Root my 1.6 Donut? (Help-> Downgrade to RC29) - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Rogers HTC Dream, the previous owner said they put 1.6 Donut on it but it is NOT ROOTED. The loading screen says T-mobile G1.
How can i root my phone? Thanks for any help or insight!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Found that by doing a search on google about rooting g1's
It is possible to break your phone and brick it but only if you download and flash the wrong radio file... which can be avoided if you have two cents of brain power.

hmm, that guide says to check the "Build number" mine says DRC83, the guide doesn't tell me what to do with this build.

i found this guide for anyone else wondering...
hope it works.
http://all-google-android.com/googl...ile-g1-modders/root-access-redone-for-the-g1/

The method i posted above isn't working for me, particularly the bootloader part to flash the 1.5 image.
Can someone pleaseee help me, i hate stock ROM. =(

Hey guy's this is very fusterating... I just need help downgrading to RC29!
I have formatted my SDcard (FAT32)(not quick format). and placed DREAIMG.nbh on it. In bootloader i get the message "Not Allow 00028002"...
Ideas? Please help me troubleshoot.

Look for cyanogen wiki there is great guide on downgrading dream phones don't have link as I'm not on pc

Thanks for the reply, i'll try their downgrade procedure.

I followed the wiki procedure, no luck same error in bootloader.

Welcome and good luck to you on rooting your phone.. A rom suggestion hen you get rooted try out superd 1.2 or try superd latest superd1.6
1.2 is most stable and to me fastest and does not require "danger spl"
1.6 has more features and goodies but requires danger spl

It didn't work lol, ill try superd when i am rooted though.

Lol saw that I'm not on pc so typing and send message not fast enough.. Get the same error?

Yep same error.

my SPL is 0.95.0000 if that makes a difference. Which i don't think is the rogers SPL? So it was probably changed.

Not familiar with Rogers sorry can't be anymore help I would start reading info and help bit I'm limited ATM I'm on a mobile device not on a pc

if you have already had experience in rooting a phone, then what's stopping you on rooting this one?
if you follow the rooting guide, you will be fine. and if you follow the thread about the hero rom you want, you will be fine. there are certain things you have to do to get hero but those guides will have all that explain within their respective threads.
Yeah ur right, nothing is stopping me from rooting this one, but my question is, the other phone was the. RC33 build so I had to downgrade to RC29 to gain root, now, do I have to do the same for this one? CRB43? Or how do I gain root on this one? Thnx

Alright, that's what I needed to know, thank u so much
alright, so everything work out well, i think.
i got all done, now i just have a problem. I got the Hero ROM and when the phone starts, i get a loop in the HTC screen...... what can i do???
I had my phone looping for some reason that escapes me right now, I just installed Dude's 1.5 Cupcake and then went to SuperHero v2, it launched just fine but was a bit slow. I just got finished installing JACHero 1.8v4 and it is by far the best Hero build.
Also, on SuperHero V2 my phone took a looong time to boot up.

1 Click Rooting...

Ok I've done the 1 Click Root process. The problem is, I totally UNrooted my phone before I did the 1 click root. I tried to load a Hero rom I got off the www.theunlockr.com website but I had to update the SPL which bricked my phone. I did wipe first so thats not the problem. I don't know what went wrong when I bricked my phone. I am getting a new from t-mobile(I kinda told them the donut 1.6 update screwed my phone up).
Now I want to root again with the 1 click but do I need to go back to the original build RC29 build or whatever it was in order to root with the 1 click ? And when I flash to a new rom do I need to update the SPL again?
READ FIRST!! I dont know where so search. I dont feel like finding you all the guides warnings and post about it. There are many precautions to take while flashing hero and even if you follow all of them to the "T" you still have a big chance of bricking your phone so use the Search Bar

The thing is I've flashed all sorts of rom's before, but I wanted to try the 1 click rooting process. I think what happened is I flashed the SPL before I flashed the updated radio. I was doing some research on the whole thing. I flashed the SPL first.
if you use the DREAIMG.nbh to go back to rc-29, it is really easier to use the telnet commands then it is to root with the one click imo, you can use one-click root, but you have to find the newer version of the recovery flasher, and if you use it and don't flash a custom rom, then the system will overwrite the custom recovery image with the stock one. if you use the telnet commands then you will overwrite the stock recovery image with a custom one, so the telnet commands are more stable
to update your spl, make sure you have a pvt board in bootloader (camera and power) and that your radio is 2.22.19.26I (make sure you have that radio, not just assume after you flash it) then you can get rid of all the user error in flashing the 1.33.2005 SPL.

Were you already rooted when you did the 1 click root? - if you were then that might have been were the mess up happened because once you do the one click root you have to flash a rom (probabably cyanogen would be best) to continue or you lose root.
Following that question if you were already rooted and had hard spl and new radio - the one click might have cause you to lose that.
You have to flash from hard spl to danger spl
Radio should be newest or second to newest
Also it is said to flash hero rom right after flashing spl. - Which means not turning off your phone or rebooting after flashing
- I saw a video were they were at the rainbow boot screen and they flashed the Danger Spl and then inserted a new sd card that had hero and flashed it without rebooting.

is one click still ok ?
I've had my G1 for about a yr now. Watching the mods grow . Never had thought about rooting just because I didn't want to have to keep changing to keep up to date. Then the one click came out and it was time. Ordered my 8gig class6 sd and before I got it Google did this C&D to CY. I see people saying they are doing the 1 click method and the links they put on are before the C&D. Can it still work ? Also everyone who tries to give directions how to get root and roms are different. Even this thread has been changed or something was left out. Is there a true one click method ? I tried theUnlockr way 3 times and I still wound upwith a wiped phone. Please Help Me ...

one click will not work in donut 1.6. it will be patched, there is a thorough guide in my sig. i also have links i can give you for cm 4.0.4 and 4.1.11.1 if you want them.
1-click root only works with CRC1 and lower. Personally, I prefer to downgrade to RC29 and manually root it. I've done it about 20 times that way and have never once had an issue. In fact, I did it last night and today that way and both phones are rooted with Hero ROMs and running perfectly.
My advice, find a good tutorial (there are plenty, particularly the stickies on XDA on the subject) and download all necessary files ahead of time so that you aren't stuck in the middle of rooting looking for a file. If you want to flash the update "Danger" SPL, there is a combination radio/spl so that bricking is less likely. Search XDA for it. Also, check if you have PVT board first (camera+power). If not, brick it you will (or more than likely will). If I had to guess the main reason for problems and bricks it is that people rush the process and skip steps because they started the process without reading the whole tutorial.

I was rooted before I did the one click but I downgraded to RC29 with DREAIMG.nbh file. I did the 1 click process fine. I figured that what fxcked up my phone is that i flashed the custom SPL before I flashed the new radio first. I'm pretty sure thats what messed it up. I wanted to the Amon Ra's Recovery image and I didn't know how install that with out doing the 1 click root process.
ya if you flash spl before raidio that's what messed you up ! always radio first then spl . but you know that now .can you get in recovery at all ?

No I can't get passed the G1 boot screen. Its ok though T-Mo is sending me a "LIKE NEW" G1. I told them the donut update screwed my phone up. I can't believe I did the SPL first but its a mistake that could have cost me more then a 19.95 delivery fee that IS being waived by T-Mo.
But heres the question with 1 click root do I need to downgrade to RC29 or no?

Sounds good. Before screwing things up I always had good success in flashing roms trying multiple roms in a day. My favorite is the xRom. I am curious to see if eventually there will be a Cliq rom.

HTC Dream Help, please.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum. So...Hi
Anyways, I've got a problem with my Rogers Htc Dream. I was trying to root it and was following a guide on youtube. Then i realized rooting for T-Mobile G1s and Rogers HTC Dreams were different. Now i notice when i turn on my phone it shows a T-Mobile screen instead of the regular Rogers loading screen. I guess i installed the T-Mobile firmware on my phone. I checked in settings the current firmware im running is now 1.0. So, i'm wondering if anyone can help me put back on rogers firmware on my phone and also link me to a Rogers HTC dream rooting guide. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I have that too.
Not really an issue. I just too happy to care when I finally rooted my Dream.

Okay so, the root worked for you? Everythings alright its just the start up screen that changed?
To get back to stock rogers firmware apply the update from rogers found here:
http://rogers.com/techsupport/
Then follow this guide to get your phone rooted and install cyanogenmod:

I'm abit scared to follow that guide because there seems to be some ifs about it, like it says avoid anything that writes to the kernel, otherwise you're dead. And it says you require a EBI1, how do I check if I have EBI1
"The Recovery Flasher utility will only work if you're on a version of Android that Rogers/HTC hasn't yet fixed.
If you are at the recovery screen, move on to the next step."
Well how do I know if they haven't fixed it? And if we can't use fastboot to flash images, as Rogers prevents it, then if this procedure goes south we're stuck? I can verify the MD5 of the SPL update ZIP 20 times, but that's not going to guarantee that when I flash it it's not going to brick my phone
edit: I booted with camera and power and it says hboot is 1.33.0009, does this mean I don't have to risk bricking when I root? The tutorial is for 1.33.0010.
I think that it makes it sound a bit worse than it is. I have never tried it but from what I have read if you boot a EBI0 kernel with a EBI1 radio it will just freeze. You will just have to pull out the battery, boot into recovery and then flash a EBI1 kernel on top.
Rogers is bad for releasing updates for their devices. All their Android devices still run cupcake, even the new LG Eve. This is to our advantage because none of the rogers firmwares are fixed. You can give the Recovery Flasher a try because the worst that will happen if you have a fixed rom is nothing.
If you have a 0009 spl you can follow the guide here to update your spl and recovery then start following the guide at Installing HTC System Image. You could also just use the method on the wiki for 0010, I cant see any reason that wouldn't work.
My phone is perfectly fine after the gaining root. So far not much of a difference, except for the virtual keyboard and two more screens and a few more apps and options.

I really want to root so I can install applications to the memory card, and to get 1.6, but I'm really really really scared that it's going to break. I got the phone from ebay, so I'm pretty sure if it breaks I'm out $300 bucks. I'm really at a cross road here!
Ya i was kinda scared the first time too. Then I just bit the bullet and did it. Try to read through the forums as much as you can to learn as much as you can about how your phone works. Also make sure that you understand each step completely and what it is doing to your phone. This is what I did and it made me feel a lot better about the process.
The main risk is flashing the radio and spl once you are done that the chance of bricking is almost none of not none. If you have any questions that you can't find answers to by yourself just ask and me or someone else on the forum will answer them for you.
Yeah, if you're on the Rogers HTC dream, just follow the Rogers heres your real root thread, and all the guides he post. And follow it while filling in the rest with logic.
You'll probably get lost like I did, don't be afraid to ask around.
does anyone know the warranty if it bricks?
Hey everyone, thanks for the help. I went through with the root and everything seems to be working fine. I can make phone calls and everything. I'm running a hero rom. The only thing thats different is it shows a T-Mobile screen instead of Rogers. I don't think thats a big deal, is it?

Help Please with upgrading 1.6 or 2.0

Hello this is my first post here as I'm having trouble with my G1
first of all last night I tried to upgrade from donut to eclair but I got nowhere, I just had a bricked phone wouldn't go past t-mobile and g1 logo. Today I fixed it but it will only run the RC7 & RC8 updates and not go any higher as there is always a failure or no verification.
I was wondering if you guys can help me get from 1.1 to 1.6 or 2.0. and root as that didn't work either
Thanks
I'd suggest starting with the root since you're already on a cupcake build.
Then you can flash you SPL and Radio and head to a good rom. The thing about 2.0 roms are that you need the danger, hard or hayruki spl to flash because your phone partition isn't large enough to hold the rom.
