G1 issues... - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a couple of questions...
First, I've had the Cyanogenmod loaded on my G1 for a while, and for the most part, I love it. Many thanks to the developers! However, a few weeks ago it started acting up. Apps have been mysteriously disappearing, I'm unable to install new apps and app updates, it takes 20+ minutes to boot up and it's become noticeably slower. I want to just wipe and reload CM, but I've been unemployed for a little while now and haven't had the money to pay my bill, so T-Mobile has cut my line off until I pay up. I can still use it to connect to the internet over wifi, obviously, but I have no connection over a data line. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that after reloading, the phone must connect over a data line in order to register with Google upon first use, and without doing that, I can't use the phone. If that's the case, reloading CM would make my phone useless, right? If I can't register with Google, I don't receive email, and really can't use the thing. I still get a lot of use out of it, even though I cant text or call because I just moved to a place that I'm not familiar with and use the Google Nav a lot. Plus, I can connect to the internet still using wifi, and I have a bunch of games I like to play. So am I better off just waiting til I get a job and pay my bill, or would I be able to use wifi for that initial registration with Google?
Also, assuming I can reload, am able to install new apps again and can still use the phone, are there any free VOIP apps out there that I could use to make calls over my wifi connection until I get my bill paid up?
By the way, to the moderators, I'm new here, so if this is in the wrong section or anything, feel to move it.
Thanks!

ATT, tethering and download limits

Hello all,
First of all I am new here and to hacking phones. Plenty of experience hacking everything else though. lol
I am a real estate agent. Finally, the ATT HTC Tilt is a device that will meet my needs! I do not want to pay for the tethering plan. The basic 20MB/$30 per month data plan may or may not be enough for me so I need some advice. For $10 more, I may just get the $40 unlimited PDA deal which does not include tethering.
1st - All I will need the device for is emails and checking the MLS websites. I can get an idea of my email amount but what is an average web page?
2nd - I know I can tether without paying them for it and I plan on doing so. I am not going to download huge files. I would just like to connect my laptop, cruise the Multiple Listing Service website and be able to show clients the data on a nice big laptop screen. Do you think that would send ATT any red flags?
3rd - If I use some of the hacks/ROMs here to get rid of the ATT garbage (as I have read this is a smart thing to do) will it effect my ability to tether?
Occasionally I may have to download a a 5 or 10 MB PDF form. Normally, I would already have that on my laptop ahead of time though.
Thanks for your opinions and guidance. I know some of these questions have been addressed but I just wanted to confirm this for my situation since I will be leaving Verizon for ATT and buying a new phone and cannot afford to screw up. lol
By the way, this website rocks!!! A true treasure!
1. Average website is about 2KB to 100KB, depending on the number of images. Things like flash animations, videos, sound, or very large images will make pages much bigger.
2. Make sure your bandwidth usage is not huge, and it will not set off any red flags, there is no way for them to know you are tethering besides guessing based on your bandwidth usage. With the $40 PDA plan, the "limit" is already pretty high, so you don't have much to worry about.
3. Won't affect you ability to tether, as long as the ROM you chose still has the internet sharing software still on it. The stock HTC ROM does have it, but some of the "light" ROMs may not. Many people actually seem to like the stock AT&T ROM, after tweaking it. Consider these tweaks instead of reflashing, as reflashing will void your warantee.

Jozer is totally correct, DO NOT FLASH it, just tweak it. The AT&T ROM is fine after you stop the bloatware install. To do that, when you first get the device and boot it up you will have to go thru the normal OS prompts (time, screen alignemnt, password, etc) then you will see a dialog that says that it will customer the device in 3 seconds. Reboot the device before the 3 seconds are up and none ofthe bloatware will be installed.
Then, just tweak away will all the cool cabs here on this site (of course, I mean the cabs for the Kaiser).
WOW...good stuff and made crystal clear too. Thanks so much guys. I would like to just tweak as you both recommend since I have enough headaches and don't want to get radical in the first few months of a new plan any way.lol
Does anyone recommend dealing with ATT directly or can I find a better deal online without customer service headaches if help is needed down the road? I have never bought from online, I always went directly to the store.
I have seen some good prices on the http://www.letstalk.com/product/browse.htm?pgId=100 website.

Using Push Internet

I just got my TD2 yesterday. Been trying to figure out the settings for the push internet, but i can't seem to find the option to use WiFi connection instead of data connection.
Also i realised that the scheduling doesnt allow to set the minute only the hour.
Does anyone have this problem?
No one has any problem using this feature?
If you have WiFi on it should just use it I guess? Otherwise what you can do is setup your preferred connection not to be the mobile web one so it doesn't try and connect to the net over GPRS/3G.
I tried using Wifi, but it doesnt work. I still need to manually pull the sites.
When your phone goes into standby the WIFI connection turns off to save the battery, so unless you have your phone set to never turn off and keep WIFI active all the time its unlikely that it will use WIFI to push internet pages to you. Very little point doing it that way since you'd never have the phone last long enough to get out of the house in the morning.
Oh I reckon I know what might be wrong. You also need to change the schedules of when the phone polls for sites. You do it by day and stuff and do a start time. Once you visit each site once then that'll start the ticker so to speak. Mine autodownloaded at the set intervals after that.
Thanks Shuflie, u have a good point.. there is no point updating it via wifi. It needs to use a data connection. Thanks
DaBountyHunter: Thanks for the advice.. but i really think the problem is that i dont have a data plan with my telco.. i cant rely on WIFI since it disables whenever the phone goes into standby.
hi,
i'm a little bit confused about this feature!
i addet 4 sites to my list and if i got it right, there is a grey arrow if its updating and a green if its finished! is that correct?
but, when i surf on a site with a green arrow i can only see the main page, because if i tip any link on this it says error!
thats a total mess, the deep of min one link is essential...
do i something wrong or is this feature only a dream!??
I believe it only updates the pages on the main page. It doesnt save the entire site (i wished it did) cos it seems rather redundant when it only saves the main page.
hopefully someone can make a fix that it also loads the linked pages but i think it takes up too much memory/battery life and for example on news sites you only need the headlines, and if you want to read the article you'll have to wait a bit.
(for the Dutch, use tweakers.net/nieuws on your phone, it loads the articles instead of headlines)
well then in my opinion this feature is senseless!
quite true.. senseless.. might as well just use RSS feeds.
I still haven't received my TD2 (seems like it takes time for other languages as I'm looking for a french one which should be shipped on the 8th of May) but I still have a question regarding push internet feature.
What happens when roaming? Is there a way to disable it while on another network? Like a "disable while roaming" feature? Knowing the fees for data roaming, I don't want to spend money every time I'm going in another country...
yes, there is a 'disable when roaming' feature.

i tried that, also tried many other things but i am almost defintely sure the 'add push page' is simply a bookmark button. the main conclusion for this is that i dont get any notification of the 'auto pull' and it still attempts to connect to HSDPA when opening one of these push pages
I stopped using it because it only updates the top page.
Where are the oush internet settings on rom official rom version 2.53?

Does IM suck on Android, or is it just me?

I'm leaning pretty strong towards the former, but let me just say I am a *BIG* fan of Android. I bought the ADP1, and gave that to my wife when I switched to T-Mo & bought the MT3G. Both are great devices, and I run cm on them. Overall I have a great experience with these phones & they're super fun & convenient.
But on both devices, both when I had the ADP1 on AT&T and with the MT3G with T-Mo, (where I live I have to roam off of AT&T, so it's using the same towers as before.) all IM apps stink because they cannot stay connected. This is including the built-in gtalk & sms-based IM apps and every other free one on the market that I've tried. IM+, Meebo, eBuddy, Aimer, Hi Aim/Yahoo, imov, Palringo, all fail to keep a session open. I'm almost certain it's something with Android, because it's the same on mobile networks as with wifi, and I've used BlackBerrys on the very same networks & locations and not had this problem. At all.
So what gives? I'm not gonna pay for a chat app, even if that would solve the problem. These apps are free on BlackBerry, and I have a spare BB that I can swap my sim card into if I have to & just use the MT3G as a MID where I have wifi available. I'd love to jump in and try to write a chat app for Android that fixes this problem, but I'm at best a n00b dev & don't know where to begin. If there's someone out there with some guidance on how to get started on that, or if the problem is specific to something with me/my devices, or can explain this so I can understand the problem if not solve it, or any other input at all I'd love to get your feedback.
Maybe it's you or something up with your service
Maybe it's you, something up with your service, or your particular phones. Where my parents live, nothing works but ATT. I've had two BB which I couldn't even receive a signal.
Then when I moved up to the Dash and then to the wing, I received one bar and I could get all of my services to work, even the IM services. When I moved to the G1, two bars.
Now, with the MyTouch, I get three bars and all of my apps which require the network work. IM, text, phone. The blackberry wouldn't even get a signal let alone IM.
So maybe it has something to do with the service and the phone.
wierd thing is, at the very same location & networks, both wap & wifi, i get a completely different result on the mt3g than i do on the bb. there has to be something wrong with the android network stack or how IM apps use it or something.
hopefully i'm not speaking too soon...
... but i may have fixed my problem. i was thinking about how Android puts applications to sleep if it's low on memory, so i changed my userinit.sh script to enable swap. been logged in all afternoon. we'll see how well this continues...
confirmed resolution
enabling swap fixed the problem. apparently Android system tells the chat apps to shut down to free up ram & they can no longer keep their sessions open.
thanks for the hint.
Thought about this a lot but didn't want to try.
Now I'll have to... Thanks
i used to use ebuddy on my htc magic.
and now i use the built in google voice/chat with my milestone.
both have been great for me...especially the latter. I dont even need to log on or anythnig. its just like recieving text messages
Now i have 256 megs of ram size. everything works just fine. more than that. minimal lag on switching apps and tabs(highest so far was 4 seconds)
Hello guiz. I am completely new with how to tweak the innards of my MyTouch.
What is this "swapping" you guys are talking about and how do you activate it?
Does it really help keep the AIM session connected despite being in the background?
I've always knew of the problem that causes AIM to constantly sign off when I try
using it, but never knew how to address the source issue.
Thanks for reply!

[Q] Problems: Battery, Service Unavailable, No Data Connection. Need Advice

Hello all,
Been a reader for a long time, but not much of a contributor. This community helped me put Cyanogen 4 on my original G1. But this is about my Nexus One which I've had since orders were announced on the live feed! Rooted it at 2.2.1 and then a couple months later updated to over the air 2.3.3 when it was available.
Here are my issues:
1. Battery.
Getting progressively worse. Previously used from 8am - 11pm and have 30% left. Now dead about 6pm. Also, battery warns me 15% left and then shuts down about a minute later. To test the dead at 15% issue, I would start charging it, power it on and it says 1%. So it seems like stats or usage data is incorrect.
What, if any, is the best way to refresh the battery? Should I just buy a new battery?
2. Service Unavailable Messages.
I get pretty bad service in my house and have always had service issues, but lately it's been terrible. Can be holding my phone surfing web and cell service goes out. Have to put phone down for service to come back. If it's out more than a few minutes, it won't come back at all. Meaning I go into settings, manually search for operators and select T-Mobile.
Maybe related, but I can only ever use T-Mobile (my service). Trying to register on AT&T gets "Unable to connect" or "SIM card not supported" (forget exact message). Shouldn't I still be able to use AT&T for roaming calls?
Although rare, sometimes I have to reboot my phone to get the service back.
3. Data Connection Issues
Lately. (Notice a trend?) My data service won't connect. Sometimes I'm coming from a wifi spot or coming out of a bad service error and my data never connects. No 3G, no G, no EDGE. I'll even have full bars on service but no data. Have to go into settings, check "Use only 2G Networks," then uncheck to get data back. Again, sometimes have to reboot phone.
With all that said, I was thinking about moving to a new ROM or wiping and starting over, with the hope that a new ROM would fix problems and give me root back, which would be nice.
Problems... And this seems silly, but I would like to keep my game progress in games like Angry Birds, Drag Racing, and Robo Defense. Tank Hero and PewPew2 would be nice, but not end of the world if I lose them.
I purchased Titanium Backup, but that requires root. Seems if I want to flash to get root I lose data, so in a Catch 22 here.
All other data, Google has got me covered for mail, contacts, Google Voice, etc.
Considering CyanogenMod 7, but guide isn't very helpful for my questions.
Step 1, unlock bootloader.
Shouldn't I already be unlocked from my previous root. How do I verify?
Step 2, install ClockWork or Amon Ra.
I apologize, but can't remember if I did this. Again, how to verify?
From here on I can finish things, just need a good tutorial on the games backup/restore process.
One last thing, it's been awhile since I did the root and longer since the G1 flash, but how are the terminal commands handled on Windows 7?
Ok, so I've got a long list of topics and problems here and understand if it might be a bit overwhelming. However, if anyone has answers to just a few things here, even that would be greatly appreciated.
I love my Nexus One and hate to see it in such bad shape. Plus, I really want to tinker with it and get it back to working order, but from my post you can see I'm not sure where to start.
Thank you,
Steve

[Q] SGH-T599N Network Mods?

I've had the SGH-T599N since October, and, coming from the Samsung Admire with all its roms and mods and support, I've found having this phone to be, well, not as great.
My 2 main gripes with using internet on this phone, are that some sites I go to just don't quite work right with however MetroPCS/T-Mobile has their network setup, which I'll sort of elaborate on, and as of late, the, for lack of better phrasing, the peaking and subsequent slowdown of my internet speeds.
I'll start with the latter, since it's easier to explain, and because I tend to ramble, I'll state the question again before explaining:
1. Is there any way I can mod this phone to bypass automatic network speed capping?
I have MetroPCS's unlimited 4G plan, which ran at satisfactory speeds always at hundreds of KB/s until recently, which I assume is due to my speeds being capped out of over-usage. Considering I use USB tethering daily, this is not shocking. The thing is, I could get around that with my Samsung Admire thanks to this mod: http://androidforums.com/admire-all-things-root/563714-mod-data-governor-remover.html and by extension, this mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888372
Considering that was a 2.3.4/Gingerbread OS phone, this is a 4.1.2 phone, and I've looked around both of these forum sites long enough to know not to do any phone modding without extensive research and to wait for the bugs to be sorted out by others, I dare not even get my hopes up about being able to do that with this phone unless there's a confirmed forum post saying I can. Before that, I also found ways around the limits of my 3G network area that's bogged down by the sheer number of users, as thanks to QPST, but falls under the same situation. I don't even want to try modifying the build.prop, much less those deeper settings on my own for risk of breaking/bricking the one and only phone I have and still need to have functioning fully for many more months. So far, I've only gotten around all this by turning my phone and maybe the mobile network on and off, because the slowdown lock takes a couple minutes of use to kick in.
2. Can I change the network settings of this phone in a productive/significant manner, via APN changing, QPST, ROMs, or other such mods?
I've done all of these before on my Admire without any permanent errors. I found that APN Manager Pro is too outdated for this OS, and have yet to try similar APN programs for risk of permanent network damage. I cannot currently recall any significant mention of using QPST on this phone, or even this OS, so I've not tried that. The only ROMs I know of are Unjustified Dev's, both of which break the video camera functionality, which I have to have working. The only thing I've even done to this phone is root it and put ClockWorkMod from this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2421743. I haven't even bothered with the odexed files, bloatware, and such yet because I mostly use this phone as just a camcorder, an internet modem, and of course, a phone.
I wonder about this because it may indirectly solve the first problem, but there's different issues as well...I'll just explain:
Now, I notice that some sites I try to use with this phone simply fail to work as properly as they would if I were using a Wi-Fi network, something that also happened with my Admire. Unfortunately I don't have many examples that I can share for one reason or another other than these following two, which luckily involve big name websites. However, they may or may not prove useless in the end, so I'll put them in spoiler tags to be easily skipped over to go on to the more important part.
When I tried to access Tumblr with my old phone's network, whether I'm on my phone or USB tethering to my laptop, it always refused to let me log in, meaning I had to go to a Wi-Fi network and log in from there first, and then, if I wanted to "ask a question" aka submit a message to any of the blogs/pages I'm following/subscribed to, they would always say that that function is not available "at this time", which basically means forever since it seems to involve some error on Metro's side that'll never be fixed. I know it's not some kind of script error on the browser end, because if I stop the page from loading at the right moment, the text input field would actually display and maybe even work, rather than be dummied out by some eternal error message that doesn't even come up if I were using any other network.
Also, on my current phone, when I try to upload a video to Youtube on an associate's account while tethering to my laptop, it refuses to upload, much less even recognizing that I'm trying to upload, as it stays at 0 percent. This is also circumvented by just using a different internet connection. This does not ever happen when I'm using my own account, however, and I've managed to circumvent by changing the browser's user agent or switching browser completely.
Now, I said that the above two examples may not even be relevant, because these may be issues only I can reproduce. For some sites, I manage to get around the issues with different web browsers and/or user agent or proxy settings, but I sometimes get Gateway Timeout messages and other such unavoidable errors on sites that imply server side problems, but don't come up when I use other internet connections. Because the issues vary from site to site, I'm only asking for a verified method I can test directly on the phone, on my own, to get around these problems.
That's should explain enough of, if not all of the issues I'm having network-wise. It might seem like rambling, but it's better for me to explain it all now than for someone that actually has the answer to come by only to be missing one crucial bit of info. In case it is just rambling, to reiterate:
I have the 4.1.2 OS phone SGH-T599N, the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit from MetroPCS, which has been rooted along with CWM, but no other modifications. I'm trying to modify the network settings, and need a confirmed method, not a guess, on how to go about it.
Have you tried using a different browser? Opera will usually do things that chrome/stock can't. There are also YouTube uploader apps out there.
I think that if there was a magic hack to circumvent metro throttling out there it would at least have a sticky.

Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Stock, no matter what browser I use, it fails to load. It's a network problem, not a browser problem. I also don't quite see any such app allowing me to schedule video posting, when even the Youtube app doesn't have this account specific function. What I do see is bunch of Youtube player apps and downloader apps, but no uploaders. Even if there was one with the option, I'd still have to go back to my laptop for it anyway, because there's a lot of information and tags I have to add to the videos, most of which is automatically loaded from Youtube's settings when using a comp, none of which shows up on a mobile.
As for the hack, considering the one I linked worked for me, but not for others, a mod that works only for certain networks isn't really the kind of thing that should be stickied. If this thread turns into a discussion on that, I'll never get a legitimate answer.
Suppose I need to bump this thread, since it got moved, and is over taken by the other threads.
