Ok, Cyanogen Rom Users, Here's a Poll! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope noone takes this the wrong way, I am indebted to Cyanogen for his mods. But lately, each update has brought me really cool new features, along with a few maddening bugs.
I may do the unthinkable, and revert to an earlier version, for a time. What do you, the experts, feel has been the best all around stable version to fall back on?

Cyanogen has stated the fact that several of his latest build have kinda wandered down the experimental dividing line.
4.2.9.1 was giving me to many problems. I ended up dropping back to 4.2.8.1 and have had good results with it in this config.... 4.2.8.1 - cfs bootimage - compcache on, home screen locked in mem. - app2sd - Then zipalign everything and using advanced task manager, I keep advanced launcher excluded and any time it starts to even blink wrong I hit the end all tasks button.
I also don't run hardly any widgets. Although I am trying out a calendar widget and figured I would turn on weather and news from nexus too.
All seems good.
Those same settings in 4.2.9.1 were really chunky and even after changing cfs to bfs, and dropping compcache it still was not to my likeing.
YMMV

I have voted for the one I am using (4.2.8)
Its been fine for me, and while so have his previous builds, thats the one I am currently using and I have no problems.

I voted for 4.2.5 because it just works for me. I don't have all the fancy stuff in place like a swap partion, comcache and whatever else. Just apps2sd and a rom.

Blame Google for being characteristically evil. If those retards didn't send him that C&D order, 4.2.9.1 would be as bug-free as 4.1.11.1 was.

Seesmic on Android - issues on CM 4.2.5 ?

I hadn't used the desktop app before so when I heard it was out for Android it piqued my interest. I downloaded it and although it has a few things missing (lists and hashtag searching I think is missing) they're not important to me. Anyway the purpose for me posting here is to check if anyone else using Cyanogen's Mod v4.2.5 has issues with notifications not happening. This, for me, is the second app that doesn't run as intended using CM ROMs and I don't like that one bit. Before I mention it to Cyanogen I want to see if I'm the only one having issues.
I'm having a few problems, too. Sometimes the program will crash when opening/closing the keyboard, sometimes it will freeze when switching tabs, etc.
I don't think it's CM's issue. I'm having a lot of FCs with it on Amon_RA's ROM as well, think it's just not stable enough.
I mentioned it to them via Twitter and they said they'd look into it. For an initial release the interface is really good I think but notifications are a must. To make sure it wasn't the ROM in general I've tried three separate ROMs now and ran another Twitter program at the same time, same interval updates and the other program (I Tweet) got all updates. Stupid thing is when I was reading them I got Seesmic telling me there were updates now. I'm sure they'll fix it but they better do it fast or the ratings will drop it.

Best ROM for G1. Don't Need the bs, Just Speed.

I currently have 5.0.8 on my G1. It runs terribly slow. All I want is a fast ROM. I want to be able to hit the home or back key and not have to wait 5 seconds for the phone to actually do it. I'm using automatic task killer too and I still have difficulty with performance.
Can anyone tell me what the best options are?

use swapper with swapiness 60 and some swap space (file), works great!
Just from my experience, stick with Android 1.6, don't go any higher than that
My opinion is that the G1's hardware was simply not meant nor is capable of running anything above Android 1.6 "well" and at a constant reliable speed.
I have used every ROM starting from JF 1.41 (Android 1.0) to the latest FroYo Roms (Android 2.2). I say the best, fastest and most stable ROM is SuperD (Android 1.6). I don't use the latest version of it... because the theme I love, DarkStar doesn't support it, but even my dated version of SuperD runs extremely well, I am certain the latest version of SuperD runs even better.
I have over 6000 text messages on my phone, I use all 5 screens on my home screen with a total of 10 widgets spread across them, including a Weather Clock which takes quite a bit of memory. Even so, the phone still loads everything very fast. (I do use CompCache and a 32 MB Swap)
I have stuck with SuperD for several months now and I am pretty convinced that this ROM is what I will use until the day I need to get a new phone, which is in half a year or so.

Fastest Roms on the G1 are probably Htcclays superbad 1.3.3 and SuperD
But if your looking for 2.1 roms I highly suggest Chromatic 3.8 by
far the fastest eclair rom for the g1.
enomther !!! 1.6 the original! speeedy and reliable!
anyone have a down load for any of enomther 1.6 or 2.1 roms? links seem to be dead and I've just returned to 2.22.23.02 trying to get t-mobile aosp while remaining rooted.
Anyone have the dl link for Htcclays superbad 1.3.3? And I don't understand the difference between superd white and black. Which ones better and faster?
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=htcclay/
It's somewhere in there
If you ever are looking for more ROMs look in:
http://files.androidspin.com/
db.androidspin.com has mostly dead links

Are there any really basic roms out there?

So here's the skinny. I'm new to the whole rooting-esque activities on a phone. The hero is my first smart phone, and i'm looking to expand what it can do.
BUT.
All of the roms I seem to find are 50/50 good/bad to me. They have some nice things like the OC/UV/Jit working, but then they do all sorts of stuff like live wallpapers, all sorts of color changes, lock screen changes, etc etc.
What I'd like, is a minimalist ROM, that as close as possibly matches the following:
SenseUI Dialer app
Auto OC to 710 (and underclock when not in use)
UV
Jit
Good Screen response (with no real keyboard, the onscreen MUST work well)
Things I don't want
Features that don't work (Camera, BT, MMS etc not working)
Instability (I'd trade less crazy for more stable)
See-ums like Live Wallpapers, and other things that do not add function other than visual "niceness"
So my question, is there anything like this?
honeybun
and not the sweet bread variety.

i would say pick up the latest fresh rom, its made for just the basic stuff and you can add more if you want. jit can be very unstable at times so i dont know why you would want that

perfect one for you, and it happens to be the best.
I use what I think you are looking for exactly, with maybe the exception of the HTC dialer. The absolute best custom 2.1 Rom out there, that does not have much of the eye candy that just drains your battery and personally I find it to be clutter and annoying, it is caller DarchDroid 2.7.
It does not have HTC Sense whatsoever in it. It was built using a different source than what HTC puts on it, and I like it much better. It is very fast, responsive, touch screen works real nice, it has JIT, UV, OC to 710 by default, does not have live wallpaper. It is clean, good to the eye without the glitter, camera and all that works, basically everything works on the phone.
it uses all the standard aosp apps by default like aosp keyboard (which personally i find it very accurate and easy to use).
If the default apps do not please you, you can always dl and install apps from the market.
to check out and dl darchdroid, goto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703133
if you want to use all the google apps, then be sure to dl and install the google ****s on that page as well.

this is great if you don't want sense, to me its a personal preference thing so you can try each. I used dd2.7 for a loooong time and it is the most stable rom Ive had with up to 30 hour battery life
I'm still using Ic3Rom v2.8. It is by far the best ROM I've flashed in terms of performance. It looks mostly AOSP, but still has the Sense dialer and people apps, with other Sense goodies in there as well. Other recent ROMs I've tried out are DarchDroid and the Cyanogen 6 test, and while I've really liked a lot about both of them, Ic3 is more stable and MUCH quicker than either.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=663366&highlight=ic3
DD all the way...best rom ive used to date.. and i have tried them all!!! ic3rom close second!!!
i have to say darch droid, OR buufed Rom are indeed THE best ive used. Both are fast, Stable, AND both use less then 100mb onboard flash! good luck to u though.
I can't believe no one mentioned nfinitefx45's ROM which is 100% stock, with A2SD and everything working. Don't mind the screenshots at the bottom, that's what it looks like only if you flash the optional file for the zen aka MyTouch 3G theme.
As for the OC (and optional undervolt), get DarchKernel for nfinitefx rom here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705074
Users have reported this combo to be very, very fast. The only thing it doesn't have is JIT.
Like others mentioned, Iced HoneyBun ROM is also good, and DarchKernel is also available for it
IceRom 2.8
NOIDBETA still working on oc

Definitely either one is a solid choice, but I prefer Buufed because its completely themed out. Its 100% AOSP (meaning its ridiculously fast), includes all the stuff you like (UV, OC, JIT) and is still very stable, and it looks pretty sweet.

I agree. Can't believe someone didn't mention nfinitefx's ROM. I am runing it right now and even without OC it runs very smoothly.

Multitasking ROM

Can somebody recommend me some nice ROM with decent multitasking? I don't care much about speed but I do care about keeping apps running in the background. I can't remember which ROM was my first one when I bought G1 back in January, but I remember multitasking was pretty good. Then I switched to Cyanogen 5 and tried different versions as they were released but all of them had appalling multitasking. I have now installed Complete Eclair and it's not really any better.
Just to clarify what I want to achieve - I want to be able to say open a website, go back to the home screen, open market and be able to switch back to the website exactly as it was when I left it. And then switch back to market and see it exactly as I left it. At the moment it's just not happening, every time I switch to any background application it sort of reloads itself. If your ROM can do this please let me know. Another thing - navigation. As far as I remember I used to be able to press power button to conserve battery and still have voice guidance. Now navigation gets killed as soon as I press power button. Again, if your ROM can do this properly please let me know.
I do need Exchange support so it will have to be at least 2.0 rom I suppose. The only Donut ROMs with Exchange support I have found are Sense ones and these are out of the question because of no BT support.
thanks
Probably not gonna find what you're looking for. Eclair and Froyo ROMs are so RAM intensive that not much room is left for decent multitasking. I'd say to try and use a giant SWAP partition and a modest compcache with whatever your favorite Eclair ROM is. This is gonna be dog slow most of the rest of the time though.
Isnt there an ap for 1.6 that lets you exchange sync im not sure but if there is remix cdvsi < somthin like that 40 mem when not using anythin wich i think is good ?
Turned out the latest Donut Cyanogen has Work Email which is good enough for me. I miss a few Eclair specific things but nothing too serious, so I guess problem solved.

Since these two are so closely related, I'll be posting them together.
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS ONE IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE LEAK, ONE IS NOT
Change log from 1.8.6:
Updated tweaks (credit to Collin_PH for some of them)
Kernel tweaks (NO this is not a custom kernel upgrade of any sort, simply set the CFS to behave more like a BFS) i'd like to thank inkarnit for working on these behind the scenes with me. He helped me test the kernel tweaks
These kernel tweaks will kill your quadrant score. If you score ~900/1000, you know they are working. These quadrant scores are changed in the I/O scheduler, but increase cpu performance and the like. The phone OVERALL will run FASTER and SMOOTHER than before. THESE LOW SCORES ARE NORMAL. Linpack scores, on the contrary, will increase.
Added transition animations (credit to Myn, and JsinLegacy for pointing them out)
Re-optimized, zipaligned all apks and framework-res/moto-res
OGG (sounds) optimized
Updated moto files with 2.3.320 files (some anyways)
Now compatible with OC on boot (seems to not work on the leak) and will not cancel out my tweaks
Bootstrap is installed on boot (takes a few minutes), to reboot into recovery, either run the bootstrap app or type bstrap.sh -r in terminal emulator *STILL BETA*
Some other things I can't remember right now, will update when my memory is better

FAQ
Q: My Gmail doesn’t sink! Your rom brokeded my phone!
A: Download it from the market, set it to sync in accounts, gmail settings. You should get a notification asking permission. Allow it, then re-check the sync email option.
Q: I can’t voice search! Dubya tee eff?
A: Download Voice Search from the market. It was removed since Google likes to update things constantly and I can’t keep up with them. I’m not a themer, I have no need to 
Q: My HDMI doesn’t work!?
A: I know. I’m working on a fix, and am getting close.
Q: Why is my phone so awesome now?
A: <Insert cheesy answer here>
Q: Why does my phone randomly reboot some times?
A: Moto's screwy behavior with the bootloader and the security checks constantly checking for blur. This causes all of the phones memory to be eaten up (mostly at times when the screen is locked) and reboot to free it again. This is also an issue with their framework, and not just the blur security checks. It's being worked on, I promise. Every release, you all test a possible fix
(This question drives me crazy but I have a full answer now)
Q: Why is my cell standby ~50%?! That's why my phone dies in 0.02 seconds!!!!1!1
A: No.. Your phone dies because A: you are overclocked and your phone doesn't like it, B: Your phone doesn't like my tweaks or C: Your phone doesn't like me, period. Cell standby is a graphical bug caused by improper permissions. Currently, I can fix it, but if I do, you cannot wipe system before installing without a hard brick. My rom AUTOMATICALLY wipes system, and I will not get rid of that feature because it saves A LOT of issues on my end, and on yours.

Note: All themes from 1.6 work with this rom, but i'm going to link them here when I get done writing this paper!!!

Thanks for addressing HDMI Drod. DEFINITELY looking forward to that appearing in rubix or fission!!
+1 on the 3G Mobile HotSpot app -- the mynet APK is in /system/app, but it doesn't show up in the app drawer. I upgraded from Rubix 1.6, so I didn't do a full wipe. Could that be causing it?
Also, is there any chance that you could remove Swype from the ROM, and just make it an optional download? I'm a beta user for Swype, and it works wy better than the built-in version. But every time I flash a new ROM, it kills my version in favor of the ROM's one, and I have to wipe both versions out and reinstall it from scratch.

Pretty sure drod won't be removing swype...
Easiest way to solve for you might be to dl the .zip to your computer first, and use 7zip (or winrar, or whatever archiver you use), open the .zip, and yank out the /system/swype.apk file. That way, you don't get swype, and it shouldn't affect your beta version.
HTH!
No, it works just fine. I do have to wipe all existing Swype files from my phone, though, before I install the new beta. I just do a global sarch for "swype" in Root Explorer, then delete every single found instance. After that, Swype installer installs without any issues, and downloads and installs the latest version.
I know this is contrary to the point of the rom, but does anyone know if there's a way to add the facebook "account" setting back into the rom? It integrates so much more smoothly than the facebook application. Thanks in advance.

How so? I find the Facebook app's contact integration to be far better. You get a link to their profile page in the FB app via quick contact tasks. The only thing you lose is the social messaging integration, but I hardly ever want to go into someone's contact just to see that stuff. And as the FB app gets more features it's starting to make Moto's FB less useful in comparison.
Booyah! D/l'ing now!
