Or Does metamorph do these edits (black status bar, battery) in eclair?...im still old school still into update zips/signing
take out the framework-res.apk/res/drawable and framework-res.apk/res/drawable-mdpi folders. There are like 3 or 4 images in the drawable folder. The rest of your images are in the drawable-mdpi folder. You will have to go through and look at certain images for the status bar and such because 2.0+ adds some new .9.png's where it used to be just a .png. statusbar_background.png becomes statusbar_background.9.png for example. just add the .9 to it and you should be good if your image isn't very "complex" looking.
some of the other ones that become .9.png's that i can recall off the top of my head are the title_bar images.
Appreciate that....
Was looking in the wrong drawables
Problem solved!

I'm trying to replace the 3g and reception bars icons in the taskbar but I can't seem to locate the .pngs in framework-res.apk. I thought they were in the drawable-hdpi-v4 folder but no dice. Can someone point me to where they are? I can change them myself once I find them. If anyone's interested, it's a VaelPak 2.3 framework-res with MattedBlues icons replacing most of those in the framework-res, I'll upload it when done. Thanks.
Look in drawable-mdpi, the names should be something like stat_sys_data

The taskbar icons are in the drawable-hdpi-v4 on my ROM, which I'm pretty sure is the same as the mdpi folder. I saw the 3G icons (not the reception bar ones) but when I replaced them then pushed the new framework-res, they don't change. I'm using ClockWorkMod Recovery so I can mount the system partition and push the file but it has an issue with clearing dalvik. Could this be the problem? Also, do I have to replace the Gmail icon in the gmail.apk? That is still the old style also. Thanks for the help.
I found what I was looking for: the icons are in the com.htc.resources.apk in /system/res folder. Switched 'em out, all good. The taskbar isn't finished 'cause I gotta get into some individual app .apk but when I'm finished doing that and probably making a whole theme, I'm gonna post it on VaelPak forum: http://vaelek.com/. Thanks.
Big question. When you rotate the phone, the status bar background (in themes like Darkness, with a design) gets messed up because it's shaped for our screen and not a small piece that gets tiled like the original. Can you make a landscape version of the background? I noticed in TouchWiz30Launcher.apk there is a homescreen_icon_bg.png and homescreen_icon_bg_h.png the latter being for a horizontal orientation of the launcher. Can we apply this concept to a custom made portrait AND landscape drawer background in twframework-res.apk? I would really like to know if it is possible, but am not asking for the creation of the background. I can make my own, but I need to know how to make it work.
I think you have to create a layout-land and layout-port folder and put something in there. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
A simpler idea might be to modify status_bar_expanded.xml to have multiple images for the background and bottom bar, like 3 where the center is fixed and the outer 2 are tiled matched up to look seamless of course. Or just allow certain parts to be stretched and some not with draw9patch.

Thanks a lot for your post, I looked into status_bar_expanded but couldn't find anything applicable. Looked at status_bar.xml and it contains all the info on status_bar_background in the vertical position. How would you put it all into horizontal? Would you have to edit the existing xml or make a new one in layout-land? Could I just copy it into layout-land and edit in some new filenames and stuff?
EDIT: You know how to signify a file it says @drawable/statusbar_background? Does this actually refer to status_bar_background.9.png? And how would you signify a drawlable-land destination? @drawable-land/statusbar_background?
That's mostly what I don't understand yet. In framework-res there are 3 folders:
layout
layout-land
layout-port
icon_menu_layout.xml is in land and port and not in just layout. I think because layout is default for both, and land or port is used for those modes if the file doesn't exist in layout. Just like an xml in drawable can replace an image if the same name is used. But I think there's more to it than that. I tried creating a layout-land and layout-port and moved status_bar_expanded.xml to both and it looked normal both ways. I would think that layout-land would automatically use the drawable-land images too. Something else is missing.
EDIT: Oh yes @drawable/statusbar_background is the png in drawable-hdpi, unless there's actually a drawable/statusbar_background.xml which would make it use that instead. I just don't know where drawable-land-hdpi fits in.
Inside the XML there is a "vertical" and "horizontal" section, you'd have to change that too. I have changed it and will try it tonight in my framework. I just don't understand the references it makes too well...
I've been trying to find a simple reference, but I guess most of it's here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/layout-objects.html
Or around that area of the docs. The vertical/horizontal I think is the alignment of objects in a group. I don't think it has to do with land/port.
This looks interesting too. I just found it. It looks like a way to view layouts on the computer.

I honestly don't know what that stuff means with a headache, so I can't understand what the links refer to, sorry
It's all really disorganized or I'm just used to Microsoft docs. The xml corelates with the android classes for coding java. So xml is used sort of like html tables where everything is nested so you can have rows or collumns of buttons (horiz/vert) or menus or whatever, but the elements used are all the members of the android class. It's just so hard to find the meaning of each one.

Hi all,
I'm new to themes and am trying to figure out where the various 4G connection icons are located so I can change them from green to white.
Running the GreybreadX theme, which is great, but the 4G icon is still green.
I was able to locate the 3-bar and disconnected icons within framework-res.apk but not sure where to look for the 2-bar and 1-bar icons.
Any suggestions on where to check?
You should find them in /system/app/SystemUI.apk
inside there: SystemUI.apk/res/drawable-hdpi/
Then look for pngs beginning with stat_sys_data_wimax
..all sorts of notification bar (etc) goodies in there. If you're decompiling and/or modding xml/smali though, I'd read up on it first within these forums.
Ok so I finally got around to editing the 4G icons to be white/grey instead of green/grey, removed the originals from SystemUI.apk and placed mine in there, and placed the edited SystemUI.apk in /system/app/ (made backups of everything).
Rebooted and I still have green/grey 4G icons... what am I missing here?
Edited png files attached.
I don't have it in front of me, but check the framework-res.apk in the drawable hdpi folder. There are a couple sets of 4G icons- once its activated, and then to display your signal.
Also, btw, i usually just drag the edited icons over into the apk (in 7zip) and make sure it asks to replace the files... just to make sure the file names are the same.
. . NS4G . . CM7 . .
Ended up going back to the stock systemui.apk and using Ninjamorph to overwrite the original images. Worked perfectly!

The images are a .9 type. That means there is a black border around the images which you can't mess with. You need to get the original pictures, and do it again, but without touching the borders. So in gimp, that means you should use colorize, or colorfy.

Didn't quite understand that, can anyone do it for me?
I added the SystemUI file and the statusbar file.
Thanks

I have also wondered about this. If I changed one of those statusbars in a theme that was a .9 png to a standard screen width statusbar image, and renamed the png to statusbar_background.png in the drawable folder and in the XML, would that work? Or would I need to make other changes?

So someone can do it for me ?
Didnt work will try again

No, I'm 99% sure that won't work. I say that because I've modified images and in renaming, I accidentally deleted the ".9" leaving just ".png". My tweaked image did not show up and instead, it still displayed the stock.9.png.
I'm gonna assume that you know how to modify .9's correctly. If not, here is a new tutorial I just saw without even searching. There are several others out there both here and on you tube. I could help as well if need be.
As long as you know how to modify and recompile .9.png's, here is a nice little shortcut for modding any system apk as the OP originally inquired about. Start by decompiling your apk. Modify whatever .9's you want and use one of the MANY tools (one is linked in the tutorial above) to recompile each individual .9.png. Once all of your .9.png's are recompiled, open the COMPILED apk you are modding using 7zip as someone mentioned above. (Left click, go to 7zip, open archive) Then navigate to res/drawable-hdpi/ and just drag your new, modified images in to the folder overwriting the old ones. Close the 7zip window and you are all done. Pretty simple. MAKE A BACK UP (just in case) and then adb push it to your system folder or use root explorer to copy and paste it.
I'd love to go into more detail, but I gotta run. I hope this helps a little. Trust me, I am no computer guy. A year ago, I didn't even know what "root" meant. I've learned everything from reading these forums and having some questions answered by other helpful users. Good luck

I usually just change the Status Bar backdrop in the Mdpi folder, then sign it.

Problem is, some statusbars can't use a .9, as they aren't a solid color the whole way through. Excellent writeup by the guy a couple posts above me by the way. But I just wonder what the best way to change the statusbar background from a .9 to a full 320xWhatever (for mdpi) png is. Can it be done? Am I being clear? Because sometimes I don't make much sense

I certainly can't speak for every rom or every phone, (and maybe this isn't exactly what you are referring to) but this is an old statusbar I made for a MIUI theme that worked just fine as a .9. If turned horizontal, the middle stayed the same size and both of the solid colored sides would stretch. Actually, the sides are a black to grey gradient.
Try this....
Draw9patch is the tool used for creating .9 images, it is included in the android sdk.
1 .Navigate to the tools folder at the dos prompt and type Draw9patch.
2 .Drag and drop the image to be edited into the window that opens up when you hit return.
3. Press press shift and select one pixel at two corners of the image (diagonally opposite)
Then simply save 9 patch image from file menu.
Make sure you name it as-- yourfilename.9.png
It works for me anyway

So with this tool, you can take a full blown statusbar, say the one a few posts above, or one with gradients and such, and make it into a .9? I wish I'd known about that earlier!

If u use ninja morph it will work
So I am editing a go launcher template theme and i saw there were some parts i wanted to change that wasn't included in the template...for example the little icons ontop of the apps when you want to delete (kill.png kill_light.png etc...) I added this code
<AppIcon text_color="#FFFFFFFF" text_bg_color="#ff3f3f3f" delete_app="kill" delete_app_highlight="kill_light" new_app_icon="new_install_app"
update_icon="appfunc_app_update" locker_icon="promanage_lock_icon" close_app_icon="promanage_close_normal" close_app_light="promanage_close_light"/>
with png's with the right names in the drawable hdpi folder but they don't show up when i test it out...am i missing something? I was able change the media management icons in the app drawer by adding this
<SwitchButtonBean button_galleryicon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_gallery" button_gallerylighticon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_gallery_light"
button_musicicon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_music" button_musiclighticon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_music_light"
button_videoicon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_video" button_videolighticon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_video_light"
button_appicon="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_app" button_appiconlight="appfunc_mediamanagement_switch_button_app_light"/>
but it didn't work for the other part (the smaller versions of those same icons in the media management menu)
what am i missing??
oh and i added the code to app_func_theme.xml if you were wondering
anyone?
okay so im inching closer to the solution....im guessing i have to edit the drawable in the r.java? Is this possible because i read somewhere everything in the gen folder is generated and not to edit it..but its the only place i can find that explains why the media management code i added work and the small icon code (kill, kill_light) didnt....i can see the icon references java file...if i do edit this java file or the public.xml (it appears to be linked to this part of the r.java file) where do i get this 10 digit code to put after the equal sign.
