If you are running Dwang on a Stock SPL and you are having problems installing a theme, I have some suggestions and ideas, some of these are very basic and common but ill repeat them anyway because youd be surprised at how many people dont follow these:
1) Make sure the theme you are using is compatible with the right version of Dwang that you are using. (keep in mind that v1.13-1.17.1 themes are interchangeable among those versions. ex: you can use a 1.13 theme on 1.17.1)
2) Make sure to ALWAYS have a Nandroid/BART backup, in case anything goes wrong.
3) Make sure youre using an EXT 3 file system.
4) Do NOT wipe BEFORE or AFTER flashing a theme. If you are using one theme and wish to switch to another theme, simply flash your base ROM over the old theme, then flash the new one.
5) Always have your apps backed up if you dont want to go looking for them again. I suggest ASTRO File Manager which can be downloaded from the Market for free.
Q. STUCK AT THE G1 SCREEN?
A. This happens sometimes if the theme is a little too large and you have Stock SPL....but what if you really want the theme and are afraid to upgrade your SPL because youre afraid of bricking your phone, or because youre one of the few people like me who are unable to upgrade to the latest radio? Theres a solution for that, I cant promise itll work for every single theme, but Ive tested it with Darkstar and DBeCe's black theme which gave me problems before I tried this method. I believe it will work for most themes on Dwang.
The solution is simple, try to free up space in your SYSTEM partition by moving your ringtones, sound effects, alarms, etc to your sdcard. This will free up around 2.66mb in the system partition. You can do this using Terminal Emulator.
type in
$su
mount -o remount,rw /system/dev/mtdblock3 /system
cp -r /system/media/audio /sdcard/
rm -R /system/media/audio
and you should see your audio folder in the root of your sdcard. You can add ringtones and sounds there too if you like, but the point is, now your SYSTEM has a little more space.
Restart your phone and boot into recovery and try to flash the theme again, and it should work now.
Q....OKAY SO I GOT PAST THE G1 SCREEN AND IT SHOWS THE ANDROID SPLASH SCREEN BUT AFTER A WHILE I GET A BLACK SCREEN!!!
A. If this happens to you, then you must format your EXT 3 partition. I suggest using the latest Amon_RA Recovery (v1.5.2 at the time of this post, MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT RECOVERY FOR YOUR PHONE).
If youre still having problems, i suggest wiping everything including the phone, dalvik cache, battery and rotate settings (i like to wipe everything 3 times, but thats just me), reinstall dwang, login at the beginning, wait for the sync, and make sure to open up market and agree to the terms otherwise you might have problems with the market when you install a theme, (also keep in mind when u flash the rom again, you have to move the ringtones back to the sdcard again using the method i mentioned above), after you have done all that, reboot into recovery, flash the theme again, and it should be okay.
I hope Ive helped. Im still new to the scene but Ive found that this works for me and I just wanted to share, and I hope I helped and that your themes are working now.
If you have any suggestions or feedback, please feel free to share.
Thank You!
well done on a detailed and excellent advice. Keep it up
Great tutorial. I have the HardSPL and I am getting the same symtoms. All the themes that I have tried get to the theme splash and then stop. The longest I have allowed one to run is an hour. Do you think that space is still the issue? I am going to try these steps as they cannot hurt, but I thought that I was good with the HardSPL.

the hard spl has the same partition spacing as the stock spl, it is the 1.33.2005 spl that provides more space to system.
tryed it..
Tried this method and only got darkstar to work for a min then force close when I tried to login to my google account and wouldn't stop force closing....U got any other methods that might work.

Thanks everybody, if you have any other suggestions, ill add them to the first post.
darkstar 0.6.7 is kinda complicated... you said google login so im guessing you wiped before u flashed? normally you shouldnt do that but for this theme i had to, ill explainin the next paragraph, but first of all, did you try to skip the initial sign in and then try to login by clicking on gmail or checking sync settings? i had a similar problem with another theme, and thats how i solved it. let me know if that works.
this is why darkstar 0.6.7 is a little different and more challenging to install compared to most themes (at least for me):
darkstar 0.6.5 flashed fine with me, when i had dwang 1.15 but when i upgraded dwang 1.17.1 and used darkstar 0.6.7, it gave me a little trouble and i had to get a little creative in order to install it properly because for some reason the market app was pushed to ext and it was no longer available after i wiped the ext before, and i kept getting a black screen if i didnt wipe the ext system. so what i did was wipe everything flash the stock rom, backup the market app using astro file manager (some reccomend backup for root users, i havent tried it yet), flashed the theme got a black screen, wiped the ext3, then i reflashed the theme again and i got it working but i was missing market, and i couldnt download astro without market.....unless i went to google using the browser and i looked up astro 2.2.3 apk and i downloaded the app directly to my phone, and restored market. however the market will start force closing even after you run fix_permissions so i went against the rule of wiping after a flash, and i decided to wipe the phone....lo and behold its been running flawlessly ever since, but it took a lot of work, idk why it gave me such a hard time this time, but i managed to get it working. try the first method first and let me know how that goes.

im glad u finally got it working. idk why that specific theme was so difficult to install. the g1 screen was still stuck even after you moved the ringtones to sd?

Yea moved ringtones to sd... and still got stuck......but I think u just need to run the rom for a bit before flashing a theme. But yea it looks great.... and thanks for the help.

there are a few things that could be removed from the /system partition of dwang's rom.
rm /system/app/GenieWidget.apk
rm /system/app/Maps.apk (since the updates are installed on the /data partition)
rm /system/app/BugReport.apk (its not in cyan's roms anymore)
cp /system/app/Mail.apk /data/app/
rm /system/app/Mail.apk
(cyan did it in his latest release)
(maybe? haven't tested this one)
rm /system/app/LatinImeTutorial.apk
There are probably some more "useless" .apk's that could be removed.

thank you so much for confirming my suspicions. i knew there was more useless stuff in the apps folder but i wasnt sure how to test it all. ill try this method out later tonight and try to flash a large theme and see what happens, ill add this info to the first post tonight!
sorry im late guys ive been pretty busy. i stumbled upon this page on cyanogenmods wiki
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Barebones
it shows which files can be deleted safely out of /system and /dev. im gonna try removing a lot of those apks from my dwang rom and i wanna find a huge theme to flash thats supposed to be used only with danger spl, anyone have any suggestions? i think this might work. btw does anyone know if its possible to make a script to make removing multiple apks easier?
Very old mod. Probably no longer works. Use at own risk. No longer supported by me.
ROOT REQUIRED
ONLY works on ROMS that include HtcLockScreen.odex.
So it wont work if you've flashed lwp patches, Sprint ROMS or anything that removes the .odex file.

This is a modification of the STOCK HTC Sense lockscreen that removes the background so you can see your homescreen behind it.
*Users need to already be comfortable with using 'adb' I won't be providing support on that since there are numerous threads with instructions all around.*
**Before** pushing the apk into that folder, you'll need to FIRST perform the following steps to remove the stock lock wallpapers from loading, as well as any cached custom wallpaper you have applied. You can perform these via adb as listed, or if you have Root Explorer (on the marketplace), you can navigate to the folders listed and delete the items that way.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /data/misc/lockscreen
rm *
cd /system/customize/resource
rm htc_wallpaper*
exit
Note: You may or may not have anything to delete in /system/customize/resource, so if you get an error message while using adb, don't worry.
HtcLockScreen.zip MD5: 9423D8C3D6CBBF3E084CD185130F9649
*APK NOTE: APKs are case sensitive, be sure you install this without renaming it, or it wont overwrite your original APK*
After you extract the zip to your sdk/tools directory perform the following (case sensitive):
Code:
adb push HtcLockScreen.apk /system/app
adb reboot
If you get "read-only" errors, try "adb remount" OR "adb shell", then, "su", then "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system" and then the other commands.
EDIT: Clock-less version now available for download! Same instructions apply.
Clock-less Info: **Since some users may have performed the 'experienced users' steps below, an Android image has been added to 'lockscreen_topedge.png' so that it isn't 100% transparent.
If you want to remove this image: First, download the ZIP below with the PNGs, take any one of those and rename it to 'lockscreen_topedge.png, open the lock apk in your favorite zip file manager (winzip, winrar, 7-zip), navigate to "res\drawable-normal-mdpi" and drag your newly-renamed PNG in there. If a dialog pops up, be sure you select the option that has NO compression, this is usually called "Store."**
Make a post if you have any problems NOT related to 'adb.' Again, support is not provided for that.
Clockless Lock.zip MD5: B604B530E02C47DA81AD8B4563BE71D2
__________________
Now some optional additional steps for **experienced users only** (I suck at tech support so if you ask something, I'll try to answer, but no guarantees):
If you put the PNGs included in the zip below into 'com.htc.resources.apk\res\drawable-mdpi', it will remove the HTC "Arc" on the lockscreen. Now, to create your own Arc replacement, all you'll need to do is go into 'HtcLockScreen.apk\res\drawable-normal-mdpi' and change the lockscreen_topedge.png to your liking A much easier change than fiddling with your resources apk everytime and its only 1 image to change, instead of trying to line up three. Of course, if you remove the Arc and do not change your lockscreen_topedge.png, you will have a completely invisible lockscreen, so don't freak yourself out, just make something for that PNG.
*Does not seem to work with Hero or Legend ROMs*
I've used adb push (to change my boot animation) but I can't say I know how to use it.
Can you specify which commands to use?
EDIT: do you have to have root for this?
Yes you have to have root. You would do 'adb install HtcLockScreen.apk'.

waahhh no X_X this isn't an app to be installed. you are overwritting the old one (after youve backed up!) the "install" command installs to data/app, which isn't what we want (but thanks for keepin an eye on the thread for me wshuman3 )
if you put the apk in your sdk\tools directory, then the command would be
Code:
adb push HtcLockScreen.apk system/app
you were correct about needing root tho

i believe it should still show you the home screen, considering with the normal lock app by htc in order to unlock it with the dot pattern, you have to pull the slider down, then it shows you the pattern. so going off of that, then it should still do the same thing, but instead of showing a pic on the lock screen, it shows the home screen, then you slide it down to unlock, which i would assume that it would then pop up the dot pattern.
ECLIPS3's explanation is entirely correct. locking will not hide your homescreen. but then, if someone wanted to see your homescreen with the normal lockscreen, they would just have to slide down the Arc most of the way and they'd see most of it. not secure either way.
but i dont think thats what you were even worried about Lemcott. but explained it anyway
yep, you got it I'm not really worried about them seeing the homescreen (oh no! they saw my poor organizational skills! I'm ruined! haha) I just have my phone locked done mainly because my friends and I have a pretty long running epic war to change each other's facebook status'/tweets to very embarrassing things, nosey family members, and just in case i ever forgot it somewhere.
cant wait till i get my new phone in tomorrow and patch this sucker on. speaking of which, if i were to patch this after flashing on Jamezelle's sense-abloe 2.0, would it look just like the normal htc lock screen just transparent? or will it look like sense-able's lock screen but transparent?

it will look like the normal lock screen, just transparent. but you could edit the transparent lock screen to look like jameselles, just transparent. im sure someone would be willing to do that for you. i might, just dont have time right now.

99.9% sure your senseable lock would be in-tact, just transparent. since your senseable lock's graphics are stored in com.htc.resources.apk and this is only a change to your HtcLockScreen.apk
Running Ivan's 0.8T2, works like a charm. Thanks!
For all of those confused on how to install this, you simply unzip HtcLockscreen.zip on your computer, follow the instructions in the first post, then you:
Code:
adb remount
adb push HtcLockScreen.apk /system/app
adb reboot
and when your phone boots back up, you'll be looking at a shiny new transparent lockscreen.

Would anyone consider making a "lockscreen" that is nothing BUT a photo/walpaper?
No clock, no arc, nothing?
Maybe just a "walpaper" or photo?
Or even better- Truly Transparent!
That would be cool!

If read the "advanced" directions in the OP, it basically explains how to do this, even though he was trying to tell you how to AVOID doing that. but I agree, I'd like it too. It would almost be like a security feature cuz only you would know where to swipe to unlock

You could do that but then ur left with a /data/data folder for ur app and its name under packages.xml.
The other thing that kills me is that a lot of these apps keep popping up for now reason. I run "Advanced Task Killer" on a frequent basis, but I'll find apps like "Slacker" sitting there, taking up memory.
I know a lot of these apps are set to run on startup.... but why are they just starting up at random times?
I feel like I have so little control over this phone... it actually scares me. I knew everything my WinMo phone was doing at all times.

Now, is that a script I need to write for each app? I haven't even gone so far as to explore the file system, let alone write scripts. Is there a good (recommended) app for putting scripts together? ...or are you just using a notepad type editor in Windows, then copying them over via SD card?

Sure u can write a quick .bat script that does this or manually enter them in command-prompt up 2 u. Btw, what exactly is ur issue with the bloat-software ? is it the space its taking up ? or being shown in app drawer ? Cuz if ur using launcher-pro u can hide those apps from the drawer. Honestly they don't take up tht much space.

Well, the biggest thing is that they're actually running without me opening them (eg: Slacker). That is really starting to piss me off. Secondly, they are very clutter-some. First, as you probably already know, every phone is built differently and so things like that can vary.
My guess is that there's probably too much unwanted file on your phone, which have probably just been stacking from flash to flash. There's a app for that but I can't remember the name (sorry ) - perhaps you can look it up.
Other thing, if you have been flashing over and over:
1. Attend some flashocolic meeting
2. a full clear would probably clear up alot of stuff.
If you go for a masterclear (Odin) and re-install your ROM, don't forget to backup your file with Titanium Backup + pictures and put your contacts on your sim card (copy the file from your phone to your comp). -Just a little reminder.

Try deleting any apps that you don't use, and also try an app called "SD Maid". I got it from the apps section, but it may be in the market now. It searches for leftovers of stuff you've deleted. Cause sometimes things leave traces of themselves behind after a delete. Should free up some room.
Also, theres an app called "Autostarts" which lets you select what apps actually start on the boot up, which should also speed it up if you disable some.

YES - SD Maid. That's the app I was talking about ^^
U could try disabling the media scanner service if u have lots of media loaded, and run it manually when u need it.

Hey,
I saw this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725525
and I saw the ringtones, fonts and I'm like oh I would really like the ringtones and fonts so I downloaded them, opened the zip and took the system folder and copied them to my sd card, I copied the fonts fine, then when I copied the ringtones the phone rebooted and now it keeps rebooting, I didn't backup anything and I would really like to avoid flashing a new rom, any help?
Thanks,
Steven

were you on stock rom? you need to recopy the original folder back into yours.
whenever you do anything within the system remember to back up your rom!

if you want Xperia ringtones etc. then install my Arc2 ROM, its Xperia designed.
if your on a custom, best way to restore any ROM is to re flash it again.
I must stress though, messing with system files can cause undesired effects which you have just found out...Always back up your ROM!

i personally use GOSMS and it auto backups mine every day :good:
also try call backup and restore from market too....
ok if you want to install Arc2 rom then simply install the rom, and do the data2whatever.
reboot back into recovery...and flash this http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?sp9bhyqy6z49xht its the current theme, which i did apply to all roms, but sometimes things don't work as they should...common bug which the kitchen does give out..lol

I do use that but I didn't expect this and I didn't back up my texts, I can't access the phone it going to boot (I think it's called bootloop)
Do you think I could use ADB Shell in recovery mode to delete the extra audio files?

no but if you use full Linux...ie able to boot Linux up on its own and not through windows then u can access system files that way as it loads both the system and sd partitions up giving full editable access....not for the faint hearted though...even i don't like using that way lol.
And now as your getting a boot loop, which i did when adding both Xperia and HTC ringtones together found out, the only way is to wipe your rom and start again.
as a reference for next time....please do a backup!
ive given you the best options i know off....and i built the roms...i didn't expect someone to do what you just did...or i would have warned you off from it as i found out the hard way...just like you have.

no Linux must have its own drive.....putting it on usb wont allow you to do anything..
you have to install Linux onto a hdd an fully install it, takes a few hrs,
reason being, you need Linux to see and do everything without windows, running of a USB won't allow you to edit anything, just have a play to see if you u want it installing.
then you require the additional files/drivers to make your phone become recognizable within Linux, then you plug your phone in and up comes both partitions..

Read the while post throughout and then make your decision. Good luck if you do it.
