I need the original zip - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone here have the original 1.5 Android update zip? I need it. I need to restore back to default factory setting. I am currently on console recovery, and I have a SD card reader as well.
Does my SD card needs to be fat, fat32, or exfat? Thanks.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but....
I think you need the DREAIMG.nbh file if you want to restore back to factory defaults.
Once you get that (just google the file name)
Boot into the bootloader (camera+power) and allow it to do it's thing
I really don't think you can use the update.zip from a replacement recovery screen

huh?
I am on Android System Recovery Utility. I erased the system settings/factory reset.
I was trying to install eclair 2.0-1.2 but I don't know HOW I can format my SDcard to eta3, google doesn't answer the question effectively (SORRY!!!!!!!!).
I need this answers:
1) Where do I download rc29 update? Where and how? The developers website won't let me download 1.5 image because the link is grey out. Pisses me off.
2) How do I format my SDcard to linux eta3 in Windows 7? Please tell me!

#1. thats the ADP image and not what you want.
#2. You cant format to ext3 in windows 7 with default programs.

Guys please..
All I am asking is:
1) I need 1.5 update... please.. I am begging you guys. I am very frustrated with my G1. Again, I am on my Android System Recovery Utility. I want to be able to put my 1.5 on my SDcard reader, put it in my G1, and update it from there. SIMPLE. That's it, I made a big mistake of formatting my G1 in the first place.
Please, I am begging you guys, please HELP ME OUT! Thank you!

If you have "rooted" your phone and you want to get everything back to it's default state, then you would want to download DREAIMG.nbh format your sdcard to fat32 and boot into the bootloader as explained above
You can find the RC29 DREAIMG.nbh file
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EMY1HIVU
You only need to have an ext3 partition if you're rooting your phone and using a rom that has apps2sd, if that's the case you can read how to create the partitions by following this link
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/

Can you provide a link for instructions on updating to RCA29 via bootloader? I am on the screen and the only thing I see right now it says serial0. Thanks. I already put DREAMAIMG.nbh file in my SDcard via reader. Now what?

The bootloader should recognize the file
A Couple things to keep in mind
Are you in the US on T-Mobile, RC29 is for the US version of Dream
Did you extract the zip and make sure it is named DREAIMG.nbh just like so
Try formatting the card again as fat32, maybe try a full format as opposed to a quick format

Guys, I am stuck on red, green, blue, and white screen. Nothing is happening, how do I turn if off?
I downloaded the file form the link you provided. I didn't change the filename, just drag and drop to my sdcard. My tombile is from US. Yes.

I forgot to extract it, I thought I had to put the zip file in first. Sorry.

Either take the batter out or Call + Menu + End key should reboot the phone.
Make sure you rename the file appropriately, and then reflash the DREAM image.

The link I provided you pointed to a .zip file
Extract the file and make sure you place DREAIMG.nbh onto the sdcard
To reboot the phone from the colored screen you can press call+menu+power or pull the battery
When the file is on a properly formatted card, and readable as DREAIMG.nbh you will prompted by another screen that will allow you to restore your phone

I got it, thanks!
Now.. I would LOVE to install eclair 2.0-1.2 but alias I need to have eta3 table installed on my SDcard.
Any ideas how to accomplish that?

To install manups eclair rom (I believe that's the one you're referring to)
You need to root your phone
You can follow this guide
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-root-a-t-mobile-g1-and-mytouch-3g-android-phone/
Since you've already applied the downgrade skip down to the section titled
B2. Replace the recovery image
If you follow the guide exactly you'll have Cyanogen's Recovery image, if you use that recovery you can follow the guide below to create an ext partition on your sdcard
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/
If you deviate slightly from the guide you use Amon_RA's recovey image (just look for it under the development section for Dream's here on XDA), you can use Amon_RA's recovery to create the ext partition for you automatically
Once you have your recovery image installed and your ext partition setup then you can apply the rom you downloaded for manups eclair
Edit: I just looked at the thread for that ROM, it states you need to have Haykuro's SPL AKA The Danger SPL installed, this SPL has is known to brick phones if not installed properly
Having that information if you still feel you want to proceed, after installing your custom recovery you can follow the links in my signature for radio/spl to get the files
1) install radio first allow phone to reboot it will take a minute or three, be patient don't pull battery
2) Install SPL allow phone to reboot, once again it will take a minute while it writes the files
then you can apply your rom
*Once again many people have bricked their phones installing this file, make sure you are comfortable installing it before trying and aware of the risks, if you're phone bricks, it's not mine or anyone elses fault that you attempted this mod, you assume all responsibilty (just wanted to throw that in there, because there are literally hundred's of bricked phones from failed spl updates)

When unrooting, bootloader is saying "no image found"...

I am following these instructions to bring my phone back to stock, before I send it in for a replacement (Alt key isn't working):
1. get the original SPL for your phone, go to the SPL thread at the top
2. rename it to update.zip and flash it to your phone
3. download the DREAIMG.nbh from the thread where you rooted your phone
4. place DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card and start phone in bootloader(camera+power)
5. hit power to start the update DO NOT INTERRUPT!! i can not stress this enough
6. hit action(trackball down) and your phone will reboot
7. YOU NOW HAVE STOCK FIRMWARE, it will update on it's own in a little bit
I downloaded G1OrigBootloader_nocheck.zip, copied it to my SD card, renamed it to "update.zip", turned the phone off, powered up holding HOME and POWER and then pressed ALT+W for wipe and then ALT+S to apply the update. So far, so good.
Then I deleted update.zip from the SD card and moved DREAIMG.nbh onto it. I powered off the phone, then pressed the camera button and power. It has the white screen with the blue text "Loading..." and then the screen briefly flashes with "No image file!" before going to the bootloader screen.
Help! I don't know what to do next. Many thanks!
ETA: Should I install the DREAIMG.nbh *before* installing the stock SPL?
ETA 2: I formatted my SD Card just for grins (I could swear I had done that before) and now it's working fine. So. For anyone else who gets the No Image File error, try formatting your SD Card and then transferring files. Also, I re-downloaded the DREAIMG.nbh file so it might've even been that which fixed it. At any rate, I no longer need assistance and I don't know how to delete a post. I'm assuming you can't.
In case anyone else comes across this thread while having this problem...
I had the same problem with my Rhodium. The problem disappeared when I switched from formatting that particular SD card with FAT to FAT32.
So, try FAT32 and see if that helps!

Yup^ android cant read fat partitions.
Also why do you want to unroot?
I was helping a friend unroot for a warranty return and I encountered this problem. While I realized that it was a simple, and some what dumb typograpghical error in my case. Have you checked, and I mean really checked the filename? I realized that I had a space in between the "G" and the "." (DREAIMG .nbh, rather than DREAIMG.nbh) I have the RC29 and RC30 .nbh images backed up on my home computer for just such purposes and I have them labeled accordingly (example: DREAIMG RC29.nbh). So when I went use it, I copied the file, edited the name, and forgot to take the space out. It therefore displayed no image for me as well. Just something simple to check.

CM 4.2.4 upgrade issue

Hi team,
Having some trouble rooting my g1 and upgrading to CM 4.2.4
I have been following a tutorial from here: http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-root-a-t-mobile-g1-and-mytouch-3g-android-phone/
... to achieve my goal. Followed all of the steps fine and to a tee. Installed all of the suggested files from the suggested places.
Succesfully upgraded the radio image, then moved onto upgrading the SPL. Ran through and rebooted phone, until the never ending "Formatting Cache" notice came up on the automatic boot into the Recovery Mode.
(FYI: radio and SPL images were from http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/)
Moved on to installing CM 4.2.4 after realising that the format was complete... Alt-W then Install from zip. Installed CM. Waited for prompt for completion... pressed reboot... then the boot hangs on the G1 startup screen.
Only way I could get out was to remove the battery. Went through the process again (Alt-W, SPL install, reboot, Alt-W, CM install, reboot, hang) numerous times, all with the same outcome.
Only thing that I can think of that I am doing wrong is pulled straight from CyanogenMod Wiki explanation: "I've noticed on some devices that when you fresh install the first time and you update with the rooted adp package from htc, reboot and then update to latest CM, some people get stuck at the tmobile logo. What I did was install the rooted adp package from htc, reboot and sign in all the way to home screen, then rebooted and installed the latest CM. That should get you past the first screen freeze if it happens to you."
As I am a noob, I have been unable to try this for the following reasons: 1. Where can I find the HTC rooted adp? and 2. How do I get this image onto the SD card when I can't boot in? I have tried without booting and my computer won't let me access via USB...
I was going through the process from factory settings. Is this my problem... Very confusing.
Realise that there are currently two active threads running in this section that are similar... but these guys seem to have done the wrong thing and are trying to right the ship... I can't seem to figure where I've gone wrong.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
As well: could booting with camera + power get me into the Dreaming.nbh OS to get HTC root OS onto the SD card?
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html
Download the 1.6 recovery image. It is actually the 1.6 Android Dev Phone ROM, flash that via recovery console... then flash the cm update. Make sure you wipe before you start flashing.
As well, do you have your SD card partitioned? It would be a good idea to do that as well. Two ways to do it, manually, or download and update to RA's recovery image 1.2.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
I would update to that recovery first, use the option to part my SD card, upgrade to ext3, wipe, flash 1.6 recovery, flash cm update, good to go!
Thanks for the quick reply! Very handy info... How do I get the images onto my SD card without being able to boot though?
Do you have another device like a camera, or mp3 player that can take a microsd? If so just hook it up and transfer.. otherwise you may need some additional devices.. I bought an adapter so my sd can plug directly into a usb.. other than those couple options, I haven't any more suggestions to offer ya. If you cant get past the boot screen to mount, I don't see how you can do it through your G1.. there might be some terminal commands you can try to mount to a computer.. but that's beyond me.

You take it out of the phone, while the battery is pulled, put it in an micro SD card reader, plug that into your computer, tada! If you computer doesn't have a slot for the standard SD card adapter, you can get microSD to USB adaptors most everywhere that sells electronics.
Or if you have cyan's recovery installed... you can hold Home+power
go to console, press enter and type
ums_enable

and it will mount the sd on your pc.....
put ums_disable to unmount
Sorry to be a noob, but what benefit does partitioning do?
If you have an EXT3 partition, you will have app2sd. If you also have a linux-swap partition, you will be able to have a swap file (in simple terms its like adding more ram)
The ext partition is for apps2sd, and the Linux-swap partition is to give a little extra memory for the ROM.
Thanks for all of your help lads! Up and running. Muchly appreciated!

Urgent help needed :(

I have had my g1 for about a year now and I rooted it a few months ago. I've been trying to update the rom but everytime I try to format the sd card on my pc it says no disk found in drive F. I have tried it on other computers. I tried it via usb and a card reader. When I put update.zip into the root folder it says it cant find it. Please someone help! I need my phone to be amazing again!
Is the card formatted in Fat32?
Yeah its formatted to Fat32
you have to assign the a sd card a drive letter.
assign the sd card a drive letter.
How do I do this?
Well I just assigned it a letter and the same thing happens. I really am stuck.
What are you trying to update from? What update are you trying to apply? What recovery are you using? Do you have a file manager on your phone like androzip? If you can answer some questions, you may have a few workarounds....

You could try doin it with your phone (since you said you're rooted) using recovery
If you're using Cyanogen's recovery there's a good guide on androidandme.com
http://bit.ly/61CXFo
If you're using Amon_Ra's recovery I think it's automated, I've never used it before but from what I understand the you have the option to do it from the recovery menu
I'm currently running cyanogen mod 4.1.11.1 I'm not sure of the recovery image and I am trying to update to the next version of cyanogen. I think it might be a problem with my phone :S I really dont know. I have looked online and nothing seems to work I can put any update onto the sd card but when I try to update on my phone it says the file doesnt exist
it should say what recovery you are using in the recovery screen.
connect to wifi spot, download the new amon ra recovery, and move it from the download folder to the root of the sdcard using androzip (from the market).
follow the steps to flash the new recovery in the amon thread.
the next steps from there are up to you.....you can try to repartion your card using the menu option in recovery and then try to mount your g1 to your computer in the recovery menu. the recovery will allow you to choose what size partitions you want (fat32, ext, and swap) and do all of it for you. very handy.
once you get it to mount to your computer, you're in business.
if you think your card is ok as is, you could always download the htc file and cm4.2.6 directly to your g1, move them from download folder to sd root, wipe everything and flash.
either way, if you run into problems with your card, you maybe without phone until you get a good card.
good luck
Hey thanks for the great replies. Still no luck though I downloaded the amon ra recovery image and did what it said but when on the terminal emulator I type mount -a and it says 'mounting /dev/block/mmcb1k0p2 om /system/sd failed: no such file or directory'
Bump! PLEASE HELP ME

Oh I borked this up good! little help?

So I was going to try and change roms. And I couldn't boot into recovery, so I made a recovery bootable sd card. Me in my glorious thinking decided I would just use it to install the internal recovery and my rom.
Once the sdcard booted into recovery I did a system/data/cache wipe. then installed clockworkmod. It succeeded, so I went to the rom I had on my card. It failed. I said I know, I'll power down, take the sdcard put cm on it and try again. wrong.
Now I can't boot into recovery on either an sdcard or without and turning on the nook regularly flashes loading and goes to the page that says android with the flashing underscore.
so as far as I can tell I have no operating system, because I wiped system. and I'm not sure what is up with my recovery.
I'm looking at this page,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
but I'm not sure how I would flash the zip if I can't boot into anything?
any ideas would be appreciated

if any linux users have any advice on writing this image I'd appreciate... goodnight all I will try again tomorrow at some point
thanks for the help though!

well at least you boot Partition is intact, but sounds like you have no system or data partition.
Its very odd that the Nook wont boot off the SD card, it should look for that first in the boot Process, all i can think of is that your SD card is still not right.
I tried two different cards. The clockwork 4gb version and the 8gb version. Both looked right with the appropriate files. :/
So I don't think, though it's still a possibility, that it's the card itself
I think in the morning I'll try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870]

Silly question as I haven't been able to find the info as of yet. Could you explain how we can go about burning the newest CWR ( ie 3.0.1.0 ) so we have a bootable sdcard running it ( 3.0.1.0) instead of the older 3.0.0.6 that all the burnable imgs are currently. I looked threw the thread and I don't see any instructions or talk about how to update a bootable sdcard. It only seems to discuss updating the recovery of the eMMC using ADB or the *.zip file that is linked. Any input, advice, or link would be greatly appreciated. Peace

so I found my old G1 and decided to install a newer version of android. Did a search and learned I needed to root it first, so I did it following THIS GUIDE:

I Did every step well. Now in order to install a custom rom, at the end of the page it says:
Download the image.
Rename it to update.zip.
Copy it to your phone's SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Start up in recovery mode by holding Home and pressing Power.
Press alt-W to wipe your device. (You need to do this, or the device may hang at the flashing Android screen)
Press alt-S to apply the update.
There are links for custom roms in the same page but none of them work.. So i searched myself for a new rom and found "Froyo by Lazzo", put it in the SD card and renamed it to update.zip, installed the zip succesfully but when it reboots it just hangs in the black G1 screen...

its ok, i know how it feels, be very careful because the process of upgrading your radio and spl is potentially dangerous and can cause a brick, so make sure to follow every direction as instructed.

fastboot method is much safer, but if recovery method is the only way you can do this, go for it, but be extremely careful.
Thanks, finally installed hboot and the radio I needed, still with partitioning troubles.... lets forget the rom I wanted in the first post, I found this one:

I have the correct radio, followed instructions and it hangs in the black G1 screen... must be because I am having troubles understanding how to partition the damn sd card!
I am stuck in this step "partition your sd card: swap(64M+),EXT4(AT LEAST 256M),FAT32" so...how do I do that?
I have the RA v1.7 recover, so when I go to "partition sd card" I get the following options:
Partition SD
Repair SD:ext
SD:ext2 to ext3
SD:ext3 to ext4
Which one should I choose to complete this step: swap(64M+),EXT4(AT LEAST 256M),FAT32
When I choose the 1 option it allows me to set the swap size as well as the Ext2 one,
but if I select any of the two other options it just partition the SD without allowing me to chnge the sizes...
Its actually pretty simple.
Ok, so heres what your going to do.
We are going to partition through recovery:
boot into recovery
go to the partition sd card option
click partition sd card
use these sizes:ext 2: 512 mb, linux swap :64, and the rest is for the fat 32 partition
then once that is done, click ; SD:ext2 to ext3 :: Convert ext2 to ext3
then once that is done, click : SD:ext3 to ext4 :: Convert ext3 to ext4
and u now have ext 4!
and there ur done.

Did everything, still nothing.... what do you mean with " and the rest is for the fat 32 partition"? before partitioning in what kind of format the SD card should be? I had it in FAT32

It doesn't matter what format it is, when you click format sd card, your formatting it to ext 2. What I mean by the rest for fat32 is because your sd card will have 3 partitions, sd ext, swap, and whatever is left of the sd card after choosing the sizes for sd ext and swap, will go towards fat 32.
So just follow my steps again and see if it works, if not are you sure its your sd card? Did you flash the appropriate kernel for the rom to boot? Your supposed to flash a kernel after flashing the rom. Your probably doing everything else right except that. Flash the kernel recommended in the rom thread.
