it's good practice to have the images set to the resolution of the screen. just saying because you don't mention it in the OP and i would imagine that some people would freak out about it

this is my first ever splash make or XDA thread ever lol ima learnin =)

Take this as you please:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467693

Hey guys, just saw this thread almost immediately after using another thread in Sapphire Dev to do exactly this! (Change the boot splash)
The thread I'm talkin' about is here: www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517333&page=2
It's on page two because this is actually where someone posted a boot splash that's fairly close to the right resolution for a HTC Magic (or MyTouch3G) as well as the exact same instructions as above. Actual resolution for both phones is 320 x 480 with 65K colors.
I can attest to the fact that this method works perfectly on my phone (HTC Magic with the info in my sig). That big ol' Android is far sexier than the MyTouch boot screen.

(sorry, new users can't post URLs): forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517333&page=
just get 12 post, that'll fix the link problem!!!

How to create a boot animation?

Hi, guys, I've got a lil' question: how can i create a boot animation?
thank you very much!
have a look at some of the roms out here (mcr or stock), in /system/media/bootscreen are all the files that are involved with a bootscreen. it's not that hard, if you have specific questions come back.
tip: you need to create an animated gif.
haha i wanna do this now... do i have to have the unlocked spl?
edit*
im so awsome lol i clicked twice by accident and waited a bit and decided that the first one must be done so i clicked stop.. no double post!

the only benefit we have from the unlocked spl is the possibility to alter the splash screen (the first image to appear when you power on the hero), which appears before the bootscreen. the bootscreen itself is part of the rom, so you need either a rooted phone or a custom recovery image (or both, usually goes hand in hand).

Want custom roms for Tattoo?

Im currently a HTC Hero developer and my recent work is Hero 2.0 ROM
And I see that Tattoo hasnt much going on, so I thought why not help you guys out a little.
Things I need to do so:
- Testers with some kind of android experience and that are willing to test stuff.
MOD EDIT - To request money for a new device so you can make roms is a no no on XDA. Donations towards work already done is ok, but for work still yet to be done, this not permitted
OP EDIT: I understand that, came out the wrong way
What I've planned:
- Root
- Custom recovery
- Custom rom
Regards,
b
Yes please
behnaam that would be great!
unfortunately i'm very new to android and the htc tattoo is my first smartphone ever. but i'm willing to donate if your thread gets more feedback.
Need somebody to test the recovery.img, if we have that running its a good starting point.
PM me if interested to help!
I would love to see this work, and i'd gladly help you out it the phone were mine. However the Tattoo that i posses is actually my fathers and there is nothing i can do about it...
If it was the magic we're talking about id gladly put my hand into fire
Would be great.
Wating.
Thanks in Advance.
I'm also new to Android.
It's very good to seem some talented devs interested in the Tattoo.
It's a great little budget android phone that needs some attention
Behnaam, I'm very limited in time during the weekdays but if you need someone help testing some roms, feel free to PM me.
Good luck!
PS - How are you planning to bypass the bootloader security checks ? I'm under the impression that on Android 1.6 the boot images have to be signed, so that they will be accepted by the bootloader ?

Dont tattoo bootloader allow booting into a boot.img? Since I remember we had the same issue with Hero, that the bootloader didnt allow flashing boot imgs, but it allowed booting them up, so the workaround was to boot into a custom recovery img with adb root permissions and from there flash the new recovery.
Give us the instructions, we will try it and let you know.
if you give the instructions i will test also..
I like to help too... the tattoo scene is so dead.

I took a very fast look at this, when I noticed the Superboot method for the N1.
What I found it that "fastboot oem boot" will boot the phone but I couldn't find a way to pass a custom boot image. IIRC, adb commands were not responsive, and you could only use fastboot by prefixing the commands with "oem". But then again, this was a very very fast look at all of this, since I'm a total Android newbie (but with a firm grasp of Linux ).
So, your idea is to create a custom recovery image that will enable full ADB commands ?
Why not go through the Superboot way ? Compile an image with a kernel for the Tattoo, that once booted copies a chmodded su to the Tattoo filesystem ? This is what I was thinking about, until I read that the Superboot only worked on "Holiday" N1's and that the other had to be unlocked, using "fastboot oem unlock". Once again, let me stress that I'm preety new to this, so I may be missing something. Don't let me put you down
awesome
I would be more than happy to test as well. I agree with the fact that the tattoo scene is pretty much dead. Not as many apps, no way to root, and no way to update to 2.1
Send me stuff and ill test it! thanks a bunch
I stand corrected.
We can, at least, upload and start the boot of a boot image.
I ran:
Code:
adb shell reboot oem-72
fastboot boot superboot.img
And I got
Code:
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY!
booting...
Obviously, it hangs there (superboot has a kernel for N1), but I now believe that if we have a valid Tattoo boot image, maybe we can boot it and run a superuser-like rooting technique.
I have no time to investigate how to compile a kernel, prepare a ramdisk and convert them into a bootable image, but for someone more used to the Android OS, this should be a good path to try.
You have my support. I'm a newbie to the Tattoo hacking scene, but once I get mine, I'll be sure to help out.
As soon as we can root and make our own ROMs, well, we'll have some fun
Ok guys thnks for info, now I know that the oem method works.
Gonna make a superboot for Tattoo for testing, posting it here today, try it and tell me (when I posted it)

[REQUEST] Custom SPL?

I want to know if it's possible to make a custom SPL that lets us flash splash screens (what comes before your rom's bootscreen) among other things.
Thanks,

Well regarding the Splash screen, you can actually do that yourself right now without a new SPL.

You followed THIS?
You'll have to rip open the ramdisk, but the script esigned for extracting the ramdisk is different than ours, you'll have to use split boot.img and do the hex-editing yourself.
Anyways, I'll go mess with it a little bit since I'm finally done with classes for the summer. (THANK GOD)

Ahhh, lucky. I have finals week next week.
Got deep into this myself, created custom .rle files dropped them in the init.rc, I still get the stock 2.1 RUU green letters on white initial splash screen.
I got brave and tried a guide I saw for the G1 to flash the splash screen from fastboot, i get this
# fastboot flash splash1 /android/tools/mysplash.rgb565
sending 'splash1' (300 KB)... FAILED (remote: not allow)
I would love to be able to get it to work by playing around with the ramdisk, that way I could be made flashable, however I would settle for being able to change it from fastboot if we could get it to work.
to create the .rle is renamed mysplash.rgb565 to initlogo.rle and logo.rle. Not sure if this will work.

Red Trackball "of death" - need some instructions

I followed this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726258 and run into serious problems that i can't seem to fix.
To be exact I am refearing to a user in that thread that mentioned he has a black screen, since version 0.33 of bootloader doesn't work for "lcd" (?)
However, since I had the same problem i followed his suggestion to use PASSIMG_Passion_KT_KR_2.15.1010.2_FRF91_release_si gned.zip from shipped-roms to get stuff working again. And it did - except the side effect that since then i have a red trackball as soon as the phone finished booting up.
I've tried all, followed the exact instruction for back to stock, formated sdcard, didn't succeed either, so now I'm stucked with this battery draining red light and researches on google gave a lot of hints in terms of moisture or overheat, no solution though.
Any help is highly appreciated.
I think the issue is in the misc partition, something might not be right there...
You currently have the misc img of a desire on your N1...
Maybe you could try to flash a default N1 misc image and PASSIMG of a non korean N1 that matches your current hboot?

I did use the original stock image provided by modaco, unzipped it and fastbooted all the images like system, recover and so on.
Now my current boot is:
NEXUSONE PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.35.0017
MICROP-0b15
RADIO-4.06.00.12_7
jUN 14 2010, 12:02:27
So could it be that there's a conflict in a "protected area" that can't be solved, except by the approach you suggested?
You did follow the thread in your first post and flashed the Desire misc image (mtd0.img), right? I would try to :
1. unlock your bootloader so S=OFF (fastboot oem unlock)
2. get hold of an N1 mtd0.img dump with S=OFF and flash it

Just to confirm, there is no personal info in the misc partition right?
I looked into my dump with an hex editor. The only readable part is something like "Google" and the stock firmware version number. Don't think that there's anything personal

In order to flash this try the "flash_image" command.

Fix For Dinc BootLoop with no recovery from NVRam Update

I finally successfully recovered my BootLooped Incredible after i incorrectly updated the NV item of my phone. My situation was a little different than most bootloop error because no matter which stock rom or recovery image I flash nothing would stop it from rebooting because the NV items weren't overwritten during the flash. Then I came across a solution for the EVO by cutthroatamft on how he recovered his EVO from the same Mistake but unfortunately all his files were geared toward the EVO. After much searching I accidentally came across a single comment that posted a link for the ENG-HBOOT for the incredible. Now i manage to replace all the EVO specific files with the Dinc equivalent. Below is the link to the files and instructions compile by cutthroatamft but I updated it for the Dinc. Hopefully this helps someone else that has this problem. can't post a live link but I think you can figure it out
update:
Since megaupload is down and Had some people asking for a re-up here's a mediafire link to the file
http://www.mediafire.com/?cu7hu6pu75zvskh
Also as mentioned below by eljean this should work on the SLCD as well it's just your screen will be blank during the process. For those who has this Dinc I found that if the screen is blank wait a few minutes for it to fully boot then test to see if you can execute any ADB command. If you can the just type "adb reboot oem-78" this will reboot it and put it in fastboot mode which will allow you to execute the commands in the document.
update 2:
Nevermind what I said about the ADB... this worked for me on another phone but I realize you'll probably won't get to a point where you can execute the command because your phone in a loop LOL. So I guess getting to fastboot blind folded is your only option

The engineering HBOOT can be quite useful for many things besides flashing/erasing certain partitions. The inc community just hasn't used it that much.
