Newbie Stuck on RC29 - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

uys, I had Cyanogen 4.2.14.1 build on my G1 before, and I tried to install a theme on it, but maybe i installed wrong theme that was not compatible with the build on my G1.
After the installation, my G1 stuck on boot screen and i had to pull off the battery...
So I kept googling and found that i can fix my G1 with Dreaimg-RC29. And my G1 fixed now and it works properly, but... I just stuck here on RC-29 and Gmail log in page, I have a Gmail account, but i just can't log in since i can't connect to any internet connection. I can't install any applications on my G1 until I successfully log in to the Gmail.
So the questions is:
-Can I activate Wifi on this state?? If so, how??
-Can I install Recovery Image on this state?? (because on Cyanogen 4.2.14.1 I can skip the Gmail log in and turn on the WIFI first)
Thanks, please help if anyone knows the solution. Sorry for the bad english

there isnt a way to install a recovery image at this state. as far as connecting to the internet i have no clue, does your phone not have a service plan?
and how did you do it before?

New problem
Oh okay, I figured this out, I just did some things with the APN settings..
But, now i can't install the flash recovery on my G1, it's weird because I did it the same way before.
After I download the flashrec.apk and tried to install it, it keeps on "Application install unsuccessfull"
Any clue to solve this one??
I tried to install it with Application Manager, Application Installer, it just won't do it...
Help please. Thanks

Have you tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
If you don't have root copy the recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img to your sd card then
1. After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
2. Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
3. If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
4. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
* cat recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img > /system/recovery.img
This is what I've done when having to revert back to rc29. Hope it helps.

I'm trying that one.
Reboot my G1, press enter twice, input telnetd, press enter again, and nothing happens??
What should happens exactly??
I downloaded the Telnet apps, but I just don't know how to configure the localhost, can you explain it to me??
Thank's anyway

Sorry, Lord, or Michaelo, or anyone that understands this problem, can I just add your MSN or any messenger, so i can ask directly and clearly?

Did you type in the enter button twice then "telnetd" with the quotes from the home screen it runs a script in the background that you won't see if I remember right. Half asleep so if you still need help when I get up I'll try to help more.

Yeah, i got my phone rooted, i thought it will appears some response after telnetd typing.
Sorry to bother you, now i have rooted G1, but I can't get into Recovery, when I press and hold Home+Power button, it appears to be red green white color screen, I think you call this "Boot Loader"??
So I just can't go to recovery.
Thank you so much really appreciate the answers.

OK so you are rooted did you download the recovery from the link i posted? if so then in the telnet app
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
* cat recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img > /system/recovery.img
after you shut down hold the home key and power up you should be in ra's recovery manager if not well I guess i do need sleep lol

Yeaah...! Finally It's running on Cyanogen!
I was following instructions from the XDA developers forum before and didn't put the correct directory when flashing Recovery Flasher from telnet...
Thanks Lordvip...
Phew... what a tiring day...
Going to sleep too...
Thank you, thread can be closed and problem solved...

Glad you got up and running

"Superuser Permissions" freezing (JF 1.51)

Hi all,
Whenever I go to use a program for the first time that requires root, my screen goes black and processes start freezing. Eventually, a box comes up saying that the "Activity SU Request" process has frozen.
Any idea what's causing it (could it be the amount of apps i've installed?) and/or how to remedy it?
EDIT: found this:
@Androidandy the easiest way to get it working seems to be:
turn on your phone by holding the home+end(power) key
press alt+x to enter the recovery console and then press enter when it asks you
next type:
mount data
rm /data/data/com.koushikdutta.superuser/databases/superuser.sqlite
if you have the problem where it says this file does not exist, type:
rm /data/data/koushikdutta.superuser/databases/superuser.sqlite

Sorry for asking without looking completely thoroughly first, a mod can close this thread if they like.

Or...... dear lord, why.... you could just go to Settings>Applications>Development and enable "USB debugging". It's a known problem with the current SuperUser.apk
Usb debugging simply isn't working with my stupid windows computer, and I'm too lazy to boot it into linux. I found out the hard way that the recovery console doesn't work on my phone, I must have forgotten to update the phone somehow. I was fiddling with all the key combinations, conveniently forgetting alt + w = wipe.
Managed to get an old backup working, and the SU popup is working again.

My G1 is stuffed, but not bricked. Mount from Recovery? Wave invites for help.

Ok. So yesterday night I was trying to give my G1 a new ROM. I wasn't really concentrating. I was tired. I've done it successfully before. I was following the instructions on Cyanogen Wiki for phones already with custom SPL and OTA.
Something screwed up, I did the firstROM a while ago so it probably wasn't the right one. Maybe it needed deathspl.
Regardless, it is now stuck on the T-Mobile G1 screen (and its stuck, I've left it for an entire night: still stuck) . I can take out the battery and boot into recovery mode. So at this point I basically need to mount my SD through USB (i dont have adapter) so I can start from scratch with SPLs, Radios and Images. This is the problem.
I've read you can do it by pressing Alt+X, going into console/terminal and type some commands in. I press Alt+X but nothing happens. I'll tell you what happens when I do other things:
---------
Alt+S= E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (Invalid argument)
Can't mount sdcard
Alt+A= <<same thing except for last line:>> E:Can't mount SDCARD:

Apply sdcard:update.zip: Can't mount sdcard
Apply sdcard:choose zip: E: CAn't mount SDCARD:

Nandroid v2.2 backup: Can't mount sdcard
Nandroid v2.2 restore: Can't mount sdcard, aborting.
Format SD : fat32+ext2+swap: Format complete!
Format SD : fat32: Format complete
Repair ext filesystem: Error : run e2fsck via adb!
Convert ext2 to ext3: Error : run upgrade_fs via adb!
Fix package uid mismatches: Error : run fix_permissions via adb!
-----------
Alrighty. So its royally stuffed up.
Please help! I'm telling myself its not bricked, because it has small but definite programs and calculations running.
It mentions adb, and I have used it in the past to skip through a tutorial (back when you couldn't skip through it) because it needed internet connection and at the time I didnt have data transfer on my SIM, but I did have Wireless. How exactly I did this escapes. Do I need to download anything?
I have no idea if this helps, but I was trying to think of a sort of prize for anybody to help and I have Google Wave invites. Whether thats a big deal or not, I have no idea.
Please help!
Well you can assure yourself that you are not bricked.
First check your SPL and Radio.
If they are:
SPL=1.33.2005
Radio=2.26.19.26I
then your good in that area.
you just need to wipe everything and retry the ROM.
If not then you might want to get the latest stuff and try again that way.
Thanks
Thanks.
But how do I check?
I can't get into the proper Android OS, the three states my phone can be in are:
Off
Stuck on T-Mobile Screen
Recovery Mode
Also, how can I get some new stuff on my SD card if I the only things I have are: the phone described above (i.e. the only workable state being recovery mode), an SD card and a USB cable.
Whats your email so I can send you an invite if you want it?

To see you SPL and Radio do this:
Turn off phone
Hold Home and End Call buttons.
If you see:
Hboot-1.33.2005 or something like that then that means that you have the latest SPL
Radio-2.22.19.26I then you have the latest Radio too.
First we need to check to see what your SPL and radio is before you try to do anything that involves flashing ROMs
What recovery image do you have?
Can't see it
When I press Home + End Call I can see is:
Android System Recovery:
<the options I described before, with their errors>
The above is in green font, the background is black with an HTC logo, at the very bottom is white font that says this:
Build: RAv1.2.1G
Sorry for not replying as fast as could. I mega-ly appreciate this so I'll try to be more vigilant.
I'll look around for other key combos to get some more info.

Well thats atleast one step we've bypassed. Stay with me here.
Alrighty so I know the Radio and SPL, and apparently they are up to date.
What next?
From your above post, it seems your SDcard is not being read by your phone. Not sure what the issue is there.
But, if you can get it recognized by the phone, try the following:
It seems you have ADB set up, you may be in luck.
Connect the USB cable in recovery and type these commands on cmd prompt in Windows:
adb shell
ums_enable
This should mount your phone to your PC.
You can now move in necessary files to save your phone.
I suggest doing a FULL WIPE, then reflashing a ROM such as CM 4.2.14.1 (latest build).
If that doesn't work, you may have to start over by flashing DREAIMG.nbh (RC29), flashing latest radio, flashing SPL, DON'T REBOOT, then flashing rom RIGHT AFTER SPL.
Good luck, keep us updated.
Nearly There
Ok. So I got adb up and running.
I ran adb devices and it was blank so I followed part 2 of:
<do google search for "the unlockr hot to set up adb usb drivers for android devices>
After reinstalling drivers via USBDeview:
My Device Manager is now registering my phone as the Android Composite ADB Interface, but when I run adb devices it still has a blank list.
Keep in mind I am in recovery mode.
When I try and run adb shell, it errors with 'no device found' so I need to do this devices command successfully.
Does anybody know whats happening?

Try running it while the Phone is on instead of recovery.
Say run terminal and post the output of:
cat /proc/cmdline
By the way you can still flash images using fastboot mode.
Its stuck
When you say 'on' do you mean on the T-Mobile Screen?
Thanks
Thanks again guys this is really good and I think we're getting close. OK. Here's an update as of right now:
My computer recognizes my phone in T-Mobile Logo, Fastboot (or thing with three skating Androids, Home and Back), and Recovery.
When I cd to my tools folder I can run adb commands but when I run 'adb devices' it shows:
List of devices attached
....
No serial number or anything. I've reinstalled the drivers.
When I do the command 'run terminal' it says 'run' is not recognized as an internal or external command blah blah
This is the same with 'cat /proc/cmdline'
I still can't run terminal with Alt+X in recovery mode (at least, nothing happens)
My phone cannot turn 'on'. It is stuck on the T-Mobile Screen.
What should I do?

Normal boot.
That doesn't work.
How can I see it in adb devices?
Argh!
Any ideas just throw them out there.
Have you tried another sdcard? That's the first thing I would try if the phone is complaining about not being able to read it.
Check ur drivers.
sounds like u need to update them.
Try the attachment

[HOW TO] Remove ads using adfree android

This was created when we didn't have S-OFF yet.
If you have S-OFF or /system overlay script you won't need to go through all the steps simply download adfree android.
I know most of you will be able to do this. But I believe that it might not be as easy for the beginners. So here is a little walk through.
!NEEDs ROOT!
1. Download Adfree Android
2. Wait for it to determine local hosts then click on download and install hosts.
Now it will try to replace /system/etc/hosts but fail (it should reboot the phone but it didn't reboot mine)
4. go to adb and reboot your phone into recovery (with power on+volume down OR the command: "adb reboot recovery")
5. Open up the recovery-windows (start recovery-windows (make sure your in the right directory))
6. mount your system and sdcard you might be able to just use mount and mount everything but I've mounted them serperatly.
Here's how: "adb shell mount /system" next "adb shell mount /sdcard"
7. Now we're going to put it in the etc directory where it should be: "adb shell cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc"
8. reboot the phone ("adb reboot")
That should remove most of the adds.
I know it's explained on a really low level of knowledge but I wanted to make it accessible for all of you.
Only the needed codes:
Code:
1. adb reboot recovery
2. start recovery-windows
3. adb shell mount /system
4. adb shell mount /sdcard
5. adb shell cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc
6. adb reboot
has it the option to only block browser ads? when I tried it time ago it couldn't. I don't like to block the app ads
No it removes the adds everywhere. It simply blocks the links to adds. it doesn't actually remove them. they are still being called but they just don't show up.
Hi,
I have this very same problem for a long time now, with the constant reboots etc.
Followed your steps, but after the reboot, as soon as I press the button to update the hostfile, it reboots my phone
Thanks anyway...

Do you have root access?
Have you checked if the hosts file is at the root of your SD?
A good guide, if a little misplaced, but another option is the /system overlay.

Ok it's not perfect because app continue to reboot the phone after updating the hosts file ,

Things seems to have worked for me without that portion. Many thanks, I will now change my review in the market for that app from one star to three stars. If they include a note describing this problem upfront I may bump it up further.
It could simply be called start recovery (depending on where you got your rooting tools)(if you've got the from The Unlockr you'll need the -windows)
If you have S-OFF or if you use an /system overlay script these steps aren't needed. (It was created when we didn't have S-OFF for our legends yet.)
Anyone having problems with adfree scripts on Legend since Froyo update? Neve had a problem witha rooted 2.1, but have lots of problems since rooted Froyo 2.2
It seems HTC may have some service which is checking for modifications to symlinks etc.
When I run adfree in my S-off CM7, i get an java.io.EOFException.
Someone else having this?
I had some problems at first, but reinstalling adfree android from market seemed to help. No problem now with CM7 (01/03 from ali ba) and s-off.
adfree no block ads!
Hi,
i install the adfree on my legend with 2.2 with sense.
i did download the host from the app all work ok got a message say it was success install and need to restart the phone.
i did it but still get all the ad like before on all apps.
pls help!
Have you followed the steps? (explained in first post)
Note that you should have a rooted legend (if you don't know what that is then you don't have one)

[Q] Need help with my semi-broken NC - what did I do wrong?

I have sucessfully rooted my nook and I can load apks from dropbox, installers or via adb so I am a happy camper, all is good....
But I got greedy. The ComicViewer doesn't work well without menu keys so I decided to install softkeys.apk and that is where the trouble started, something is amiss.
I am not an expert here, just a novice, so forgive my patchwork explanation.
Here's what I know and what I did, maybe someone can spot my error?
I can fully access adb.
I remember installing SuperUser and SU using the commands:
# adb shell
# cd /system/bin
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
# cat /data/local/su > su
# chmod 6755 su
# ls -l su
And all was fine, SuperUser shows up in the drawer. Then I tried installing SoftKeys and it never showed up or worked.
So I figured I fubared the SuperUser install somehow or have an old version of SU or SuperUser. So I downloaded the most recent versions and went to uninstall the original with uninstall utilities and it's not listed in any of them, so I tried using adb (adb shell ls /data/app) and it's still not in the list.
I even reset the Nook to factory and rooted again with nooter and when I tried to install SuperUser again (downloaded the latest version here on the forum) it said "Install Failed already exists!"
So I cannot uninstall the SuperUser or overwrite it with a newer version, and a factory reset doesn't fix it??
I cannot use any root utilities like SuperUser or z4root, SuperUser has all blank screens and I cannot update it and 4zroot just doesn't seem to do anything but reboot the nook.
Titanium Backup says I don't have root access and other utilities say the same thing,
I can mount system partition as read-write
> adb shell
# mount -o remount rw /system
# exit
That works...
So I tried the commands again to install SuperUser and SU and when I try to install SU
# cd /system/bin
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
are OK but when I do:
# cat /data/local/su > su
I get:
Cannot create su: remote access failed
I have also tried a few other things that seem to be available to root users and all come back with write or access errors.
What could I be doing wrong?
Note: I also tried to do a full wipe by using that Power and Volume Down and nothing happens...
Power the nook on and off immediately 8 times until it does a full factory reset. When I've done the Power+VolUp+Nook button reset it doesn't always seem to do a FULL reset. When the nook fails to boot 8 times it does a different reset that takes a good deal longer and (at least in my experience) seems to be the real deal.
z4root will work and install superuser for you.

I have already mentioned that that did not work, but thanks for the suggestion anyway.
Ok, something VERY weird is going on.
I have reset it to factory twice
Each time I did it by powering on and off 8 times in a row
The first time after it indicated it was updating th software, it went into a stuck at NookColor Logo boot loop again.
The second time I left in the nooter microSD card and it booted properly.
But it booted to a "clean" system with all my programs.
All my settings and data was gone, but all my apks were still installed.
So what exactly did it reset? Just data?
I tried to get it to flash both ways, the quick (power/home/volume) and now twice with the 8 power cycles. Neither reset the Nook entirely.
Am I screwed?
I want to go back to factory to fix this thing
EDIT:
Looks like I am locked out of the system entirely, none of my apps work, some of them come back and say no write access.
I cannot do an app listing like:
adb shell ls /data/app
I get:
opendir failed, Permission denied
I can't do a simple mount
mount -o remount rw /system
I get:
mount: operation not permitted
This should help you with what type of reset you want to do. I think you should do another 8 power on/off reset followed by a power-up-home reset to get it fully reset.

Well that's a bummer! Maybe something went wrong in one of the resets. Did they seem to complete? If it's not a hardware problem you should still be able to revive it via nooter. I would suggest PMing pokey9000 and see if he can walk you through a recovery. You might be the first near brick that requires running some of the recovery commands by hand. I think Pokey9000 knows the most about that.

Whatever you do make sure the battery is getting charged somehow.. Try to leave it plugged into the wall or in a usb. Does the computer see the device when plugged in? HAve you tried to remove the SD card from the NC while powering up?

Yep tried all those things...very frustrating afternoon so far
However...I did get it to boot.. here is how:
Press and hold the power button while inserting the USB charger connected to a computer, continue to hold (I think it was 10 seconds or so).
I remember doing this to reset a device a long time ago, not sure what.
But it worked, not only that but I was able to do a pwer/up/home rest and this time it completely wiped the nook. It looks like I am back to factory!
YES!!
Thanks for alll the help and suggestions guys. Hopefully this struggle will help someone else in the future.

OK. This time around, do this:
(1) nooter
(2) use ADB to enable Non-Market Apps
(3) use ADB to enable multitouch
(4) Use ADB to push z4root over to the NC
(5) Run z4root and do a full-root (whatever is NOT the "temp" option)
(6) Use ADB to install Astro
(7) Use ADB or Astro to install a market
(8) Install the rest of your apps however you choose.

I did 1,2,3,6,7,8 and in place of 4/5 I used the most recent version of SU and SuperUser and all is good on my Nook! Not sure what happened before but it must have been a bad version of su or superuser. In any case, all seems fine, only Titanium doesn't work, all the rest of the root requesting apps work fine.
Thanks!

Keyboard Issue's, how to solve them!

Hi Guys,
This is driving me crazy. A lot of people, who are too lazy to search. Well, here you go.
Allright, you brought your Xperia X1 with android. Now, there is a problem. Once in a while, the keyboard does not respond, only action is a reboot. HELP?
Allright, lets get started.
Download this package:
http://www.mediafire.com/?cp1o1glxjo145pu
Install a android of your choice(just normally).
Unpack, and copy all (yes, all) contents to you SD card.
Move the turbo or Monster kernal to the NKBoot Map, click yes to replace any excisting files.
On your computer, open up the readme, and read it carefully.
After step 4(after you entered 'su') type this:
rm /lib/modules* -rf
That will remove your current modules, and at the next boot, they will be replaced.
Reboot, and proceed with step 5 and the rest. Follow the guide excactly, then you're good!
Have a nice evening!
Not Test, But Thanks You !!!! I Need
sorry to say but when i folled your guide to just after step 4 when typing the -rf
it says cannot remove read only file system
is that normal?
thanks
yes it is. just reboot after the error, then the new modules will install!
Just thinking ... a dev might know it this is possible ...
Hm, perhaps, best solution at the moment would be, to run the unload-load-script when the phone is waking up from sleep mode. So, when keypad is lost, the user can send to sleep with the power button an immediately switch it on again ... and additionally, the script can run when a call comes in ... don't know if these events can get picked up and the event-handlers can be changed, just thinking ...
Ciao

Don't know if this could be a good option. Because I have had some freezes when runing the script. And sometimes the screen changes it orientation.

Shouldn't it be?:
After step 4(after you entered 'su') type this:
rm /lib/modules/* -rf
mind the /
Anyway, I tried both ways, and rm /lib/modules/* -rf seems to work, but I can't load back into CWM if I install a kernel with seperate keyboard modules. I think I mess up the exact order of installing normal, removing modules, replacing kernel, restarting. Hope this will work

Yes. I can restart keyboard after freeze. Although with eggy monster kernel, my screen is rotated 90degrees after that.
No. I can't get back into CWM, after I switched to a kernel with seperate modules.
The original kernels of Honeycomb v3 both worked.
I tried the kernels with seperate modules of this post and i tried the ygge kernels.
Can this be solved? No. But apparently, there is a workaround http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072387.
when I type "sh /data/opt/autostart.sh" and press Enter, I get this error:
"insmod: can't read '/lib/modiles/microp-ksc.ko': no such file or directory
insmod: can't read '/lib/modiles/microp-keypad.ko': no such file or directory"
Can you help me?.
Where is kovsky keyboard modules????
I using ygge kernels with HoneyComb Froyo V.3
PS: sorry I used the same post in several threads
