I have searched but can't find anything on this. I am using a tilt and running google maps and live search. I am wanting to be able to collect waypoints within either of these two apps. Does anybody know if this is possible and if so could you provide the process.
Thanks.
CoPilot Now on the Market
Hey guys
CoPilot is now on the Market.
Single map £25.99 and Europe £59.99.
Any opinions yet?
Expensive....but for what it provides, is worth it.
way too expensive :S
so far looks good. i dont think its too expensive for what you get. i think $35 US isnt cheap, but fair for what you get. i havent dug too deep into it yet (still drinking coffee :^) but at first glance it appears to store maps locally and i think even routing is done locally on device. and best of all i can fully understand the voice (ie no robot with an accent)
will test further later today
i did have one helluva time trying to figure out how/where to download copilot central so i could download maps to pc.
http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/android/
also took some time trying to get copilot central to recognize my copilot account. seems the sd card must be mounted to pc. looks like thats how it reads the sw version
so far i think this will be replacing andnav2 and 1 click directions for me.
Here is some info
http://www.alk.com/copilot/copilot-maps.asp
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.alk.copilot.marketplace.na.full
http://phandroid.com/2009/01/14/alk-copilot-gps-software-on-androidg1/
Its got cheaper on the market!
One region £22.60
Europe £52.17
UK Maps
Three questions...
1) Does the app come with US maps or do you get to choose which map once purchased?
2) Can it download maps on the fly (e.g. if you don't have the maps purchased for your current location)?
3) How much are extra maps?
Is it just my eyes or is it no longer on the market?
It apprears to be off the market already. I bought it before it got pulled but am having problems downloading the map (first time seems to have failed at 96%, trying again).
can't seem to find any info as to whether it will be available in Australia. We have normal copillot of course... and website doesnt even mention Android...
They do not list maps for Oceania as available right now. Just Europe and North America.
Locations listed but not available (yet) are Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America.

do u have a link for this ?
Not exactly. Copilot live, which is what is used to download maps is not available anymore either.
http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/central/
is where you would download if available. Information in general is available from the link posted earlier.

Slow download of maps, fifth time!
It's irritating trying to get maps!
I found on my computer, downloading to:
c:\Program Files\ALK Technologies\CoPilot Central 2.0\MAP_ALK.NA-NorthAmerica-4.2009.01_3.11.2.1
I'm gonna try and copy that directly to the sd card.
If it doesn't work this time, I'm canceling it.

It seems to fail at the 1GB mark (out of 1.07) every time. I have tried 4 times now, I thought it was my flaky home connection at first. I then tried direct to my phone but it reboots before completion.
I am going to keep it though, ALK obviously have a product, they just need to straighten out map delivery. This way once the problems have been resolved I should be good to go. I might send a note to support though and see if there is an alternate way of downloading the maps. I am not happy about this, but am willing to be patient.
Copilot is back on the market in the US at least. The 32 bit version of Copilot central is available for download as well of their website.
I still have not successfully downloaded maps but I will try again this morning since the app is back in the market.

Just download the USA map using Copilot Central. Wouldnt install to the android, so I copied the file to the sdcard in the copilot/save directory. as soon as I ran copilot on the android it unpacked the map and made it available.
here's what i had to do to get everything working.....
took all day to get maps downloaded because the download kept crapping out for some reason.....but eventually the US map dowloaded.
file name of the 1GB file i downloaded is MAP_ALK.NA-NorthAmerica-4.2009.01_3.11.2.1.pds which was located in the copilot directory of my pc.
now even though i had the file, copilot central wouldnt recognize that i had a map on my pc. at this point i just tried to copy the map directly to the copilot directory on the sdcard but that didnt work.
i tried downloading the same map from the copilot app on the g1 just to see what the directory structure would be. it was downloading the same file to /sdcard/copilot/save
i went ahead a copied the map from my pc to that directory and upon starting the app it began to unpackage the file. i went into setting and selected the NA region and everything seems to be working well
then i just fired up copilot central, mounted my sdcard, and made a backup of the maps
all in all a huge pain....but i think this app is exactly what i have been waiting for regarding android navigation.
my only remaining wish list item for navigation would be to integrate this with google search (similiar to google maps)
anyway, hope this helps....
My heroes!
metil1971 & aagvain
I too, moved the file from the folder I downloaded it to. I must have downloaded 6 times. That was frustrating!
Unpacking as I type.
Thanks again!
edit: Huh?!? Still told me no maps, even though CoPilot Central sees it. Backing up.
Once unpacked I had to select data region from settings. To even see the option for data region I had to select "see more settings." This has definitely been a trial for me so far.
I now have maps and can create routes etc... interestingly enough when mode is set to driving the maps do not move right now. When set to walking it handles just fine. I have not tried the other modes yet.
Hi All,
I was searching for an app that will show the GPS position of my phone realtime in Google earth. I found Ipoki (www.ipoki.com). It's a great app for tracking phones in google earth and google maps in realtime.
However.. The app keeps crashing on my phone on random intervalls. Anyone of you using this app and do you experience the same problems?
Does anyone know a replacement for this app (just in case i can't solve the crashes). It is important that the location can me viewed in Google Earth. I tried latitude, but the update frequency isn't very reliable.
Thanks in advance.
Isn't this the same as Latitude from google maps??
---EDIT---
sorry didn't read good.
Currently there doesn't seem to be any easy reliable way to track an Android device via Google Earth (apart from Ipoki which seems to have trouble on the Hero). Presumably you mean using Google Earth on a PC and creating a network link to a kml file?
The only apps that come close are Instamapper and Glympse, which offer live tracking via a map on a webpage.
I used to use http://www.mgmaps.com/ on Symbian devices; you can configure a auto-updated kml file which sits on a server and you can point to from GE for live tracking. This works really well, but the app doesn't work on Android yet (though apparently it DOES work with the custom ROMs since they support Java). Keep an eye on this as I think it will work well with the new ROM, and I believe the developer is working on porting it to Android.
It looks promising and i am running the customrom from modaco. However can you point me in the right direction? I downloaden the generic app from the site and put it on my sd card. However, the javabox doesn't show the file, so i can't open it.
Check the forums on mgpaps.com, there are users there successfully running it on the Hero.
Is there a way to make maps or navigation pre-load the maps so when I lose connectivity it will still work?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
No.
Sorry.
I'm sure you could buy some third party nav software that allows you to download and store maps, co-pilot maybe?
Co-Pilot, if you have time to DL the maps and what not. And if it is worth $30 to you. Other 3rd party apps may, but not for that cheap. And I don't think Co-Pilot is working on Froyo yet.
you can pre-load one route to work when you lose connection but you won't be able to load a second one once the connection is gone
Thats what I figured. Anyway, thanks for the quick replys guys.
Would be a cool feature if they could add it...I'm sure this happens to a lot of people on long roadtrips where they lose signal.
Maverick can load maps for offline use; but no real navigation though.
Try AndNav2
Since copilot is dead on froyo... Try motonav, I've not tested it on froyo.
I remember google saying they intended to work on making google maps available offline so maybe thatll happen. Navigation is really important when you are in the middle of nowhere trying to get someplace, its essential in my opinion so im kinda surprised it wasnt introduced offline when navigation came out.
The brut version of maps gives you an "cache to sd card" option, but i never tried it. Anybody tried it?
Check out "Maps (-)" by coderminus and "MapDroyd." Both are offline mapping apps. I'm not sure if they'll do navigation, but if you can search for a place and show it on the map while offline, you can navigate yourself. I have them and have been meaning to try them out but haven't have the time or need.
I you're going camping in the middle of nowhere and need offline maps I would use Maverick and set it on Google Terrain map.
You can load all the tiles you need over wifi or use a program like Mobile Atlas Creator to download the tiles for you and copy them to your SD-card.
I assume you're not going to need turn by turn navigation?
When I first began my researches for new smartphone, I think I read MS2 came with a Motonav Demo. I've just got mine but cant find it. Can't find on Android Market either and Motorola Shop don't even show any app (is there something wrong or they haven't launched it on Brazil yet?)
I saw some posts in other forums showing the path (containing a download link) to install it but not sure if I can trust and if it will work on froyo. Anybody?
MotoNav was included in Milestone 1. Milestone 2 has google navigation by default.

Understand. The big difference is that Google Navigation doesn't have offline maps. Or is there anyway to get offlines maps for it?
Sent from my A953 using XDA App
Yes, google nav is far from perfect I'm not sure if motonav is available for standalone purchase, but there are few others offline nav apps for android. ATM I can remember copilot and navigon. Copilot looks and works nice, but I've heared people complaining about maps being a bit outdated and not precise in some areas. At least in Poland, other countries may have better support. I can't say anything useful about navigon: I looked it up and I didn't like it's interface and graphics, so I've chosen copilot.
Find out that Google Maps 5.0 can work offline using its cache. Just need to navigate trough the map within certain zoom while you still have a connection (such as Wifi).
Some other interesting improvents, too.

for offline navigation try use IGO, is a good gps navigator
you can find it at 'black market' or buy it on IGO SHOP for android
i recomend
Google's navigation caches routes before you take them (in the previous version there was a setting to allow it to do this on 3G, but I'm not sure if it's still there). It also stashes away all the stuff it's downloaded before in case you need to go there again. It uses vector graphics rather than tile based stuff too, which means you get a certain amount of available zoom without downloading any more data...works pretty well.
That said, if you need completely offline navigation, there are several programs from GPS vendors available...
I recommend google maps 5
does google maps 5 has been released?
I just downloaded "google map 5" apk but I'm not sure about it cuz the feature is not like whats described in the video.
In google maps 5 it's true that I can tilting and rotating with finger control, the maps loading time also fast but in my "google maps 5" the zoom level is not as big as in the video and there's no 3D building (I searched bryant park in google maps 5, I found it, but it was totally different with what it is look like between in my MS2 and the video trailer)
my question is: do I downloaded the right apk?

your motorola should come standard with google maps 5. however, if it doesnt, you can get it from the marketplace for free. there is however a new version of google maps, which is 5.3. according to the post, it should be available from the market place. however if you cant locate it, there are links to download the apk and then install it.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-maps-5-3-for-android-available-now/
since its new, i suggest you read the comments before downloading it.

nice info
I've downloaded it and it's still the same.
I still can't see 3d building (in new york) and the zoom level of map terrain cannot reach the level I want.
I'm curious about why I cannot find this apps in android market..
is it because google maps 5 still in beta version or what?
at least, the satelite view is great

if you do have the latest version, im not quite sure why you cant see buildings in 3D. i dont seem to have a problem seeing buildings in 3d in new york.
however about you not being to search for google maps on the market place, i had the exact same problem. apparently the reason behind it is because google does not distribute applications in Malaysia and Indonesia and many other countries. therefore, the only other way to work around it will be to root your phone in order to obtain google maps and other such software. as soon as i locate the relevant link ill edit this post with it.
EDIT: here is the post i was looking for. its a similar question i asked some time back and this is the answer i got:
I also from M'sia, but i able to update it by doing some tricks.
U can't update directly if u are from Malaysia because currently M'sia still not in the Market List that fully distributing all applications. This link will provide you with that list:
http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138294
Solution: Go to Market & try to search "MarketEnabler" and u will know the trick.
U will be surprised by then.
Sorry, there is one more condition: Ur phone need to be Rooted!!

Thank God I've rooted my phone several days before.
so I installed market enabler and choose to fake my network as verizon.
and it's like magic..I searched "map" in android market then from out of nowhere suddenly google maps showed up at the first row (that's amazing)
then I choose google map and it says "open" rather than "update". It indicates that my maps is in the same version (5.3) with the one in android market.
Then I decide to uninstall update and reinstall it from android market.
It's work, now I can see 3D building on my maps (I like the moment when the buildings growing up from the ground, it's cool)
thank you agent008my now my maps become more colorful
