Question about switching ROMS - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a Android noob.
Had my Hero a few weeks now.
Its rooted and running Fresh 1.1.
But I like to try out different roms.
If I flash to Modacos most recent release what happens to all my settings?
Also what happens to my installed apps? Do I need to reinstall them from the market?
Obviosly any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks.

as far as flashing modacos rom no you shouldnt loose your settings it should just flash over fresh.
as your apps go im not really sure I rooted the day I got the phone and have been running apps2sd since. if you arent running apps2sd and are worried about it you could always do an adb pull on
/system/app
and
/system/app-private
just to get them backed up
but I belive that even if they are no longer installed then they should still show in market under my downloads

do a nandroid backup in case you loose all your apps then you can just restore to the way it was before the flash

Actually user installed apps (apps from the Market) go to /data/app, if I remember correctly.

/system/app/ is for system apps & ROM included apps, while user installed apps from the Market go into /data/app/.

[Q] how to put a theme on a htc hero sprint running 2.2.1 cm 6.1.0

im trying to put a theme on my htc hero and cant im running 2.2.1 cm 6.1.0-heroc
What exactly did you do? You should download the theme compatible with the rom you are running then put the zip on the root of your SD then flash via recovery. However you must have a recovery installed. Different themes have different directions posted in their thread for installing such as maybe wiping dalvik after flashing other than that after flashing it over your current rom you should be fine to boot up

Ok, first off do you have Rom manager installed (it's free in the market) & are you running cm6.1 stable?

I'm having problems installing a theme as well. I've been getting a lot of .apk files and I put them on the root of my sdcard and then install them like I would install normal apps but afterwards I have no idea where the installed .apk has gone. Do I need to change .apk files to .zip?

Well it depends if it's a zip file I go into recovery to install it. I've tried that once with the Dark Horse v4 theme only to have it get trapped on the boot screen, even after wiping both davlik and cache numerous times so I thought I'd try the apk files. I use the app Linda Manager for those.Go through the steps and once it says installed, that's where I loose it. The first time I used Linda Manager I installed the Live Mario wallpaper and that worked flawlessly probably because I at least knew where to look for live wallpapers on my phone.
Just seem to be having the hardest time installing any sort of theme on this phone.

Ok I'm running dark horse now so here's what I would do & did. Place cm6.1 STABLE or AOSP which ever you prefer on the root of your SD along with gapps (or not) anyway go into recovery, factory data wipe, cache & dalvik wipe then flash both of the zips. I'm running cm6.1 stable which I prefer. Then go ahead & reboot afterwards get settled in. Then put the zip of the theme on your SD & go into recovery then flash the theme if you go on the post I think it says to wipe cache & dalvik only before flashing the theme but even if it doesn't I believe I did. After flashing then reboot & you should be fine. On the darkhorse thread it gives you a link to the new gapps & you can flash those after cm or AOSP if you'd like & they give some directions to themeing the new market with some zips but that comes after you got the theme going. I hope this helps.

Yeah, I mean if there are others they don't get a chance to pop up as force closed because the dialer will instantly pop up after I select close Was hoping that it was just a fluke and that it would work but like I said after I select force close it'll just continue to pop up, can't do anything else.

Thinking....hmmm I think I had this problem once. Then what I did was factory wipe, cache wipe, then I did a dalvik wipe. Flashed the cm rom & gapps rebooted then went back & flashed the theme but I didn't flash the theme directly after. I let cm run for awhile then flashed it & I was good. I'm not really sure what's wrong because if you're running stable you should be fine. Also did you dl the theme zip for cm & not AOSP right?

[Q] [REQ] Enable Auto Install Feature In Froyo Build

I noticed that on my Froyo enabled HD2 every time I install a new build the market automatically installs the apps there were downloaded previously. Is there a way for this to be enabled on Captivate ROMs? If this has been asked and answered somewhere else, please let me know. Thanks.

You can use Titanium Backup to achieve the exact same thing.
Mine has always done that, maybe because I restore my Android ID. I flash my phone at least 2 times a week.
EDIT: Mis-read OP, my apps are not automatically installed but the Market seems to keep a history of FREE as well as PAID apps I had previously installed.
It may have to do with the product id. I know my aria did what you describe and I think the stock rom did as well. The froyo leaks mess up the android id and the efs folder. It may be responsible for our lack of that feature
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Only ROM for the Captivate that's every done this for me is the Cyanogen 6.1 Beta I tried out a while ago. Apps immediately just started downloading lol.
I thought touchwiz ripped that feature out.
I'd also like to request this. Titanium backup is different.
Having the right android id # only had about 1/4 of my free apps be saved so that didn't work for me

Also had the same happening to me on Gingerbread. Prefer TiBu as I can restore my app data as well.

Not exactly the same thing. I have to install TiBu (which is in the market) if I have not created the zip file to install via ClockWork or if it is not in the ROM already.
Have you seen what I am referring to? It is a much better process because it fully automated; add your google account and it begins pulling down your apps (including TiBu).

I have two different devices, Samsung Captivate and an HTC HD2. I use the same google account on both. I recently installed a newer, different ROM, put in my google account and it began to download the apps that I have loaded on my Captivate. If it is ID related, it does not seem to be a problem between devices.
How can I ensure that I am using the same ID on my Captivate between flashes?

I have noticed that when I use TiBu to restore between flashes I get FC on app. I think this may have something to do with the Market ID option checked in TiBu. I have not been able to find a doc to explain these settings, so I end up having to redownload all my apps. As long as I am restoring on the same ROM I am good. However, if I try to restore between flashes (sometimes even between build updates) TiBu fails. Not sure why this happens.

[Q] Fc's on most of the GB roms

I've tried Apex, Mosaic, dlev and Continuum roms... With all but continuum, I get force close's after restoring apps/data in Tibu.
Example, I wipe data cache, dalvic and then flash one of the roms. Once it's booted up, I go into Titanium, do a batch restore of apps, and once it finishes, I go to start Angry Birds and it fc's. It can be any of the apps, its not just directed at Angry Birds. (it even happens with stock apps, like Memo or messaging)
So, last night I flashed back to Continuum and not one fc... but, I'm missing some of the goodies from the other roms. EDT tweaks for one!!!
Anyway, I guess my question is what's the diff between Continuum and the other roms, as far as this specific problem?
Thanks
seems like an issue with data restore in tibu...idk why it worked for continuum but...try and delete all the backups and run a fresh batch backup now that they are running. then flash another rom and see if that still happens.

I just don't understand, because really, it's not rocket science and yet I don't see other people with the issue!
Check for tibu updates, and go into preferences and force tibu to use system busybox instead of its own (option is at bottom of pref menu). I would also check for updates to superuser.

I had a similar problem as well. I tried the Dlev and Obsession ROMs but got FC's on some apps on both using the same method as you described. I tried one more time with Obsession but also installed the Symply GSII theme before restoring apps and everything worked fine. I'm not sure why that would have made a difference but my phone has been working great for a couple weeks now.
Well, I'm not sure what worked and what didn't... I tried the busybox change but still had fc's when I installed dlev's rom. So, I tried Apex again, and so far, no fc's. I just don't get it...
Thanks for everyone's input!

[Q] Why are old apps already installed after fresh wipe and ROM install?

Hey guys,
I'm new at posting in the forums, so I apologize if I have put this in the wrong section. I read a lot of posts, but this is the first time i have posted a thread, ever. =P
Anyway, I have a Rooted White T-Mobile G1, I was running the somewhat recent build of Roalex's COS-DS ROM, and it started to get really sluggish and I was having a few other problems. (I love that ROM, and he has done a great job, I just felt like a change.) So I went to install Ginger Yoshi 1.4 after doing a nand backup, SD Wipe, and SuperWipe. Once i finished installing the ROM, I rebooted my phone and it started fine and everything. Then it asked me to choose which home I wanted... Which was confusing, considering it was a fresh wipe. I should only have 1 Home launcher on there. I realized that I have several apps from past times. (as in, a WHILE ago. I haven't had these apps for over a month easily...) I tried another wipe and install. Still to no avail... I did some searching and I couldn't find anything that could help me. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to explain in some detail. Anyone have any Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
--Doogle
I don't know this rom, but nowadays many roms have a backup functionality included and they are backing up the old (g)apps, flash the rom and re-install (some of) the old apps again.
"Some" because normally there is a list of apps to be backed up and re-installed. If your launcher is on that list and the rom has a different one pe-installed you then have two.
If you want to be sure to get a "clean" installation, use
Code:
fastboot erase system -w
Or flash ohsaka super wipe before flashing the rom.

Sorry, I should have specified, the "SuperWipe" that I mentioned above, is Ohsaka Super Wipe... I have flashed it many times, and reflashed the ROM many times as well... Still having the apps installed. The wierdest part of it all, is that they don't seem to be using my sd card space OR internal space, almost as if they are somehow from the EXT4 partition I have, and they never got erased... The odd thing is, is that I never figured out how to move stuff to EXT, so there shouldn't be anything on there...
My guess would be that these "old" apps were downloaded originally from the market. If you are registering the phone with the same account you were using before, the market will download and install all the apps again from the market.

Well the reason it couldn't be that, is that I actually don't have a data plan. I always skip sign in, and then enable WiFi. So the apps wouldn't be able to download until after I was signed in to my account. Yet, they are there right when I start :/
This is a very odd, occurance. Haha. Thanks you two for your responses though.

Bionic 5.5.1_84_DBN-55 Auto_DeOdexer

For those of you that do not want to DeOdex their phone manually, here's a script I created to do it for you. I've created this same script before for the Droid X, and it's quite simple. Here's what you need.
1) Your phone must be Rooted.
2) You must install Bionic_Bootstrapper.
Below you can find these items.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO ROOT AND BOOTSTRAP
Once you have that.... download my DeOdexer and put it on your sdcard.
Bionic_AutoDeOdexer
MIRROR
Reboot into recovery. BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!!!
Once that completes, then go to install from zip. Choose file from zip... find the Bionic_DeOdexer zip file... and run it.
There is a script at the beginning that checks the build.prop file and makes sure you have the correct build. You must have 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. If you do not, I hope it fails.
Reboot.... and all should be good. Now that you are DeOdexed.... have fun theming!
As you should know, do this at your own risk. Yes, I've tested this on my phone and had no issue. This doesn't mean you won't experience a problem. I'm not responsible for what happens to your phone.
ENJOY!!!
Worked great. Saved me a lot of time from manually deodexing.

Have you removed or touched any of the system/app/ 's ?
I'm running the rooted stock rom. I haven't removed any programs or modified/renamed anything in /system/apps, however, I did freeze some of the bloat using TB. Do I need to defrost the apps first before running this script, or does it matter?

If you modified any of the APKs, to include freezing them, I cannot guarantee it will work. Best thing is to be completely stock and rooted. At least that's the way I did this script.
Thanks for the answer! TB has a batch defrost, so if I decide to go ahead & run this script, I'll defrost everything first.
I did mine with frozen apps and it seems to be working well. Was able to install the 1% mod and use a custom battery icon too.

Good to know. I do know that depending on how the person downloads some packages, they may get corrupted during download. If it fails one time... try again. If it continues to fail, re-download and try again.
So the file isn't available any more?

Worked great here, didn't unfreeze anything before running it and no problems to report.
Kind of a goofy question, but is there any reason that deodexing the stock (rooted) rom would worsen data loss issues?
The reason I ask is that I reverted to stock yesterday after experiencing substantial data problems with UNLEASH3D 1.5. Ran well for the entire day and this morning. Then, a couple hours ago, I ran this script and have had nothing but issues since, with both WiFi and cellular data dying, and not coming back without a reboot. Reverted to stock again, and all is normal.
Any ideas?

I have these same issues on stock, on .892 and on any roms - I really think it is just the phone :/ - there is a known bug on the bug list about data connectivity issues.
Btw the .892 radio is complete crap.... at least on my phone it is...
Market Apps
After running this script, I noted that my normal list of around 60 or so market apps is now showing only around 13 apps. Also, the market app asked me for authorization when I started it up. So, I don't know if this script, or maybe an automatic update to the market app has caused my missing downloaded apps.
They are still on the phone, and still backed up with TB, but they are not shown in the market My Apps page.
Any thoughts or solutions?
Corey
...Argh, never mind, this phone seems to have a mind of its own. The account chosen for My apps was not my main google account but another one. Not sure how this happens, but I find little things like this all the time with Android. My favorite is that my email delivery settings (push vs. manual vs. schedule) seem to change on their own!
