SD card problems looking for input for replacement - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every time I unmount my sd card I get an exclamation in the top bar saying it is damaged.
I am looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139121
It's a class 10
or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211379
It's a class 6

class 10 won't do anything. your phone can't read above 6 really

Thanks that's what i needed to know then.

I had that same problem, then I reformatted the card and everything was fine. You might want to try totally reformatting (data, ext, and swap partitions too if you use these). If you tried already, never mind, but you may save some money by reformatting... I did and it's going strong.

Yeah I tryed reformatting but the problem remains. Ordered the class 6 card.
I believe my current card is only a class 2. It came with an rd4 card for my kids ds so I'm guessing it is not very high quailty.

I was going to suggest getting a sandisk class 6 but nvm. haha mine is super fast.

Got the new card and I get the same error. Is this then a problem with my phone? Rebooting gets rid of the SD card damaged error. But it always comes back after mounting. Happens on various roms so I don't believe it is a rom error.

maybe time for tmobile to look at giving you a new phone?

Maybe, but you'd have to revert to stock and verify that the problem still exists.

All I have to do is run dreaming and let it update correct?
If it is broken I'll probably have to wait till I can buy a new phone this one is my primary internet. As of right now it's an annoyance more than anything.

It has gotten worse so I bought a nexus on Ebay. When I unmount now it does not see any files on the sd card.

Card reader won't read SD card

I searched but only found people having trouble mounting their cards. Ever since I partitioned my 8 gig class 6 card, my computer won't recognize the FAT32 partition. It reads it when I mount in with my G1, but I'd really like to be able to use it with the card reader again. Has anyone else had this problem?

here's the scoop some sdcard readers do not read the high capacity cards well.
i have 2 pc's with sdcard readers one cant read any class 4 or 6 devices after formatting to fat32 my other which is newer read all cards no matter what parttion is on it. if you have the 1 gig card that came with the g1 that will work fine for flashing devices.
Format your card. That should fix your issue. Be sure and copy what folders you can, to back up.

that's kinda a hard one since the sdcard reader won't read the card and formatting through android still causes the issue it's the sdcard reader i've had this issue and using a different reader fixed it.

Ah, good to hear! I thought it was just one partition that was missing. I had one really bad issue with a corupted sd card that won't read. The sd reader was good but claimed the card was not there. After reinserting and clicking quick format about 50 times, the pc finally recognized the dead card and formated it. After that, no major issues since. This was with my old HTC Wizard. Old mini sd card. I love the micros but are kinda hard to handle (literally) and mobile phones have finally settled on one format (used to be a combo of mini and full size sd and the occasional micro (newer) ). Plus, brand name matters somewhat... sansdisk is pretty good. Pny is also pretty good for a cheaper brand. Class also matters now which is kind of odd but makes sense. Kind of like hard drive read/write speed. Tech is always changing and you can get left in the dust after 6 month of no research. Fun though... will always be my hobby and my job foremost. Sorry for long-winded reply... lol

Major sd card problem. We need to fix this.

Well I recently ran into an SD card problem. To find a solution I have searched many forums and Google. None have offered any solution. On my search for answers I have found at least 100+ G1 owners with the same problem. All posting within the last month. The error we are getting is "SD card removed. insert new sd card".
All threads I have come across have suggested to reformat the sd card, repartition, use ADB, cyans recovery image, to fix this problem. None of the above solutions have worked. A majority of the threads the G1 owners were still able to use there sd card with there pc.
Now I know this is in the right section. We need a developer to figure this out. A g1 without a sd card is like a g1 that is bricked. It is horrible not being able to download, play music, shoot pictures, ect.
i ran into this issue on a friends g1. came to find out he dropped it and the sd card would neved get seated correctly in the sd slot. i had to wiggle it a bit before the phone recognized it
Now we are getting some where. This solution didn't help me but might help others in the future when they use the search feature.
I had this problem on one of the roms I was using, maybe Dude's cupcake?
Wipe of the phone fixed it.
I have whiped and upgraded to new roms. My problem began when I entered a command into terminal to fix another problem. After that I whiped and updated to cyans.
I have experienced this 1 time only. When it happened to me, I removed it from the phone completely and checked it in my card reader. It picked up on the PC just fine and everything was still intact, so I knew the card was still good. I rebooted the phone without it and then shut down. Reinserted the card in the phone and booted into recovery. I ran the fix partitions thing and rebooted again. Problem solved. I personally haven't had any other problems since then. I was told on another forum as well that when you flash a new rom or even a new theme to run the partition fix included with cyans recovery. Something to do with apps2sd I think? I have just gotten into that habit and no more issues. Good luck.
I think I might have changed a path on my phone while in terminal and thats what is causing my problem. I can't get cyans recovery because my phone isn't reading the sdcard for me to install it. Also, good post I am sure your solution will help many!

Same for me. With Dude's it wouldn't read my SD card. Wiped, installed Cyanogen's ROM, wiped again, and the problem instantly went away.
Have you tried another SD card in the device? One that you know is good and working in another unit. I screwed up one of my older smaller cards trying to make a Goldcard. It has never worked since.
I tried that a few days ago. No luck there. Im glad were getting this thread going. So far I see a lot of good solutions. Best part about this is all the information is all in one place! If anyone has any input please do tell.
Do you have another card to test out? Have you tried to mount/unmount the card with the phone on? I know if a rom has built in apps2sd the unmount/format option is grayed out. Maybe try to take the card out with the phone on and reboot and then put it back in? Not sure what all to try. I know I was frustrated when mine was doing that as well.
This would happen to me all the time with the camera. I would take two or three photos, then I'd get a message that I need to insert an SD card.
I think the problem was the card. I was using a Patriot 4GB Class 6 card from Fry's. I switched to a Transcend 8GB Class 6 card and have not had any problems since.
It sucks having to buy a new card if you already have one, but $18 for a good quality 8gb card is pretty reasonable.
I have class6 card that does this.. I also have other card that don't .. in the case with my class 6 card it works fine untill I use it for apps to sd, wich in my case renders it useless..
It's word cuz it will load everything fine and run, but then freez up in the middle of use. That's when I know it unmounted itself. Then I'm forced to pull battary out or reboot.. I have truer every methed to fix it with no luck...
Mine is a 4gb c6 card and other than the 1 time, I've had no further problems. I have run A2SD for quite a while even before it was included with different roms.
First comment: Why is this in this section.
Most of these I've seen have been mechanical (poor card seating) - poor card contacts. Swapping the card has always removed the issue for me.
I've had 2 cheaper sd cards go bad. they looked like they worked fine when i put them in a card reader and plugged into a linux box -- but only at first glance.
further inspection revealed bad sectors and damage to the storage. Since i got a nice class 6, it has seemed fine -- i think you get what you pay for a lot of times.
Not to be crass, but this does not belong in this section of the board. Just because one seeks the expertise of developer, doesn't make it ok to post a thread in this forum.
My $.02
I agree, I also think it was cards that were just made bad I guess that's what I get for buying a cheap class 6 transcend from target lol..
Bad SD Card Slot
This happened to me to a week ago after flashing a new Rom, thought I do not think that the flashing had anything to do with it. I tried everything wiggling it , cleaning connection, reformatting. The card worked in other phones and computer but mine. I just think it went bad. Nevertheless after 5 days of getting no where I had T-Mobile send me a replacement

I should add that I also tried 2 new card as well both class 6
this is in the right section. If you havent noticed this a spread problem among many. We have tried other Sd cards. They do not work. This is a internal problem. Thats why its in the developers section. This post will save others from having to post about this same issues if they can find all the answers here. That being said if you have a problem with it maybe you should explain to me why brick threads, ect are ok in this section? There is nothing wrong with my sd card. Just like there isnt anything wrong with the other 5 sd cards I tried.
Google this you will find a lot of people having the same problem.

SD Card Corruption with Nexus One (has happened twice)

Twice in the last two months my 16 GB Class 6 AData microSDHC memory card has popped up as being "corrupt" and needed reformatting after powering back up from reboot on my Nexus One.
The first time happened on CM 5.0.3.1, the second time was with CM 5.0.4.1 with the UV kernel. Both times, data could not be read either through the N1, my old G1, or my friend's Droid. Thus a reformat was required and data loss ensued.
Anyone else experiencing occasional data corruption on their SD card? Another friend had it happen to his G1 with an 8 GB microSDHC memory card recently, running the latest CM for the G1, also on reboot and battery swap.
Is there a common thread here? Could it be HTC hardware-related? CM software-related? Just coincidentally two bad memory cards? Me using chinese replacement batteries when swapping out? The UV kernel? Not trying to point fingers or throw stones, just trying to get to the bottom of this...just lost some great pics of a recent vacation I just got back from. Suggestions or hints are welcome!
TIA!
this has happened to me a few times but I was still able to get my data through amon-ra recovery. I think it have something to do with an improper dismount of the card.
I'm curious, what brand of memory were your friends using?
I actually had this happen when my n1 was still stock (16gb class6 card)
I put the sd card in a card reader on my pc, everything was intact so I backed it up, reformatted and still had the n1 report it was corrupt. I ended up having to shut down, remove card, boot up w/o a sd card in, then with the sd card back in I never had the problem again
I know I did a full format the very first time, that 2nd time I had done a quick format. I've done a format recently also via amonra for ext partition and still no problems.
I happend to me few weeks ago. After turned it on ... I couldn't do anything because the screen was black and any key or type of touch was useful ... so I removed the battery and at the next start the SD wasn't readable anymore!
sry 4 my bad english!
erikikaz:
i'm running a 16 GD Class 6 AData memcard in my N1, my friend is running an 8 GB class 6 SanDisk memcard in his G1. Neither of us is running Apps2SD or anything weird.
glad to see i'm not the only one with this issue. was gonna buy a new 16 GB card but saw an article yesterday that sandisk is coming out with a 32 GB class 6 sdhc card in a month so i'll just wait for that one.
Same here
Same thing has happened three times on my Sandisk 16gb. I am running stock everything on nexus..nothing funky app wise.
After the first time it happened I replaced the sd card. It still happens. I have never been able to fix the card other than reformating. Chkdsk /f on win7 gets to 98% then throws an i/o error.
There is something majorly wrong. It seems that it happens in all android phones from time to time not just the nexus one. The consensus online seems to be that it is a mount/dismount issue that corrupts the card. I never mounted or dismounted the card at all with PC and it still happens so not sure what else it could be.
Do you think it is a phone hardware issue that would resolve with a new handset?
Has this ever happened to anybody using the standard 4GB card?
Where did you purchase your micro SD cards? There are a lot of fake/faulty cards being sold. I bought a fake one (unknowingly, obviously) and it kept getting corrupted until I tested it properly using h2testw.
I have the same problem on my nexus! I use an LG 16GB Card and CyanogenMod-5.0.5.3-N1! Any way of recovering the data without amon-ra?

roman

+1 Make sure you dismount from computer first...otherwise this problem will pop up again...and may not be correctable next time. (There's a reason why the phone asks you to properly dismount from computer first)
no **** my n1 has the error message damaged sd card. restarted the phone a couple times and same message. what should i do? i see peoples solutions on this thread but idk where to start. i have a rooted n1 running cyan 5053 with apps2sd
I have had this problem a couple of times too, the latest being this morning
I have a stock N1 with a 16GB Sandisk card. The first time this happened, i went to use the camera and it said insert SD card, even though there was one there, I rebooted the phone and then got the Damaged SD card message.
This morning I was on the train, had been using the phone to read the news earlier with no problems, I got it out of my pocket and screen was black. and the phone completely unresponsive. Removed and replaced battery, booted up and got the Damaged sd card message again.
Both times I have been able to recover most of my files by putting the card in a PC, the first time I found that a couple of my photos were corrupted and unrecoverable, indicating that possibly it was the camera app that may have caused the issue the first time.
This time though, I found that some of my music tracks were corrupted along with one of my videos, and also a directory on the SD called LOST.DIR. Everything else was fine.
Not sure why only these files were affected, as I was not listening to music or watching any videos, so I dont see why the nexus one should have been accessing those parts of the card when it corrupted.
I could not delete the corrupted files, even on my PC, accessing them causes the PC to lock up. The only way to get card working again seems to be a format.
If only the format would work!
Regards,
Roman
Just happened to me as well. Genuine 8gb Sandisk, class 4.
After a reboot Nexus reports corrupted card. It really seems corrupted, I'm unable to read it in a PC or anything else:
[ 1042.673542] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 1042.673551] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
[ 1042.673561] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error
[ 1042.673571] end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 10248
I'm using CM 5.0.4.1 with UV kernel.
It's happened to me, even using the "safely remove hardware" function on the pc. i started just using the unmount on the phone which seemed less problematic.
Yep...add me to the list. Running stock N1 was playing music when it ocurred it started skipping through the tracks fast right before it stopped. It has affected/removed all my pics and left the music.
I'm with you all:
2 times on my Motorola Milestone, using a 16GB class 4 "unbranded" card
3 times on my Nexus, using that same 16GB class 4 card.
2 times on my Nexus, with a 16GB class 6 SanDisk card.
Most times, the data has been available by mounting the card into a PC or Mac directly, though my Mac has seen the card as "read-only" in these cases.
I seem to have this problem after mounting the card onto my work PC, though I don't often do that. I mostly use ADB to copy files. Maybe it is linked to leaving the debugging interface up all the time? I do that and I'm sure that most of you do as well...
Me too
I am using FRF91 MRCr21 and I am on a 800mv 070810 .35 rc4 kernel. Newest 5.00.08.04 radio.
Twice now after using quickboot my phone has reported my SD card damaged and it says I will have to reformat. It is a 8gb class 2 sandisk, real. One time I used quickboot to enter recovery mode and the other was only to reboot the phone. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the best fix? Both times I rebooted my phone was stable. I wasn't downloading or installing anything. Thanks!
My phone can't read the card. If I pull the card and put it directly in my computer it won't read either. Both OS can't read the file system and want me to reformat.
Neither happened due to not dismounting. Anyone correlate the problem with quickboot?
have had zero luck with adata 16GB classs 6 cards. i have gone through 2 of them however their 8 GB card has been awesome
Just had this with a Sandisk 16GB Class 2 card. Inserted into card reader, copied something, popped it back into the phone, corrupt card message. Even the computer says I have to format it.

SD card read failure

Every so often I get an error saying the sd card is corrupt or not working or something, and photos or music on the card will not open. After a hard reset, it works fine. Is this common? The card is basically brand new but I suppose it could be that.
So I am having a lot of things acting weird. Apps not working, sd card failure... I need to do a hard reset about once a day now. It is becoming a little frustrating. Any suggestions?
So I opened up the sd and sim tray, took out the cards and put them back in. Seemed to fix the problem for a number of days. This morning I had the failure again and I opened the tray and I noticed that the SD was a little off... does anyone else have this problem? Of the card moving around? Any idea how to fix it?
I may just have a bad sd card, now that I think about it.
Thank you because now i know i am not the only one with this problem!

Hey actually I got a new sd card and it has ZERO problems now. Taking the card in and out was only a temperary fix. i think the real problem was a bad chip. I had the PNY 128gb one ($30) and now I am using the SanDisk 128gb one ($40). I would only buy SanDisk from now on.

Unlucky many people have the same problem and no, your sd card is good... there is something wrong with the hardware or software of the huwawei..
I'm having the same problem with my Huawei P9 lite, both the phone and the SD card Kingston32GB are new, i even bought another SD card because i thought the first one was bad, but the problem persist. I haven't found a solution yet.
I have the same problem. I do not think it is specific to the card. I think the card is dislodged and moves around in the card tray and thus gives the issues.
I wanted to but a new card as well, but think this will not solve the issues. I will try sticking the card in the slot somehow to see if that solves things....
I've had my P9 Lite for a month now, and I've only started getting the SD Card corrupt error since last night. Unmounting, and mounting it again fixed it briefly, but then I got the error again while trying to take a photo about an hour ago. I've just formatted the SD card to see if it will fix the problem. I'm hoping for the best.
Have any of you fixed the issue successfully?
I get this when I copy a large files to the microSD card, movies for example (1080P FLAC 4GB each or something). It still works fine though.

Just an update: My SD card gave in completely last night! :crying: It worked fine after formatting, without any errors, until it just stopped working, so I lost a few days of pictures. Anyway, the SD card isn't even being read in my laptop, so it's definitely a goner. I'm currently using a different memory card, to make sure that the same doesn't happen to that one, to make sure it's not my device corrupting the cards.

Sounds a lot like my issues.
After having the phone P9 lite for about half a year, i'm on my second sd card.
2 weeks ago, i had the message it was bad once or twice, but now my phone is acting weird. A few apps (Twitter, netflix, pokemon go) will just start and close instantly sometimes. Apps will just crash. And everytime i reboot my phone, all that has happened after the 6th of July is nowhere to be found on my SD card.
It took me a few days to realize I might have some problems.
But reading this thread i might invest in a new sd card before doing a factory reset.
Problem is from bad quality sd card not from the phone, exactly like u are connect usb flash to your computer,if sometimes u have problem with the usb flash ,u should blame the usb flash not your computer.your phone is just a reader, try to buy good quality sd card

Did the same thing happen to your first SD card? I actually only started getting the issue when I updated to Nougat. I noticed that when I reboot my phone, just before it switches off, I see the notification that the SD card was removed abruptly, so I think it could have something to do with the software that doesn't safely eject the SD card before the device restarts or shuts down. I might be wrong though, but it's just a theory. I don't restart my device too often, but when I sometimes insert my SD card into my card reader, I get a prompt to say my SD has errors, and needs to be scanned.

I had a Kingston one, something i consider good quality.
But you make a valid point and i'm currently looking around for a new one.
It seems that for now my problems are solved by an old one i had lying around.
Saw SanDisk being promoted.

No, it behaved quite differently. That escalated from one of two error messages in a week to multiple errors daily.
And it was really corrupted, couldn't format it on the pc or anything.
But how is your current card behaving? All is well?

I had a 32GB (Class 4) Kingston SD card as well, which is one of the brands Huawei recommends to do software updates with. I had that card for 4 years, if I remember correctly, and I've used it with 3 devices, including my P9 Lite, which was the only device it gave problems in (only after updating to Nougat).
At the moment it's still behaving. I got a 32GB Class 10 Sandisk a week or two after my previous post, and so far it's fine. Like I said earlier, when I put my SD card into my card reader, I get an error message to scan my SD card, which means my device doesn't eject my card correctly, before rebooting. I still believe it is either an issue with Nougat, or EMUI 5.0. Again, this is my theory, according to my personal experience.

For me the problem also seems to be solved in the mean time with a new sd card.
Don't know if i like your theory though, since it would mean it is just a matter of time.
On the other hand, google does not show that many complaints......
Time will tell I guess.

On the other hand, google does not show that many complaints......
Time will tell I guess.

I don't like my theory either, lol, but today when I was taking photos, I tried viewing the photos within the camera app, but it took a while to load them, and my gallery app stopped responding. I'm hoping it doesn't have anything to do with the SD card though, but I can't help being sceptical.

I changed from Samsung to Sandisk, yesterday after os update same thing. Took out the card, apps default to internal storage and works. Reseller is no help say it's virus. I am sorry I gave up my Samsung edge. May be should have bought iPhone if only working wit internal storage.
I have an expensive SanDisk card and it's worked fine for over a year, just started happening to me too now though...

System properties not responding. SD card Missing! Had happened 3 times.

Here's the story and info.
I got the Blu R1 HD (prime special) went down to Target and bought thier DANE 64GB CL10 MicroSD for $20. Plugged it in and formatted it as internal storage. (A cautionary not then said, "if formatted as internal memory SD card will ONLY work in this device) I chose, who cares and continued.
Worked great for a day or two ... but then it happened ... it went missing! All the apps and data was gone. A notification popped up and said, "Transcendent SD card missing. reinsert this device". I did as the all knowing phone asked but to no avail, it wouldn't recognize it.
I rebooted the phone and a massage popped up saying "system properties not responding. Wait or Quit" I've tried both options, doesn't seem to make a difference.
I tried reformatting it in the phone and it wouldn't unmount. Tried on our computers (both pc and Mac) and neither computers were allowed access to the sd card to reformat it.
I then returned the sd card thinking that it might be flawed, got another one from Target and it worked great ... for about two weeks... Then went missing.
Did everything mentioned above. Got the new one and it worked for 4 weeks, thought my problems were over ... then the SD card ran away again and is now currently missing. The phone does not recognize that there is a sd card when looking for it in a file explorer. In settings it says the sd card is corrupted.
Is my phone messed up? I'd it the brand of SD card? Is there a way to make the phone recognize the sd card?
Please help me find my missing sd card.
Same problem, SD Card is showing as corrupted. I have it installed as internal storage and have for over a month with no problems. SD is a Patriot LX 64gb. I haven't changed anything on the phone. I have not fine anything but reseat the SD. Any help is massively appreciated!
Maybe the problem is using a 64GB MicroSD Card. The phone specs say it's supports up to 32GB only.

That is incorrect it supports 64GB SD, many report success with 128GB cards, so I doubt its an issue with size...

Is good to know I'm not the only one!
Have you been able to reformat the sd card? Or will it not allow you to do so?

I have not tried, I'm clinging to hope I might be able to salvage my pictures.

Okay I caved and tried to reformat it, and all it does is fail, or drops off half-way as though I had removed the card. If I try to put the card in my computer or any other device it just straight doesn't exist, doesn't even say it isn't compatible or anything, just straight doesn't exist. Think the card is just bad, gonna return it and get a new one, will see what happens.
I have had a SANDISK Micro SDXC UHS-1 64GB CARD in mine for almost 5 months now and no issues.
I see I'm not the only one with this issue, although mine is a little different... I got a generic 128gb card and plugged it in, has been issue free for months... BUT, lately and for what seems like no apparent reason, the card guess missing... Rebooting the phone sees the card again with all apps and photos intact. It could be weeks/days/hours/minutes before it happens again... Shortest turn around - about 10 minutes. Longest - about 2 weeks... Haven't tried plugging the card directly into my computer yet, but when it is mounted on the phone it works fine (until it goes missing). Thought maybe it was because it was a cheap card...
