App for New York - Off-topic

Hey,
next week I visit NYC and I'm searching for an app which doesn't need internet access but can help me in the big city
Normally you can use Google maps, but I'm from Europe so it will be very expensive to download the maps etc. It is possible to get a GPS navigation with hints like restaurant, clubs etc? A metro plan and other stuff?
regards,
ne0n

What phone do you have?

Sorry, I forgot it. I have a HTC Touch Pro 2.

I would suggest TomTom for wimo. Its nice and easy to use, however it is not free. If your looking at saving the wallet, try EarthComber. (google earthcomber windows mobile)
It's free, works well and is pretty straight forward. However its not a digital travel guide, its GPS software with POI's.
If you need a metro guide just download a separate app, I do not know of any offhand and anything I would suggest would just be from google results, and searching yourself is half the fun!
Other than that, you are not going to run out of things to do. A computer or friend is going to be your best bet if you want to find things that interest you, but if you need reviews or suggestions check out Yelp!
The only thing your phone is going to be able to do is find out how to get there from your hotel.
Best of luck and safe travels!

On my Italian Kaiser I'm usin Igo2008 right now cause my TomTom lots of time doesn't syncronize street at real time (and few time I was wrong way LOL)...
In my sig ...
AdriaRoute is by far the best solution for Slovenia. It is quite precise when we come to streets and house numbers, customised POIs are nice add-on too. There are some drawbacks, but nothing serious.
Was using TomTom too, but its coverage is poor for our area, although there are some small areas with better coverage and details than AdriaRoute
I also like the response time finding an alternative way, way better than Garmin XT. New version solved this problem a bit, but still.
Both programs can read and speak Slovenian.
Depends on the country
I think this depends very much on where your using the device, i belive in the states theres some software called route 66 which is pretty good.. although ive never tried it.
In the uk i would recomend tomtom, this does have maps for most of europe as well, but like someone else stated the maps can be poor in some areas.
and if you don't want to srearch much and you want something free google maps mobile is you answer!!!
For voice routing/etc I use TomTom Navigator 6. It's great for where I am. I'm located in the US and I've used it in several states. Prompts, re-routing, directions, etc are all pretty accurate. I've used a few others but could never get used to it.
I also use Google Maps for quick location search, which works well on the device.
I use google maps, cause it seems like its the only one that
1. Is Free
2. Has maps for new zealand
Which one's are free?
I use both TomTom and Google.
For long trips I use TomTom, but local I use Google. I do like google better just because its easy to use and find food, and gas and stores around where ever I am, and also will import the info into my contacts as well if I need.
Am I right in assuming that Google Maps only does turn-by-turn which you must manually progress through your route?
I tried it out and this is what it seems to do...which is a nice program, but not exactly GPS software.
Am I missing how to use a feature of it or am I right in assuming it is basically like using the google maps webpage to get directions?
Oh I think I did know you can use the GPS to locate yourself to plan the initial route...but it doesn't track as you go, does it?
i'am in chile, and i use gps proxy with garminque and works perfect...
Yes Google and Microsoft Live both will route and track you on a moving map, but they don't have "heading up" and don't talk. But they are good free apps to keep on the phone for locating POI's etc.
In the US I prefer iGuidance v4 hands down because of talking street names, something few PDA versions have at the moment.
iGuidance ****
I have had good luck with iGuidance! link in my sig....

Has anyone gotten Pandora to work?

http://www.pandora.com
It's by far the best customizable web radio that I've found. I've gotten 7 or 8 good stations all trained up (it works like Tivo's suggestions, which you can vote thumbs-up or thumbs-down to, and learns as you go), and on QuickMix it's like my ultimate radio station.
So I'd love to be able to take it with me on my new Tilt.
It's basically just a Flash player in a browser, but from all my Googling it appears to be pretty difficult to get working.
Anyone have any luck with it?
Thanks,
Raketemensch
Have you tried Skyfire??? Seems like it will be the only browser that allows this interface as of now
I have been waiting on someone to help port it to the Kaiser..really love pandora.com
I used to have a motivation to play about with this as i was a big Pandora fan... but then they blocked access outside the US and bothering to find a decent US based proxy to bounce it through just seemed like too much hassle...
Would be good to hear if a PDA version worked now (i never managed to get it going in the past) - it might inspire me to start bouncing traffic about a bit more!
I love Pandora. I listen frequently on my PC. They currently have 16 AT&T phones with the ability to listen. I don't know what it takes to get this to work but I want it too!
I was on a quest to get this working once but never found a solution. If someone knows how, please come forward!
I guess Pandora requries Flash 8, and we've only got Flash 7 available.
So now that they have an iphone pandora app, will that facilitate the migration of that tool to WM? Let's not mention the giant crap that pandora just took on all WM users by putting out an iphone app after years of neglecting the mobile world.
This outta do the trick

but that's for last.fm
nothing for pandora.com???
man.... i dun get why they write code for 16 diff phones from diff manufactures and not write 1 for the windows mo os....
As you said Pandora, and Last.fm are completely different, and while last.fm has one advantage over pandora in that they have comedy on there, pandora still has them beat hands down...... I just don't get how pandora is going to put out an app for ONE phone... I was thinking before the iphone app that the networks were legally keeping them from releasing a mobile app to keep the traffic off the network but now that's been blown out of the water.

Any update on this?
I see there's little new information regarding www.pandora.com on the Tilt. Is there a widget somewhere or perhaps a registry change to allow this to work?

Questions from Potential Tilt Owner (n00b)

I'm planning on purchasing a new phone, likely the AT&T tilt.
My family is currently an AT&T customer. They will be adding a new line for me.
Is the best place to purchase a phone through AT&T's site?
Do you recommend refurbs?
Also, I hear that if I do not have a data plan, I could rack up extreme charges.
I want to use Wi-Fi and not 3G Internet to save money. I also want to disable 3G to save battery life.
Upon searching, I see that "Dutty's Diamond V1 Build 19588" may be able to do what I want. I'm also searching for similar builds. If I get a Tilt, is Dutty's the preferred ROM build, and does it offer what I'm looking for (protection from data charges)?
I also want a nice Touch 3D interface (with the option of enabling or disabling it to save memory/CPU).
As far as my experience goes: I've modified various devices from my gaming systems to my iPod Video. I'm just new to cell phones. I'm here learn and hopefully one day contribute.
PS. Current owners: I've read stories. How is the video quality, really? Will this phone be able to replace my iPod Video 5G 30GB for video playback? Also, will I be required to pay $10/mo for AT&T Navigator, or will GPS work fine without the package?
Sorry for the lengthy post. I'll continue my reading and researching. (been clicking links from the sticky)
I personally delete the network settings to prevent any data charges, or you can look into download Modaco Nodata. Touchflo comes with the Tilt and if you want the cube, there are many versions on here so you'll have to find which you like best. I don't mind the video quality. It's not the best but certainly not the worst; works fine most of the time. It might not replace the iPod in video playback to many people's standards, but it would for me. No you wont be requried to pay for the Navigator, you can get Tomtom or iGO that have pre-downloaded maps.
Ok, so eliminate the "Extreme" data charges you will need to install this:
Modaco NoData - this enable you to toggle the ability to use or not use data connections. (very very useful for roaming and etc.).
Then,
I think only one rom has NoData already cooked in but you can always just download it from the above link and put it into any rom you wish.
For any GPS you will need to pay.
3D Touch interface with the ablility to enable/Disable it - nothing spectacular? Sorry.
All the roms include a Communication Manager in which you can turn off 3G data connections (along with wifi, Internet Sharing, Active Sync, Bluetooth etc.)
Dutty's roms are no longer supported - he has moved his development to the Diamond.
This will not replace your iPod Vid. unless you can find a 30Gb Micro SDHS card - even then, i think the iPod battery is tailored more towards video so it may last longer than the tilt if you plan to watch videos on it.

You have several answers already - here is my take on it -
1. I purchased my Tilt through AT&T and have not regretted it - you might get it cheaper somewhere else - but if they are selling it there is a reason - right?
2. you can turn off the data capability (as several have already said.)
3. there are many things that you can do with Kaiser Tweak to turn off 3G and other things to preserve battery life - but you will not get (realistically more than one day's worth of battery no matter WHAT you do (since most people have to go in DAY increments and I have NEVER gotten TWO out of it.
4. Dutty's ROMs are no longer supported - look at my signature for one that I think is pretty great - but lots of others will work for you as well.
5. GPS - this is FREE totally - no cost - if you want TeleNAV it will cost per month and that is useless because I need it when my cell does not work and it requires cell to work - the GPS works free with live search and I have TOMTOM which is free monthly but you have to purchase maps.
6. I watch videos on it all the time - works fine - not 1080p but adequate.
Just my opinion.
Bill
You can also use "Kaiser Tweaks" to prevent your Tilt from connecting to the internet. You can always deactivate 3G. To use telenav you need to have a data connection. So the best option would be something like Garmin or Tom Tom or something similar.
Thanks. From what I understand, I have to go ROM hunting. I saw somewhere on the forums a person's signature noting use of Dutty's Diamond on their Tilt. It may have been a typing error. From a geek's perspective, that's great. From a paying consumer's perspective, I'd rather not risk a brick.
As far as video goes, I'm not interested in storage space. 4GB MicroSDHC is fine. It is the video quality I'm mainly interested in.
I'm a TomTom fan, I should investigate this. I'm glad I don't have to pay monthly. Also, I know there are alternate solutions, some with free downloadable maps. In either case, my GPS question has been answered.
As I read, one question popped up in response to the data blocking. Does Kaiser Tweaks require a new ROM, or will it work on a stock Tilt? Also, what about Modaco NoData? I cannot view the page because it requires registration. I'd prefer not to pay for software to block data when the purpose of blocking data is to save money.
Thanks for the speedy responses.
PS. I still haven't heard much about Refurbs. Should I worry, or if I can find a refurb much cheaper, is that the best option?

You will not brick if you follow instructions.
Modaco NoData is free. it will run on stock.
Vid. Quality is pretty good - but also depends on how you rip it.

Just as an aside, let's not sell Mr, Duttythroy down the river just yet. Even though he has moved on, he has left behind some great roms that work great and are supported by many threads.
In response to zeezee and the video quality: In that case, I'll have fun with my encoders. I'll read the forum and do some of my own testing. I usually set up a good profile for various videos on different devices.
About Dutty's ROMs. They do seem a bit dated, but looking at his package set and some features, it's no wonder a lot of newer ROMs are popping up based on his. If anything, I feel I should try a recent one that is Dutty based. Although, If I decide to cook my own later on, I'll probably start with OEM as a base.
I've been reading more, and it definitely helps. I have a comparison of the 2008-06 and 2008-07 ROMs going on. I may put my results on my site. Thanks to all the chefs for the good ROMs.
For those using cooked ROMS: I see a lot of Touch Diamond ROMs out now. I know some work on the Tilt, with or without keyboard fix. Is that what I really want though as a Tilt user? Are there more Tilt-catered ROMs? Looking at it, I see Jacks V2 Full, WM6.1 ROM _ Ryncppr Version V6, L26_KaiserDiamond_V9, and HyperDragon III.
For audio listeners: Did any Tilt user find an adapter to use normal headphones? Did you decide to get bluetooth stereo headphones (expensive and use battery)? What are my choices? I'd assume since it's WM 6.1 I can play just about any video or audio out there with the use of other media players and creativity on my own part (yay for encoding).
PS. Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it!

There are many mini usb to 3.5mm adapters out there, but they are all still rather bulky.
I think you would be better off in the long run with quality BT head phones. But shop wisely , not all headsets play music, some just answer calls.
P.S. Yay freedom : Yay America
One question in addition to the above: I understand Internet will be blocked when using NoData. Will that prevent me from using the IM and MMS feature on my Messaging Unlimited plan?
I ask this because my brother is WIX Blocked and can only send SMS, but we pay for messaging which includes IM and MMS in addition to SMS.

I'm curious how NoData works compared to other methods.
Is it a software block? Does it disable portions of the hardware? How does it allow the IM while preventing other applications including Internet from being used? I'm under the assumption that IM is simply another app which communicates the same as the browser.
A link to a good thread, tutorial, or info page would be nice. The previous one linked asked me to login. It may have been a simple copy/paste error.

It changes registry settings.
The page is a forum and the software is on a thread.
I'm searching around for threads. Are there any "what ROM do you use" polls for Tilt users? Are those discouraged here? I'm trying to get an idea of popular and successful ones.
gps for free
To add a detail: I use google maps on the tilt. You need to download and run "gpst test", which you launch just before starting google maps... apparently, so I read here, google maps can't initialize the gps, it has to already be running...gps test does that for you. Then, launch g-maps, and on the bottom right, pull up menu, and check "use gps". Unfortunately, you need to do this everytime.
The use of gmaps is intuitive. It is NOT nearly as good for finding directions, and driving along, as ANY other gps I have used... it lack simple features linke "track up", for example, always being north up. BUT, it is free...you don't need to load the maps on the phone, it pulls them from the web, along with satellite and traffic data, if you wish. I find it is also more accurate than some other gps databases I have in terms of showing where a certain business is located.
I think yahooo may have a similar product, but I have not tested it.

Personally i love ROMeOSv2.3, very very stable and run light.
Here is a link if you need it: http://www.mindsofwisemen.com/fileso/other/ROMeOSv2.362808MMs.zip
I'll look into the ROMeOS version.
How does it perform in the "eye candy" department?
Thanks for the google maps info. I want something slightly better, so I may go towards paid software.

Well, "eye candy" its light and simple, i enjoy it
How is it in terms of speed including but not limited to 3D support?

Is it ok that I'm completely overwhelmed?

I literally just bought my at&t tilt today, and when I bought it the guy I got it from suggested I come here to do some digging on modifying/personalizing my Tilt to my liking. Now, I'm somewhat of a computer nerd. I can work through most issues with my PC without having to call customer service or hit up forums or anything. I have no experience with pocket PCs or windows mobile however.
I've read the multiple notices here advising to read around first before asking dumb questions, but I have to say that I'm still completely lost and don't even know where to begin. I really don't have complicated intentions, I'm almost 100% satisfied with the phone as-is...regardless, I still just have no idea what to even start with, so I figured I would just throw that out there and hopefully get pointed in the right direction. Hopefully I'll be able to take it from there, but the tutorials, wikis, and FAQs that I was advised to browse through first (and I apologize if I'm just not seeing it, again I'm a WM noob) just aren't getting me there.
All I'm really interested in doing is changing my home screen. Other things I want to do I don't even know if it's possible to do so, or if I even have to download anything!
So maybe just one more shove in the right direction?
Try This
This is not going to change your rom......This will give a new look totally...I think you'll like it...Install it from your desk top
Peace
Mike

I'm in the same boat as you. There is so much information here, it's quite overwhelming. I want to get the most out of my device, but I just don't have he time to really get into it.
Well you have to start somewhere, so just say where you want to go.
Would you like to make the phone look different?
Would you like to add your own ringtones?
Themes?
gps stuff?
roms?
seriously look at the second link in my signature.
I suggest that you use it for a while to get used to it, then read, then try changing it. Just my 2 cents.
I'm guessing your question is more basic than the answeres provided. If you just want to change your today screen, check out the "Today" applet under "Settings" on the start menu. You can choose from a variety of default plugins, and some of them have options you can change (simply click the options button if it's enabled). As you install more apps, they may have Today Screen plugins as well.
DO NOT GO THROTTLE LAUNCHER.... i like the guy that developed it but it has become obsolete with manilla 2d, personally i stayed away from flashing for a long time but now that i have started i'm addictted it provides alot better preformance from your ppc, i would highly recommend it
my favorite rom right now is the garmin dk4 manilla just make sure you read up before, its not that complicated once you get the hang of it. biggest thing is make sure to flash hard spl before you flash anything else
Here's some advice from someone who has had pocket pc's for a long time. I am also half a century old, so this advice comes from experience and not theory.
Keep your Kaiser/TyTN II/Tilt, whatever it is, as stock standard as possible. Do not flash new roms etc etc. This is the cause of most problems here unless you are really clued up on this, which it seems you are not at the moment. I won't even try it.
There are many third party apps out there and in here which will not affect the normal functioning and enjoyment of your device. Most of them are freeware.
Today themes are dime a dozen, heck, you can create your own with freeware apps like ThemegenCE (Desktop app which creayes the Tsk file for your device theme and even TKCreator which is a theme creation app directly on your device I (Also freeware and more basic than the former).
You need Total Commander, a freeware File Explorer much better than than one shipped wth the device. Quickmenu 2.7 makes using the device a pleasure and hardly requires the stylus. This provides a task manager, drop down menus, controls for device utilities like bluetooth, wifi, soft resetting etc. You also need Mortplayer which is the best MP3 player and is freeware and of course TCPMP with flashvideo bundle for video clips/movies/flash video from websites etc. This all for free. Heck, here are even freeware GPS apps for navigation out there, eg Amaze GPS and Nav4All, or just go full hog and buy the best like TomTom. TodayAgenda is a Today Plugin for calendar appointments and is one of the best and totally free. S2U2 developed by A_C from XDA is a cool screen saver/slide to unlock app which is free and highly customisable with animated gifs as wallpaper etc.
This would be a good start for you.

MAC

Searching for applications

Hello. I have been searching the internet, without any luck though of finding the programs i want.
First, i want a program, like ShopSavvy is for the Android, where i can use it on my touch pro to scan barcodes of products and find the best price.
Second, i am wondering if there is a way to have Google Street View on the touch pro. I have already seen KDKobes Google Maps Street View 2.3.1, from our forum. I was wondering though if there is an "official" or "fully working" program, as in KDJobes program unfortunately, location-data support and GPS integration aren’t working with this version of Google Maps.
Third, i want a program, like I-phone has, for Drinks (bartender?), same cool skins and graphics environment maybe?
Fourth, again like I-phone has a program where you record a song on the phone and then it goes through the internet and finds you possible matches.
Please, bare with me, as i a m new and maybe i didn't have enough luck or "easiness" finding these type of programs i want. Yes maybe i saw some "looking like them but weren't afterwards the programs i wanted, cause their functionality wasn't after all what i was searching for and was mislead by their Title Name.
So if you please know any "freeware/ or have to buy" programs that are exaclty as the one's i have described please feel free to post and tell me.
Thank you very much in advance,
Chris
let's see
1. barcode readers:
i-nigma barcode reader
QuickMark 3.3
Aura - but donno if this still works.....
2. Street view is officially supported by the latest Google Maps

3. didn't heard of such a program for wm
4. i know a program it's called Music ID
hope that helps try to search harder next time
search diamond beer for a drink app that turns your phone into a glass of alcohol , if you mean a bartender then just do more searching also the site Fuzemobility.com is now your best friend go there all the time look at everything there . if you still haven changed ROMS on your phone i suggest you go get NRG's new winmo6.5 build 3.0 ROM . it has alot of improvements over the stock ROM , anymore questions just ask me
Is there an app that uses the GPS to track how much you've cycled and your speed etc? I think such apps exist for the iPhone but I'm looking for something for windows mobile.
gotta love fuzemobility lol
