Weird vibration gyro noise? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Stay with me now, I haven't seen anyone talk about this so this is either perfectly normal or something is wrong with my phone. I just got my phone today, but when you shake or lightly tap the top of the phone to your palm, the phone makes a noise as if something is lose inside, a rattle if you will.
To me it sounds like the internal weight that causes the phone to vibrate. I first noticed it simply setting the phone down on my desk this morning, and started trying to find ways to reproduce the noise (tapping to your palm works best)
What concerns me is that my G1 didn't make this noise, and i'm just wondering if everyone else's N1 does this. So if anyone can confirm my insanity, that would be great.

I can't say I am getting the same noise with my phone. (Thankfully)
I must say the biggest thing I **DON'T** miss is the SQUEEKY sounds my old G1 would make!!!!

No idea what youre talkin about

Hey, I totally know what you are talking about
Nothing is wrong with the phone Sounds like a normal plastic vibration. It is either the trackball or the accelerometer. Our it could be something else those are just my best guess.
As far as I am concerned it is just a little loose, but now that I think about it the headphone jack could be making the noise. That recedes into the phone body so requires a casing to insert the jack into the phone.
Nothing to be alarmed about.

Hrm, Well I can say its not the trackball (although that initially made the most sense!), I could still hear the noise wile holding the trackball. And I tried the same thing with headphones connected, and could still hear it. But, its reassuring that my phone isn't the only one doing this.

I get the same thing. Could be the vibra motor. like shaking a ps3 controller produces similar feedback of something moving around.

Yup, just wanted to make sure it was normal. I'm pretty sure this is accurate.

the rattle noise is most definatly the auto focus camera. It commonly affects the iPhone 3GS, it doesnt cause any problems, but if the rattle gets to you you can send it in if you so wish.

Hey, you are 100% correct!. I can hear it after when I have it snap pictures, exact same noise. I probably won't be able to stand it and will have it fixed/replaced. But that is most defiantly it.

i wouldnt exactly go sending it in.. this is normal.. mine does the same thing.. so does my mother's eris..

Mine does this as well and I too find it extremely annoying. Can anyone possibly confirm if they all do this and if it is normal or not?

Bump (10 char)

How anyone can find this extremely annoying is beyond me..
Stop using your phone as maracas I say.

My Nexus One just recently started doing this, I haven't dropped it or banged it against anything either. It happens when I open and close any app that uses the camera.

Lol those squeeks were so fregin annoying.

i have the same thing on HTC Desire

I have the same rattling noise. I even hear it when I have the haptic feedback on. Each vibration leads to this rattling/crackling noise. Super annoying.

indeed it's the camera. i especially notice it when using the barcode scanner app.

chirp sound when vibrate?

anyway dont know if its normal but my wing didnt do this before, when i set my phone to vibrate sometimes the vibration makes this chirping sound...it's really annoying specially when i have it silent (just vibration)
anyone know what im talkin about?
(note is not a sound coming from the speakers it comes within the phone like the vibrating sound)
How about recording the sound with a microphone.. Then upload it here and we can hear the problem.
Just a thought
Yea I get it to !!!!! I thought it was just the part that vibrates..... vibrating on a piece of plastic inside. Hvnt took it apart to find out though.
Yes. I get it too. But since my phone is in the holster most of the time, that noise is dampened. I have started to ignore it
sound
have you guys dropped your phone before? cuz ive dropped mine about twice (forgot i had it on my lap when getting out of the car) im thinking thats why its making this noise...

That's not the noise he's referring to, the noise he is talking about only occurs when the buttons are hit. It's more of a software noise, something programmed into the ROM.

Sounds like something loose

Hi !
I got this phone last week, but i think something is loose on it. When i put on my desktop i can hear something loose, and when i use my finger and knocking softly on the back beside the camera, i hear something loose. Is this normal or is it broken ? I cant hear anything loose if i just shake it.

Mmm i dont hear anything like that on my Diamond? If mine was making a strange noise that would worry me a bit! Is the back cover on ok? Also when you take the back cover off, do you still hear anything?
Strange!
yes
the sound is when i am knocking with my finger beside camera....sounds like a screw loose or something...i have removed the battery and batterycover but it still there
isn't the stylus magnet gotten loose? Can you make it with or without stylus?
You are not the first one with loose magnet and it's not that big deal to fix.
Hi !
This give me hope. What is Stylus magnet ?

The magnet that holds the stylus into the phone. Try removing your stylus and tapping the phone in the same spot, does it still rattle? If the magnet was loose, the tip of the stylus could be rattling around near the camera.
Isn't your stylus getting 'sucked in' ?
strange sound
It is not the magnet i think....but could it be that the sound should be there ? The phone is vibrating when there is a call, and maybe its normal ? or am i just hoping thats the case ?
yes
Everything is working great but when putting the phone on the desktop i get the feeling something is loose since the scrambling sound.
When i remove pen and battery and knocking on the flat area where battery should be, then i get a small scrambling sound.
I always thought that noise came from the autofocus-lens of the camera ......
When i shake the phone there is no noise. When i put it on the desk there is this small noise.
But everything works fine.
loose
Hi !
I had a talk to HTC and there will be a small sound when knocking easy with finger on backside phone. But you should not hear anything when shaking the phone. And you should only hear the sound when having the phone beside your ear and knocking with finger. Anyway my sound was to high and i could hear the sound with earplugs so got recommendation by HTC to return the phone. I was also in 2 other shops and listening by knocking on them and there was also a very smll sound.
Thanks for all answers...
Hmmm, my Diamond has a rattle too, but it's quite loud...
I can hear it easily from a meters distance (my arms aren't any longer )..
Did anyone find out what is causing the rattle?
Thanks.
edit: I think it's a part of the camera (autofocus). If I autofocus and let go of the button, I hear the exact same "click" as I hear when tapping the backside of the phone. It also looses the autofocus, I'm afraid this may be a defect...
Mine is in a great condition
My device is working super!~

[Video] There's something moving inside my Nexus 4

I'm sure you heard about those click sounds when you shake your device which could be the autofocus.
But I don't think this is normal, is it:
(It is a 10sec Video recorded WITH my N4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG8sesskCYA&feature
/e How the hell does the youtube tag work?
those quiet *click*s you hear everytime it "swaps over" (don't know how to say it) - that comes from inside the phone.
Anyone else have the same "problem"? :/

Yeah, it's the processor fans

LOL theres no fan in your phone!
i believe those clicks would be your accelerometer.
I was watching a video earlier today (posted somewhere on the forum), and I believe it's the little piston thingy you push with the SIM ejection tool moving around. If you eject your SIM and stuff the section a little, you'll notice the rattle go away. Also, if you hold that side of the phone firmly, you should notice the rattling noise lowers.
I don't let it bother me though. I don't intend on rapidly moving my phone or shaking it a lot.

Accelerometers now work by measuring the movements of atoms. The chip doesn't produce any audible vibrations unless it falls of the PCB.
Could be a component from the vibrator, I heard they used a linear type in this phone as opposed to the common rotation style.
Its either the sim or your loose volume rockers (they rattle too..haha).
Thanks for your answers.
I just put out my sim card and it is a little bit loose inside the holder but that doesn't produce those sounds. Also it is not the volume rocker or the on off button ..
And this is no "rapidly moving" like you see in the video .. its pretty slightly.

It's the volume buttons sliding. Notice that when the Nexus 4 is in a case it doesn't make those noises?
Why do I get the feeling a lot of people are actually trying their absolute hardest to find any fault with their devices? Just use the damn thing and stop whining about it. First we get people asking if they should RMA rev.10s just because they're rev.10s and now this. This site should be renamed XDA Whingers...

Sorry cannot stop picturing the Alien movie in my mind
I can hold the volume rocker while moving my phone and the sounds still appear.
@Azurael: I just want to make sure if my device is damaged or not. If you don't care, just ..dont post in here. Thanks.

He just wanted to know what it is, he never said that he wants to RMA it or something like that.
Whining about something isn't the same as trying to find out what it is.

It's the little thing you have to push in order to eject the SIM card. I actually ripped my phone open to get to the source of the problem.
It's not easy to tell but it seems like the direction (where the sound comes from) could really be the SIM Card .. so it's normal that those sounds even appear when the sim card holder isn't even in the phone?
I have this problem and this bothers me a lot. It seems that the noise comes from the processor or camera area. Does someone has fixed it.

Fix
The fix is very simple. Just attach a small peace of tape on the left side of sim card holder. The noise will disapear.
I have it too.
I hear the same 'click' sound from my phone too. And it seems it comes from the 'camera' area.
I can reproduce the 'click' sound without even moving the phone. What I do is:
Go to the 'camera' (Stock)
Turn on 'flash' from settings
Click a picture
Swipe from right to open that image and click the image to center it.
The 'click' sound will be produced. Sometimes there are two 'click' sounds and my phone reboots.
Don't know why this happens but it bugs me quite a bit.

I thought I was the only with this problem. Its good to know I'm not the only with this issue. I think its has to do with the camera, I hate when it reboots.

It's the auto-focus camera lens. All auto-focus cameras on phones do it.

[Q] Nexus 6 Vibration Clicking

I upgraded from a Nexus 5 and am now a proud owner of a Nexus 6. The issue I'm having is that occasionally the haptic feedback on my phone will have weird clicking noises as i'm typing. I have read MANY people having this issue, but i'm not sure if I should get this swapped out or not? Any advice would be appreciated, other than the annoying random clicking of the vibrating motor (which isnt an OS sound nor the camera lens), my device seems flawless. I have heard people swapping them out and getting screens that are tinted yellow/pink though.
P.S. I also have a weird noise when my Nexus 6 starts wirelessly charging.....you hear the sound from the speaker and then the vibration motor makes a hissing noise.....anyone else have that?

Dude I have the same "issue" with the hepatic feedback. Some say it's a manufacture tolerance, some it is de IS of the camera moving by the vibration motor, some that it is the speakers. I really don't know what to think now and I am starting to get used to . I am afraid of replacing it because another manufacture problem could appear.
Because my unit beside this, again, "issue" it's flawless like yours.

Any issues recording video? Check out a thread I started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/video-recording-constantly-refocuses-t2980109
If you listen closely to the video I posted, you can here it refocusing in the video. And when I shake it, I hear the same sound. If you are experiencing this, I would get it replaced. I sent mine back yesterday.

Well I swapped it out and it seems the vibration click and hissing is gone. You can still hear the IS vibrate, but there isnt that added weird click with it thats random. Im on Sprint, now im having an issue with getting the Data activated UGHH! There is a ! next to the Signal bars and LTE keeps flashing.......durn
So the IS still clicks/vibrate?
Definitively a manufacturing tolerance issue or design one.

I dropped it. Wanna confirm a few things.

Hey guys. I dropped my Mi 5 while it was not in the case. Luckily everything is intact.
I just wanted to check, so I shook it, and there's a rattling sound that comes when I shake it perpendicular to the screen. Something might have been knocked loose, but I'm still hoping it's the OIS or something.
Secondly, when I put my ear close to the phone, I can hear the high pitched sounds you can hear from old routers which have those rapidly blinking LEDs. Or from multi way plugs which are of poor quality.
I didn't think to check these things before I'd dropped it, and now I can't.
Can you guys check?
I do hear some clicks when I shake it - sounds like something that's supposed to be a little loose, it's a very regular sound and I suspect you're right by suspecting it's the OIS.
No modem-like sounds though. At all. And my device is one week old in my hands, always in a case, never dropped.
@zoejo Thanks. Could you try putting your ear right up to the back of the phone, near the flash, as if you're listening to a call, but with the back facing you?
It's good to know the shaking is audible for your undamaged device. I thought it might be a ticking bomb, which could paralyse my phone at any time.

I just did it, without the cover too. I hear absolutely nothing. I tried combos of Wi-Fi/4G on and off and also moved to the bathroom to avoid environment noise.
Just to add a bit more info, my "loose piece/shaking sound" sounds a lot like a ticking wrist watch (a bit faster or slower depending on how fast/slow I shake the phone).

Yes, that's exactly what it sounds like.
Well, maybe the damage from the phone dropping is what caused my router sounds. Or maybe I just have sensitive hearing.
Thanks, man.

I suppose the drop made it loose, more than it's supposed to be. Or it could be a minor manufacturing difference between units. Thanks.

Maybe. Although I hear them with and without a case/cover - a rubber case that pretty much locks them in place.
I might be wrong but it's irrelevant nonetheless - it seems to be normal, as your input confirms. Thanks.
