Hi, I am currently working on aHome themes and clocks. I got that down but I would like to have the ability to have more than one clock with a theme. Any ideas anybody on how to implement that?
I'm kinda reintroducing myself to Java, its been sometime since I last used it.
Adding more than one clock would require some major edits to the source code in AlarmClock.apk. What would be easier is creating a directory in the sdcard that holds multiple clock files, then incorporating a script in your ROM that will switch out the clocks (using metamorph for example).
He wants to add it to an aHome theme, so he'd have to edit the source for the theme to be able to somehow give the choice of which clock widget you would like, it would be a good amount of editing since the Home Replacements just look for a specific name in the theme and match it to the android source.
The code for adding the widget comes from aHome itself, not the theme though, the theme merely assigns image files to their location in the system. The sdcard idea is probably the easiest way to do it, instead of having it call out the image, it could call out the directory on the sdcard where they are stored.
Thank you for the responses, I figured it would be a little more complicated than just matching a file name. can you put the images in the drawable folder and call them from there?

Not without some serious recoding of the source.
Actually the code for the single clocks isn’t that big, kinda figured I could add the extra dial.pngs and duplicate my code. Or something of that nature

:::Mods please don't move this thread with the other theme tuts:::
Well i have pretty much finished FadetoBlue and now taking a small break before starting my next theme. I am banging my head trying to remember where the boot image is. I know i have seen them somewhere but can not remember where. So i figured why not ask the forums, but at the same time give info on where the images are located inside the apks. I know a lot of the images are easily figured out by the name, but i want to find and explain the tougher ones that the names don't make as much sense, also things like if you change the dialer in contacts.apk, you should also change the dialer in phone.apk.
Common Image names:
.9.png - These images are used for items that will stretch. These can be difficult to edit.
btn_ - Buttons, there are a lot of different buttons and they have different states. The most common are Normal, Longpress, Disabled(when it is linked to an editbox that has nothing in it yet, Selected(When highlighted and pressed with trackball) and Focused(When scrolling over with trackball)
pressed_application_background_static.png - This image has to do with pressing an app icon on the home screen or in the launcher
focused_application_background_static.png - This image has to do with using the trackball to scroll over app icons on the home screen or in the launcher.
ic_menu - these are all the files you seen when you hit Menu in various apps.
stat_notify - Notification alerts that are found on the top bar.
stat_sys - Icons for Battery, signal strength, wireless, connections. Also on the top bar.
status_bar - These all have to do with the images you see when you drag your finger down from the top of the screen.
title_bar - this is the bar where all of the Notifications pop up on.
Most common changes: Aside from icons.
Framework-res.apk -has the majority of UI images, Notification icons,
Contacts.apk - You see these images when you hit the green call button, press the contacts or phone icons, Has some of the same images as Phone.apk
Launcher.apk - Has the Clock, Folders, wallpapers and some Google Search widget images.
Phone.apk - You see these images, after you dial a number and call them. You should make the same changes here as in Contacts.apk
Icons:

Just incase =)
cheers for this, very useful to budding theme developers
i think if you look in framework-res and go to assets then images for the boot images
Sorry about the delayed reply, i kind of lost the thread =) thanks Kron!
Woot!
Someone like a mod should sticky this thread.
Thanks for the list.
Great list, I basically found this out all through just going through and looking at the images, but a single post with all the images would be great for all the new theme makers who are starting to come in and contribute. Thanks for posting this!
I second for a sticky.
This would have saved me many many hours when I was just starting out with this theme business. Very useful post!
Thanks for the info.
I tried looking for the pictures icon location but can seem to find them... The one in the launcher.apk was for the wallpaper icon. Any clue?

Sorry for the delayed reply, I didnt get the question at first so i didn't answer, then forgot about it.
But you will find the ic_launcher_gallery.png in Camera.apk and Launcher.apk. I believe by changing the one in the camera it will change it where you want.

Quick Question...
After a long time searching,(i didn't want to make a new thread for this if there was one already opened) I have a question...
I want to be able to edit just the launcher.apk or the drawables in framework-res.apk to be able to hold all the default launcher-app icons.
Basically, is there a way to place all the icons for the stock apps in one of those 2 above mentioned files and when opening the app tray, those icons show up as opposed to the ones in the individual .apk's?
any help on this would be nice. i'm tired of searching. lol

Currently, NO there is no way to do this on the way the android files are pulled to and from the system.
However, I believe Cyanogen has an idea to implement an easier way to skin the default system app's icons than the system we have now. This is one of the things he has on his list of 'to-do' for the Experimental builds if I remember correctly.
Until he's able to pull this off, we're stuck editing individual apk's. It sucks since there is a higher probability of something breaking doing this. Hopefully Cyanogen can get something working soon. It'd make my job a lot easier.
Gah again with the double post, mods please delete.

Thank you Prash for the response.
That makes sense, and i know that cyanogen is working on implementing the standalone icon feature.
The ONLY reason I ask this is because of a post that stericson made a while ago:

General Info:
Every .apk contains the images relating to itself. However, every apk has the ability to use the images in framework-res.apk. The images for every apk is located inside of itself. To find these images open up the apk, you can rename it to .zip or open it with an archiver of your choice, winrar, winace, etc. Then after opening the apk open the folder called res and inside of that there are folders that are named Drawable, drawable-land, drawable-port, etc. This is where the images are stored.

I really want to theme my phone, is there any tips to make it easyier
an also theres no meny png files that im not sure what changes what, is there a guide of any sort for that or anything.
I got editing images down but im still gettin lost on changing things
an out of curioisy is there a good themer out there that would be willing to work with me personally so im not gettin mixed results
here ya go..this should get you a start
http://www.google.com/cse?q=how+to+...ub-2900107662879704:fs7umqefhnf&ie=ISO-8859-1
Great resource here
im not sure if im wording this right, but to theme an app u open that apps apk. to theme a widget u open that widgets apk. right?
So what all does framwork control?
still tring to get it togather what png's edit what on my phone
Essentially yes. Most of the app's .png's will be in the respective .apk, although if it's a Sense ROM then a lot is stored in the 'com.htc.resources.apk'
The 'framework-res.apk' holds all the files for like the notification area, the pull down menu, status icons, buttons, tick boxes, radio buttons etc...
The best way to familiarise yourself with it all is just to have a look through the image folders and see what you see.
not much luck, im gettin lost, so ill be back in a cuple days let u knw if i got it yet, if i cant come up with it, ill just make a list of things i want done an see where it goes.
Are you on a Mac or PC?
Keep in mind, you have to sign it to get it to install if you unpack it. After weeks of failed signing attempts (I still cant get them to sign) I found a way around this though...just don't unpack it Use 7zip on PC or I am on a Mac so I use Springy. Replace what you want and you are good to go.
Let me know if you need more help with this method. It isn't the way everyone else does things, but it works for editing things and making it what you want.
@reanger91878 I was just looking into start some theming and was trying to figure out if using a Mac put me at a disadvantage... but I guess since I found you I'll know who to ask if I run into a problem. So I guess I'm gonna get Springy and see what I can figure out. (I've never done this crap before).
:edit: boo it costs money, any free options? or will the non-licensed version work for me?
Alright
heres what i want done
I have NFX Sprint 2.31.651.7 STOCK Odex Update3.
Lock screen bar where its grey i want black
All screens under settings an phone options like device1 pic 1 want there its white to be black an the black letters white with a green boarder.
Device2 pic: want top an bottom where its grey to be black save with bookmark widget an calander app
Device3: white section black an the letter white
Device4: change all screens from white to black an white lettes an the grey buttons at the bottom to green same with clock, messages, music and photos
Device5: i want the ui buttons at the bottom like that but for it to be Phone in the middle app drawer on the left an add to home on the right

Using a Mac does not put you at a disadvantage per se...kind of, but there are workarounds
You don't have to use Springy, that is just what I use. The key is to find an Mac application that can open up a .zip file without extracting it, because once you extract, you need to resign (no big deal really, but for whatever reason my computer won't properly sign). I think the free version of Springy lets you open up a ROM of a certain size? Can't remember...but if you are editing a theme, they should open, because most are under 15MB. You can also just search around for other Mac apps that handle zip files and find one that does not extract. Let me know what you come up with and what you need help with...I gained much knowledge here, and will gladly pass on what I have gleaned.

Out of what all i want edited what is controlled by frame work an then would the rest be Apk files in the system app
my biggest problem is im not understanding what xml files change what an some of the pngs idk what they change
edit: I found post that said this, is that a pretty good way to descride it.?
app folder - This folder contains all of the apps that will be installed during an update or wipe. You will need to extract only the apks of the apps you wish to change the icon and graphics for.
-Launcher.apk - This file is in the app folder and contains the menu launcher tab, clock, google search widget, wallpapers and some other things.
framework - This folder contains framework-res.apk, this is where the bulk of your editing will take place.
When you open a apk you will see:
assets - This will contain images, sounds and other content used by the programs. Not always used!
META-INF - This contain the encryption data of the update.zip.
res - This folder contains all of the png and xml files. The xml files are used to format the UI, these can be used to change the locations of things on the screen. The xmls need to be unencrypted first. Depending on the apk there can be a bunch of folders under the res folder but we will only concentrate on the drawable ones.
-drawable - The png files in this folder are displayed wheather the keyboard is open or closed. The majority of the files are here.
-drawable-land - These are the files that will show when the keyboard is open. There won't be as many files in these folders. Most of the time the programmer will re-organize the layout with an xml file.
so basically everything is a picture that i want changed an xml files control text color an placement of where things are or what?,
im try my best to but thoes darn xml files are messing with me lol
To start, don't mess with the XML files. Just make changes to the PNG files. Once you get familiar with changing icons and status bar colors, then you can start messing with XML files. Let's say you want a different alarm icon.
Look in the DeskClock.apk under res/drawable-mdpi. You would find an icon(PNG) you want to substitute with, size it to the same size as ic_launcher_alarmclock.PNG, name it the same name and replace the original in the apk.
Use adb to push the apk back to your phone. I would then reboot and then enjoy your new icon.
Some icons will be in drawable-mdpi and some just in drawable. No need to change hdpi on our phones.
The majority of your status bar icons and base OS icons will be in framework-res.apk.

Big question. When you rotate the phone, the status bar background (in themes like Darkness, with a design) gets messed up because it's shaped for our screen and not a small piece that gets tiled like the original. Can you make a landscape version of the background? I noticed in TouchWiz30Launcher.apk there is a homescreen_icon_bg.png and homescreen_icon_bg_h.png the latter being for a horizontal orientation of the launcher. Can we apply this concept to a custom made portrait AND landscape drawer background in twframework-res.apk? I would really like to know if it is possible, but am not asking for the creation of the background. I can make my own, but I need to know how to make it work.
I think you have to create a layout-land and layout-port folder and put something in there. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
A simpler idea might be to modify status_bar_expanded.xml to have multiple images for the background and bottom bar, like 3 where the center is fixed and the outer 2 are tiled matched up to look seamless of course. Or just allow certain parts to be stretched and some not with draw9patch.

Thanks a lot for your post, I looked into status_bar_expanded but couldn't find anything applicable. Looked at status_bar.xml and it contains all the info on status_bar_background in the vertical position. How would you put it all into horizontal? Would you have to edit the existing xml or make a new one in layout-land? Could I just copy it into layout-land and edit in some new filenames and stuff?
EDIT: You know how to signify a file it says @drawable/statusbar_background? Does this actually refer to status_bar_background.9.png? And how would you signify a drawlable-land destination? @drawable-land/statusbar_background?
That's mostly what I don't understand yet. In framework-res there are 3 folders:
layout
layout-land
layout-port
icon_menu_layout.xml is in land and port and not in just layout. I think because layout is default for both, and land or port is used for those modes if the file doesn't exist in layout. Just like an xml in drawable can replace an image if the same name is used. But I think there's more to it than that. I tried creating a layout-land and layout-port and moved status_bar_expanded.xml to both and it looked normal both ways. I would think that layout-land would automatically use the drawable-land images too. Something else is missing.
EDIT: Oh yes @drawable/statusbar_background is the png in drawable-hdpi, unless there's actually a drawable/statusbar_background.xml which would make it use that instead. I just don't know where drawable-land-hdpi fits in.
Inside the XML there is a "vertical" and "horizontal" section, you'd have to change that too. I have changed it and will try it tonight in my framework. I just don't understand the references it makes too well...
I've been trying to find a simple reference, but I guess most of it's here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/layout-objects.html
Or around that area of the docs. The vertical/horizontal I think is the alignment of objects in a group. I don't think it has to do with land/port.
This looks interesting too. I just found it. It looks like a way to view layouts on the computer.

I honestly don't know what that stuff means with a headache, so I can't understand what the links refer to, sorry
It's all really disorganized or I'm just used to Microsoft docs. The xml corelates with the android classes for coding java. So xml is used sort of like html tables where everything is nested so you can have rows or collumns of buttons (horiz/vert) or menus or whatever, but the elements used are all the members of the android class. It's just so hard to find the meaning of each one.

Introducing my latest project, the Honeycomb Skin Maker and Tablet Skin Installer.
Honeycomb Skin Maker can modify SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk to allow skinning system files on honeycomb tablets. Paired with the Android app "Tablet Skin Installer" skins can be applied easily with virtually no hacking required.
All images within these two APKs can be modified, and the XML files inside are modifiable to allow much greater skinning possibilities than previously possible.
Honeycomb Skin Maker can make .androidskin files which must be placed in the "Skins" folder on your internal SD card. This folder is created automatically when "Tablet Skin Installer" is first run.
The app requires root, and I can't give enough warnings about the potential to damage your tablet with this program. Ensure you have a method of recovery before attempting to install / make a skin.
Download Honeycomb Skin Maker for free from stormwave.me.uk/AndroidSkinInstaller/
(I can't post links yet).
It is still early days for this project and I have many ideas on how to expand it, but all feedback is appreciated and will be taken onboard.
Seems to be a very helpful project for themers!
Honeycomb Skin Maker v0.2
Thanks for the link and screenshot, that's a really big help.
The app is now free, I may choose to add a paid verson in the future.
I really want people to try this out as I think it'll make theming much easier.
Also, would it be possible for a moderator to add [TOOLS] to the beginning of this thread title?
Here is a market link to the skin installer.

I'll have to give this a test run as it looks pretty nice. Thanks for making it.
im tring to edit an .xml, because my systemui.apk will not decompile with any tools due to multilple resource errors. when I change a string in the xml with honeycombskinmaker.. it says dimension attribute not set, etc. any idea? built an .androidskin and installed on device streak 7, and doesnt show up in list in app. theres a blank listing at top but tried that, rebooted fine but didnt see changes I was hoping for: trying to edit HC 3.2 status bar clock color and change to bold. ?? thanks.
Hey everyone,
I've decided to share my personal icon pack. I've personally designed each icon using Inkscape and built the apk.
I've made it because I was annoyed by other icon packs always lacking some icons that I wanted.
Many icons (like those of google apps) look like the originals, just without the shadows.
My icon pack doesn't have many icons (about 100). The interesting thing is that I'm sharing also the source code to build the .apk (using Eclipse) and the .svg files to modify the existing icons/create new ones (using Inkscape), so that you can create your own personal icon pack.
The icons are for FHD screens, so 192x192. You can make them larger by exporting again the .svg files.
Atteched below you can file the apk file, the .zip source and some examples.
You can reuse and modify this app, just give me credit.
No requests please: I uploaded the source of the apk file and the icon svg files. If you want to add an icon just do it on your own.
Suggestion: to add a new icon you have to modify appfilter.xml, drawable.xml, iconpack.xml, add the icon in the res folder and then compile.

Thanks for this Open Source Project!
A few questions
Thanks a lot for this project. I could finally fulfill my dream of making my own icon pack.
I have a few questions, though. I don't understand what a few files are foo, in the project. It'd be great if you could explain thier function. The list of the files:
Values:
res/values/bools.xml [I see those are some booleans in there, but, when are they ever used?]
res/values/colors.xml [Those state the theme colours, but, where's the style used?]
res/values/dimens [No idea what this folder does]
res/values/styles.xml [Its stating the themes of the app, but, again, are those used anywhere?]
Assets:
assets/app_func_theme.xml [What does this file do?]
assets/desk.xml [What does this file do?]
assets/themecfg.xml [What does this file do?]
Drawable:
res/drawable/grid_selector.xml [I guess, it determines how the list of icons is presented, but, it doesn't work in all launchers, right? I mean, in Nova launcher, I didn't get any grid, I got one in ADW though.]
res/drawable/square_over.xml [It's used in the grid_selector.xml file, but, how's it affecting the app in any way?]
I don't intend to be mean or offensive, but, I am a very newbie Android developer and thus, probably didn't understand what these files are doing. It'd be great if you can clear this out for me.
Once again, thanks a lot for the source code!
