When a noob starts a thread instead of searching first, there seems to be 2 schools of thought.
The first thought goes like this: If people answer their question, it just encourages them not to learn to search and to keep posting redundant threads.
The second thought is that we were all noob's once and we should help each other out, since that's what these forums are for.
My thinking is that if we follow the second path, it helps us all in the end. For those of us that do take the time to search, we are often bombarded with these redundant threads. If all of the redundant threads had redundant answers, we would only have to read the first thread to get our answer. But if many of the redundant threads are full of flame, it just takes that much longer to complete our search.
My 2 cents...
Being a noob... it's good to know that there are members out there who can't point me in the right direction.
Good outlook im with you, but some people have no paitence, i personally am planning to join the army so both full mental and physical control are needed. I would much rather try to help people abide by the law intsead of just shooting them and saying WHY DID YOU DO THAT! If you think about thats what youre doing buts its the forum rules and youre shooting with insults instead of bullets.
What a bunch of ****. You guys are retarded. If you read the damn rules and follow them no one will attack you for following the rules. Damn.

I have to agree with JimmyMcGee and would say that most NOOBS have not read the rules..... There has been so many redundant threads started by NOOBS (You can see that there first post is a new thread). There was one member with 7 redundant threads started and only 12 posts!
I lurked around these boards for about a year before I started posting (aside from an occasional one here and there)...I learned a lot and had my phone fully upgraded with WM6, touch cubes, S2U2, the whole enchilada, before I really began asking questions and participating. I even taught myself via these boards how to edit my registry.
There is no excuse for redundant posts by new users other than pure laziness. It's easier to just ask the same question that has been asked a thousand times than to take some time, read, and learn. They want instant gratification with minimal effort on their own behalf.
They can search, they can read, and they can learn. I did it, so can they.

I'm with you on this one, when I got my Kaiser I lurked alot prior to even signing up, just because I felt like I really didn't need to create an account because most of my questions were already answered.
LOL io like that
flame is NOT! a real htc device o2 got it from another oem
you n00bs!
p.s. everybody who spend a long time in a forum will see people asking the same question over and over again
and i suppose that can be frustrating after having replyd 10times to the same question but
rather then flame not replying at all or telling the person to search for the question is pref'd
heck one could even write it once in a txt file and just paste it if writing it each time is too much of a bother

The problem I have with "the second path" is that you are giving the questioner your opinion on what the right answer is. At the very least you should give a link to a thread on the subject, because most of the questions don't have one right answer so they need to decide for themselves, by reading the original thread, how they want to proceed. This also applies to anyone who searches and finds this redundant thread later.
But I am in the "teach them to fish" camp. If you see some idiot trying to cross a busy highway, you don't start yelling "GO, GO, GO!" when you can say "Hey, there is a walkway overpass 200 ft up the road." Unless of course I have a video camera with me, then watch out YouTube, here I come.

See you are one of those impatient people who makes others not like you and/or the entire forum. Im not saying we should jus give out answers to any idiot thats asks, but i have seen a few cases where people have legitimate questions about something and some senior member comes in and beats him to death with his own words, not only making that person feel inferior but probably making them dislike the forums alltogether thinking their all assholes there. What im trying to say is that if its the guys first post and hes asking the redundant, at least throw some words his way to search for, dont just be like "ha ha your a dumbass thats already been answered" and leave him to probably post the same question again still looking for help. You could try to help him, then hit the triangle like the mod said and close the thread.
mikechannon said:
To be rude and insulting is never acceptable. However, and it's perhaps best with a little humour, you can point out that the question has been asked before and a search would have been productive. I would also then either answer the question and or give a link. Then you can report the post using the red triangle so it can be closed by the Mods.
Just keep in mind that although you and others may know the question has been posted before, a search is often only productive if you know what words to put in the search. So it is possible that folk are being honest when they say they have searched and found nothing if only because they did not know good words to search on.

Dude Seriously? Did you not see my "end Sarcasm" HTML Tag. I was making that Reply a Farce. I "flamed" someone asking whether it was ok to "flame." Get it? Geez people get a thicker skin and sense of humour. I try to be and helpfull as the asker's tone warrents. If the are genuenly asking for help I will. Just ask the numerous people I've helped via PMs. But if they are lying about Searching because they are lazy. Then I will give them a GOOD NATURED ribbing. I try not to attack them personally, but the silliness of being Redundant.

I see the forums as a little like a military organization. Newbies are the infantry, then Senior members are higher rank. Then you have ROM Chefs, then The HardSPL/Unlocker Crew. Then Mods, Admins, and the Founder. As you go up in rank you get a little more respect, as hopefully you have contributed in a good way to the Community. That is this forums main objective. The sharing of knowledge, not the hand holding and free technical support.

Thank you, thank you! You said it! I dont think the problem is it's the same question being posted, but the fact that the single posters come here for "free tech support" then you never see their name again. Just had someone, first post, ask about another damn i****e theme, and if it was possible to put on the i760, obviously n00b question. So, I answered and said it would be easy, he then replied in his own thread 6-7 times, where are you, where are you, what do I do, help!!! Shut up !!! Then PM's me and ask if I would design his theme.
For example:
Fred, he loves Ginger
Actually i didnt see the sarcasm tag but all that im saying is some people just dont want to help anyone they wanna get thier apps and go and im fine with that but some people sit around simply post against people left and right. You may try to help but some dont, so first sorry to sound so pissed but, I look at every person on here as rude or ignorant until proven otherwise, wich is probably why I post only when I feel I truly have input on the discussion.
Again dont take it the wrong way, Its not against you or anyone else, but like the OP said redundant post's + redundant answers = easy searching
Its more trying to help the whole community not just the one who you're giving the answer. Oh yea a couple shots at the poster is ok as long as its in good fun and you still try to help in some way.
Once again only an opinion.

I understand what you are saying, but let me share my newbie expeirence.
So I found this site and was excited about Flashing. I read up about it and Flashed a Dutty ROM. But My Hardware Keyboard Symbols were messed up on my Kaiser, common problem with an easy fix. I searched for "Tilt Keyboard issues" on Google. First Page was links to Two Post threads saying, This has been covered, go here. With a Link, if I followed the link it went to another thread with 5 or 6 posts, that had a link to another thread that had 10 post, with a link to another thread. Then finally that thread linked to the thread with Taurus Bulba's Tilt Keyboard Fix. That was my expierance.
That's why I would perfere people tp post in an existing thread. I raises the relavent thread to the Top Result on Google.
i don't think flaming is the route as it dishearts the newcomer, however i think if u r new than searching and reading first helps greatly and will help avoid posting redundant threads.
Frankly speaking I agreed that xda-developers indeed had help a lot of users out there with their apps and knowledge. Which I think many members out there including myself would really appreciate it.
I do agree that there is a search function. But have anyone, thought of that not everyone are as smart as the rest.
For that matter, there might be some members who might not know what keywords to type to get the search result that they desire. Therefore, when they search, most of the times they don't get any result.
There are still members like me who are a slow learner living in a certain part of the world still trying to struggle on what words to use or type to get the result. Especially when you come to such gadgets, there may be terms to use in order to get the desire results.
Not to mention that members here comes from all over the world. There may be a slight problem in the interpretation of English too.
Everyday is a learning experience for all of us. We all learn from each other be it which part of the world you are in.
But seeing those rude remarks flying over, calling other members idiot and etc... Some members even tell others off (Not in a joking manner)....
This had given me a very deep impression that this forum here are not friendly at all. Those words are hurtful (there’s always a better choice of words).
It does make a newbie and a slow learner like me feel very stress when ever I wanted to post a question. Thoughts of "Will I be set on fire instead of getting the help and guidance I need" run through my mind.
It take me more than 20 mins at times to type, read and correct over and over again before I hit the "submit button" so as to ensure not to offense anyone.
Therefore, most of the time I choose to suffer in silent or I just perform a hard reset. Unless big issue such as reverting to stock rom and spl for warranty issue. Thank god, cmonex was kind enough to give me some guidance to my issue.
I do agree that there are some lazy people going around. But with a little bit of tolerance and respect, and choose a better words to give a gentle reminder on how to use search, and not to create redundant posting, then pointing him/her to the right direction isn't it better? Rather than just slam on the poor fella.
Showing respect to each other may make the forum more friendly and gracious.
Don't you guys think so?
Senior Members, Mods - To Flame or Not To Flame?
Junior Members - Gonna get flamed or Ain't gonna get flamed?
Guess thats how the thought process goes when you see / start a thread
Hmmmm...what about just members i wonder???
I like it when someone replies to the answer by saying search 'here' and its the link, or a possible link to their answer. I think its pretty neat. Can anyone teach me how to do that or possibly give me the link. All jokes aside. My first noob question!*so embarrassed*
I like helping out in my capacity and feel that's what all must do. If you are gifted but have a bad attitude, keep it to yourself. Let someone else answer. For your sanity and health.
A friend of mine got a tilt about 2 months ago and the usb connection is broke(split). Is this a common failure? Will AT&T fix this?

A few things you should keep in mind before posting to XDA-Developers forums:
Check if your question has been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search function' in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there. You can also search inside a topic if it has too many comments by using the search function (CTRL+F) in your browser. If you don't find the answer, please post a comment to the relevant thread instead of starting a new one.

Yes but you didn't need to waste your time posting this question when you could have used search. Now there is yet another usb broken connector thread that didn't need to be there..
If your under warranty then they should take care of you. (as long as you didn't rip it out with a pair of plyers)
next time search.. It's the rules
As it turns out when I do a search for a topic the little search bar gives me EVERYTHING I dont need.. and NOTHING about what I do.. I understand that a lot of people just post new threads about the same crud but still, instead of just jumping down their throats take time to listen and tell them and, if you know, where to find the topic they are looking for .. perhaps with a link and a polite comment. Constantly saying "Did you use search?" is not helpful at all. AND answering their question with "This thread will be closed because another member already has a post like this" still doesn't answer the persons question. Imagine going to the airport and trying to find a flight, and when you ask a airport employee where the flight is they just say " someone already asked where that plane was and your question will be ignored thanks and next time use SEARCH" I am sure that would make you quite livid.. I am done ranting and I am sure the moderators will delete this before my head can turn away from the keyboard....
Sigh.... use this to search. I'm not even going to get into the rest...
Please post in the correct forum probably general i'm sure if you used the search you would have found a subject about search
*Sigh* Why do people find it so hard to use these forums properly?
as usual
lol of course someone would just want to tell me to use search. And the FAIL part is .. I DIDNT EVEN NEED ANYONES HELP just needed a few people to see this and agree with me.
just
close the thread already.. Im just frustrated with the lack of helpful community
and whats even funnier is that not ONE of you has asked me if I needed help. Just jumped on the bash train and ran my a** over

That's because this is a completely useless thread in a Development Forum. That's why we respond with disdain and contempt in our hearts.
actually its quite a helpful community but nobody is going to spoonfeed you. This thread should be closed it has little to no value, especially in the ROM thread.
LOL
My point to all this is, the people who use search are usually lost and instead of helping them you would rather just tell them what they already know. Which is why this thread was purposefully placed in the rom development section of XDA developers, so please, by all means, close this thread and be a human being for a change rather than a hate bot. All saying the same hateful and redundant thing....
This is a development community not a "Ooooo Get my phone unlocked for free" or a "make my phone neat and kewl" place. That is why the name is xda-developers. There is plenty of stuff already out there and the search button gives you plenty of info if all of the info at the wiki wasn't enough. It's just called looking a bit with the search button as in reading reading and more reading. Not doing so is just laziness. You don't just look at the first page of your search results. You go through them throughly.
....Where is Dave or kareem?

All well and good if this was the HTC funded 24 hour help line, but it is not, it is a developers forum.
Go to Execu-jet ( charter jet service ) and ask them when the next flight to Paris is . and they will tell you to go to the airport and ask the people whos job it is to help you .

again missing my point. Lost people need help right? and if SEARCH isn't giving the help then who the hell else can they turn to? You developers, hackers, and all around good folks... So stop being so darn cynical and hateful
I bid you good day sir...... I SAID GOOD DAY SIR....
While it's true this was not the proper forum for such a rant, I couldn't agree more with what the OP was saying. The resources on xda-dev are incredible and unparalleled but the attitude of many senior members and mods is arrogant and unhelpful. I try to use the search all the time, but when I find a thread that looks like it could contain the answer I seek, the f----ng thing is closed (without an answer) about a third of the time!
There's a simple solution to this BS, and most of us learned it in kindergarten. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Why waste your time with a "UTFS" (use the f----ng search) post when you could simply IGNORE it? If someone else WANTS to take the time to "spoon feed" the OP, WHAT'S THE HARM IN THAT? "Wasted space!" "Wasted bandwidth!" "Forum clutter!" - Well what do you think all those useless UTFS posts are?!
As for the heavy-handed mods closing threads at the drop of the hat, WHY WASTE YOUR TIME? If it's in the wrong forum (as this one is), MOVE IT. If you think it's redundant, post a link THEN close it - or just ignore it. Closed threads make no sense at all. If it's in violation of forum rules, DELETE it. Otherwise leave it alone and give it the CHANCE to be useful (at least to someone.)
I'll give a pefect example, right here in this particular forum. Try finding a good naked ROM for Kaiser. I mean truly naked - eOS FiRe is definitely NOT, but that's what gets recommended - just before such threads get closed by mods with the BS comment, "Plenty such ROMS out there. Thread closed." Really? Where? Good luck finding one via the search.
Your best search feature on this forum, is on the top bar.

Ohh mickey, now you have showed him the magic keywords how to search for a naked ROM for Kaiser.
You know that now you have disclosed our trade secrets.
Punative actions will be taken for breeching the non-disclosure act
A search is only as good as the keywords you feed it.
eg. instead of "naked ROM" you could also use "vanilla ROM", or "clean ROM".
This thread is even more ridicules than my comments to Mickey my post, so I'll close it..

This is actually a really good idea but...
If you want to get a thread stickied (sic) then you really need to have some usefull information in the top post and reserve some below. This way you can maintain it to bring the good stuff to the top as it is added.
A 100 post long thread with maybe 5 bits of usefull information dotted through it really isn't helpfull. Forum search feature or not.
Yea...I might have left a few empty post...
I just thought that a thread like this just for questions wouldn't need that...It's not like you're gonna have all the questions on the first page or smth... It things would have gone well... it could have A LOT of questions...
Great its a sticky so lets see if this works........
Oh for the spark's sake, I'll start.

Not the right criticism. It seems the point of this thread is not to be an encyclopedia of newbie answers (plenty of resources for that, especially mapledouglas' great web site), but rather a place where any newbie can ask a question that's been asked 100 times elsewhere, and find some generous soul to answer it. So newbie's shouldn't have to read through all the posts, just go to the end and ask the question that's nagging them!

I just got my g1 and I keep hearing about root. What is it and where can I get it?
Obvisouly I know. My point is, are we all sick of posts like this? Especially when the person doesn't search? Could a mod please make another forum for noobs so they can post these types of thread? Somewhere where they won't get flamed and somewhere where noob posts won't clutter the forums? Something like "xda-developers > dream > noob" or something to that effect?
I know this is the wrong place for this and that it is way out of topic, but the reason why I posted it here was because this is where these noob posts take place and surely regurlars will agree with me. Please do this for the greatewr good of the forums?
Thank you for your time and please respond if you agree.
Also maybe a spell check feature? (See last post haha)
do you really think that the 'noobs' would actually get help from the noob forum?.. think about that for a sec

Im not so sure thats the best approach.. Why is such a big deal that a so called noob ask questions, to ensure that he or she doesn't screw there phone up. And i agree if they would just do some research and read stickies, etc. then they would learn something. But if their noobs, then they are probably noobs to the site, and lets face it although this is by far the best forum available for android development its not the easiest to navigate for NOOBS. And if noobs posting noob questions pertaining to android development means that the forum & Community strengthen, then so be it. And Cbowely lets face it some of todays noobs will be tom elite developers, and they are who we depend on.....

If you want root, you will need a shovel, and have to dig and careful not to break the stems. lol, i could not resist.
"root is the user name or account that by default has access to all commands and files on a Linux or other Unix-like operating system. It is also referred to as the root account, root user and the superuser. "
Assuming you are coming from Windows OS environment, Root is like the Administrator account.
How can you get it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
I am noob. Most of my post are thanks for this. Awsome thing that made my phone run better. Or if I have a slight issue with somthing I may post a qestion. And I have had a thread locked befor...that thought was a good qestion but lokking back it wasnt ... but anyways.
I would like see a noob section. I basicaly leech off of this site and if I could help some noobs out I would be more than happy to so the real devs could get stuff done and work stuff out.
I am not saying that noobs asking questions is a bad thing, but I DO think there COULD be a better place for it than the developer section. I do believe the noobs would actually get help in the noob section because some people like helping noobs out. I know I would as well as a lot of other people I see in threads that help out noobs, I believe those type of people would enjoy helping the noobs.
Damn I can't believe that I am posting here because I don't want no Enemies, I have gotten tremendous help from this forum, not only with making my phone 100 times better but I also gained a boat load of knowledge in the process. I am not one that would start a thread unless I was at the last possible step I could be after long hours of reading and reading and seraching and through this process I have even been able to help out others....
but come on... someone posts a question cause they are having an issue that they need to get corrected with their equipment and wham they get roasted by useless reply's telling them to "use search" one after the another, after the another, after another when all someone has to do is provide the answer and tell them they could have found it had they searched... or they could have just given a link to the answer and the thread stops... like this thread I came here to see if I could help because the topic is "new g1 please help" this is about as useless as someone starting a thread on which color G1 should I use...
damn just wasted 15 minutes of my life to type this... remember people that everyone that started here had to post their first message, hence we were all "noobs" once when we started as well....
Again I don't want make ANY enemies I just want to make my phone the envy of everyone that sees it(like yesterday when I bought my daughter her G1 and I was typing on my on screen keyboard and they guy at the T-mobile store says hey you got your update, and said no I got my cupcake and man it sure tates good) and if I can provide a link to help steer someone in the right direction so be it...
end of my venting...
peace!
Exactly my point. I'm not *****ing about people making noob posts asking for help, but the fact is they get bombarded with "use the search button" or "this topic has been covered". I am not saying people SHOULDN'T post help threads, but there isn't a place for it.
My point: There SHOULD be a place for people to ask for help.. like a noob forum. Combing through mostly off topic threads, like the rom threads, can take a while and may not be helpful for noobs who do not understand what an spl or fastboot or dalvic cashe is. So with a noob forum, there would be a place to ask: "I succefully rooted, but the instructions say spl, and my english is not very good, so I am having trouble understaing".
This would help
1. Un-clutter the forums
2. From keeping large threads from going off topic
3. Noobs find they want easier by just asking
I mean I agree that asking a simple question that would take a sentence or less to answer would be easier than searching a crap load of threads for hours to find an answer. If I didn't know what an spl was, and I searched, a lot of threads come up, but not many that explain what an spl is. It could take DAYS to find the answer, when someone could just easily easily answer what an spl is.
Again I am not *****ing about noob posts!! Sometimes they need to be asked. It is impossible for a noob to get simple questions answered without spending hours researching.
I believe a noob forum would benefit us all.
Also the topics could be formated:
Help: phone looping
When problem is resolved:
[Solved] phone looping
