eg: crank the 250hz range up, get nice bass from speakers with fresh boot. Make call, have to turn volume down, but the bass is gone and I can't get it to sound the same fiddling with the EQ.
I can't think of why this is the case. Anyway, don't mean to be annoying, just trying to see if anyone can piece this random info together.
Aloha,
When I first noticed this problem, I was using a Sense based ROM, now switched to CM11 and still have it:
Basically at the beginning of any call, people cannot hear me at all, then after 5 sec the problem mostly goes away, they still complain that they hear me as if I'm really quiet or talking out of a sewer but its manageable.
I dont think its a hardware problem, since it gets better after a few seconds, but I am unable to understand where this could be coming from. Is it the ROM, the kernel, radio or something else?
Any help would be much appreciated.
No ideas?
When I first got my phone music and youtube videos were really loud with the built in speakers. So much so that I had to turn the volume down a little bit for comfort. Now when I make sound it starts out very loud but quickly softens drastically. Like something is trying to auto normalize the sound to a much lower volume.
What bugs me is it used to work great. I'm on the same firmware version and such that I was on before.
Is anyone else having volume issues with their built in speakers?

I'm experiencing this too. I feel like it was designed this way. But I want to see some documentation.
Maybe you're just adjusting to the volume?? Kind of like when a fast car doesn't feel fast anymore.
Are you on a custom rom?
I'm on Stock ROM.
I know it isn't me just getting used to it. When I play some music it is really loud and vibrates my phone noticeably. After about 1 or 2 seconds though it quiets and my phone stops vibrating as much and I have a hard time discerning voices in the sound.
If I pause the video for a few seconds and start again the same thing happens. really loud then quieting.
If I turn down the video all the way then turn it up all the way fast the same things happens. I can feel the vibrations of the sound then they lessen and quiet down.
Interesting. I tried it this morning after a fresh charge and it works great now. I wonder if previously I was always testing at night when my battery was low. Perhaps this is some kind of built in battery savings scheme? When I was experiencing the issue I verified that Battery Savings mode was turned off. But perhaps this is something that auto happens when the battery is low?
I'll have to try again tonight.
I'm starting to have the same issue. Posting here for any updates, and I'll update as well if I figure out what's going on.
Me to guys....I thought I was going nuts today... Every roms got quiet audio and I'm just like wtf...so I flash stock images and STILL its quiet...I'm just wondering if its some kinda power save feature.
i've been looking through the mixer_paths.xml file to see if i can find headphones and speaker values to increase to increase volume and this mixer_paths file is different than what i'm used to with samsung and LG phones. i'm probably missing some values to see because i normally use 920 text editor but that app currently isnt working with android 5.0. has anyone found the values to change the increase volume?
I have the same issue. If i reboot the phone everything sounds great then shortly after the volume drops and its difficult to hear things. This happens evem during calls while using speaker phone. I've looked in all the settings and can not find anything to do with this. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank goodness I'm not the only one! I have this exact issue as well.
So this actually worked on my N6 maybe it will work for yours. After a reboot problem remains. I applied small pressure evenly to the speakers with my fingers and bam problem gone. I seriously hope we don't have bad hardware. Hope this helps you guys as well.
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/add203215b?commentId=837982 If you see Moto's Official forum lot of other people are having this same Issue
Add me to the list thought I was going crazy too
I'm pretty sure it's a software issue. On mine, the volume does the normalization thing, but if I switch orientations it goes back to full volume before dying down again. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
Same issue here. Thought I was loosing my mind. The volume goes down tremendously after starting music via the speakerphone after about 1 or 2 seconds. I have completely reset my phone and toggled the power saving setting and I'm still having this issue. Getting very annoyed.
Same issue here. My battery was down to 4% and the volume started getting lower some times.
Also it seemed like turning the device (display rotation?, gyro sensor?) had to do with it.
I also hear some noise (crackling) when the phone is at full volume and it's not playing music.

Same here with the normalize issue...tempted to send my nexus 6 back to motorola but it was so hard to get this phone
Cant believe google has yet to address this... I hope its a software fix coming.. I cant even really judge the audio bc i cant play anything at max volume smfh

I think it's a software issue. Whenever I notice the phone's volume is lower than it should be, I press volume up and down repeatedly then it goes back to normal. Gets annoying though.
Anyone found a solution for this or it just is what it is? Also notice the volume increases when I rotate the landscape view..then normalizes lower after a few seconds...
I've hard reset....flashed a fresh copy of 5.0.1 still no solution? Could this be a hardware issue?
