Is there anyway to assign certain ringtones to contacts and have em ring that way?? but can i also do it where it rings that persons ringtone when i recieve a text??
yes you can set custom ringtones but as far as I know there is no way to do it for texts as when you get a text it just sends a general notification to the notification bar.
you can set up custom ring tones for texts if you are using a 3rd party application for texting like Handcent.

Handcent has a widget as well, with read/unread count.
Just sayin'.
use ringo lite
Well, you can sorta use the widget with 3rd party messengers. I used to use it with Chomp. When you click on the message, it'll ask if you want to use the 3rd party app, or the stock one. Just set the default to the 3rd party and you're good.

go into chomp's settings and turn off notifications.
then go into default android sms and turn off notifications.
go back into chomp and turn on notifications.
this should make it so your g1 only notifies via chomp. however, if you still get multiple alerts for a new sms, one of the envelopes will have a greenish border...this is the notification for chompsms. it looks almost exactly like the default icon, but it has the green color around the envelope thingy.
WOOO
Great! Simple! Easy! Awesome App Finally A Way To Text Without Sliding The Qwerty Out...great Work

I left dgalert installed and turned of notification in chompsms, made sure when asked which to use as a default, set chomp as default. Now i get the benefits of chompsms with one notification, just dont get the green envelope.
I kinda wish it wasn't a direct bite of the iPhone Texting module and it was made custom to the G1...its still cool though.
I kinda wish it supported MMS. Except for the better rates on international texting via Chomp, it's fairly useless to me.
what do i need to set a specific SMS ringtone for different contacts?

I dont know of anything but third party apps you can google for. Might even be some freeware for it...
I did find this but it was for Kasier
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473711
I was lookin for the same thing too and I was referred to photo contacts pro. I've been using it ever since and it allows you to set different sms tones for different people including a lot of other things
I get a double notification sound every time i get a text message. The first sound is the one i chose in handcent. The second sound occures 1 second after the first, and its the default notification sound("look at me").
Ive tried unchecking everything in the default messaging app. Ive tried going into settings>sound& display> notification ringtone> silent. Restarting phone after setting these things. And still no fix. I still get the double notification sounds. The 1st i want. The second default sound doesnt go away.
Before I made this thread i did research around the web about this and tried every suggestion. I still have the problem.
Any other suggestions?
also: my phone is not rooted
Wow. Never heard of that... I really don't know what to say.
Root.
Go to messaging app, settings, then just UNCHECK notifications. That should be it. I've had tons of Android phones and use all kinds of 3rd party SMS app, and have no issues.
Make sure you don't have some other SMS app or message notification app also running giving notifications. (missed call, sms popup, chompsms, trackball alert, sms count widget, etc..)

Yeah "nothing" is checked in the default messaging app.
I tried to install chomp to see if it was handcent and it did it with chomp too.
Edit: I found the issue!
Thanks for suggesting about looking for any app that had anything to do with messaging or ringer tones. It was a rarely used app i have called "ringo pro"
I changed the appropriate settings and now everything is fine.
Thank you
ok I am having the worst luck with TINY problems on this D4. so I was having a problem where blurcontactsync was causing my contacts to crash if I tried to use them, I found a simple fix to rename the apk to .bak, and it worked
Now I noticed that when I get a text message I do not receive any kind of notification. No smiling message in the notification bar, no notification tone, no vibrate. I have gone into text message settings and set the tone, I have gone into general settings and set the tone. I even went into titainium backup and froze "Messaging, and Universal Inbox" because I thought they might be interfering just like the blur contacts sync. no luck Still do not receive any kind of indication not even the LED flashing.
all my other notifications work fine, if I get an email, or a missed call I get a notification tone and a flashing green light....I extensively searched XDA and people were having this problem with the droid X but it was some kind of update bug and was fixed with a new patch....anyone have any ideas what I could do to get my notifications working again??
Hmm I can't replicate this problem on mine but do you use the stock text messaging app? Try a third party texting app like Handcent and then send a test to yourself from text.vzw.com and see if you get the notification.

yea I'm currently using the stock app I was hoping to avoid a 3rd party app but I guess Im going to dive into that. I can just freeze my stock msg app right?

I wouldn't freeze the stock messaging app, I believe that's still necessary even with a 3rd party app (speaking of, I highly recommend GoSMS, but have also been happy with Handcent in the past).
I remember seeing over on DroidForums.net that someone froze their stock messaging app and wasn't receiving any texts after that. Give it a shot but if you don't get any texts for a while I'd unfreeze
I am coming from the Note 3 and love the feature to assign a specific notification tone to someone in my address book. I checked my wife's LG G2 and it has the same feature, but my I am unable to find that in my M8. Is it possible to do this or do I need another application?

Open people edit Contact and it should be there

I use a 3rd party messaging app for individual sms notifications. Currently it's Chomp SMS.
You can apply a ringtone, but not a notification tone. U can use GoSMS, etc., to apply individual ringtones.

Not without a 3rd party app unfortunately.......I wish it did like the Samsung phones. I had the Galaxy S3 for a long time and I miss that feature
