Someone please help me understand radio/baseband - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the difference of the radio and the baseband version? I'm on CM BG 1.1 and want to know what radio is best for battery life. Will any radio/baseband work with any ROM? Someone help please as I am udderly confused.

Sigh!!! first try to understand the difference between a Q&A topic & a dev topic...
this is not the section to post such questions... this has got nothing to do with devlopment... this should be in Q&A... mods please move...
To answer your question... in layman's terms... we can consider this the same thing... flashing the radio updates the baseband version... essentially any radio will work on any ROM available here... tough it optimal to have a radio flash on a ROM with the corresponding RIL library...

iPhone Power User to Android Noob: Few Questions...

Sorry I'm a little noobish when it comes to Androids (trying to come over from an iPhone).
I understand rooting. But... Can you tell me advantages/disadvantages of all these ROMS? Do some have the latest radio firwmare and some don't? I thought I read I could also modify these ROMs as well. I would appreciate some insight. Thanks

You can do anything. If you read the forums you will learn a lot more than any 1 person here could ever teach you in one post. Happy reading.
P.s. posts like this are frowned upon around where when you could have searched.
ROMs are just modified versions of the standard firmware the developers that make them bundle certain apps with them and make some slight changes. IIRC they are all rooted.
I think the radio firmware can be updated seperatly as i downloaded the HTC radio directly from the HTC website.
There is a thread here that tries to chart the differences between builds (the name "rom" is kind of a misnomer).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517506
Also, for community ("hacked"/"rooted") builds, they generally don't include the radio. You would update the radio and bootloader separately. The official builds tend to include radio and or bootloader updates.

This should help you out with any information on Firmwares, its alot better then a stupid chart.
Just do yourself a favor.. Do not Flash before you read the entire thread. Because you may find your new G1 is a brick.
If you want something or want to upgrade SPL or Recovery or Rom Make sure you competely read the thread you may find that other users that have previously flashed that particular item will give feedback.

that link also links to the same "stupid" chart. btw that chart is great for deciding which build suits your needs the best
I was sorta kindling.....
My thread has all the information and MORE. The chart is helpful but you can't get any helpful links with it. My thread has information/my thoughts/ and updates on how to find the newest firmware.

Radio Question

I have looked on the XDA-wiki, tried the forum and Google searches for an answer to my questions about radios and what they do with no luck, so I hope you can help....
I see there are a lot of different versions of radios that can be flashed. What kind of impact can be seen if I flash a ROM and I'm using my stock ROM, yet the ROM I'm flashing recommends another radio? What kind of impact will that have on the function of the ROM I'm flashing, if any? Could that be the cause for the delay in notifications, missed text messages, etc
Thank you in advance and if this is a redundant question please point me in the right direction.
Here is a link to the Radio thread, future posts should probably go here
Think of the radio as a driver for your phone's internal antenna. Newer radios improve signal quality and battery life. Read through posts at the thread I have linked to, so you can gain a better understanding of which radio is right for you.
You must HardSPL your phone before you install a new radio, or suffer the consequences. If you have flashed ROMs to your phone, then you most likely have done this already. Flashing a radio uses the exact same process.
I hope I helped, good luck and remember to read read read.

Radio Question

Guys, I know how to flash a radio. I know what a radio does. This was part of my other post and never answered
I see there are a lot of different versions of radios that can be flashed. What kind of impact can be seen if I flash a ROM and I'm using my stock ROM, yet the ROM I'm flashing recommends another radio?

Why post a new thread though ? Fine if you want to bump the other thread, but it just clutters up the forum to start a new thread on the same subject
Radio thread is sticked at the top of this forum if you're having trouble finding it...

Understanding of ROM and Radio [Help!]

hey guys,
i have a htc touch diamond and have never updated any of the phones software and was wondering what would be the best rom and radio updates to get on my phone and how do i go round trying to change it?
currently my phone has:
ROM version: 1.37.405.1 WWE
Rom date: 06/12/2008
if someone could please help me out understanding what i should do and how i can update it to the best versions i would really appreciate it.
thank you.
Read all the threads and don't ask which ROM is the best and stuff like that!! Each person's choice might be different from yours. Take some time to go through all the STICKY's . Thats how everyone learns.

erm first of all no need for the exclamation marks lol well i also asked how i go about updating a particular rom and radio which i have chosen as i did go through the rom STICKY's but couldn't understand how to do it... lol
no help then....?
woooow!
thats mean! look for threads with the radios... make your selection witch will coordinate to your service provider. first! you have to unlock your phone witch is like flashing your rom. its called SPL, I am currently flashing a touch to work with sprint. I am on the hunt

Now which configuration?

Hallo @ all nexus one users.
I buyed an nexus one before 10 minutes.
Now i wanted to know, what i should put on the phone ( radio/ rom/ kernel)...
I was an windows mobile user all the time and it is my first android device.
I want pure speed on it ( fastes kernel, overclocking etc.)
Also i need a good GPRS/ GPS connection.
Can you guys tell me please what i have to install on this device to get this?
Which rom2.2. or 2.3./ kernel/ radio.
I am a noob @ android but i will follow your tipps.
Best regards,
BikerBoy030
no help?
my ideas are now to use 5.12 Radio, because it is the newest and so it should / could be the best.
And to use the Wildmonk´s Kernel 2.6.35.10 because of the possibility to get the most Mhz out of the device.
is this a good choice?
but which rom should i use fot this?
Best regards, bikerboy030
Lack of answers in a busy forum should let you know that you either asked a very hard question, or a very wrong question. Since this obviously can't be a hard question, you're left with a wrong one.
Read the FAQ, question 1. Maybe it'll help you understand, why you're not seeing any answers.
As for roms, Froyo roms such as Enomother's TheOfficial NexusOne is the best to me after using so many froyo's roms. Its the most stable and fastest and have very good battery life.
As for gingerbread, CM7 nightlies are good if you want updates everyday. Otherwise Leogingerbread is good and stable. But currently i'm using SuperAOSP by [email protected] and find it the best gingerbread rom so far.

.....
I don't want to argue, but i asked not for an speciall rom, i ask for 2.2. or 2.3.
Because i dont know a different between these roms.
maybe my english was too bad.
the question for kernels etc was because i didn't knew, what i should install.
@ navlem: thanks i will try these roms and i will see, which i want to use
The answer is the same:
In every ROM thread in Development forum you'll see the descriptions of the ROM.
Try them all and see what you like.
