Dirt cheap source of mini USB cables for Hero! - Hero CDMA Accessories

If anyone's looking for an extra cable or two, you can get them for $2.70/ea with free shipping from DealExtreme.com. I just got two in the mail today, and can confirm that they definitely have the same funky straight-side + sloped-side shape as HTC's own cables & fit the phone securely & snugly.
I can't really judge the wire quality (I'm not about to cut one open to examine it), but I'd say they appear to be about equal (or slightly higher) in quality than the cable that was bundled with the phone (same diameter cord, except the DX cord had strain relief & HTC's didn't).

Yeah I've gone through a couple "stock" cables already.. The mini side has starts to come apart so I just swap out with my dad & brother when I see them.

Nooooooooooo! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT ever use dealxtreme! I ordered from them once, quite a bit of problems.1: It took 3 1/2 (Not kidding) months for it to arrive. 2: When the item did arrive, it was a cheap Chinese copy of the actual product, and didnt work. Guys, do yourselves a favour and order it from somewhere else. I wouldn't be suprised if thus guy is the owner of dealxtreme promoting his site.

Same here, same cable that came with ps3, digital cameras and mini camcorders, and prolly a crap load if other things!
I have a ton of these lying around!

Lol I broke the cable to my Mogul I went to sprint store, and told them my update to 6.1 wasn't working (the truth) they said it could be the cable and handed me 2 factory packaged cables! For free.

The problem with the regular cables is that they fall out unless the phone is on an absolutely stable surface. Half the reason I went on my quest to find the right cables was a road trip last month when I tried to use the cable from my old PPC-6700 with the phone laying on the back seat of the car next to me. Every time the car went over a bump, the cable briefly disconnected and I had to re-tether.
Anyway, I'm just pointing out a decent source of something that's just about impossible to buy for a reasonable price at a local retail store in the US (at least, stores like Best Buy, Radio Shack, and CompUSA).

Monoprice.com
ftw!!!:d

Unless you're using the additional Audio I/O connections at the bottom of the connector, there's no real benefit to using an HTC type USB cable over a regular mini-USB cable. I use both without issue.

Additonals are .98 cents each ... High quality cables, amazing prices, good customer service, what else can you ask for?

For those that care (probably already know) but these are called extUSB cables. Not HTC USB cables (although they are only for, and created by, HTC)

I tried to use one of the cords I have laying around the house (since the cord that came with my Hero pulled apart where the cord goes into the Mini-ExtUSB tip) and it caused my phone to over heat and I tried another one and it worked fine so watch out and make sure that the cord you get is going to be the correct one

Just ordered one from dealxtreme. I'll let you guys know how it is once it comes in.
I've ordered from them before, I get little parts and wires that can't really go too wrong.

wait, so the cable is just a mini usb? we don't need to have one with the funky lil notch on it?

I received it today
It comes with no extra charger, so you have to use your old one. It has 2 usb ports, 1 vga, 1 s-video and 1 composite port. Oddly enough it has 2 mini-usb ports. One for syncing and one for charging. I thought that it would be enough with the sync port as it charges as well.
It can be abit fiddly to get the Athena in place, but otherwise it works like a charm. Now I need to figure out how to change the keyboard layout (swedish) and follow up on the mouse pointer issue. After that is sorted out I have a simplistic PC for visually impare (the text is hughe on a 17" screen).

I bought it from Dustin for SEK 1024 so I don't think it is a rip-off. They do not have a history of over charging. I suspect a device of this price class have expensive acessories. I am a bit disappointed that it doesnt come with a charger.

One seller used to have the have them on ebay at about the same time that expansys used to have them (although I think that they didn't have the second USB port). However, it looked to me like they were withdrawn because suddenly neither expansys nor this ebay seller had any in stock at the same time. Shouldn't be long before they appear on ebay. I seem to recall they were asking about £30 for it but I could be wrong.

can someone find one a bit cheaper? I'd like it for playing around testing external hard discs and accessories with but 70 quid is ridiculous for internet prices. Must be very few of them or something.......wonder who supplies Expansys as you don't seem to see their items on Ebay.
might require 2 chargers for extra battery
The docking station has two mini-usb ports. One for sync and one for charge. When I attach the charger to the charging port, nothing happens. My conclusion is, that the extra charging port is for the extra battery. This would mean that if you want to charge both the Advantage and an extra battery, you would have to attach an extra charger to it. If this is the case, it is even more odd that the docking station didn't come with a charger.
The only explanation I could find, would be that the mini-usb has a limited power capability and wouldn't be enough to charge both unit and battery.
//Johan
Joohan
Try to insert only the battery in its slot and switch between the 2 mini USB ports then see what happens.
USB doesnt have enough amps to charge the Ameo as it is, if you look at the mains adapter its a 1 amp output, usb from pc im sure is only half of that at 500 milli amp. the second mini usb may be to attach a second mini usb to get the full charge, I have an external 2.5 HD and it comes with a usb to two mini usb to boost the current. even then it still strugles, without the external mains adapter, which is 1.4 amps.
I could be wrong, just my oppinion, But I notice this when im in the car using usb charger, it keeps everything runnning, "tomtom" but wont really charge it.

This has been discussed before - it depends on the car charger you are using. The one that came with my Brodit holder happily charges the Ameo while using satnav and screen brightness on full.

Charging TILT with motorola chargers

I know some of you are EE experts out there. I had two TILTs. I enjoy charging my first TILT with Motorola 5V 0.5A charger because I can also use that charger for my bluetooth headset as well as blackberrys; very convenient. I just got my second TILT and it won't recognize or charged by the motorola 0.5A charger. It can only be charged by the htc supplied 5V 1A charger or USB cable link to computer.
I am just wondering how come one TILT can be charged with a Motorola charger while another cannot.
The Motorola charger USB male plugin is a little thicker (fatter??) than the TILT factory charger. All you need to do is to squeeze the male plugin a little bit with a plier so it will contact the charging blade.
i wouldnt suggest it as they charge differently and possible long term damage to phone/battery

USB is USB. Amperage may be lower so it might take longer but you're not going to damage anything. The Moto charger has the same amperage as the USB ports on your PC.

If you are doing something like GPS, I probably wouldnt recommend a moto charger while doing that...
At times, I notice the power drain (in general) is more then the charger can handle, even without using GPS...

I really hope you don't spend $50 on HDMI cables. That is such a huge rip off. Check out monoprice.com for cables. There have been countless tests showing that the really pricey HDMI cables don't matter unless they are like 50ft long and trying to transfer 1440p video content. (There is almost nothing out there that will play or display 1440p video content except for the videophiles) I personally have a 1080p TV and display it with some cables purchased at monoprice for like $6 and compared them to ones bought for $20 and there is no visual difference.
EDIT
Oh and $25 for the HTC charger is ridiculous. Just open it up and you will see that the components are very similar if not the same as the Motorola chargers or others that charge using USB. Just make sure the output voltage is 5.0V. I have seen some Motorola chargers output 5.9V using the mini USB port. They components inside them are pretty simple and can do the job pretty efficiently.
That was the point I was making although I attempted to stay subtle. Best Buy, etc. sell TV's at a very low margin to compete but once you're in the store they try to sell you cables at ridiculous prices (Staples used to do this with USB cables if you bought a printer from them, probably still do).
Likewise at an AT&T store where they don't make much money selling subsidized cell phones they can get some nice margin selling "HTC" chargers for ridiculous prices. Apparently some people still believe they need them.

Yeah I've seen Best Buy trick many older people into buying $100 HDMI cables. I have been able to stop a few from buying them but some still buy them. They wasted a lot of their hard earned money. I have also seen the list from a Best Buy employee that left it out showing how much things cost for the store and how much they are sold. A lot of their cables are bought at $1 and sold to the consumer for about $15. Some the store bought for $5 and sold for $50+. If customers saw this they would know to shop elsewhere for these things.

I wouldn't bother with Moto chargers - I used to find with my old Orbit that if the amperage was too low it wouldn't recognise that it was charging at all (and probably wasn't). I use a ~$5 1A car charger -> USB adapter and a standard USB cable. How cheap do you want?!?
Chris
I have been using the Motorola charger on my TILT with the Mugen 3000mAH battery with no problem. I also use the USB port on my HP laptop with no problem.

It has a 3.5mm out. So a male to male 3.5mm audio cable (very cheap on ebay) should let you hook it up to aux on stereo if it has a 3.5mm input.

I bought two of them yesterday; one for home and one for office. It suits HD2 very well. I can say, i am very satisfied. In the package you can find an extra charger unit and usb cable for sync but only downside is the length of both cables are short for me.I wish they would be longer... Smart Dock Alternative???

smart dock knockoff.....may be worth a shot because the samsung one is too dang expensive....this one also looks like it will accept cases unlike the stock one....i may have to give it a shot after payday http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMART-MULTI...ories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item5657f3c0a2
Since in US it will still going to cost more than $50, I will wait for some reviews before getting one. Good find for sure
the official dock does accept some cases.
I've had it working with the official flip cover, and with the official protective cover +.
I had seen this exact dock from a different seller on ebay a couple of days ago. I was about to buy it, but then I noticed that it said in the fine print that the mhl and otg connections can't be used at the same time. I'll see if I can find the link again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that the oem dock can do both simultaneously?

Edit: this is the one I saw

The note at the bottom says only one function (mhl or otg) at a time.

Very good in hdmi e 80 inch projector ... :good:
I got one from Amazon for 2t bucks. Compared it to a real one . It's got all most the same circuitry.
The chips that process the otg and charge curent signal are a lot different. But mine works it will charge while I runmy powered usb hub with my external harddrive. In the one I have you only get one otg option at a time. Like you can do one sd card or one usb thing or the hdmi out but not all at the same time so your going to need a usb hub thats got it's own power supply.
And like all Chinese knock offs you never know witch of there military owned slave labour operated plants actually built it . so there's a good chance you wind up with a better one.or one that isn't as good. Or maybe even one that doesn't work at all. They're all in the same case so its hit or miss.
My cheap knock off doc failed as off last night its no longer recognized as a doc. It shows up only the hdmi and charger.you can always charge and use hdmi out. But otg mod reverse the usb port so you can't charge.
Someone know a gadget that allows both usages? HDMI + USB at same time?

I'm thinking That to get otg charging theres got to be a switch in the software someplace that lets you turn offotg mod and turn in back on really fast. Like pules on off on off on off constantly in the kernel. But I'm also thinking that there might not be a switch like that in our phones.
I'm thinking that the chips in a smart doc probably do that. So that leaves us not much choice. We either got to buy a doc. Find that switch or
Get a wireless charger.
I found a port of the famous faux kernel. I tried it with the 5 dollar add on app. It had no effect on otg charging a note 2.
I'm thinking the best cheap solution is one of the inductive charger sets. Or possibly putting a 555 timing circuit into a usd cable.
But a $35 1 amp wireless universal charge plat and coil would probably be the easiest way to go.

USB Charging Cable For Nook HD/HD+

Just a FYI for all you Nook HD/HD+ users. I have had a nightmare trying to find an additional USB charger/AC adapter for my Nook HD+. Exactly what I came here to look for!
Did you order some? Keep us posted!
Yes, I did order when I found this eBay listing recently I'll report back when I get one. Think it was Buy It Now for £4.29 not long ago, the price went up slightly.
Excellent tip - thanks for posting
Mine arrived today, in the UK, after a two week wait.
Initially I was not impressed.
I tried it on 2 HD and 1 HD+ and the charge light stayed on green on all of them. No charging.
Then I plugged it into a Windows PC and nothing happened.
Not good!
But then I got to thinking. The charger I was using was an Anker 40w 5-port fast charger. So I dug out one of the original Nook chargers.
The cable sprang to life. Using the original charger it would charge all the Nooks that I could lay my hands on.
Next I plugged it into an Anker charger again, and it continued to charge correctly.
Next I plugged it into the PC again, and now I can see the Nook content properly.
So, I'm slightly confused as to why it needed to connect to a genuine Nook charger first. But since then it is behaving perfectly.
One slight downside to this one over the original, it is only about a yard long, which seems quite short after using the original cables which are at least one foot longer.
Otherwise this is a good replacement for the original, and I was starting to despair ever seeing a source of these again when B&N pulled the plug on their supply chain last month.
Many thanks for recommending it here!!! I'm going to order a couple more spare cables right now.
Update: I plugged this into a USB3.0 port on the PC, and after a few seconds it is actively charging a Nook HD. Something my old, genuine B&N, cables simply would not do. This looks like a winner.
Still Waiting For My Cable.....

Glad to hear you're pleased with it!
Since my post, the ebay seller had put it up to £6.55 (from £4.29, then £4.99, when I ordered), but they seem to have all sold out. Mine still hasn't appeared yet!! (I'm in the UK too).
Well, I've waited over a month, nothing has arrived, waiting on the seller emailing back as they don't seem to have any more. Disappointed but found this for £5.06 delivered (one left!!) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121501061004?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

^^That should say with £1.99 shipping on top. The ebay prices on each listing seem to change all the time!!
Still waiting on mine! Not impressed with the original seller from post#1 at all. The seller shopinsaving kept stalling, telling me to wait and wait (I bought this nearly 2 months ago now!!). Then asked if I would please close down the ebay Case I'd opened, then they'd post out a replacement (bit dodgy, surely?). I told them, as per ebay rules, I'd close the Case when I received a replacement.
Just as well I wasn't in any hurry!

I am having this very same problem with all three aftermarket cables I purchased but they do not even work with the original NOOK charger or allow me to connect to a PC.
What causes this, voltage drop across an inferior cable?

Voltage drop is negligible unless the cable is really, really long or the wires inside it too thin.
My guess would be that the connector is wrong and doesn't really fit.
Sorry for the delay replying. I have now got three of these cables and they have some, let's say, quirks.
First off the charging issue appears on my three to be caused by a failure to make good contact at one end of the connector.
I have discovered that these connectors come apart fairly easily. Even a slight creak whilst attempting to connect up with the socket can shift the connector back a fraction of a mill in the housing. This is enough to allow data connections but not power connections. So far 2 of my three have done this.
There appears to be a point where the connector gets forced backwards and comes to rest looking perfectly healthy, with full data links and no charging capability at all.
I suggest that you wiggle the connector so that it comes apart. Then you an take a look for yourself.
If you have a gentle touch and some needle-nose pliers (to get it out again later) you can try connecting the bare connector into the socket. It takes quite a lot of force to seat it properly.
I'm pretty sure that all my troubles are down to not seating the thing correctly.
btw. It seats more easily on my two Nook HD than on the two Nook HD+. Maybe due to the shape of the casing being different.
I am going to carefully stick my two split housings back together using Araldite. That'll stop them ever coming apart again.
If yours have started to creak at all during your attempts I suggest that you pull the connector out a bit and try again.
S'pose it's a while since I logged in here - I had Cyanogenmod on my phone but the Nook HD+ got so laggy it was unusable.
Ended up with a Linx 10 bought from the Staples sale before Xmas 2014 and much happier with it! I thought I'd hate a tablet with Windows, but apart from the crap App Store the full Windows capability is brilliant
