Shutting down/not starting up problem - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey i'm new here and i've looked through the forums but i can't seem to find an answer. So i recently rooted and ran OE. i decided that it was a bit slow for me so i changed to Cyanogen's latest build, i have the latest radio and danger spl. but for some reason my phone will shut down out of no where. then even after pulling the battery literally tens of times my phone wont start up, once or twice it will start up so i usally start it up in recovery mode. i've wiped and re flashed the rom twice now and still the same thing happens. now i think it's the battery. but the battery i have looks fine, and i tried another one and same thing, no start up. do you think it's hardware or software related? and is there anything else i can do? thanks

Have you tried with any other rom's?
I would recommend WesGarner's or Super D's rom's cuz they are more indie
It might just be the rom.

its probably a hardware issue, that or your battery is dying?

i would try flashing another rom, but my phone won't boot. i can plug it in to charge and a red led comes on which is normal, but when trying to power it on, nothing happens.

If your led never changes from red, you should probably get a new battery. Mine doesn't start even when plugged in when the battery is completely dead. I have to let it charge for a minute or two before it will start. It could be that your battery isn't taking any charge at all.
Hmmm, you said in your OP that you tried another battery and had the same problem? I wonder if there is something wrong with the charging thing in your phone? If it happened with two different batteries and two different ROMs, there is something going on.
Does it keep running while plugged in with a different battery?

When i plug it in to the charger, should the led even try to come on, it only blinks red.
The other battery i used was at the tmobile store. so i can't test that. i believed the guy put it on the charger for a second with the new battery in when we were at the store, but still nothing.
I did just call and i'm getting it replaced. i think i'm going to buy a 1400 battery anyways. new battery & new phone. hopefully all shall be well

I'm glad you are getting a new phone and battery. If the battery is dead, it is usually solid red, then it switches to orange, then green when it is charged. What you described sounds like you needed a replacement.

Weird Battery Issue

Ok in short my battery is not charging at all. I have had this kaiser for a month mayb, but the battery for almost a year. I we away for the weekend and forgot my charger so my phone died. I plug into charger and charging light comes on but when i try and turn it on phone boots then dies as it has no power from cable or battery.
Phone is COMPLETELY stock + tf2d.
AT&T Tilt
Any ideas anyone?
I just updated my phone (even tho it has no battery...). So right i went into bootloader and flashed the offical rom, it died at 13% then retarted and finished flashing....idk if it was supposted to do that or not idk. but now it boots and does the samething as if it has no battery...idk what the deal is .
The battery is heating up like its charging...
It remained updating from 13%-100% and didnt die but i dont think it can charge while updating..but after updating when installing it dies as soon as it gets to "clearing storage"
update
i believe i have a mechanical issue now not a battery issue. This is because even tho it says its charging the battery the phone SHOULD be able to boot under power cable only without battery....but it does not....seems i shall be calling at&t....

Nope, HTC phones and most others can't boot just off the power cable with no battery.

If you had read the warnings in the flashing application you'd have seen it says to ensure your battery is charged before flashing. If your battery is flat and the phone turns off during flash (which looks like it has happened here) it leaves you with an incomplete flash and unusable OS, no wonder it crashes randomly. If you have HardSPL you can recover from that, but as you said you're completely stock it might be a lot more problematic.
lol no no my friend you miss understand what im saying.
Trust me i know the warnings of flashing(300+ flashes many failed...happens when making ur own roms), and knowing these i flashed anyways. What i was trying to point out was that it went through the flash all the way even tho during the same amount of time it would have died during booting, the flash was successful but idky.
The phone is not crashing randomly it has no battery power lol. This problem has nothing to do with flashing because before this it was 100% stock...
Are you sure the kaiser can not boot purly off external power? I was almost positive i had done this before.

Is it bricked

I searched and searched. I was reflashing my AT&T tilt on a tmobile net, using the memory card method. I am not exactly sure what i did wrong. I flashed it once tonight and didnt like it even though it worked fine. I flashed it again and when I did the soft reset I think i took the memory card out to soon. Now the phone will not turn on at all. I love this phone, someone please help a brother out
Hard SPL
If I recall correctly, unless you were flashing the SPL, you just need to re-attempt the flash by engaging Hard SPL again.
It's been forever... but I seem to recall that with Hard SPL, you can always recover, unless you are in the middle of re-writing / overwriting SPL.
Erbid
(Tell us you do have Hard SPL installed.)
I cant get the thing to turn on at all I think I have tried every thing. I have flashed twice before without problem. But it just wont turn on now. I guess what im trying to say is I believe hard spl is on it. I ran boot loader from the phone using camera and soft reset. I accomplished the task once already and loaded the newest hyperdragon and didnt like it so about 10 minuts later i did the same thing and tried to install an old dutty one and the phone will not turn on. I loaded every thing and then reset. I think i may have pulled the memory card to early because i dont remember the phone saying it was clearing storage or coming back on. Sorry if this seems longwinded.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but is the battery fully charged? Try charging for a few hours - check that the charge light is on etc. Normally with a bad flash, even if the phone is completely bricked, you will see something try to light up or go brighter on the screen - unless the battery is dead or the screen ribbon disconnected.
It worries me a bit that you 'think' you have hardspl. Either you do or you don't. The process is simple enough to do but has enough steps that you'd definately remember doing it.
Ok, so I think you are sorta right. I put a fully charged bat into the phone but still nothing coming on. Turns out the old battery was dead though. Strange considering it was being charged all day while in the car. phone still wont turn on. anyone know if there is someone who fixes these?

okay the phone isn't turning on but are there any led's lit up? (red, green, orange??) because that indicates there is still life in the phone and recovery is possible. This can be when you turn it on or on charge etc.
Very unlikely you bricked it. More likely a problem with the battery or charger not charging the battery.
When you plug the charger into the phone does a yellow light appear at the top to indicate the unit is charging? If not you have a faulty charger.
Can you get into the BootLoader screen? Try the following:
> Take you battery, sim card (re-lock the cover after taking it out) and storage card out
> make sure all contacts on the battery are clean and replace it
> Hold the camera button in fully and then press the power button for a few seconds (the Bootloader screen should appear)
If the Bootloader screen comes up then read the 2nd line down which starts SPL and report back with the version.
If no Bootloader screen appears then take the Battery out and plug the charging cable into the phone. Then with the battery still taken out, try to get back into the Bootloader screen by holding the camera button in while pressing the power button.
If that gets you into the Bootloader then then problem is with your battery.
If the phone still does not go into the Bootloader screen the problem is most likely with your charger.
thanx, i have since bought another tilt. I put the old battery in the new tilt and it was dead. I put the fresh battery in the old tilt and nothing yet. I didn't try the bootloader yet. I did try charging the phone on the old battery though and no lights what so ever. even with new battery on charger. I will get back to you on the bootloader trick
Bootloader trick didnt work. Thank you though. Looks as if I now have a parts phone that My wife hates me for.

Have you tried the charger from your new tilt in the phone that doesnt work? If you connect the charger then the charging light should come on at the top. If thats not happening but it works on your new tilt then the problem lies in the phone. You can try checking contacts and connections but if you have no life after swapping bits over from your new tilt to the old one then ur pretty much buggered. Can you not send it back as faulty or is it out of warranty?
No warranty. I bought it used. Im on Tmobile. Thank you for everything though. I did try the new charger and got nothing.

Dead

I let my phone battery die, and now I can't turn it on.
Usually I get a red light which goes when the battery is in if its charging.
Sometimes I get a red light even when the battery is in and its charging.
If I do a soft reset, sometimes I get a flashing red light on the sides but then nothing.
I managed to get it back briefly by doing all manner of hard resets and soft resets, and taking the battery out and putting it back in over and over again for about half an hour...
Then I left it charging for half an hour or so and carelessly allowed the battery to die again because I needed to take it with me somewhere - so the same thing has happened again.
I left it charging overnight but I'm not having any luck with it this morning... any help would be much appreciated.
yeah similar problem here. my phone warned me the battery was low... i ignored the warning and used it until it died completely. then it wouldn't turn on. it was late so i just plugged it into the wall charger that came with the phone. i dont think it charged cause in the morning it was still flat. if anything i think having it connected to the charger while not charging drained the last a few drops of juice out of it. had a number of confusing red lights coming up in different spots at different times.
i read on here some guy managed to charge it by getting 3 AA batteries and connecting them directly to the battery for a couple of minuets. i did this and managed to turn the phone on! hoooray!
it had 1% and died in less than a couple of minuets even though i had it on the charger. tried the 3 AA battery trick again but to no avail. i think my battery is dead.
i'm pretty certain i will need to get a new one. i hope you are able to get yours working without buying a new battery.
im really annoyed the Sony Erricson batteries work out to be close to $100 AU. i would prefer to get a legit one... but does anyone have any experience with unofficial batteries? are they any good?
Sorry you're in the same boat... Ericsson really should have made this phone so that it can run out of battery.
Interesting - tell me more about the 3 AA battery trick!
sounds like the cells in your battery isnt balancing hence its dying...think you'll need to buy another one / or at least try another one to make sure it is and not the phone...
Hmmm... I fiddled and pressed buttons and took out the charger and put it in, and then kept pressing the on button while I was doing something else...
Suddenly it made the click noise, but it's not back yet.
It seems to have crashed on the 'Sony Ericsson' start up screen with the green logo.
I don't know if it's charging or not, so I'm not sure whether to turn it off to try again (at the risk of losing the battery), or leave it to charge as it is before I turn it off and can't start it again....
At least it's progress
There are a couple vof threads with many solutions. Look for them, they are very useful.
Yeah I've found a few - Thanks... just nothing they mentioned has worked yet
I think the problem I have may be a slightly different now anyway...
Now, if I unplug it I can't turn it on, but if it's plugged into my computer cable I can get it (every time - after about 3 minutes) to go to the Sony Ericsson loading screen but no further (as if there is no hard reset file for it to load). I can do that by plugging it in, then doing a soft reset (which produces flashing lights on the side) then holding on until it clicks (usually trying that a few times). When it clicks the lights on the side flash and it looks like it charges for a second before the lights go off and its just hte loading screen. I left it for 5 minutes and it turned off completely. Nothing happens if it's plugged into the wall cable at all.
Have you any idea how I might be able be get something to load after the loading screen?... Or any thoughts as to whether you think it's likely to be charging when its on that screen?
Thanks
Hmm... It seems you have a software problem as well.
Here is what I would do: get another battery (fully charged) and try one of these hard reset methods:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437607
Something should work...
Sweet - I managed to get the hard reset screen to ask me the question about going back to factory defaults... after that the lights on the side are coming on to show its charging....
I guess there's a chance that when the battery is charged it'll have the juice to get past the loading screen... I hope anyway.
Wow this title gave me a heart attack almost
i thought someone is dead
plz i need help
hello good day plz i neesd to flash my htc p3600 and sony ericcson cybershot i need a software i can use to flash them plz help me any body that has an idea
just ordered a 1800mAh mugen power replacement battery. should be here in about a week my old SE k800i will be getting a bit of a work out in the mean time.

Phone got hot, died and wont come on. Revolt 1.5

Last night I went through the process of flashing Revolt 1.5 onto my phone. Whiel at work I was playing with the phone setting my pages and such back up. After a bit my phone started to get hot and the battery drained pretty rapidly. I didn't have a charger with me soe phone was dead for a little while, now when I plug it in I get no LED and it wont turn on at all. Tried charging it for over 30min on a wall charger.
Does it turn on without the battery? Just the charger plugged in?
Nope, I found a thread that said to plug it in with no battery for a while then put the battery back in. It is starting to warm right now.
Phone was still under warranty. They are swapping it out and gave me a new battery. With the new battery I got it to boot up so I am going to try a full recalibration of the battery to see if that stops the heat issue it still seems to be happening, either way new body for the phone is on its way.

Had this happen on my original motorola droid... required a new battery. Also I learned the hard way always wipe data and cache a few times when upgrading roms...even if you are just coming from an old version. Had the same discharge problem/hot phone when updating from 1.4 to 1.5... also noticed under phone build still showed 1.4 lol... Did a few wipes of data/cache then reinstalled 1.5 and havent had any problems for about a week.

How to unbrick a "dead" Milestone.

After an unfortunate rooting session with my Motorola Milestone, the phone now returns into an "dead" mode. It refuses to start at all. I tried charging it and see if it starts by itself, but it doesn't budge and the little while led doesn't lit. The only time when it lit is when I connect it to the PC. I tried putting in it a new battery, taking out the SD card and SIM, but to no avail. I remember seeing a video where a guy used a dissected USB cable to spark the phone into turning on again, so I take it I'll have to use a "hardware approach"? Please help.
I tried following this guide, though without success. The phone still has that white LED lit when it's connected to the PC.
After a reply on this thread I also made, it might be possible that the battery is charged, but the phone refuses to boot at all. Is there any way to unbrick the phone in this state?
Do you think your device is really BRICKED?
If so, you can try to flash your original sbf file into your phone. Guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696845
If you are using a Linux, google for "sbf_flash".
I agree with my front floor..ermm, u dont need to worry about its 'dead'. just flash original sbf can rescure your phone.
I had the same problem too, but good news is I tried to revive my phone successfully recently, btw your phone is not 'dead', it's just staying in limbo state, the solution is to pull out the battery and don't connect to any usb, don't try to power it up, it must be completely out of power wait about 12 hours, and then try to power your phone, I think there is some capacitors in the phone which retain the phone state, to make it out of power will wipe out it's state, good luck

"My phone is in limbo state... "
That's a pretty cool statement.
From technical view, it might have happened that something caused a kind of deadloop when reading scratchpad SRAM inside OMAP processor.
This SRAM, as well as the internal RTC is powered by a small battery soldered on the mainboard, while the phone is shut down and the battery is taken out.
What you did was, to wait untill this battery became uncharged.
All SRAM and RTC setting as well then gets erased.
Afterwards the CPU will start up with empty scratch SRAM, might be called a "real" cold boot
Normally the phone should not behave like this. Even if SRAM is not valid the phone should boot up...
...but anyway as you observed it like this, it might happen.
@andoruB:
Apart from that, the Milestone is hard to brick in general.
Might happen though, if you do evil things while flashing new firmware.
Especially while flashing bootloaders...
If you got some more information about the things you did, would be helpful!
Good luck anyway!

how did u root it? can u give a more detailed description? and hows ur phone? sometimes, the milestone would just shut off and wont come up if the battery is gone. Try charging it for maybe 2-3 hours, untouched, and see what happens.
Have this exact problem. Was doing a nandroid recover when the phone got stuck. Pulled the battery out. Placed it back in, pressed the power button. Nothing.
Led lights up only when connected to the computer's USB. Battery was charged before Nandroid recover. Used nandroid a lot of times but for some reason, my stone stopped playing nice.
I just removed the battery. Hoping this works. Can someone please post if you got this same issue resolved? I like this phone no matter how slow it goes sometimes. Thanks!
I completely forgot about this thread, sorry guys!
I don't remember exactly what happened, it's been so long... but I do remember I left the phone "inactive" (it's not like i had much of a choice! XD ) for 1 or 2 months, with the battery out. After I got hold of a wall charger, I plugged in the battery, after I plugged in the charger, and what do you know? It worked! It started charging (was 60% charged, fully charged, I unplugged it, but after putting it to charge again just to make sure it was fully loaded before I would flash a new ROM, it was charged up to about 80%, weirdly, so I guess it was a weird battery problem)
I do remember I didn't do anything to it, so I'm not sure what to tell you guys to do, except leave out the battery for a month or so ^^;
