HTC’s HD2 car kit has just become a lot less cool. Devicewire has given tracyandmatt.co.uk notice that the cradle will no longer have the old design that used a custom backplate, but a new but simpler design that attaches to the bottom microUSB port.
While the new design is now much less sexy, it is much more practical than the earlier version, as the backplate was quite thick. The price is still a high £61 however, which is no longer justified by the innovation and design in the old version, so I suspect this will no longer be a big seller.
The cradle is available for pre-order at DeviceWire here.

What a shame it turned from sexy to ugly! And still the same price.. pretty interesting
I m no longer interested in buying it ... I liked old one better... now i m going to use my old car kit i bought for tytn2... since there is nothing special this one ...
Seriously? What the F? I was planning to buy this expensive car holder with changeable back cover, and now they change it to cheap plastic version and still charging same amount of money as for good designed and innovated one? Get lost...
I'll probably write an email to HTC asking where can I get the old design one, because some units were sent to couple of people for testing and you can find photos of them on the internet
thats simply BOLLOCKS !
Me too. No longer interested in buying that but what should i do with my pre oder by amazon.de :-(

I might buy it... IF they drop the price now massively... I like how it's adjustable so you can angle it any way you want... is there any universal car holder out there that can be adjusted like that?
I got an Universal car holder for my HD2 yesterday. It's only 8.5 USD.
It can rotate 360 degrees, rotate in any angles you want. It's strong enough to hold the HD2. I will post some pics later

I guess the "old" nice looking design (really loved that one) was not stable enough. The device would've been held only by the battery cover. Imagine driving over a bump...no guarantee that your lovely HD2 flies around in your car :/

Now THAT is a bit a a design boo-boo! While I can cope with the somewhat fugly design for the sake of stability, in inability to run a 3.5mm aux lead to my stereo is a real pain in the nipsy. I do wish HTC had sorted out the official accessories to coincide with people actually having the product.

Spoke to someone at HTC - the main reason for the change is that this product will no longer specifically be for the HD2 - but more universal.

Hi - I seem to have knackered my mini-usb port a bit (probably by accidentally sticking my stylus in it).
I can get a replacement one on eBay, but it doesn't come with any instructions. Does anyone know where I could find instructions to fit it? Or is it something that would need a soldering iron (which I don't have) or something too tricky for a clumsy oaf like me?
Thanks
Dan
I'm pretty sure you're stuck with the soldering problem. Hopefully I'm wrong, I have a friend that needs to replace his.

Oh no! I'm not getting into that, but so far it's looking like it'll cost £50 to get it fixed if I send it off to somewhere. At that price I'd prefer to live with a bit of a dodgy connection...
Thankfully you can use bluetooth for most everything.
And a battery charging cradle if reqd

As well as an el-cheapo cradle with battery recharge bay IF the battery no longer recharges in the phone. If dancj was not proficient at soldering, he could get that part done by someone who is but given the 'clumsy oaf' statement perhaps it's best for any work on the phone to be done professionally. Bluetooth dongles are cheap if the PC usually sync'd with doesn't natively have bluetooth but it'd be worth dancj having a good read of the manual to determine how to set up the connection first if this is new ground - this particular clumsy oaf found it quite tricky figuring out which side the connection is initially configured and initiated from until reading the manual

As mentioned in my post above, a cradle with battery charging bay gets around that. They're very cheap too (Here are the details of what I have). If you add to that a Bluetooth dongle for about £15, you're still well on the right side of the £50 repair cost.
Sorry - I misunderstood.
I have a kind of workaround at the moment which is one of these 3 way adaptors.
The plug for this one is a bit different and grips the bit inside the USB socket and still gives a good connection. I could keep that in the car and then have one of those cradles at home and at work...

I've got something that looks like that as well. I guess if its plug connects well with your phone, there's no reason why you couldn't use it for mains charging as well, although I don't know if I'd trust a slightly damaged USB port to not deteriorate. Irrespective of what happens with the port, that cradle and spare battery could still be utilised.

i don't know if this is what Flying Kiwi is talking about, but you can also have one spare battery and a battery charger, and whenever one of the two batteries is depleted, replace it with the one that you charged with the battery charger, and so on. just keep that spare full one in your pocket.
Yeah that is an option. I really don't want to have to resort to physically changing my battery every day though.

Then you could get one of those big thick high capacity batteries with a matching 'swollen' battery cover and you'll only have to change it every second or third day. The downside is it doesn't look as good and it weighs more but it would still be cheaper than a £50 repair. Which is more important, saving a few quid or fixing it properly and having full functionality back?
If it comes down to that I think I'll swallow the £50 repair fee. At the moment I'm still torn between trying to get it repaired cheaper or living with a dodgy connection

I use my PSP stand with the HD2 in landscape mode. There are a couple of small notches on the stand which keep the HD2 from sliding out when touching the screen.

Having some oldies like the HD and the new HD2 this is a perfect solution.
Looks nice in my vitrine, all transparent. just what I needed.
Those DV cassetboxes had been gathering dust, and almost threw them away twice. You see, who keeps, has..
Brilliant idea been waiting for a long time for someone to come up with a slim easy to stow cradle. Will be useful on the next plane journey. Just ordered a few to share with friends as well.
jez
Even though the GoGoSTand is very cool I ended up using something a little bit more sturdy... a paper stand!! It's very sturdy and even though it doesn't fit inside your wallet it can be folded and put inside a pocket.
It's almost the same as the The $100 iPhone Stand ... I just modified the base a little bit.
Brgds... /TubGirl
I've got an HD2 and a GoGo stand. Landscape it's fine, portrait it works but it's not as stable as I'd like. To be fair the HD2 is a big chunk of phone and these things were designed primarily for iPhones.
They're dirt cheap and mine arrived from the US within days of ordering it so I'd buy one unless you're really into DIY.

Wow the gogo stand is just what I wanted, but I didn't fancy waiting for international shipping, so have made something similar with a cut out bit of cardboard. Took about 2mins to make and works fine for landscape mode, which is what I need for typing with anyway (using external keyboard). Also fits nicely in my wallet.
I just pre-ordered the HTC extended battery for the HD2 off play.com, yes it makes the phone a bit bulky (not much more than my old W810i though), and it comes with a stand that pops out the back. Nothing extra to carry around!
my969: big thanks

I tend to agree that Dell's dock price is a little nuts, or at least the solution is a little overboard if all you want to do is charge the phone on a nightstand in a way where you can see the screen.
I'll post more details on what I am doing with this later, but this thread seemed like a nice thread to at least post a pic of my contraption, especially considering there's already a token reference to an Apple product.
I had an iPad dock lying around the house that I have NEVER used because my iPad is always in a case. Before anyone makes any Apple jokes, I'm an Android guy through and through now, but the iPad was a gift, and it actually does do a nice job for light internet browsing. Great for the commode, LOL.
Anyway, I had some fun last night with the iPad dock, a dremel, some JB weld, a can of spray paint and, of course, a Streak USB cable. It's pretty rough. The connector moved a little on me before it dried all the way, but it still works perfectly, and the phone isn't crooked as a result. I could make it much cleaner looking on a second try, but whatever, it does the job.
More on how I made it an automated night time solution later, but here are a couple of pics:

LOL. It's all good. Cost me no money, and evening of messing around, and one more reason for the wife not to understand me.

Looks nice Spleisher glad you could accomplish it, love those home projects.
To the Original poster, I really like the motorola looking dock aesthetically even more than the Dell dock, doubt they'd make one that sexy but I hope to get the dell branded dock for the holidays.
There's some portable radio / internet radio thingy on sale in the U.S. that also uses a pdmi connector (and has a dock) I can't remember the name of it though.
Spleisher - I love it. Great work!!!
Thanks. It was fun. I could make it much more clean if I had it to do over again, but it works perfectly, so it's cool. The best part about it is the tasker profile for automatically turning it into a clock at night.

That's pretty cool! I actually cruised over here to see if anyone made their own dock recently.
finally
Finally got around to taking a picture of the dock with the phone in it. The display is the "night display" from Gentle Alarm. In the background, you can even see part of the landline and the alarm clock made not necessary by the phone in the dock.
wow over 1600 views
I just looked at this thread and realized over 1,600 people have looked at my dock. Wow. I have been using it for several months as an alarm clock in the dock every night and so far no heat issues. It has been working out very well. After seeing how many people were interested in a dock I think I should have offered to make and sell them. I still could, but I imagine the market for a new dock for this old phone is dwindling.
I would buy one. Red androids please.

Ok, if you want one I can make one. I wouldn't expect to be making very many of these so each one could be customized. That one was made in pine which I stained with a pecan stain. I have since come across some walnut boards. I could make one in walnut which would look much better than pine. If you want some other type of wood I can see about getting some. I used a micro to standard USB cable which allows me to either plug it into the computer or into the standard dinc AC adapter. I can also change the design with more or less androids, your name or some completely different design, even a square or sculpted top rather than a round one.
If something in the neighborhood of 50 bucks is in your price range let me know along with any specifics of the design you want.
And, of course, for everyone elses' enjoyment I can post a picture here when it is done.
How do you have your usb plug secured in there? I've been trying to come up with a design for one of my own since I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but I've not come up with a good way to get the plug to stay in place so that the phone can be plugged in easily.

I placed the phone in the holder then I plugged the usb connector into it through the other hole I had cut for it. Then I put some gorilla glue around the plastic part of the plug being careful to keep it away from the end. Gorilla glue expands and fills the space around the plug. I lightly clamped the phone in place overnight, but a couple hours should be enough, and then when I removed the clamp, the plug is secured in place exactly where it needs to be.
Cool idea, looks great!

LOL it kinda looks like monument on Droid cemetery. RIP DInc
Great job regardless, a lot of attention to details. But picture is epic fail - get another phone/camera and take a picture with phone in.
