Rogers HTC Dream on AT&T - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone,
I just got a Rogers HTC Dream from Canada to use on AT&T's network here in the states. So far it seems to be working smoothly, I just had to unlock the phone and setup the APN for AT&T. My phone is the 32B version and I'm wondering which Radio I should be using.
Is there anything I should pay attention to when I decide to change the rom to something 2.x?

Yes! But it depends on which radio you've installed. If you install the 2.22.19.26I radio you can install any standard Dream ROM. However, if you keep the original 3.22.20.17 radio (or the updated 3.22.26.17 one), you will need a kernel special adapted for the 3.x radio.
Look inside any Dream ROM you download and you'll find a file called "boot.img" - this is the kernel. You can find a really good thread dedicated to the differences between the two radios and why they require separate kernels here.
It's a little more difficult to get ROMs to work with the 3.x radio, but in my experience it's worth it. I can subjectively say that my signal has been much better ever since I returned to the original radio. Be careful about switching between them, however, since I hear it's not too difficult to brick your phone that way.

I am having really poor reception so I am willing to try out the 3.x radio. Thanks for the advice.

Urgent advice on what to do

Hi,
I've flashed my Vario with the Qtek update that has Exchange push. The thing is have I done the right thing, I just unlocked it and CID and then flashed it.
Having read the forums a bit it seems i should have preserved the T-Mobile radio update somehow and whatever else? How can I do this and also can someone direct me to the last release of the T-Mobile update as they have withdrawn it from the Website but if I just need the radio out of the ROM then it should not be a problem.
Please advise!!!
i dont understand why you need radio from t-bomile
I read that it has a newer radio version. From reading what other people have done it seems they've used the Qtek ROM but kept other aspects using a thing called aWizard which i havent.
You can run just about any ROM/Radio ROM mixture you want. I’m not sure what you’re worried about? Are you actually experiencing a problem? You didn’t mention that the device was running abnormally. If you have read of others using a diff Radio ROM it’s not because that’s what you’re “supposed” to do but rather others feeling that they get better results by using diff versions.
For instance, I have the latest test ROM on my 9100 and the radio signal was crap with the 1.13.x radio ROM so I downgraded to the previous qtek version. Then just for ****s & giggles I loaded the latest Cingular radio ROM and have found that this combination works best for me. My service is through Tmobile and I have not had a problem running any ROM or radio ROM just some work better than others FOR ME. It’s up to you to decide which combination you like best.
Hope that helps.
I like that... I need to remember this one "for ****s and giggles".

Rogers Canada Xperia Radio

anyone know where i might be about to get new radio rom from the new xperia from rogers?
maybe then ill get the signal strength my buddi gets on rogers
does anyone even know what version of the new rogers radios?
Thanks in advance!!!
I Would also like to request this for the same reason.
i know the rogers R3AA010 is out there. i just hope maybe the radio is too.
ive been tempted to go into rogers and say my phone stoped workin, can i exchange it for a new one please. (untill they noticed its silver)
i noticed that the x1a's are rogers are all black also.. not silver like the original, but im not sure if u can get it in either colour.
Rogers default ROM comes with the 1.14 version if i'm not mistaken... just look for the 1.16 radio thread and flash that radio, and use the rilphone.dll patch...
You might also want to check the sticky-ed super thread that lists all roms and radios.. that'd be a good place to start..
The radio ROM doesn't have to be Rogers specific...
Make sure your phone is HardSPL'ed first...
And yes, all Rogers X1a's are black
ive gone threw the 1.10, 1.11's on the 1.14 (had the 1.16 didnt like it)
some places ill get full 3g, then some other places i barely get edge.
i just thought it would be nice if rogers had their own radio verson to fine tune the signal.
Mobile providers don't customize radio ROMs unless they make special requests of the factory.
For the factory, keeping their production as simple and uniform as possible keeps costs low. They will customize things as long as it is simple and makes business sense. The OS is relatively customizable, and takes little effort, so they can do backgrounds, default in programs, etc. quite easily. The radio requires a lot more detailed work to rewrite the code so they generally won't do it unless there is a compelling reason.
Providers usually only test at their own labs to see if the performance falls between specific parameters, and then approve the handset for use on their network. They don't have teams of people re-writing firmware due to cost, intellectual property, skill set, and other issues.
So really there is no "tweaking". You're stuck with the design of phone's hardware and software as far as reception goes.
Thanks lazyjai,
that does make sence.
i guess ill just have to wait till the next radio comes out.
I've found that with the Rogers ROM that I now have flashed on my X1a, i never get a connection drop while downloading e-mails or going on Windows Live Messenger.
All the other X1i-based cooked ROM's that people are posting on here are useless for me And I mean practically ALL of them. No North American with an X1a can use any of these custom ROM's on here because there's a radio configuration problem which causes frequent disconnection at random yet recurring intervals.

Please let me know on your results because this will determine if i will get the phone or not. If i cant flash any roms on the x1 then this will suck big time.
ill have to admit, i flashed the rogers rom, not a pretty lookin thing, but i do get a better signal then i did before. so i guess im stuck with win 6.1 again
i got so used to titanium, now im back to basics :S.
ide say give the rogers rom a try, u just might like it too
This is an old thread but who knows, someone might still need this info:
Grab a rogers rilphone.dll and stick it in your phone in the windows folder. I put instructions directly below. Radio 1.14 and the rogers rilphone.dll on any of the roms I've downloaded works great. Without the rogers rilphone.dll I've noticed many problems, not just related to caller id either (lost calls and things like that).
Instructions:
1. Grab rogers rilphone.dll (might have to flash the rogers rom and copy it off).
-It's in the windows folder off root, copy it to your computer
2. Burn new rom
3. Burn 1.14 radio
4. Copy rogers rilphone.dll into windows folder on the phone
-Rename it first, I use rilphone_rogers.dll
5. Open a registry editor and go to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Drivers/BuiltIn/RIL/Dll
-Change 'rilphone.dll' to whatever you named the rogers one (no '')
6. Reboot the phone
Good to go.
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general
Well I have been using custom roms on my x1 for a while and have always flashed the radio and used the rilphone.dll. I found 1.16 to be the best for me in Ottawa, montreal and winnipeg.

flashing a custom rom to gsm/cdma hybrid?

Hi guys, im new here, and trying to navigate around here is very difficult when you don't know all the technical terms (being a noob sucks).
I have an Unlocked Sprint TP2, that appears to be a CDMA/GSM hybrid. ive been googling for roms but from what i have heard, there is no custom roms avaliable yet for a CDMA/GSM Sprint hybrid and i really dont want to mess up my phone. Its unlocked from America (i live in Australia) and the stock from is fine but i would much prefer a custom rom, though one that it is equally stable and fast. I have heard Mighty's Roms are of the kind im looking for yet i dont know if they're avaliable for my phone specifically.
This is my first time flashing a rom and i need information. To my understanding i believe i require:
1. a softspl to flash the hardspl
2. a hardspl to flash the rom
3. and of course the rom itself.
Any help you guys can give me would be much appreciated!
Actually, the CDMA Worldphones (including the Sprint model) have many custom ROMs available. Since XDA-Developers is primarily a GSM forum, not many ROMs exist here. Rather, you should try the more CDMA oriented PPCGeeks. This PPCGeeks subforum contains different ROMs, and the HardSPL unlocker for the Worldphone Rhodium models (RHOD400 & RHOD500).
And all you need to do to install HardSPL is download it from one of the stickies (from the link I provided) and run the file you download while your phone is plugged in, so you don't even need to worry about manually using an SSPL. After you do that, you can simply install any ROM (from the link I provided) by connecting your device to your computer and running the CustomRUU.exe file usually included with ROMs you download (don't use the CustomRUU that comes with the HardSPL package). Alternatively, you can install a ROM by renaming the NBH file to RHODIMG.NBH, putting it on your phone's SD card, and manually entering the booloaded (press [volume down] and power at the same time while the device is powered off).
The "hybrid" CDMA/GSM phones just need a CDMA ROM. Don't flash a GSM ROM, it won't work. But a CDMA ROM will be fine, as Dave has said.
Check out the Rhodium CDMA sub-forum here too.

I didn't know such a thing existed! Will your phone work on GSM networks (like Vodafone UK)? And does it have a 3.5mm earphone jack?
I know it's off-topic would appreciate any reply ... thanks ...

Yes, that's the idea. It has a SIM card slot that you can use when you want to use it on GSM. I have no idea about the jack though.

[Q] Fido 3G internet loss - which RADIO/MOD will help me

Hello,
I'm having some difficulties figuring out which update route I have to go with so I don't brick this baby.
I'm currently on Fido, and about once/week (usually on Mondays) I loose my 3G. I have to call these guys and get them to reset my internet connection. It then comes back. I am assuming this is crap that's coming from the parent network - rogers. Of curse CSRs are not trained, and they don't know anything about the waiver, nor signing the waiver, and then when I try to sign the waiver online it doesnt recognize my IMEI.
My goal is to update to a version that will (hopefully) fix this, and if I can get new CyanogenMod while at it, then why not. I would like to get the newest stable version. Priority is to fix the 3G dropping, so If I have to go for older CyanongenMod then let it be. Having said that, please tell me what my best route is .
This phone was previously on rogers. It says "Rogers" on the back, but this is not a standard out of the box rogers phone setup. My understanding is the previous owner has rooted it.
ADP1
Radio: 2.22.19.26I
RA-dream-v1.6.2
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
Also my current kernel version: 2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37 android-build @ apa26 #19
I read all the wikis and Im still confused on the kernel part.
If you have a genuine ADP1, then you MOST DEFINITELY DO NOT get 3G on robbers. I guarantee it -- totally impossible.
If you mean that you are losing your DATA connection (from 2G/EDGE), then I believe you.
I don't know where exactly you live, but if you live in OTTAWA, TORONTO, EDMONTON, CALGARY, VANCOUVER, or WHISTLER, then I STRONGLY suggest that you ditch robbers *IMMEDIATELY* and switch to Wind/Globalive.
1) $40/month (if you sign up by 24th of this month) for UNLIMITED calling to anywhere in Canada OR USA, and UNLIMITED DATA, with NO time of day or other insane restrictions,
2) A genuine ADP1 ***IS*** compatible with 3G on Wind,
3) No contracts,
4) Aren't you completely sick of those buggers yet?
5) According to an investigation by the COMPETITION BUREAU (that resulted in a multi-million dollar penalty being levied against robbers), everything that robbers has ever said about the quality of Wind's network ***IS A LIE***. Wind actually has a HIGHER quality of service than Robbers. FEWER dropped calls.
6) You ***ARE*** allowed to tether... specifically, they actually say so.
7) Last, but not least, Wind doesn't play IMEI and/or RADIO VERSION games with you.
So hopefully, you live under Wind coverage. I switched a year ago, and couldn't be happier.
You have two choices here sign the waiver and keep a 2.xx radio or flash a 3.xx radio. I would recommend the first choice if you can do it because the 2.xx radios are more stable. The 3.xx radios would lock up randomly for me. The waiver wouldn't work for me either. I had to call them (Rogers) and get a technician to enter it manually. Also, the latest 2.xx radios give you more ram and make your phone much faster.

If you really can't get that to work see this guide. It may be out of date so let me know if you have any questions.

It says "Rogers" on the back of the phone so it obviously isn't an ADP1. The custom ROM probably says that because that was the phone it was originally meant for.

beav_35 - are you a Fido or Rogers customer?
The big questions is - how do I get Rogers to do this for me? They tell me they cannot escalate to level 2 because I am not a Rogers customer.
Where as fido doesn't have a waiver online or anything, and they just tell me "Sorry, this is not a Fido phone, so we cannot guarantee compatibility, just keep calling once a week to do your network refresh"
I'm a Rogers customer.
I guess your only choice is to flash the radio that they want. See the guide I linked to before.
Just so its clear the process should go something like this:
1) from fastboot flash 3.22.26.17 radio then a "R" recovery
2) reboot into recovery and flash your ROM and kernel port

So I should flash one of the CM's? I was thinking of following this "Upgrade_Rogers_Dream_Radio" guide (I cant post a link, just google) but then it tells me that a Prerequisite is CM 4.2 and that part confuses me.
I originally wrote that guide but some people have changed it around and added that. I think it is trying to say that you can't use a ROM that doesn't have an EBI1 kernel available for it. What ROM you have doesn't make a difference for flashing the radio. You just need to have a kernel for your radio before you can use your phone (flash a kernel port ontop of your current ROM or a new ROM). Make sure you always do a wipe before flashing a new ROM.

[Q] [SOLVED!] Rogers HTC Dream, change over to EBI0--clear up some misinformation

My phone is missing calls and texts, and about every 3 hours the phone part stops working. I've seen a bunch of comments from Rogers users that say their data goes down, and I've heard it's due to the radio. I think my phone goes down as well because on Telus, they don't have a GSM network so both data and voice/text is going through the 850/1900. I *think* that's what UMTS means; I could be mistaken.
So, after a lot of research, I think what I want to do is install a 2.xx radio on my phone, which means going from EBI1 to EBI0. MY QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. Does going EBI1 -> EBI0 by changing the radio to 2.22.23.02 change the radio frequencies? As in, will I still be able to connect to TELUS or is it going to change it to the 1700/2100 range? My research tells me NO but I wanted to double-check.
2. Am I going to lose 15MB of ram by making the switch?
3. I don't know what the correct sequence of stuff to make the switch is. From what I can tell, I've been told to use fastboot ONLY to do this switch:
a. Nandroid backup through amon-ra 1.7.0R
b. Flash 2.22.23.02 through amon-ra
c. Flash amon-ra 1.7.0 non-R verson
d. Install (e.g.) Cyanogen 6.1 again, but don't do the EBI1 kernel this time.
Reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6136326
Does that all look correct?
4. Maybe I can just go with this exact sequence?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
Can I use my current SPL to do the flashing or should I start by changing over?
I've got a Rogers HTC Dream, running the latest Cyanogen 6.1, unlocked on TELUS' UMTS/HSDPA network (850/1900). From the FASTBOOT screen:
DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-3.22.26.17
Apro 20 2009,15:30:43
Thanks, from a clueless android newbie!
P.S. I think (?) this is my first post here, at least on the android side of the fence, so hi all!
So I took the plunge and did this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
Of course, learning the following:
1. Careful means I don't brick my phone;
2. I was GAINING ~10MB of ram, not losing it, and
3. If I still get disconnects, it's either faulty hardware or TELUS' fault at this point.
Thanks for a great forum!
I am convinced it is the hardware. I had a magic at first with no connection problems, I traded someone for a Dream and have nothing but issues. Frustrating...

Um.. can't say for your phone.. but most people have 3g issues with 3.22.26.17 ... 3.22.20.17 and 2.22.28.25 are usually fine.. (well rogers policy of terminating your data plan aside on the theory it fixes the e911 bug in rogers original firmare [has nothing to do with the radio version its just what they use to check you have upgraded, actual bug was in the android java code].. but op left them for telus who will advise the customer update to a firmware w/o the bug.. but isn't checking what is installed on the end user's 3rd party phone)
I'm just not sure how well e911 works if you use 3g with 3.22.26.17 and lost network without the phone knowing.. at the very least it must take a long while to connect as it re-establishes the connection.. but as htc/rogers has not fixed it they are either not getting complaints, blaming it on the old version. Or everyone using it is stuck on 2g anyway since they want inbound calls to work.. thus bypassing the e911 part of the issue.. but making rogers "fast network" look very slow.I
Wow what a coincidence, I was going to post in this thread your Offical AOSP 2.2 rom because it is what i've been using for the past week with zero issues. I have decent 3g now with no disconnections!
