I've installed maps from both the market, and the thread in XDA dev, but although the app says it's 3.4.0, I'm not able to multitouch.
I'm on CM 4.2.14.1 with the 10meg hack.
Also, the main application I use (GeoBeagle) is now crashing with the new map. I'm wondering what I can do to make sure I've got everything installed correctly, or how to revert back to a previous version where I can at least still go geocaching.
You can either rm by going into the Terminal emulator and typing this in:
Code:
$ su
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cd /system/app
# rm Maps.apk
# mount -o r,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
This will remove the modified version.
afterwards go into the Market and download the newest un modified maps application.
thanks, yeah, i did that... however, when I go to market, it says that Google Maps is "installed" even though the options for "open" and "uninstall" are greyed out.
I am indeed in a pickle.

Try rebooting.
if you can download the maps from the market then hoorah
if not:
Then try to flash the modded maps back in.
if it still doesnt work after you flash it and try it again, go on the market and you should be able to download the original maps 3.4.0.
otherwise the last resort would be to wipe and re flash the rom.
sorry if this causes any inconveniences.
Yeah, I did get the 3.4.0 from Market working again, but it still does NOT perform multitouch. Is this only available in the moded version on G1?
*edit* I did get multitouch working by installing the update from market first, and then adding the modded version afterwards. Geobeagle is still crashing, however.

Happy to hear it.
and yeah ive been seeing some posts where people have been saying that somethings have been crashing.
but it should work out fine. and maybe the dev of this app will make a modded ver that wont crash GeoBeagle
Lucky you, how about me?

I used option 2 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627582
Okay, so now I'm wondering if i've destroyed whatever file lets applications access the maps program, because none of the geocaching apps work when I try to show the map. I had done some wildcard deletions in my desperation in trying to fix the maps.
Can anyone point me towards what I can do to fix that? As in what files might need replacing? I've already re-flashed CM 4.2.12.1, but that didn't repair any associations afaict.

Depends on what you deleted.
2 Options.
1.Find out exactly what you deleted and maybe we will be able to help you out.
2.Full Wipe and Re-Flash
These are the only options I see at least.

Just so you know, this isn't a normal installation apk. In order to install it you're gonna have to move it to /data/app through a terminal with superuser permissions. i.e. through terminal emulator:
su
mv /sdcard/teeter.apk /data/app

Has anyone been able to install this app via the terminal emulator if so will you post the commands? I have been searching around for quite a while and I still can't find it. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
hello i too am having problems installing apk. tried to install from adb but got same error and force close. can someone point me in the right direction? thanks
You need the HTC frameworks and a ramdisk that puts them into the BOOTCLASSPATH. My CM2-ADP build has this (and Teeter). I doubt you'll get it working on a US firmware, though, because you can't change the BOOTCLASSPATH without breaking the preinstalled apps.
ok got it. I did try your build yesterday but had too many problems with the camera and video force closing. didnt see any real proformance change from jf1.51 either maybe need to update spl.
thank for the answer.
I found the teeter that can be installed using a regular installer app like Lindas. Its off the sapphire build. It does work but it is rather buggy on the g1.

Sorry, wrong thread
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UL4HK3DZ
heres another apk
In the Market, when I look at Google Maps, it displays "Free" as an option instead of saying "Installed" like my other apps.
I try to install it by clicking on it and clicking Install, but after downloading I receive the error, "Package file was not signed correctly."
This is a very minor annoyance to me, not a problem. I looked at the version number of my installed Google Maps, and it's 3.1.2 (the same as the Market version).
Firmware information is in my signature if anyone is wondering.
I'm also a bit curious as to whether I'm the only one with this problem or not...?
Edit: added in additional info from below:
OH, I forgot to mention - if I try uninstalling Google Maps, it tells me that the uninstall was unsuccessful.
I got an error upon trying to mv /system/app/Maps.apk as well.
Thats an experimental build. Might be why. Never had that problem yet. Im going to install v4.1.11.1. I'll let you know if I run into the same problem.

Pardon my sig, it's been updated. I've been on 4.1.11.1 for a few days now. The problem was there before 4.1.11.1 as well.
OH, I forgot to mention - if I try uninstalling Google Maps, it tells me that the uninstall was unsuccessful.

idk. I updated to 4.1.11.1 and same problem. If I get around to it, I'll try to replace it from the recovery console. I wonder if this will work, or is there some type of dependancies needed during the official update .....
I was bothered by the fact that Google Talk didn't show some of the messages I received. Johan de Koning submitted a patch that wasn't accepted by Google but works well. I applied this patch for personal use, but I thought that you might be interested as well.
Also, I had a look at the IM application and I modified it to allow login instead of having the "phone number cannot be read from your SIM" error. This might or might not work. It works for me, but users in the US have reported that it still fails.
UPDATE 16th Jun 2010:
Added version 1.1.2 from Cliq.
UPDATE 3rd Feb 2010:
New eclair version for IM.apk, completely untested. Might or might not work.
Patched ImProvider is no longer useful for Android versions >= 2.
Also, I removed the cupcake IM.apk because I just noticed it is broken and won't work. No-one should be still running a rooted cupcake anyway.
Notes
This is for donut. I tested it on cm 4.2.2 and 4.3.2.1, but it should work with any donut rom. As far as I know, it doesn't use sms at all. It still needs the tmo plugins to login, but no sms are sent. Other than that, it does exactly the same as when you login on wifi.
Installation
Some of these steps will fail depending on the rom (the dalvik-cache and odex part). These errors can be safely ignored.
First reboot into recovery, then, on your computer :
Code:
adb shell
mount /system
mount /sdcard
cp /system/app/IM.apk /sdcard/IM.apk
cp /system/app/ImProvider.apk /sdcard/ImProvider.apk
exit
adb push ImProvider.zip /system/app/ImProvider.apk
adb push IM.zip /system/app/IM.apk
adb shell
mount /system/sd
rm /system/sd/dalvik-cache/*
rm /system/app/ImProvider.odex
rm /system/app/IM.odex
umount /system/sd
umount /system
umount /sdcard
reboot
Of course, I'm not responsible if anything breaks.
More information about the sources is available in this post.
which roms are these for? cupcake? donut? hero? haha. i pushed them to my hero rom and they do not show up in my app tray or in applicantion manager.
Tested them on cm 4.2.2 and it works. Does this use ip traffic or sms?
ok cool, probably for donut. i tried on Hero cupcake and it fails, just keep getting ForceCloses. owell, i dont use it anyways but just thought it be fun =)

I'm going to push it into Cyan's build and remove TmoImPlugin.apk and see if it still works.
Well, it doesn't work without tmoimplugin, and with that, I know it uses sms.
Sorry for the lack of details.. I updated the first post to make it clearer. It doesn't send sms afaik, becaus my plan doesn't have unlimited sms and I wasn't charged for any sms since I patched the IM app.
Also, this is for donut only, because the IM subsystem changed a bit since cupcake.
can you somehow modify im.apk so that it would stay in memory?
seems to work fine *tries out this im comparison to ebuddy, seems much faster ^^*
not sure if it uses sms, but dont think so.. ah well got unlimited anyway ^^
Do you have the source patches for these?
I'd like to have more feedback.. Does it work properly for everyone ? Any bugs or FC ?

The patch from ImProvider is here : http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=597
but I couldn't recompile it from source without breaking everything.. I had to patch the apk directly. Maybe you'll do better.
The patch for the IM application is attached, the edited file is in packages/apps/IM/src/com/android/im/service

I don't know how to do that, sorry. But it seems the app already stays in memory for a while. Are you sure it doesn't stay already, if it's not killed by an application manager ?
Sorry if I'm being a noob, but how exactly does one install this? I did
adb push /path/IM.apk /system/app
adb push /path/ImProvider.apk /system/app
and rebooted, and I still get SIM card cannot be read errors. I feel like I'm probably missing a step like installing.

Yea, same here. I guess it doesn't work for users in the States. However, it does work on wifi but once I turn off wifi, it disconnects.
Try installing it from recovery if you didn't, and clear dalvik cache (rm /system/sd/dalvik-cache/* on cm with apps2sd, not sure about others).

Google Maps Voice Navigation was much simpler to set up on a Cyanogen ROM then reading the thread made it seem, so I made a script that follows the same process I did, and though it should work, I have not tested it, so please let me know if it needs any fixes. It will back-up any necessary files to the sdcard, so there are no real worries in giving it a try.
1. Download Google Voice from the market
2. Unzip the file, and make sure the two files, build.trout.prop, and mapsnav.sh are on the root of the sdcard.
3. Open the terminal and enter
Code:
su
sh sdcard/mapsnav.sh
This will do its work then reboot the phone. When it is back up, you should be set.
Doesn't seem to work for me. Upon running the script, I got a few errors ("Google not found," "Cannot locate dalvik-cache on sd," etc.; the phone rebooted before I could get a look at all of them). After the reboot, I still had the same old Maps. I tried installing the APK provided in the zip, which seemed to be a successful install, but still, no navigate feature.

Yupp, 4.2.3.1, or whatever the second-latest one is.
The problem is that your dalvik-cache and maps folders seem to be somewhere other than on my phone. If you first clear your dalvik cache, find the maps folder in /data/data/, and erase it, then run the script, it should work. I will figure this out and post when I get off of work.
I got the "no google found" error.
Also on boot up im missing gmaps all together.
edit: i also forgot to mention while the script was running scoreboard and mixzing forceclosed.. and on boot up advanced launcher foreclosed about 5 times.

I tried messing around with swapping out the contacts but gave up for now. I've replaced my build.prop and build.trout.prop files with the backed up ones and GV is working again. I've read that some people have seen the navigation menu disappear when they do this - it doesn't sound likely, but I'll be watching out for that for the next few days I guess.
So - go back to your prop files and GV and GM will both work, at least for now.
fixed! (I think)

If you're having problems uninstalling, that's because you used an update.zip and it is installed in the system/app folder. You have to use terminal or adb to mount the folder as rw to remove it.
My question, though, is it better than the one from droid? Cuz if not then I don't want to waste my time updating...

Most importantly would be to ask how do you get your system back to normal so you can install updates later.
I know at one time I messed with my prop file to install the Nav at one time. I wonder if that could be a problem. I removed the Facebook app, but it told me it wasn't compatable so I wonder if it that prop file is affecting anything.
Put the original build.trout.prop file back in the /system folder. Deleted the old Sholes/droid version via the market and it installed without a hitch.
It doesn't seem to like a modified prop file.
To me personally it looks just like the droids version except the white bar at the top is fixed.
Heres the line you want to change back.
ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/kila/dream/trout:1.6/DRC83/14721:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
or upload this buid.trout.prop file to your /system folder. Just drop the .txt from the end.
EDIT.
After fighting a bit with the prop file I ended up just reflashing the rom that I originally installed which over wrote the modded prop file. Now I'm back to the orginal file and then I used the APK provided here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5147596&postcount=16
After that I uninstalled it via the market and reinstalled it now I'm back to where I should be.
So you could use that stock prop file, but after 5 or so tries it was sorta mixed results.
