Dear fellow seniors,
I'm new to this forum and i recently bought a htc hd. I'm totally new to smartphones and i've browsed through many pages in this forum but i can not understand a single thing written in it. I'm stupid, yes, but i'm willing to learn. So i hope someone can help me answer my queries below please!
1. If i want to upgrade to windows mobile 6.5 will this void my warranty? Is this really safe?
2. What does ROM stand for? And what does ROM do?
3. I see many ppl writing cooking class or chefs etc. What exactly does it mean by cooks/cooking class/chefs?
4. Occassionally my phone will turn on data transfer and connects to my service provider, which is incur me costs. I'm already connected to WiFi so how do i stop this automated turning on of data transfer? I will only use the internet when i'm connected to WiFi because i do not want to pay for the services.
Many thanks in advance,

1) Unless it's done by your provider, yes it will void the warranty unless you were to put everything back before sending it in. (Changing to a custom ROM voids the warranty, but again, if you set everything back, they wouldn't know).
2) ROM stands for Read Only Memory. So just as it sounds, it's memory that you shouldn't be able to change and only read from (not write to). The ROM has the OS and everything else saved on the phone. It's most like a Solid State Drive.
When you change your ROM, you change to w/e the new ROM has. Therefore this allows to change the OS and programs. This way, you can put win6.5 on the HD along with the latest and greatest versions of manila.
3.) cooks/chefs are those who make (cook) the new custom ROMs. W/e is in the ROM depends on the Chef.
4) Look up "nodata" for windows mobile.
Lastly, all this is in the sticky threads. So read the "flashing for dummies" threads and pretty much everything else that's stickied in the ROM development section and you'll be fine
Flashing to a WM 6.5 Rom will void your warranty, but you can always flash back to a stock ROM. If done right, HTC will never know that a custom ROM was installed on your device.
About a month ago my HD was broken. I flashed stock ROM back and sent my HD back to HTC for repairs. I don't think they found out about it, because they repaired my HD free of charge ^^
if something goes wrong read the part when you flash the rom with ruu and there's all info when you srew up so relax and choose a steady and stable rom on this forum.

1) If its an official rom by your provider it will not void warranty. However Windows Mobile (WM) 6.5 will not be made officially for the HD, so to get it you will have to use a custom rom. Having a custom rom does not automatically void warranty its the means to getting it (Read Dummies Guide for more info - link provided below) which can be recoverable.
2) ROM = Read Only Memory. Good description by Svegetto above.
3.) The cooks or chefs are the developers which make custom (non-official) ROMS. Different ROM's contain different things, for example WM6.1 or WM 6.5. Then you also have manila (or sense) version, i.e. sense 2.1, sense 2.5 or latest builds sense 2.5.3. Then there is customization, themes, applications (apps) installed etc etc
4) As stated above NoData can help. I've attached for your ease
I'd advise you to read the forum rules, the wiki and the sticky threads (Threads at top of each forum which are full of useful information. They are called stickies as they are stuck to top of each forum). If you want to flash (upgrade) to a newer official or unofficial (custom) ROM read and follow this guide
I don't want this to become a personal Q&A, so best advice is read read read.

Hello there,
Great forum you guys have here.
I will be receiving my Diamond on Thursday from Orange. I have some questions and would be very grateful for your help and advice. I have looked across the site for answers but there's so much info it's difficult to know where to start!
Firstly, I understand I may need to flash the ROM to improve speed. Speed is very important to me and so should I need to do this, what ROM would you recommend - something simple, offering a good balance between memory consumption and speed please. Does the official HTC update help at all?
Secondly, what do I need to do to preserve the original ROM, just in case I need to get it back in order to return the phone.
Thirdly, can you provide me with a link that clearly explains the process of updating the ROM as i've never done anything like this before.
If there's anything else i've missed (such as settings changes - I know I should get rid of the Orange homepage in favour of HTC's for instance), please tell me - i'm eager to have my Diamond adequately set-up ASAP.
Thanks for your time & patience,
S.
well i got my diamond from orange a few weeks ago and i would like to know the same. The one thing i can tell you that it comes with rom 1.37 WWE and not the orange version which I thought was weird, the quick start book even shows the diamond with the orange rom. So if your the safe then you wont get a rom ruined by orange
Excellent, I hope the Diamond I receive is the same. I hate Orange extensions!
check out http://www.modmydiamond.info
Very useful site.
Thank you! Seems like a useful site...
Can anyone suggest what ROM to go for or a guide that details/reviews ROMS?
Thanks,
S
read , read & then read some more.
there are way too many ROMS to recommend.
workout what you wnat from a ROM then go find it.
i now this attitude sounds a bit tough but in the end you will gain invaluable knowledge about your phone along the way

I have to agree!
I was once a newb to WinMob (only about a month ago) and I hadn't a clue... I read, read and read and now I up updating roms, radios and installing apps like a good thing!
My own personal preference for a ROM is SwiftBL 5.6 - its super slick and includes loads of apps like GSen, Advanced Config, etc.... very nice app! You'll find it in the ROMs secion!
Enjor your phone!

right o
if you go to the official HTC site you will get a download to the newest official htc rom 1.93 i think which will improve the phone speed no end - it is also easy to install (follow instructions on site). just make sure you backup everything first!
trust me it turned my phone from unusable to a godsend! and its official rom
Thanks for the replies. I will attempt reading the wealth of info available on this site, but i'm swept off my feet with work at the moment. So any concise info from you guys will really help me to get my diamond running well ASAP during this busy time. I have however read the guides on how to install the ROM at least and will get stuck in properly when things calm down.
Would you say that the latest official HTC ROM is faster than swift 6.0?
Thanks again,
S.

But you cannot download from HTC if you have an operator supplied device.
Oh! Damn. Oh well, I guess it's gonna have to be Swift or another ROM then...
I'm new here and i first got the tilt, and i was talking to an ATT employer and he was telling me about the xda developers. so i check it out and so far its awesome but the problem is...I cant firgure out how to do this. so CAN anyone guide me step to step by doing the tilt personalization??? i would greatly appericated it and is it free?...
Hi and welcome.
This site is completely free as is all the ROMs and programs created (with the exception of a few unlockers).
It depends what type of personalisation your after...
Replacing the ATT ROM with a "Cooked" ROM?
-Read the wiki: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Kaiser for more information and the Sticky posts.
Installing new Applications?
-Just download them, copy to your device and install them.
Changing the theme?
-Each theme varies and has usually has dependecies on other software. All I can say is Read.
My best advice is to read other peoples guide's and other peoples common questions and things will fall into place.

Hey Guys,
First off, my immense gratitude for all your hard work! So much information and development, really make me appreciate the massive cost that went into the Xperia !
Before posting this thread, I did my research, read and saw as much as I could, before I posted any questions about Flashing. Thankfully, I have most of the answers, but have a few left. I am sorry if the answers to these questions already exist here, I tried to find them, but couldn't quite find the exact answer, so I apologize in advance for offending or upsetting anyone, I mean great respect to all of you . So, here are my questions:
1. Is it fair to assume that ROMs and Firmwire, could be used as synonyms? They are both essential system files, placed on the ROM portion of the device. I am asking this question, because I want to make sure I have all the pieces of information, in case, something goes wrong during Flashing my custom ROM. I want to have ALL the stock components that came with my Xperia, therefore, I need to understand if Firmware is different from stock ROMs, here. If so, what is the difference and where can I get the proper firmware?
2. Here is all the information I could download from my phone:
Software Id: 1213-6450
Software Version: R1AA017
Customization Version: R15A
Customization Variant: GENERIC_UK
Version:
ROM version: 1.02.931.3
ROM date: 08/29/08
Radio version: 1.06.25.29
Protocol version: 52.43.25.24U
Based on this info, can you guys help me locate this EXACT ROM, if someone has it on XDA? I would really appreciate it! I tried going through the stock ROM threads, but I cannot find the EXACT match. I also wanted a second pair of eyes, more experienced eyes to let me know what information is referring to what and if I have had EVERYTHING needed, before I flash to a custom ROM. If the exact version of the ROM from my phone is not available here, then I guess I'd have to back up my ROM, using the instructions from here. Can anyone confirm this? Also, please don't be surprised by how old this version must be, LOL, I got one of the earliest models and I never touched it .
3. In choosing a custom ROM, I have decided to go with the popular choice, that is Itje's Touch-IT v4.5 Landscape. If I understand this correctly, the Manila (TF3D) on this is ported from the BRAND NEW HTC devices, the Diamond 2 and Pro 2, which use Manila 2, as I understand it? If this is correct, then is it also safe to assume that Themes from Blackstone or something, will NOT run on this Manila 2? I also assume that TF3D Config would also be ineffective on this?
4. What application do you guys recommend for the most comprehensive back up of the Xperia, that is, Emails, Text Messages, Pictures, and so on, and once backed up, can they be restored to another Xperia or any other WM 6.1 Device, including the text messages?
I really want to thank everyone in advance for reading my questions and post, and would again like to apologize if I have offended anyone. It really was not my intention, and please understand there's a myriad of information here, LOL, so just cause most of you our Gurus, us mere Mortals may not always know where to dig it from . Thank you again for your patience, I look forward to your responses.
Regards,
ProFragger.
1) Yes. There's several kinds of Read Only Memory in your device that you can modify. 1st is the SPL, second is the Radio and third is the OS. "Images" for the latter two are referred to as ROMs.
2) Back it up if you want to be sure.
3) Most of your assumptions are correct. I cannot comment on wheter tf3dconfig will work or not.
4) PPCPimBackup (comes with Itje's ROM too)
Thank you very much Angelusz, for your response and help. I have learned, just from those few lines .
I guess I will go ahead and start backing up my stock ROM. If anyone can help me identify, if the ROM already exists online, based on the info I provided in my post earlier, then I would appreciate that too.
Thank you again guys.
FORGIVE ME, for i am a total NOOB. I just got my g1 in the other day, and i am completely excited about it. I saw my friends phone and he was telling me i should root my phone, and told me all the benefits of it. The only thing is he didnt show me how to do it! instead told me to come here, the g1 shrine and all of its lovers. Now i just want some basic info anyone can give me, like:
1. what happens when i wipe my phone?
2. what exactly are roms? and why are there so many of them! (as im surfing through the threads)
3. what exactly is SPL?
4. and any other information you think is critical for my knowledge about the g1
Again i appreciate any help i can get from you guys, i know this community is a nice and friendly one so im glad to be here! thanks again guyss
1) when you wipe your phone it removes all personal data, e.g. google sign ins, apps, settings, messeges, etc. you WONT lose your contacts.
2) a ROM is a firmware build, which is what the phone runs on. There are quite a few of them because some are designed for looks over performance wheras some are for performance over looks.
3/4) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523 - enjoy reading

Please read the stickies at the top of the forum page. This question belongs in the General Forum...not developer!!!
No I will not forgive you. Lol. I think its hilarious how many idiots we get posting in the developers forum asking questions like, What is a rom? Also, one of the mods needs to delete this thread pronto!

lol DP you are on a reported roll here tonight.
google and search is so easy use... i just don't get some (or most) people.
A little advice... before you start all of this, make sure it doesn't take control of you. Before you know it you'll have alerts waking you up at night telling you someone's new rom just was posted. It will take you over if you let it. lol
Moderation is key.
isn't this a repost anyway?
lol and you bought a Google phone with Google Search built in....
1. It wipes all data on your phone (apps and data, not your firmware)
2. ROM stands for Read Only Memory. Take it as your G1's operating system, like Vista or XP on a computer
3. SPL is pretty much the interface you will be using when flashing an image or using fastboot commands. Be careful when you flash an SPL though, it can potentially brick your phone
4. Just watch out when you flash the SPL, and remember to use Nandroid backups. Installing firmware and applications alone will NEVER brick your phone. Flashing your SPL incorrectly with a corrupted download can, remember to check the MD5 checksums.

I know the feeling of total noobness, let me tell you.. Especially if you coming here and reading all the threads for the first because it can be pretty overwhelming. Hopefully I can pass some of my knowledge on to you to kind of, ease your fears.
.:: Answers ::.
1.)If you wipe your phone, your restoring it to factory settings.
2.)ROMS are different versions of the OS that friendly developers such as Haykuro, JesusFreke and Cyanogen put together, to provide different functionalities or the same functionalities just more reliably or in a different way. (The only way you can use a different ROM is by having root access to your phone.)
3.)Secondary Program Loader, typically, a second stage bootloader. Not a term actually used by Qualcomm for msm7k has a more complex boot path involving both CPUs. Initial/secondary program loader is usually in reference to nand/onenand boot setups where you have a very small initial bootloader (1k to 16k typical), that is just enough to load a much larger secondary bootloader. Often there is something that runs first, in-rom, on-die (this is true of omap and msm chips for example) that is responsible for getting the IPL loaded.
4.)I would browse the Android FAQ to find other pieces to the much growing puzzle. I would definitely root your phone though (instructions here), and once your ready, setup your apps2sd (instructions here). If you want, I can help you do your apps2sd too, just hit me up on Gtalk if you want. As for ROMS, if you need help choosing, you can (go here) or if you want a suggestion, i would use Cyanogen's v3.4 ROM because it's an way modified version of JF'sv1.51 but allows you to use the Ext3 format for your apps2sd (which is good).
Hopefully this sheds more light for you, hit me up if you have any other questions.
I looked after many threads but couldnt it solved..Sorry if i missed any last forums..

YES they do solve the question and they are very old threads, you didn't miss them, you just didn't search for them, you could find them with the search function on this very site...
- I have an htc hd7 tmobile
* like me
- I think it is factory unlocked but not quite sure
* if you can use any SIM, then it's unlocked...
- I was roaming around this website and found about custom rom. I want some detail about it..what is it for..?What are the advantages and disadvantages of it? Is there any risk? If it gets damaged then i will not get any from my dad....can we get bt transfer from any custom rom..
* You clearly didn't read or use google about the topic, all the custom roms say what they do, also the concept is obvious to avoid questioning about what it is...
Official ROM, Custom ROM
what does this tells you?
Are the custom ROMs made by Microsoft, T-Mobile or AT&T?
What is Official ROM, can the Official ROM be made by anyone?
Does the custom ROMs thread mention something about BT transfers?
Does any thread mention this topic about WP7?
next time don't fear google.com
