I'm in an area that supposedly has 3G coverage (Portland, Oregon). But...
My Tilt has never connected to the 3G network. I've gone to many areas thoughout the metro area, power cycled my phone (to see if it picked up new towers) but I never get 3G connectivity. The "3G" Icon has never displayed on my Tilt.
I've tried different radios which doesn't make a difference.
Suggestions anyone?
Wow, a local!
I have HSDPA almost everywhere in Portland (fastest 3G standard). Even with it not enabled, I have 3G in most of the metro area, including Vancouver where I live.
What icon is displayed?
I'm actually in Hillsboro, but it may as well be Portland.
Usually the "E" icon, and rarely I get the "H" icon.
I'm not sure what the "H" represents. I think its HSDPA, but I assume thats not 3G or as fast as 3G... and if it is then what's the "3G" icon all about?
HSDPA is what you want to see! It's the fastest version of 3G, and the newest available.
E is Edge, its 2G, not as fast but not horrible... Until Edge Evo comes out.
The data coverage maps from ATT are usually pretty bad. It doesnt have to say 3G for it to be 3G. HSDPA is 3G (the best) as well as other variants.
Do you notice a hit in your download speeds?
hmmmm... how confusing. If HSPDA is 3G. What's the point of the "3G" icon?
At my apartment I only get 1 maybe 2 bars of service if I am lucky so that means that while I am home "E" is the best I can get (or expect). But...
When I am out and about I get the "H" icon occasionally. Is there a good way to test my connection speed?
Yeah it's sort of weird... Here's a breakdown.

I don't particularly like Wikipedia, but this should help. I'm sure there is a program that will test your connection speed, but you can try something simple like connecting and downloading a cab, lets say Google Maps. Then you can run Google Maps and see how fast you get your satellite image up. There is probably a better way but that should show any big differences.
EDIT: I should add that 3G usually denotes a mix or standards available. It's just a generalization, and the fastest will be chosen by your phone (this is how I understand it)
Also, what ROM and radio are you using?
well in the midwest AT&T was having problems with 3G they dont know why but all of a sudden their networks just failed idk if that is what is causing ur problem but i kept on getting an error saying that the phone couldnt connect to wap.cingular.
Thanks for that breakdown. Gives me a much better perspective.
I've tried a couple of the more popular ROMs. But recently I've been using Q-Mobile 1.2 - It's treated me well. I'm still trying to understand why Dutty's roms are so popular. I can't figure out what makes people flock to his ROM's over the others.
I've also tried out some different radio's. None of them seem to make any improvement (while at my apartment) but currently I am using 1.27.15.32 because I am under the impression that it is the newest radio and therefore should somehow be better.
I'm also unsure if I have the correct data connection settings setup after flashing a ROM. From what I am able to find the only thing I need to do is use "wap.cingular" Then I go into advanced settings and input the OpenDNS servers in for the DNS. Do I need to add any other AT&T specific information after flashing. I've read that there is some sort of proxy information needed as well but its not very clear.
Anywho, what settings for data do you use? What Radio, ROM?

Yeah, I read about that. Aparently AT&T has no clue what happened. And to make matters worse there is more data outages today.
But I'm convinced that my issue is unrelated to all that since I've been experiencing these issues way before the data outages.
I'm glad that helped. I use the Stock HTC ROM 1.56.405.5 with Radio 1.27.12.11 (It's packaged with the radio). It's a legit HTC release, which means very little bugs and it's fast. Flash and hard-reset and you are good to go.
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_1.56.405.5_radio_sign_22.45.88. 07_1.27.12.11_Ship.exe

Anyways, I've heard good things about the Q-Mobile roms, but I've been so happy with the .11 radio that the HTC stock works great for me. The .11 radio is also packaged in the stock ATT ROM your device shipped with.
When you first boot, it will prompt you to setup data, and for me it gets all the settings automatially and takes about 5 seconds to do it. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you just use the wap.cingular, but in all honestly I've never had to do it. I also am not sure why people go crazy over Dutty ROMS. It's almost blastphemy to say that on this forum, and I really appreciate his hard work but they arnt for me either. I like real fast, not too flashy and super usable (and stable, of course, why I love HTC stock ROM's)
I just looked now, my access point name is isp.cingular. Never bothered with it before.
I'll check up on this thread tomorrow, hope this helps you out!
Please ignore this.
Interesting... You make a good argument about the stock HTC ROM. I'll have to try that and see if reception and data speeds are any better.
Although my Tilt came with radio 1.27.12.17 - I've only had it for a couple of weeks so they may have put a newer radio on it.
As far as ROM's go, I'm just looking for something that I can use as a baseline. I don't like programs cooked in. I'd rather have a clean ROM and install what I want. But, on the other hand I do like how the cooked roms often contain the latest updates baked right in.
I'm off to flash to the HTC Stock ROM. I'll let you know how that goes.
Thanks for your help, it's nice to have a local to bounce things off of
I don't care for everything cooked in either. The HTC Stock is pretty bare-bones. The only thing I would recommend adding is Nadavi's upadted camera, dumped from Polaris...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355587
And of course the Tilt Keyboard Fix...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334911
Also, Youtube and streaming video work out of the box, you don't have to do anything fancy to get GPS working (run GPStest, etc...) and besides that there is not much needed. Any eye candy can be easily added.
BUT, remember to hard-reset after flash! It makes a big difference, at least for me.
Let me know how it goes!

H is faster than standard UMTS, and yes, its HSDPA. You will only see the H while data is being actually sent/received though. When no data is being transferred you will see 3G.

It use to work before I had Shaps Rom on mine, now resco apps wont work and on occasion Windows Live Messenger wont work. . . Some other apps are Skype, zsIRC, Coreplayer(Yes I have the 1.1.3 one), some others but you get the idea. What could be the problem? I have the right MEdia Net and AT&T ISP settings.
Anyone? What could the problem be?
It would probably help if you posted your set up, i.e. rom/radio/os versions...
Ah, well, I said shaps rom. And I have the radio ver: 1.27.12.17. It could be the radio, but now I am only getting edge speeds, when I am in a city with all 3G and edge in the suburbs and ghetto areas?

oh? i thought schaps had more than one rom released.
with my current setup i haven't had any problems or complaints with edge or 3g.
so, how's your rom coming along?
Oh, lol thats what you meant. . . Its the 4.31 one. I dont know. I havent been able to use certian apps. . . and a moment ago it didnt have any connection and now it does and it jumps from edge to GSPA and then sometimes I cant have 3G back and when I do it messes everything up, like the carrier logo says AT&T 3G instead of regular AT&T and it would change the HSPDA symbol to 3G and sometimes its normal with the Hspda symbol? Why does it do that? Well I'm off to be its too late here anyways. ., it could be a network problem IDK but I hope it corrects it self in the morning.
What part of town are you in so maybe you could help me?
the band switching problem is my favorite. you are lucky to only get that now. try turning off your band setting from auto to either gsm or 3g, that worked for me. you could always change your radio and see if that helps.
oh, and your apps not working, ..... hard reset yet?
i'm generally all over town during the day, but i live near the uni.
although i don't know how much help i'd actually be.
Tried that and I don't want to start all over after 6 flashes(During the time I flashed to the shaps rom out of the time I've had it). Well, it works now. It could have been my area. UNLV? I am by the community college.

Normal operation of HSDPA is this: In a 3G area the 3G icon will show. While data is being transferred the H icon will show. Once the data transfer is complete it will go back to the 3G icon. I think part of what you are describing is normal oeration.
-Jay
Well, no. My whole town is almost 3G, so I dont think its that and it would say HSPDA all the time even with out data transfers. I think the network had a hiccup yesterday. It only did the 3G icon thing when I would have been messing with the band selection(hasent happened lately it only happened 2 weeks ago).

You should not be on H all the time, even when no data is being transferred. My phone got stuck like that once. A soft reset fixed it.
-Jay
Well not connected, all the time it just says [H], is there something wrong with that? I thought that was 3G? When ever the [3G] symbol comes on the carrier display area not the connectivity area says AT&T 3G and when its normal it just says AT&T.
I found sthg really weird in my unlocked ATT tilt today. I m curently using T-mobile. As many of you know that, you rarely get signal/reception in basement if you are using t-mobile. but today, when i went down to the basement, reception was gone w/ the E icon, then after a while, the E icon was changed to G, then the signal was detected and I could make phone call too. and the carrier on the screen is still T-mobile. Nothing changed except the E/G Icon. I then checked w/ my friend who is also using T-mobile(nokia phone), no reception at all. Does any one know what the difference between E and G icon on top of the screen is? will I be charged for some type of service fee or something if I make calls or use the Tmobile web w/ the [G] icon? please tell me if you guys know anything about it.
thanks in advance...
The "E" is picking up an edge reception, i get it in the UK sometimes because i have a crappy t-mobile signal in my house. When its displayed i cant make phonecalls/txts etc so might be picking up another carriers signal because i dont think t-mob uses edge here. The "G" is gprs just the basic slow phones signal.
G is when GPRS is available, E is when EDGE is available. No extra charge. This could have been easily answered by looking in the manual.......page 29
I guess this may be different for T-Mobile (and could possibly vary on the ROM you're using) but the E on my device is for EDGE service, and G is for 3G service. 3G, obviously, is the better of the two. But I'm on AT&T of course...

I don't think T-mobile has 3G here in NY.
Thanks for all the replies above
so, the signal of GPRS is stronger than the EDGE? if yes, then we are all able to get reception even if in basement. No need to get verizon anymore... lol
but why can't my friends' phones picked up any GPRS signal? is that because their phones don't support GPRS?

No no no, g is not 3g, G is GPRS, the slower version of EDGE, thats the reason why you can call in your basement now!
G is GPRS
E is EDGE
3G is UMTS
H is HPSDA
first is the slowest, last is the fastest, so if the fastest is not availible, it switches to a slower one, like happened in the TS situation
My icon used to pretty much always be on 3G, sometimes switching to E when I drove to my brothers house which is about 25 miles away. But recently I haven't been seeing 3G at all, but only H. I did see E a couple days ago, but I haven't seen 3G in more than a week now. I thought H was only supposed to show up when you were using a data network or something? At least that's what I read somewhere on here a while ago... Any explanations?
that H is wat you want to see
first H shows up when downloading data means you're using HSDPA, but is H shows up when u're not downloading data, you have HSUPA too
Ya, as XtreMe_G indicated this is easily answered by opening up the manual.

Yeah, I know HSDPA is what I want to see the most, but when the hell did AT&T have HSUPA? I live in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia Metro area... Anyone else from the area noticing this?
And as for the OP's question about E and G, there is no difference between signal strength and ability to make voice calls. E just means that the cell offers Enhanced G.
Whether you see a G or and E (or 3g or H) is dictated by the data connection offered by the cell - which has no baring on voice at all.
If you have any signal, you should be able to make voice calls - the speed of the data connection (ie for web/email etc) is the only thing indicated by the Letter - except that 3g/H can also do simultaneous voice and data where G (and E) can't.

That's what I thought, but then I tested my data connection speeds and when I'm supposedly on basic GPRS the speeds are much greater than anything either GPRS or EDGE could accomplish (unless EDGE was having a perfect day).
I did notice however that it only shows G instead of 3G when I force the phone NOT to use 3G while 3G is available in the area. If I allow it to use 3G service it shows up as "3G" and the speeds remain the same. As soon as I force it not to use "3G" it shows up as just "G" but the speeds stay the same.
"E" or EDGE always seems to be indicative of the correct speed. But for my device it switching between G & 3G are one in the same, and the speed doesn't change at all.
Could just be a glitch with the software on my phone, but that's how it is for me.

Thanks for that.
That will be the reason that when I used a tomtom one and got traffic via my bluetooth phone, a traffic update would kill any call I was making.
I assume I am correct in also expecting my TyTn II to ignore voice calls (or drop gprs data connection) if I am using the TyTn II for internet access for my laptop and a voice call comes in?
I sometimes get the E but as far as i know we dont have Edge in t mobile UK.
how do you remove the G?

My G Icon changes to E Icon
Hello,
I have a small problem...
First I will Switch ON my wizard. After Switch ON I will see a G Icon at top of the today screen ( That is correct ). When I press the power button, the screen goes off (i.e Goes to Sleep Mode ) and again I press it to wake up. but now the G icon will change to E icon.
I not understanding why this happens.........
Also when i connect to GPRS internet but it shows as I am connected to EDGE with E icon ( This happens on when I wakeup the device )
My probem is that why the icon should change when I wakeup the device.
To confirm you that, I have also disabled the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" setting in registry.
This problem will not occur in wm5 but only in wm6 or wm6.1.
In wm5 There is no E icon or it is not showing as "connected to EDGE" when I connect to GPRS internet.
Please any one help...............
Thanks in advance

Yes, I know there is no 1700mhz AWS on this phone.
Got an HK ver diamond last week. Immediately put my sim in and got an "H" icon. Being my first 3G phone I thought Edge was wacky. Later Icon changed to "E", so I thought Edge was finally working right (although surfing seemed fast at first).
Played with it for a few days, flashed to Duttys latest (had 1.37) and 1.00.25.05 radio.
Today while reading through these forums I realized that the "H" meant HSDPA. I can't possibly imaging how that could have been real 3G.
I bought this phone knowing I would not get 3G on it here.
I Know T-mobile is just going live, but I never should have seen that "H". Maybe because I was just a few miles from T-Mobile headquarters? Maybe they were testing something? A bug in the phone?
Any ideas?
everyone now and again i recieve the H icon, even though im not connected through HSPDA and infact it's only edge, i think its just a bug

Amazing but hoping it's real You may want to benchmark the speed and compare with reported: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409147&highlight=3g+speed. Let's know, ok?

I think that pretty much sums it up.
Should it happen again I'll do the speed test.
nah...i think it's just the phone trying to search for signal in every possible band, so it stopped on H for awhile on your phone then go back to EDGE...
Hi everyone,
my data plan covers 3G and also HSDPA......im currently using the JF1.51 and when i use the go online with the device, it only shows the 3G logo....... does cupcake only cover up to 3G instead of HSDPA?

thanks alot

The H in Hero is just a custom icon by HTC. All Dreams are capable of HSxPA regardless of whether that icon shows up or not. As for the carrier side, you are most likely on HSDPA. If you are on any T-Mobile network or most Asian networks (Taiwan, Japan, China) they are HSDPA. An easy way to verify is to start a speed test. Any speed higher than 384Kb/s downstream (384Kb/s ~= 48KByte/sec) means you are on HSDPA.
If all that was too complex, just assume you are on HSDPA.
Iconz
I had thesame issue with the Touch Pro on sprint, it only shows the EVDO icon when connecting, however, sprint is even advertising their new 4G network but I have not seen my phone ever go to 3G or above. I thought something was wrong with my phone...
I went to sprint to get it exchanged because I bought the phone for the faster service. I was given a big spill over the offered network on sprint.
Your answer: Basically, some icons are not unlocked in some roms or are not even included depending on your service provider. This being said, you will most likely have to have the custom rom to get this to show up on your phone.
But even if your phone does not show that icon, test it and see if it uses the technology.
- What I did is took my TP to my friend who has the new Iphone 3G and we started the YOUTUBE app and loaded the exact same video. Even though his showed the 3G icon all the time and mine only showed EVDO, my phone brought the video up almost 5 seconds before the Iphone ever did, not to mention the quality of video is so much better.
Ok, I see that I am rambling, I hope that this helps though, however, if I have been informed incorrectly, please someone correct me because I would like the other icons too, just for my aesthetic needs.

Your rom can't give you cdma support, that is hardware related. And the G1 is only on GSM networks not any CDMA's so you might have seen some other type of icon because it is not possible to get EVDO on any G1.

I aint saying I don't believe you, I just know it is impossible to get CDMA on a G1 no matter what rom or dump. What I would assume is it was HSxPA and the rom you used had a dump from the sprint hero. That could explain why you had a EV icon and is most likely what happened. Like the other guy said his touch pro had a EV icon although it was getting 3G, so since you do have a 3G icon and it switched to EV it is probably because the area you were in had HSxPA.
yea that makes sense but wow was it fast..thanx for the input
HSUPA gets like 7.2mbps so it is like cable almost, I'm not sure about HSDPA but its is pretty quick too.
how would i get this speed on my g1? im on tmobile with the android plan..

Go somewhere that has t-mobile 3g coverage. That is the only way to get the speed you inquired about. If it's not in your area yet, be patient. They are doing alot of expansions to their network. If you live in a rather remote area (ex: somewhere that doesn't have EDGE coverage) don't hold your breath. It's gonna be a while.

HSDPA and HSUPA are both 3G telephony protocols in the HSPA family. They are two parts of the same thing. HSDPA (Downlink) provides up to 14 Mbit/s. HSUPA (Uplink) provides up to 5.8 Mbit/s.
btw HSPA (or 3g as US carriers call it) is CDMA. Though different from CDMA2000(EV-DO) which is what you were refering to, UMTS is still CDMA based.
And to those confused about the Icons. 3g and HSPA are two names for the same thing. The icon you see simply depends on what the common name for the technology is in the locale the rom was originally designed for. Google based roms usually show 3g whereas HTC based roms sometimes hav H instead. The only difference is the icon.
as for those with EV icons. They are probably from the samsung galaxy system dump. Not to say it's not out there, but I haven't heard anything about a sprint version of the hero rom surfacing yet.
Ohh I guess I didn't have it right. But I know I have seen something about HSxPA gettin 7.2. Damn 14mbits is insane for a cell, I wish I got that in my area. My DSL is only like 7mbits dl and 1.something upload.
Should get it eventually. I only get 7.2 as well, but t-mobile has the whole 1700 band leased, so we might get lucky over the next few years.
