I know this is my first post here but I've done my best to search the forums and I haven't found anything that looks like it helps me.
I just got my AT&T Tilt yesterday. It came unlocked (I'm using it with T-Mobile) and has an HTC ROM installed as well as various other apps (Ms. Pacman, TomTom 6, SuperDoku, etc.). I had some issues with it locking up yesterday (similar to what I'm experiencing now but to a much, much lesser degree) when I was playing around with it but those issues somehow corrected themselves.
This morning I installed the Tilt keyboard fix that TaurusBullba posted on here back in June to fix some mapping issues. Since I installed and soft reseted, everything has been going kinda haywire. The Wi-Fi turned itself off and I can't turn it back on. When I slide out the keyboard the orientation stays in portrait mode. When I try to shut down the phone using the power button it hangs forever. Now, actually, half the time I press the power button nothing happens at all.
I've tried uninstalling the CAB but that didn't fix anything at all. I'm afraid to try a hard reset because, from my understanding, I'm going to lose everything that came pre-installed on my phone for me. I should probably also add that last night I installed the Google Maps CAB with no problems whatsoever. Is there some simple solution I'm overlooking? Thanks much!
I would advise that if you have tried soft resets to try and resolve the issues and it hasn't worked, then perhaps a hard reset?
It sounds as if the software you have installed as either caused the problems or exacberated them (ie made them worse).
With hard reset it wipes everything back to when you got it. If you are able I would suggest that you plug it into the computer and make sure ActiveSync backups up your contents. You may also want to use this get all the files on the main memory either to the storage card or to you're PC.
As this is yo're first post I don't know how au fait you are with the above that I have mentioned
The preloaded apps will be reloaded again. You won't have an empty ROM if you do a hard reset. It will be as if you just flashed the ROM again.
Thanks for the replies guys. I went ahead and did a hard reset and it looks like the only thing I lost (or at least the only thing I miss) was TomTom. I've already reinstalled that using a link I found on here, and everything seems to be good to go.
I still have no idea what might have caused the problems though, so I'm afraid that they might come back or I might repeat some dumb mistake I made. I guess I'll just have to live with that for now.
clear storage / hard resets no big deal, just expect to do it every other week while you're finding all the cabs that work (or dont work) for you..
I generally clear storaged every week when i first got my tilt until I found all the app's I liked that didn't have side effects
The following (long!) post was originally posted at the PointUI forum, but I thought it best to cross post it here. I've tried to organize it as best as I can and appreciate those with the patience to read it and the good will to offer help.
------------------------
My AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) is basically out of commision right now, and I can only track the source of the problems back to the latest update of PointUI (v1.02b, Feb. 4th 2008), as I've done nothing else with the phone since. However, seeing as how I've uninstalled PointUI and the problems persist (and are getting worse), I suspect a virus is afoot, or some other lovely problem.
Since the update, I've experienced the same problems as everyone else on this PointUI thread (system hangs on "running apps" screen and randomly), but in addition to that, several other things. I am running the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware. These have been my symptoms for the most part since then:
Periodically, animations between menus would slow down considerably and sometimes freeze for a moment, even when I had nothing else running in the background. This would happen for any menu: the cog, the bottom bar, favorites, etc.
The touchscreen would stop working (usually, only within PointUI). This usually happened when animations would slow down, but it would also occur alone, randomly. The hardware buttons would still work during touchscreen failure, usually, but sometimes they wouldn't, and I would have to soft reset.
Sometimes, the power button wouldn't work, and I would press it several times thinking I didn't do it hard enough the first few times. After ~20 seconds, the screen would turn itself off and on. When the screen was on, it would not responding to touches.
The PointUI top bar that appears when using any application would, at random, not work. By this I mean when I would tap it, it's like it wasn't even there -- the Start menu would come down, or the volume control, date/time, etc. depending on where I tapped it. Also, the top right button (red X, or the check mark) would not display correctly in programs or the today screen (a check mark when it should be an X, etc.), randomly, and would not be responsive.
Yesterday (Feb. 23rd), things took a turn for the worse. Here's what happened:
When I started up Tom Tom, the screen went completely non-responsive. Only buttons would work.
After exiting Tom Tom (in an attempt to restart it), the touchscreen would continue not to work, both in PointUI and regular old Windows.
Shortly following this, buttons would stop working, and the entire phone would freeze up. Couldn't turn the touchscreen on and off. I did a soft reset.
During startup, when it showed the AT&T logo, the screen dimmed itself to the lowest brightness setting (it never does this). It would remain this way all the way through the bootup process and into Windows as well, never getting any brighter. Even after going to the backlight settings and increasing the brightness, the screen would get brighter, but would never turn off.
Once in Windows, the touchscreen was completely non-responsive. Buttons would still work, but everything would move really slow.
The screen would never turn itself off. Also, when pressing buttons, the screen would never get any brighter.
After mashing the buttons a bit (in anger, yes, but lightly), the touchscreen alignment application came up, asking me to touch the screen in a few places. This worked.
Then, a call came in. The screen froze during the animation for the notification of an incoming call. Also, the phone started to ring, but within 1 second stopped. However, it would vibrate nonstop (my phone is setup to ring and vibrate at the same time) till the end of the earth!
At this point, none of the buttons would work, not even the power button. Did a soft reset.
This was followed by the same exact symptoms ~4 times (touch screen not working, never turning off and staying at the same brightness level, etc). Outgoing calls would work ok, but each time, a call would come in and freeze up my phone.
Eventually, after several resets, the touchscreen would work without having to mash the buttons to get the touchscreen alignment app running. However, it would still freeze on incoming calls (only).
Somewhere between all the resets, I realized that sliding out the keyboard would never switch the screen to landscape. I can still type and my text would show up on-screen, and screen taps still work properly (even touchflo), but all of this would occur while still in portrait mode.
Lastly, the power button would only work once. It can turn the screen off, but not back on, ever.
Somewhere, between the resets, I uninstalled PointUI, which did nothing. I also tried running Sprite Backup, which would never open (and still doesn't at time of writing)!
Before the PointUI update, none of these symptoms were present (earlier release was v1.01b, used since early January). After the update, they began creeping up, getting worse over time. I have installed nothing else since the update, and have only ever sync'd the phone with my computer to charge it.
Today (Feb. 24th), it started getting a little worse...
When I make calls, sometimes the microphone doesn't work at all. I can hear the person I'm calling, but they can't hear me.
Sometimes, the green phone button won't start the phone application.
Power button isn't turning off the screen anymore at all.
This is the current status of the phone. Weathered, battered and beaten, it marches on, still capable of opening the HTC Audio Manager and playing my MP3's in consolation.
Any help regarding the source of these issues is greatly appreciated.
Some additional notes/summary:
I am running the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware.
I haven't dropped the phone or let it get wet.
I may hard reset sometime this coming week, probably Monday. The first thing I'll do is reinstall PointUI v1.02b, and maybe TomTom. We'll see how that goes.
You know, the more I read this post, the more it seems like a virus.
Man... just hard reset/flash a new rom and be done with it.

I thought the above was the reason we DIDN'T have WM viruses?
Virus + Hard Reset = Problem solved?

I agree, at least that way you know if its hardware or software related and you stop fighting a losing battle

That's why I haven't bothered with any of the anti-virus programs out there. Why bother having a constant drain on the system resources when you can do a hard reset, and restore all the cabs & hacks in under 30 minutes?

Just an update here, my phone started acting up again ~5 days ago: freezing on incoming calls, not switching to landscape when sliding out the keyboard, never turning the screen off, etc. 3 days ago it got better, and I was able to run Sprite Backup and tried to restore the phone back to my pre-PointUI days. It had to reset, and on that same reset, Sprite didn't run -- the phone just booted into Windows, and all my problems came back.
Last night, I got a call that froze up my phone again. So I reset it, and by surprise, Sprite Backup ran and started restoring my phone. Now it's back to the way it was in January, and everything works perfectly! This backup was made before I ever installed PointUI.
Bottomline, no PointUI, no problem.
However, I should say that with v1.01b, I never experienced any of these issues. Because of my experience, I'm not giving any test versions a try, but I may install 1.03b, when it comes out. Definitely doing another backup before that too.
Thank you everyone.
Sounds to me more like a hardware issue, perhaps with your SD card.
I had the same issues you were havingh, but without ever having installed PointUi on my Kaiser.
I was using Dutty's Rom version 7 with radio 1.27.xx
only installed aps : TomTom and SPB brain training
So it would seem this is a WM or TomTom triggered issue....
My Kaiser just started doing this very same thing today. I'm running the standard AT&T WM6.1 ROM and have been successfully since December 07. I have a 6GB SD card with TomTom on it, also have had no issues until now. Today, the screen didn't switch into landscape upon sliding the keyboard out; the camera freezes and/or is unresponsive; power button doesn't work (on OR off; with or without SD card inserted); couldn't pick up a call earlier today; TomTom freezes when loading; WM player freezes while loading media.... I have not installed any apps on this thing since January. Seems to me like some memory corruption going on, possibly page file related.
I *did* notice that I had about 45MB worth of temp internet files cached and cleaned those up earlier today after these symptoms started. Didn't fix the problem though, but being low on main storage may have contributed to the corruption problem.
I had hoped I wouldn't need to hard reset my phone but here we go....
Ever since returning from repairs, my Kaiser is giving me more problems than before.
First, I apparently lost the ability to hard reset my phone using the 2 softkeys & soft reset button method.
For more: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384581
First thing I did when I got my phone back, was flashing the latest ROM from Dutty (Dutty's Official WM6.1 5.2.19209 Release). After performing numerous installations and soft resets, my device went crazy after yet another installation and soft reset.
Just before my Kaiser takes me to the Today screen after (re)booting, the phonepad pops up and seems to be 'pushing numbers out of itself'. Confused by the explanation? Just take a quick look at the short vid I made.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGkot2-mbbI
(Fast forward to 01:00 to see it going crazy. Long after the vid ends this continues)
Anyone got a clue as to why this is happening? Or has my incompetence reached new heights and is that to blame for my problems?
Thanks in advance
P.S.: In the meantime I have hard resetted my device, but I'm still curious...
call at&t and get a replacement. Easiest thing to do.
Try load the factory default ROM.

The kaiser has been known to act haunted, thats why it comes in black.
Fix: When applying this fix avoid looking at the screen to avoid the image inside the device that you want to exorcise. Unplug fully and remove battery to prevent an escape through the wires; also ensure that you disconnect any usb devices to avoid an escape to your computer.
Once you have isolated the device. Find the packaging and insert carefully, ensuring that it is packed safely to avoid any breakage resulting in an escape to your home. Then ship to the place you purchased it from and ask them to send you back one that is not possessed.
Good luck.

Is that a hint for a career change...... the loss of one's tilt is quite a dramatic event.
@alexn2
I already called in help from the Vatican, but it will take some days before the first batch of exorcists arrives (haunted was a sarcastic expression). Any explanation in the meantime?
@gqstatus0685
This device is a replacement which I got back last week. But it seems to me that I will need to send it back again. Another week without my Kaiser...

care to sign up for ma 4th installement of the exorcist?
Damn this is scary. Call the Ghost Busters!!
WTF?
I just don't get it...
I now have my 3rd Kaiser, since I had issues with the first two. One of the problems my second phone had was the 'haunted' problem as described above.
My Kaiser has been working like a charm for several weeks. I first used the stock ROM, then switched to Dutty's ROMs. I used 3 ROMs: Apr16, Apr29 and Jun07 release.
I installed the Jun07 release today. After installing and configuring the same software I had before upgrading the ROM, guess what?
HAUNTED AGAIN... WTF?
I loaded the ROM, did multiple hard-resets, soft-resetted after customization, loaded CABs, configured them, rebooted several times and when I had finally configured every app => TOTAL Clusterf*ck... (again)
Sometimes it does boot normally BUT when I press the 'Send'-button and the dialer opens => Kaiser goes LOCO again...
Anyone got any idea as to why this happens?
NOTE: I have the latest SPL + Radio NEON 1.58.25.17 (included in the ROM)
I did some additional testing. I had SPB Pocket Plus installed an had the Safe Boot option enabled. So I did some testing in safe mode.
The phone boots 'normally' to safe mode. No apps or services are loaded, and I can open the dialer and even enter numbers to dial. But when I try to delete a number using the backspace in the dialer => again haunted
I just discovered the problem. I always try to install most of my apps to my Storage Card.
Some of those apps is the Microsoft RDP (remote desktop) client.
Installing it to the Storage Card caused the phone to go crazy. It has to be installed to the Main Memory.
NOTE: After discovering the problem, I did find other posts across the forum reporting problems if the app isn't installed to the main memory. Since I found the cab on someone's 4Shared account, I wasn't aware of the installation requirements.
Thanks anyway for the support given
As posted before, I very recently flashed Dutty's Diamond V1 Build 19588 ROM (Jun07).
Today I tried playing WMV files with Windows Media Player for some performance testing. I loaded my first file and whenever I tried something, like fast-forward, switch to fullscreen mode,... my phone crashed and soft-resetted itself.
Guess what I got when the phone booted => The crazy dialer (haunted edition)... It kept doing this after every soft-reset until I removed the MicroSD card. The video I was trying to play was located on the Storage Card, so there might be a relation.
While I have done additional testing under the same circumstances, I haven't been able to simulate the problem.
I'm still clueless, so as always are ideas welcome...
stock rom and everything, just no bloatware.
this morning it worked perfect, about 2 hours later is all retarted.
1)the backlight is dim and doesnt get as bright as its supposed to unless i plug it in
2)when i slide the phone open the screen doesnt flip the other way
3)getting multiple "cannot execute" errors of clocknot.exe, repllog.exe, calnot.exe. these pop up and i have to click OK 20+ times and less than a minute later they came back on again. actually now i cant even get them to go away.
4)i left my phone alone for a while after realizing something was wrong with it and when i came back to it was just constantly vibrating, i dont know for how long but it killed 60% of my battery.
software i installed is just your basic stuff, tomtom, touchflo cube, htc touch dialer and touch today setup, htc home customizer and battery status and i think thats pretty much it.
anybody have any idea on what might have happened? like i said, the phone worked perfect this morning. i put it down, went a swim, came back and it wasnt working right so i did a soft reset and it didnt fix anything. i put it back down, took a nap, came back and it was vibrating and then i did another soft reset and thats when i got all the error messages. so i did another soft reset and still doesnt want to work.
wait, now for some reason it seems to be OK after another soft reset. I DONT GET IT.
so now i received and sent a text message and then closed the phone, it locked and turned the screen off. i then put it on the charged and the screen wouldnt turn back on now matter what button i pushed. but the lights on top blinked and when i opened it the keyboard lit up. so once again....another soft reset
you probably should hard reset your phone. but be aware that it will erase evrything on ur phone and return it back the way it was, so backup ur info
Yes, I second that. Make sure to back up your data before hard-resetting, though, as you will lose it all (contacts, files, everything).
To hard reset the phone, press and hold the two soft keys (buttons on the front that have a dash on them; next to the send and end buttons) while pushing the stylus into the reset hole in the bottom. If you do it correctly, a white screen will come up asking you if you want to do this, and just follow the steps until it is finished.
Please post back and tell us the result.

Use the latest version of "SPB backup" to backup all data before you hard reset and you restore the all applications after a hard reset or even a ROM Upgrade.
P.S: I don't work for SPB... I just like the software

Don't just back everything up as you may just re-introduce the problem on restore!
Back up your contacts and volotile data only (sync it with Outlook if you use it).
Hard reset and then install 1 app/util at a time and test the device each time to check stability.
Hang on a second...
Before you hard-reset...
Open your favorite file explorer application (I use GSFinder, but the default WM6 File Explorer should be fine), and browse to the Storage Card folder. If there's more than one, keep reading.
I store lots of applications on the microSD card itself, and I often take the card out of the Tilt, and put it into a card reader for faster file transfer. Sometimes, this results in the Tilt thinking I have multiple microSD cards when I put it back in. I haven't quite nailed down what causes this (I haven't searched, either, the answer might be on XDA-dev somewhere).
The end result is, the Tilt is looking for stuff that isn't in the /Storage Card folder. Instead, the phone recognizes the card as /Storage Card2 or /Storage Card3.
I have run into the EXACT same problem you've got, with the same errors. Every time, I've been able to correct it by removing the physical card, and then deleting all the /Storage Card (1,2,3) folders that are still on the phone.
After you do that, just insert the card again, and it will be recognized as simply /Storage Card without any numbers after it. Now the applications will work properly, as WM6 will be looking at the right folders.
ok sorry, havent been back on. phone was working great until last night and then it started acting up again. after multiple soft resets it started working fine again this morning.
there is only one storage card listed so thats not my problem but thank you for the idea.
looks like ill just take any stuff of the phone i want when i get home and do a hard reset. do they replace these phones for software issues with a stock ROM?
happened again, should i try to see if they will replace the phone?
anyone know if i need to call to do that or do i need to go to a certified at&t place?
If you are using the Stock ROM and have performed a hard reset and it still has problems then return it under warranty.

There are no more certified ATT places around here, everything is by phone and mail. If it is still under warranty thats what I would do if you are unsure of it's long term condition.
i am still stock ROM. it locked up on me again yesterday and i did a hard reset. hopefully it wont happen again. i dont feel like customizing my phone from scratch yet again
Hi all
I am a newbie here but I have been modding and reg editing my phones for some time. Today I had a serious incident which I have never seen before. My password prompt came up as usual after the tomeout period but the 4 digit simple password wasn't accepted. The password is DEFINATELY right and when I press cancel I get a brief flash of the today screen. So unable to go around this I hard reset the device. Fine. Reboot. Fine. Restore a Backup from 3 days ago (SPB Backup) and boom another password screen appears. One I have never seen before. After getting the password wrong a couple of times a countdown timer appears and doubles the number of seconds I have to wait between attempts. 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 8 seconds, 16 seconds etc etc. This looks and behaves like a virus but HOW can it be in my backup?
Please help me recover my beloved X1.
Cheers
Magyver
Update..
I am quite surprised not to have had any replies to this as usually this forum is quite active.
I tried a new tack last night and reinstalled my SPB backup on a hard rest (again) but this time I only restored certain elements, which SPB Backup allows you to do, this succeeded in getting my PIM data back (phew) so then I tried some but ot all of the registry. Eventually I was able to incrementally bring the phone back up to "4 days ago" HOWEVER in this process my phone memory "storage" section became full! Of what, I have no idea as when I do a search there isn't any big stuff in there. I am totally baffeled, so if anyone has any ideas observations comments on how I can deep scan the "storage" memory to see what is going on I would be greatful. There does appear to be an awful lot of "manila" files in there but I can't remember what I installed or removed which might require manilla files.
Come on guys, I feel like that teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off;
"Bueller, Bueller, Bueller.........."
1 - Are you on a custom ROM
2 - Just look whats on your storage card and tell us what it is and which ones are newest and taking up the most space.
3 - What did you last install before it broke first time?
both official roms and custom roms have bugs
but virus's are not cross platform so a pc virus could never work on a wm device because it's not the same os
and the market % of wm devices mean few virus makers will spend too much time making custom virus's for your phone
