ringtones/notifications from SD card - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i had a few ringtones/notification tones "mp3s" that used to work on my rooted G1 and my rooted MyTouch. I picked up the Nexus one the other day rooted and now i want to put a notification from the SD card in gmail and a ringtone from my SD card. The problem is when i go to settings, then sound and display, then phone ring tone or notification ring tone the tones are not there. also going into gmail and trying from there to no dice. the music player can play these tones and i can see them from Astro file manager. any ideas?
Nexus one rooted
cyanogen 5.0.4.1-N1
amon-ra 1.6.2
radio 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2

Don't know if it keeps it in the list, but in your music player, go to the song you want to make a ringtone and longpress on it and when the menu popup comes up select "set as phone ringtone". Hope it helps!

yeah i tried that for the ring tones as a workaround but still cant get a tones in gmail. but thanks for the suggestion.

Well, notifications are in /system/media/audio/notifications I do believe, you're rooted, through the mp3 in there?

i tried doing that in astro file manager but when i go to drop the files in there the paste and or move is grayed out. i check in terminal if i infact have root and i can SU

on my SD card, i created an audio folder (parent) and subfolders (children) for alarms, notifications & ringtones, placed my tones in the respective folders, rebooted the phone and they appeared in the selection lists.

yup same here but they dont appear in the list, but music player sees them weird

Ok i figured it out, so for what its worth the folders and subfolders have to start with a capital letter. i just renamed my "audio" and "notifications" folder on my SD card to "Audio" and "Notifications" rebooted and they now appear in the drop down list.
Now i wonder why i cant write in system/media/audio/notifications folder, in astro file manager all the edit menu options are grayed out.

Rings Extended for Hero

Hey guys, I'm having a little problem with this app. So I tried to open an mp3 file to set it as my default ringtone but Rings Extended is not one of the choices that appears on the list. I'm using Linda File Manager.
if you use linda to create the right folders on the storage card and enable sd card notifications you can choose an mp3 stored in there.
I found tone picker a better app than rings extended.

300KB limit on ringtones

Out of the box, the Aria limits ringtones to 300k, forcing you to tirm them down. By moving to MixZing (free on the market) you can have ringtones without having to trim them. I use a few for individual contacts, and once you tell the phone you want this file as a ringtone, you can then assgn it to any contact you have on the phone.
Or....you can use something on your computer to slice up the mp3 (audacity) and just put it on your SD card with no limit. I have several on my phone that are .6 - .8 mb.
If you put them on the SD card be sure to store them in a folder named ringtones so that they show up.
If you want new sounds for text messages put them in a folder called notifications.
Looks like AT&T might be turning off this limitation.

[Q] message ringtone

Hey there u all.
I have the following problem ,how can i put an imported ringtone in the incomming sms alerts .
I have got them on the , sd card but can't get them attachet to sms.
Yo need to create the following Directory on the SD card...
Media\audio\Notifications
Then copy your tone into that DIR and it will appear as an option within the notifications options
Note: it will also appear in your music player, to avoid this, you need root access and root explorer or similar, then copy your tone to...
System\media\audio\notifications
play the music file in Music Player then Menu Key -> Set As
or Install Handcent SMS, then you'll notice that when you go to Sound and Display settings -> Voice Call/Video Call/Notification Ring tone there will be a "Select Music" option, you can then browse for music files in your system..

[Q] Adding Ringtones.

I've tried to add additional ringtones from an SD Card. When I add them through the menu in sounds settings for Phone Ringtones, there seems to be a limit on how many I can add. Any ideas?
Make a folder on the root of your SD card titled "media" in that folder create 2 new folders name "notifications" and "ringtones"
Place the mp3 ringtones in the folder you want it in and they will show in each specific type you put it in. I have over 150+ ringtones in my ringtone folder.
Thanks.
Thank you. I had them in a folder titles My Ringtones from the WM folder of the previous phone. Works now.

Hi, I am having a different issue with ringtones. I have created two folders on the SD card called “Ringtones” and “notifications” and copied mp3’s there. I was then able to set the ringtone (default as well as custom for different contacts) and message notifications. Everything worked fine until I connected the phone to the PC and set the USB mode to HardDrive. Once I did that all the ringtones and notifications reverted back to default. I am guessing this happened because the phone is unable to access SD card while it is in the HD mode. So I created the same folders in the root of the phone and moved the mp3’s there. Now when I connect the phone to the PC and set it to HD mode, all the individual ringtones for different contact are kept but the main ringtone and message notification is still being reset.
Can anyone suggest what else I can try?
Thank you.

[Q] How do i get this ONE notification mp3 to register?!?!?!

I have 2 folders on my MicroSD card, one is labeled "ringtones" and the other is labeled "notifications".
I cut and pasted a 0:02 second notification tone from the ringtones folder to the notifications folder.
Now when I try to change the notification tone for SMS and WhatsApp, it wont detect that 0:02 second notification tone. Under system settings --> sound --> notification sound it doesn't detect it either!!
What am i doing wrong? I placed it in the correct folder. It is mp3 file just like the other notification files. There seems to be no logic in this. It just chooses not to show up.
Help?
Googling my problem before making this topic doesn't help. Nobody seems to have had this problem on any Android phone before.
I tried restarting my phone, didn't work.
*update* - I redownload the notification sound, renamed it, and put it in the notifications folder. NOW both files show up on my phone and I can change it to that notification tone FINALLY. This is truly bizarre. If anyone can explain what happened go ahead.
i too am encountering this issue as well, where after adding the .mp3 in these folders it hasnt showed up in the list.
i think this is due to 'media scan', as it hasnt triggered to rescan the library.
and apparently after shut down or reboot it still doesnt help.
anyone know how to 'force' re-scan of the media library?
